My sense is that the Leafs might try hard to somehow swap picks with NYI #5--thereby enabling them to grab del colle or virtanen or ritchie---If they stay at 8 , both all of them  may well be gone.

Burke will likely grab Ritchie for eg and both Virtanen and del colle may also be gone...At that point, we might then have to trade dn a speck  and still grab McCann?

I think many of you here seriously underestimate Shanny's goals and plans

As I see it, Shanny is going to turn out to have major input in anything involving players--incl How they are coached

Next step in the next few days--Muller and possibly Oates brought in Shanny as 2 of the new AC's--Yes RC will have 'some input' but this is a face saving exercize---Shanny will mandate who all 3 AC's will be and at least 1 of them will be RC's Replacement in calandar 2015

Same goes with line makeups and playing types like Holland etc vs guys like Orr---You folks will likely see a change in RC's coaching decisions in time

I think Shanny had to move fast this week in part because Lavy was hired and the list of qualified coaches who fit with the Shanny style was dwindling---So Shanny bought time and may well have already talked to Muller and maybe Oates as well re the AC's entry into the organization

Shanny already knows which players need to stay and which need to go--and he doesn't need RC's input in that regard-nor Nonis's----Shanny was a star player for over 20 years--He knows what goes on in the Room intimately and why some of the players might have stopped listening to the 3AC's just fired

the problem is overall mindset of losing--firing RC and his coaches only is a silly idea-Lewickie  changed the Raprors and has also engenered a huge fan base now for soccer--He MUST now step in and clean house on the Leafs and that includes Nonis

This is an overall Toronto is a loser franchise' mindset---it is far far bigger than just the coaches or swapping star players--As much as I like Nonis, he has to go also ad w have to start over with the 'fix the mindset'  problem---Leiwicckie is not part of that mindset so he will likely bring in replacements for both Nonis and the coaches from winning mindset  type replacements

as i understand it--pitt and boston play the 2 wildcards and then 2 of Tor/Tampa/Mtl play the 2 best out of NYR/Philly and CBJ---so if Tor finishes 2nd in A, they will play the lower of the 2 non wild cards out of NYR/Philly/CBJ

so if CBJ finishes above the wild card but below NYR or Philly--then we would play CBJ in the 1st round--if cbj finishes above both nyr and philly then we play nyr or philly------making our last game in mtl  a crucial game--we either want to win that or lose, depending on where cbj is?

The 3 teans in the Metro Div all get into the playoffs--but Pitt is the only one flying and both TOR and MTL have more points than NYR and CAR

if everything stayed the same--would this mean that TOR and MTL would be the 4th and 5th seeds and they play each other?

was at the game vs nyi the other night-

biggest negative impression by far was  lack of  hitting/lack of will to compete

no one  took the body--just used their sticks like soft golfing hatchets trying to play the puck-as if they were afraid to get hurt---this is much more than they don't like or respect the coaches---the entire team just floated

in these type of situations, guys like dion clarkson etc need to lay the law down by 'follow our lead'---but the leaders are floating too just hacking their sticks

is there a pecking order as to who is next in line to claim--ie CGY wud know that few teams are ahead of them so why trade fpr him instead?   or is it a free for all, meaning Burke would risk missing him so trade for him and maybe colborne instead?

thought crosses my mind that after trade(s) nxt week, nonis may suddenly revisit this deal and both sides sign a replacement 2-4 yr term contract along the lines of cowen--wouldn't surprise if Franson side already anticipates it and realizes leafs have to trade etc players like liles and that this is just a stop gap to get into october onside

Watters also said that Franson is a top 4 D man who is better than Liles as well as being better than Phaneuf and than next year he could be looking at 4-6....said that Reilly will be sent dn and that he likes Ranger---and that Nonis has done a good job-particularly in 'saying no'---and that while Reimer can obviously stop the puck it is Bernier that is crucial because Bernier has terrific puck moving skills (to help in getting puck out of our own end).

