Stood strong on the PK with some real weak calls in the first, this is a big opportunity to turn this all on it's head.

@Alec Brownscombe @elandan JVR's just a kid, and he doesn't strike me as leadership material from what I've seen of the way he speaks, or even on-ice -- he's a damned good player, just not a guy who really sparks the others.  Lupul's the obvious choice given league tenure and how long he's worn the A, how he's faced adversity in his career, etc. But there's always som injury or somehing.

Kessel is the best player, but no one wants to put that kind of pressure on him.

Percy is the only guy on our D-corps who can slow down and control the play like that.  Gards and Reilly are great puck-movers, but not that way.

@loomx Kessel isn't exaclty old, neither is Phaneuf.  I don't really give a damn about their ages until they're either seriously declining or over 35.

You want to trade someone, you need to get something that's going to help you more - I'm guessing those trades don't pop up regularly.  You don't trade people for trumped up half-concieved notions about how the business works.

I don't know, they certainly had a bad night, and the two quick goals to start didn't help the confidence.  A couple better bounces and we get a goal in the first maybe it's a different game, but then all of a sudden it's three nothing.

It's the second game of the season; Im not ready to jump to conclusions or make any wild speculations or anything.

@Czarofleafnation My brain tells me that guys who played hockey their whole lives and managed to be amongst the best at every level they played at to the point where they make the NHL don't have uncompetetive bones in their bodies and aren't so incredibly fickle as to think that way, especially in the second game of the season.

And as much angst and desparation as some Leaf fans get into, I bet the players feel infinitely worse about getting their asses kicked.  They actually did lose, they were on the ice, they lived it.

Top line's great, we can count on improving contributions from the bottom two lines, and Kadri and Lupes will be as good as they were in the shortened season.  Phaneuf will have an offensive rebirth, Gardiner will be reliable, Reilly will blow our minds a dozen times and the new dmen will be steady.  We have real goaltenders.  Good times.

It isn't as though we look at the roster every Fall and think that this team is worse than it was last year.  We might argue about details or individual players or what have you, but the team does seem to be progressing.

@Hmmm Well, if you ask the player to do something and they do it wrong then it's not wrong to blame the player, but at the same time you have to put the player in a position to succeed.  If you don't have the proper cast to put every player in thier desired roles then they will have to do things which they aren't used to though, and so you have to hope that they can expand beyond their comfort level.

It was Dion who did things he shouldn't have, it was Carlyle who put him in the wrong role, and it was Nonis who didn't have the right cast, but Nonis and Carlyle have to make due with what they have and Phaneuf tried to do what was asked of him.  I don't see that anyone intentionally did anything wrong.

@Cameron19 @Lescott Yeah, I know, and I'm just saying that last year it looked at times like he was feeling sorry for himself or it might have been exhaustion or whatever.  How he would coast to pick up loose pucks and lose out on them, or how he didn't always support his d partner with possession, whatever.  Last game he seeme more driven, like he wanted to take the fight to them.  Maybe that is just having a defensive defenseman as a partner, but I hope to see more of that out of him.

@Cameron19 @Lescott Yeah Cam I know how some people are real Phaneuf supporters out here.  But he didn't have the drive all of last season which really can separate him as a player.  Too many minutes, wrong partner, tough competition, whatever.  He can be better than he has.

@MaxwellHowe he's got a great feel for playmaking, but doesn't always do the right thing at the net.  He needed to shoot that earlier when his angle was better or try to wait Gus out.

Thought that was a heady shift by Lupes when Gards coughed it up to the front of our net and he chopped it out to the boards and then recovered the puck as the only guy on the forecheck and really should have scored.

And Phaneuf looks like he will redeem what alot of us didn't like about his game last year.

He would be one of the top 3 or 4 best players in the league right now if he was still in his prime.

Mainly due to bad trade deals we've signed over the years which forced everyone into offering cheaper labour and governments to bend over backwards. Poor billion dollar companies need all the breaks they can get to keep those share prices high and the expenses where they belong: externalized.
