It's always midnight somewhere...
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @qrex @SeinfeldOKC See, I just don't agree. I think Lamb and Robes will be better fits with the team in the long run, and I was uncomfortable with giving Martin more than 2 years. I don't begrudge him his last long contract, but I think it was too big a risk for a team I believe will be heading into luxury tax territory soon.
I know you don't agree, but I see a lot of these decisions through the lens of when to enter the tax and risk triggering repeaters. From that perspective, we're very well set up for the future.
Anyway, I've gotta bounce, fun discussion.

@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 Yeah, I'm just saying we haven't had a 'clean' year (as if such a thing really exists) to see how the offense operates without Harden/Martin.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 I don't mind him there. I just don't put much stock in positionality. Imagine if we had Chalmers initiate from the top of the key into Russ off a pick. There's ways to get him on the ball without playing PG.
I just think we get to fixated on our SG issues and the fact that Harden is probably the best SG in the game for the next 5 years.
Edit: I picked Chalmers for the 3 shooting and affordability, not because I want that bastard on the team. Felt I needed that cleared up.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @qrex @SeinfeldOKC The reaction here was jubilation, but my reaction when I saw we were starting Butler was initially to turn off the TV. My fandom got the better of me. (Also, not playing Thabo and Perk together ought to be common sense, but Brooks)
To be clear, I don't think Butler should've played a minute in the playoffs and it would've been a shitty thing to do to Lamb, but dammit, I wanna win!
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 True, but there are a ton of middling PGs that we could get and slide Russ to the 2. My point is more that being a SG doesn't increase his value due to scarcity. It's about his overall rank, which is still top 10.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 Right. And would've loved to keep him. But Minny gave him more years and dollars than he was worth (at least to us).
In any case, it will be interesting to see how we do this season as the last two both have huge caveats (Martin in 12-13, Russ injury in 13-14).
@Jabb0310 @sammasaaron @mattchant It was always civil. I don't think Matt or I take anything personally.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 12-13, dude.
@Jabb0310 @mattchant @sammasaaron I don't think Lamb's a shooter. He's a cutter and catch-and-shoot off curls and I think we're not helping him by spotting him up.
@mattchant @Jabb0310 @sammasaaron I really think the SG scarcity is overplayed in a 'positionless' league.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 You remember that WB missed half the season right? I'm sure that impacted efficiency(and I'm pretty sure we were near the top in 2012).
And yeah, we needed 3s and spacing. You don't pay a max guy for that and you don't give a 4 year deal to a defensively challenged 2.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @qrex @SeinfeldOKC I think Lamb would've done fine. Butler literally could not stay in front of any of the opposing guards. So Lamb's crappy D would've been better than Butler's, he would've taken fewer dumb 2s and we'd have had slightly less spacing for KD and Russ to iso at the end of games.
I think Thabo was a better option purely for his defense. Still kept Paul in check and spelled KD and Russ on the perimeter.
@mattchant @sammasaaron Ok, you said he had his best year since 2011. I'd like you to defend that.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 I don't agree. And the correct player is Adams, who we wouldn't have without the Harden trade.
And everything else is the same speculation and counterfactuals the other side uses. Forgive me if I don't hold your speculation above mine. It's not impossible to believe we wouldn't be much, much better because we already have one of the most efficient offenses and diminishing returns don't reward redundancy.
Now if the argument is we should have shipped out Westbrook because he was worth more, well I still don't like it, but it's reasonable. But I don't see the value in keeping 3 high usage wings, none of whom are premier defenders (although hopefully that changes).
@mattchant @sammasaaron And this is my point. I've provided you with several numbers to describe why I think K-Mart fell off a cliff and is on the decline. You've responded by defending your initial position with no statistics. That's called faith.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 Except that I agree with Presti on shipping out Harden. He's a tremendous player. He was redundant on our team and I feel pretty vindicated by the crappiness with which he's treated his teammates in HOU.
I like rooting for KD and Russ. After Harden bitching about shots in our lone Finals win, I liked rooting for him a lot less.
We'd be better (for now) if we had Harden. But anyone who says they know how much better is as full of crap as anyone saying we're better off without him.
@mattchant @Jabb0310 Clay sucks. Despite that, the team is one of the best in the league. And this is just my opinion, but I think Presti had as much to do with Harden leaving. Now, I can't defend that other than it being my opinion. But perhaps that will help you understand where I'm approaching this from.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @qrex @SeinfeldOKC Butler shot 32% in the playoffs. If opponents were respecting his shot, they're idiots.
Butler was god-awful. Worse than replacement level awful. I'm not arguing that any of our other options are a better choice than K-Mart. I am arguing that Butler was so terrible a replacement level player might have pushed us over the top.
@FallenOSIRIS @Daft_Drunk @Emergenzy Yeah, he's no Mario Williams.
@duhsweetness @Emergenzy That's true. What does it have to do with the Cowboys?
@Jabb0310 @mattchant Well said Jabb. I'm just ornery.
@qrex @Emergenzy As someone who rooted for the Saints pre-Brees, I say: LIES!
@Emergenzy Yeah, but he's also responsible for those State Farm commercials. And he's the reason you aren't dating Olivia Munn. Probably.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @qrex @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @SeinfeldOKC
TS %: .608 to .553
eFG %: .551 to .486
WS: 7.0 to 5.3
WS/48: .157 to .117 (also tied for his lowest since his rookie year)
Tell me again how the shooter who shot worse this past season had his best year since 2011.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @qrex @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @SeinfeldOKC Ah, gtfo, the sign of the philosopher king.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @qrex @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @SeinfeldOKC I'm pointing out that for someone who makes frequent recourse to advanced stats, I'm not seeing any.
@mattchant @sammasaaron @qrex @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @SeinfeldOKC Oh, per 36? Do all the other cherry-picked stats agree?
@mattchant @sammasaaron @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @qrex @SeinfeldOKC Kevin Martin is good, but the problem was Butler had huge minuses even in the games we won. He didn't warrant 4 mpg and we gave him 20. Considering we pushed the Spurs harder than the Heat did, give those minutes to Cole Aldrich and it gives us a better chance to win.
Edit: And Thabo sucked on offense, but his D was better than anything we got from Butler.
@mattchant @qrex @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @SeinfeldOKC K-Mart also fell off a cliff this season and is on the decline. Great investment.
@mattchant @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @qrex @SeinfeldOKC We might be NBA champions if Ibaka's calf didn't get injured.
Edit: You know, or had ANYONE else playing Bulter's minutes.
@mattchant @Jabb0310 @harmlesslyfatal @qrex @SeinfeldOKC I'm sorry, is there no position in between? There are those of us that think Durant is reasonable, knows more about the franchise situation than any DTer, and think your insistence on the veracity of counterfactuals is absurd.
@Crow I mean, numbers are fun and all, @Crow, but I doubt there's anyone who looks at advanced stats before repping a yogurt company.
@epicurean @Tvaddic Plus, being famous, he won't even have to try hard. "Where'd you get your new car?" "Dude, I bought from that pothead Browns player! It was awesome!"
Because what else is there to do in Ohio?
Not the best 'click-bait' but I think these questions and responses were the most interesting from the Reggie interview:
Can you explain to us who don’t play the game at a high level, the fans who’ve never been in that situation, why it’s important to start? We keep hearing from the organization, from coaches ‘It’s not who starts, it’s who finishes.’ And they point to guys like Manu Ginobili and Jamal Crawford coming off the bench and having success. Why is it important for guys in the NBA to start?
For some people it’s important. To others it’s not. It’s very prideful for me. I feel like I’m very talented. I feel like I can lead a team. That’s just how I’ve been raised and that’s just how I’ve always felt. I want to be the guy in charge. I want to be the guy leading the team. The head of the snake. I guess that’s just how I’m encrypted DNA-wise. I played quarterback in high school. I had a year I was a receiver. But I was more comfortable playing quarterback. I’ve just always been good leading my team. That's how I’ve always been, being vocal. And when the ball’s in my hand, I feel like I can make the right plays and just impact the team. I definitely want to finish the game. That is the most important. But I’ve never envisioned myself coming off the floor. I always felt like I’d start the game and finish and play every minute of every game if that’s what’s asked of me. That’s one of the goals I’ve had and I still have to this day.
How are contract negotiations going?
We haven’t really talked about it much this summer. I know my representation and the Thunder have been talking. But mostly I haven’t really gotten to talk super much about it. I’ve been busy. I think we’re just trying to figure things out and hopefully we can get a deal done.
Do you think something will get done before the deadline?
I’m not sure. I’m always hopeful. I’m hoping for the best, expecting the worst. That’s just how I kind of approach things. I’m just happy and blessed to be able to play basketball another day and wake up another day. Just seeing another day is a blessing. I hope to get things done. But if not, it is what it is. I can’t really dwell on it. I have to go out there and compete. That’s where I am. I have to go out there and enjoy the game and trust that my representation and us sitting down and figuring things out is hopefully going to lead to us getting something done before the deadline.
In your mind, what’s it going to take to get done?
Communication. We have to figure out things that we can do on both ends. What we envision for the organization from both ends. I’d like to play a certain way. When it’s all said and done and I hang up my jersey, hang up my shoes, I have many goals that I want to accomplish. So I think it’s going to be about what’s the vision for obtaining those goals from both parts and what’s the vision that we have moving forward.

