If nothing else this guy provides depth to the lineup and he can be moved up and down it if need be. I definitely like it better than trading for a Josh Bailey.

@Cameron19 @Reether But as you say if he was a moron and Shanahan believed that, he would be gone and an interim head coach would be put in. It is common sense.

@conis @Burtonboy The point is that Dubas knowledge with advanced statistics is not the sole reason for his hiring. It's about his whole body of work and overall hockey knowledge. I can't believe I had to explain that lol

@Cameron19 @Reether I disagree, I think he made some questionable moves but I don't think he is a bad coach. Why would they keep a moron for a coach? Even if it was as an interim coach, this is the guy that is grooming the young players that are going to be filling the holes in the roster and guys like Gardiner, Kadri and Rielly. They obviously believe he can still have success with this roster or else they would have gotten rid of him and put someone else in that spot.

@peterbleafs @Reether As you said I think Loiselle was said to be the cap expert. So although Nonis must accept blame for it too, it was under Loiselle's supposed area of expertise and responsibility.

I don't get this thought process that Nonis and Carlyle have been kept on to tank this season and both will be automatically fired after or during this year. Why is it so hard to believe that Shanny thinks both could be part of the solution. These guys weren't two idiots that were hired by another idiot. They are smart hockey people. They have had success.

Changing up their assistants might just mean that Shanny thinks that they need some different voices and styles of opinions than they have previously had. Plus neither Nonis nor Carlyle picked their assistants here. Maybe that was part of the problem.

If Spott and Dubas are the heir apparent as some people think, why would they keep these supposedly terrible hockey people to groom them in the meantime? It just doesn't make sense.

Shanahan is taking his time to evaluate everyone which is the right approach. If he thought either of those guys were for sure not part of the future they would be gone.

@steele123 I would say a few years at least, if not more. Seems like the leafs are looking to develop not only players but management and coaches as well.

@TheCanucksnaphook @Reether @Mcost61 It might be as simple as Shanny thinking they could still be part of the solution. But i totally get why it looks weird.

@TheCanucksnaphook @Mcost61 In all fairness I think they just want to be in a position to consider everything instead of being closed minded about new things. Also getting a guy to groom for the future who seems to be well regarded doesn't hurt either.

I think it will be interesting to see what Gards gets in comparison. I wonder if they held off on signing him until this Franson deal was done so Franson couldn't use it as a comparison.

1 week ago on Weekend Mashup: $2.2 million apart

Reply

@TheCanucksnaphook @Reether Ya none of his negotiations here have ever gone smoothly, doesn't seem like the team ever had much faith in him, starting from Wilson who I believe scratched him a bunch at the beginning of his first year here

1 week ago on Weekend Mashup: $2.2 million apart

@TheCanucksnaphook Ya never a bad thing to avoid arbitration. If they do decide to keep him for the start of the year at least there won't be that bad blood.

@Burtonboy I'm really pumped about this signing. I see him as a guy that can go up and down the lineup depending on where we need him and still play well.

@Bruffins @Reether @LeafsGuru Ya as I said I would take the risk, I just understand their hesitation in doing it. Another thing they are probably waiting on is Franson's arbitration.

1 week, 4 days ago on Maple Leafs re-sign Peter Holland to 2-year, $1.55 million deal

Reply

@Burtonboy @Reether @ingy56 @peterbleafs Ya I would be surprised to see either in the lineup. I could possibly see 1 of them (probably McLaren) on the roster if none of the AHL big guys are ready. But as you said, the 4th line will be very different and I doubt their type get any sort of regular time in the lineup either way.

1 week, 4 days ago on Maple Leafs re-sign Peter Holland to 2-year, $1.55 million deal

Reply

@ingy56 @Reether @peterbleafs Exactly, he is willing to answer the bell. He also was surprisingly good on the fore check. Not the best fighter but it's better to have him do it than someone else.

1 week, 4 days ago on Maple Leafs re-sign Peter Holland to 2-year, $1.55 million deal

Reply

@Bruffins @LeafsGuru I think they will do the bridge style contract again. Might be risky if he doesn't develop the way they want him to and then you got Rielly's contract around the corner.

That being said I think it would be a risk worth taking because it could be a steal in a couple years.

@ingy56 @peterbleafs If Bodie comes out and plays like he did last year he should get a spot on the roster. Smith will probably be in the A.
