great read, I'm glad someone else picked up on the Moneyball similarities. Only time will tell if Dubas is as successful.

I can't help but compare the hiring of Dubas to the plot to Moneyball. We hired an advanced stat guy to find good players flying under the radar.

A lot of negativity on this site regarding Booth (most of it unfounded). It seems as if we're not trading for Crosby, Stamkos, or Tavares then it is a bad move?

@DARF24 100% agree with the lineup. I expect that this is the lineup the Leaf brass want to go into the season with

@lukethenuke I like the team more with Booth. He basically completes the 3rd line cycle I was arguing for last week. I feel we are now a playoff team.

are we happier with Booth on the 2nd line or the 3rd. Personally I like the idea of him playing beside Santorelli on the 3rd, and Frattin on the 2nd with Kadri. There is chemistry there.

My only question now is Komarov, he was signed to not be "another 4th liner" but he is basically at the bottom of the LW depth charts.

@TheCanucksnaphook @maximus_asinus simply meant  that the Leafs might have drafted him under the notion that he was going to be a project player, and then find out he isn't lazy just sick.

I then wonder if Johnson's asthma was common knowledge, or if Bergman went the extra mile and found out on his own. Or if we drafted him and we simply lucked out.

A lot of news on Andreas Johnson as of late. His asthma was treated (what does that even mean?) and now he is turning out to be quite a steal being picked in the 7th round. Do we have a scouting report on him? Was his asthma something that really held him back?

can someone make sense of the arbitration awarded to Sobotka? He apparently owes the Blues one more year of service at 2.725 mil if he chooses to return to the NHL. That is a pretty lowball deal if the rumors are to be believed. Have the Blues effectively closed the door on his return?

@MaxwellHowe do you think it is because Reimer's contract is an unknown? Maybe a deal is pending on his arbitration award.

@MaxwellHowe @Burtonboy that is bad asset management. Are we supposed to let a good piece go for nothing? Or do you take a small risk and turn his trade value into more than a conditional pick?

6 days, 23 hours ago on Peter Horachek on Sportsnet 590

Reply

@Burtonboy there is literally no risk in keeping him. If he gets a huge dollar amount awarded to him in arbitration you sign him to a year contract and deal him at the TD. If he wants out he will play better to attract suiters. He is a good 1B goalie so if Bernier goes down or turns out to be less than stellar the Leafs are still in good shape.

does anyone else think we're carrying a lot of spare parts into the season? A lot of square pegs for round holes. Holland for example is a more finesse player, he does not fit between Clarkson and Komarov who play a more physical dump and chisel, cycle type game. Our 4th line is looking like it will end up being a bunch of plugs. Do we have any defensive minded forwards besides Santorelli dressed at all?

I'd like to push Holland off the starting roster, What are the chances that we could swing a deal for Jordan Staal, switch Santorelli back to C and run with something like:

JVR - Staal / Bozak - Kessel

? - Kadri - Frattin

Komarov - Staal / Bozak - Clarkson

? - Santorelli - ?

Lupul, Holland, and whatever else go to make the deal work. The question marks are replaced by Marlie depth. If we could pick up Eric instead with a slightly sweetened package I'd accept that as well.

@Cameron19 @maximus_asinus Stoll plays on the PK, leads the team in hits among FWDs, has offensive upside, and brings an element of grit/leadership. But he is somehow softer than Holland.

@Cloud09 @maximus_asinus @Cameron19 @hometeem with cycling comes secondary offense. As I mentioned above, the Kings do this and they are yearly contenders. Why are we modeling ourselves differently?

@Cameron19 @hometeem @maximus_asinus why can we not roll 2 checking / energy lines? If we put together a bottom 6 that could cycle effectively, our 1st line's defensive deficiencies would be less apparent.

I don't see Holland as a fit in our bottom 6, he isn't overly physical, nor strong defensively. I'd like to see him flipped for a Sutter, or Stoll, or flipped as part of a package for a top 6 winger.

It was mentioned that Legwand was offered 4 mil for X term. He is 33 years old, do you expect he looks for a retirement length contract? 4 mil would be far too much if that is the case.