If an NBA player doesn't *want* to start, they shouldn't be in the NBA. If they don't recognize that everyone can't start, they shouldn't be on your team.
Pretty sure Reggie gets that - and minutes and closing go a long way. Given his work and play, he certainly deserves to start, whether or not he gets to immediately.
@nowthatsThunderBball @L0rv If he missed the first one, yes. If he made it, no.

@Durants Shimmy I'm sure it had nothing to do with the 4 day weekend he was already enjoying.

@Legendary_Dork @sammasaaron I just like irony.
@Sustainable Parameters @sammasaaron @FallenOSIRIS @King of Carrot Flowers the third Yeah, I'm guessing KD is their attempt to get into the world market.
@Jabb0310 @sammasaaron @ThabeetsGoldSpot @Marko (Lacoste baby) Thabo's wife.
I'm a horrible person for this, but I really hope Love and Irving have season ending injuries in preseason and LeBron ends up playing on the exact same type of team he left Cleveland to get away from.
@ThabeetsGoldSpot @Marko (Lacoste baby) Mitch clearly grows organic at home.
@Marko (Lacoste baby) There's a reason for that.
@FallenOSIRIS @King of Carrot Flowers the third Doesn't Nike have much better international recognition?
Offseason is the worst.
@Webster81 @sammasaaron Weird. I hope it's in Quantum Mechanics.