"There is absolutely no interest in Liles by anyone' (worst trade that burke ever made)-he's of no use

"Colborne  can't skate at NHL level"

"Ashton can't finish--maybe a 4th liner

"McClement VERY underrated-most underrated on the team"

"Leafs have no interest in  renewing Phaneuf--has no leadership qualities--lupul should be captain

"Clarkson is NOT a tough fighter-should go back to the way he was in nj

"Kessell renewal $6max--no leadership skills

'leafs 'might' finish 3rd due to bernier's puck moving abilities--detroit and boston getting old-if not, leafs should likely get a wild card spot

@Cameron19 @ionsys

I value Franson highly and he's a highly needed rt handed shot to boot--I think the original plan in trading for Bernier was a short term thing and that the Leafs are already convinced that Reimer is too injury prone to run with for a long time. ie-I think Nonis etc are already wedded to annointing Bernier and had no intention when they signed Bernier that they were actually intending to keep Reimer into March/14

Drew McIntyre is showing that he can be a very good backup--so why keep both starters while Rome is in danger of burning so to speak--Either Liles goes or Kulemin goes or Reimer goes--of those 3, Reimer probably has the most marketability and likely wouldn't hurt our goal situation much---that's one reason why they still have McIntyre in camp for maybe 1 more game

11 months, 1 week ago on Leafs Notebook: Preseason Edition – September 23

Reply

I still think Reimer will very soon be traded to a Cap positive team who badly needs a good Goalie

I seriously doubt that Nonis is going to carry both into the March  trade deadline.

To move Liles at say 2.8 -net, Nonis going to have to add a player and/or pick as well---

And Nonis knows that eventually he's gonna have to move either B or Reimer in the next several months---and he now knows that Drew McIntyre would make a very good backup to either B or R.

Highly suspicious that Burkie was at the 2 buffalo games this past weekend (maybe only sun night maybe both).

then,

-Liles (swallow $1,000 salary)

+Franson 2yr $3,000 per

Bernier with Drew M backup---Reimer traded  earlier than many of us thought

Ending Cap Space +$1,905

My suspicion---Both Reimer and Liles will very soon be traded, possibly together maybe to CGY

Reimer's game in Buffalo was steller-turned heads--but Drew MC would be a steller backup for Bernier and we wud save $1,200 on the cap just there

Maybe Reimer +Liles to CGY for a 2nd ,3rd and a prospect? and we swallow $1,000 of Liles salary?---fill in the details etc etc

$1,996 cap space 13F  7D now

-McClaren +Devane = $1,995 Cap Space

+Raymond @$925 - Smith = $1,620 Cap Space

- Fraser +MacWilliam = $1,808 Cap Space

-Holzer +  Percy and +Brennan = $979 Cap Space to start Season

within 2 weeks later, trade Liles +Colborne and take back $775 of Liles Salary---for picks/prospect ticketed for Marlies---Cap Space then $979 +$3,100 +$600 = $4,675

+Franson 2yr at $2,900 per... hour before Liles /Colborne goes public...Cap Space $1,775

+Ashton $1,040 = $735 Cap Space remaining   13F-8D

in effect trick is to open season without Franson to entice other teams to deal instead of waiting for waivers to scoop up cheap---then nergotiate best trade idea for Liles few days after that

+Devane at $701 same as Frazrer McClaran

=13F and $1620 cap space

-Holzer

+ Bodie or Brennan

Liles waived  worst case and no one picks up and we gain only $950 on cap

=6D and $2,757 cap Space to sign Franson to go to 7D  (if Raymond rumour of $925 is accurate)

IF Franson won't do $2,757 for 2 yr-Cowen got $4.1 for 4yr)---somehow get Calgary  or the Ducks  to trade for Franson if we take $1.0 back in salary and even  add in a prospect maybe--or do the Minny deal proposed by Cameron

nonis simply trying trying to jump from liles to franson before putting liles on waivers to clear space--otherwise franson would ask for more

i suspect in the end nonis will do 3yr at 3.6per for franson and momentarily be over the cap--then turn around and waiver liles figuring that someone like carolina will pick him up at only 1.9 hit

then, depending on play, we demote holzer or trevor smith or even 1 of mcclaren or orr  and sign raymond at left wing $800,000

Cap Space

As I read Capgeek, the leafs should be fine--$6,171 space less 1,275 for Frazer=$5896

but that incl 9D so leaving Holzer with Marlies the capspace rises back to $6,683 to sign Kadri and Franson

Add back $550 for Trevor Smith a fwd who will go to Marlies as well as $600 for Colborne who will also stay with Marlies and the Cap Space rises to $7,833 before even considering a Liles trade/buyout---Leafs can prob sign Kadri and Franson below $7833 combined?
