At his price and age though I wouldn't be surprised if he gets snagged by a bottom feeder.

@Xxxxxnew I was at lunch with my boss and we got on the topic of NHL coaches which randomly led to the topic of Ted Nolan getting fired after his first coaching run.

Ten minutes later Ted Nolan walks into the diner and sits down.

One month later he was announced as the new Sabres coach. Crazy chain of events.

PS: This was at a small hole in the wall diner in NB by the way.

@DeclanK @colino17 That's what I mean. He's great at what he does, and the offense might still come, but at this point any expectations of him being a saviour 1C, which I have seen bandied about on here from time to time, seem unrealistic.

@DeclanK Interesting bit on Couturier given that there are some on here, IIRC, who seem to think that he would be the answer to our number one center hole.

While he was drafted with the belief that he would be a Staal-type center, it appears that his development has been more towards what we expect from our own draftee, Gauthier.

Think of Dion and Kessel last year. And more recently think of Spezza who just resigned.

Anecdotally speaking it seems that his goals and assists are on game tying or go ahead goals.

@Forever17 I'm not including Kadri in a package for any of those guys.

Berglund - Possible and would be a decent 2-way center if you can get him cheap.

O'Reilly - Good player but has benefited from the hype train which he himself is riding which will only lead to rising salary demands and the risk of losing him as UFA.

Couturier - Another good young 2-way guy but I don't see him getting moved unless you overpay greatly which makes it not worth it.

Staal - Cap and age are concerns. Admittedly a great player, but I'm unsure he serves the team's needs right now and going forward.

I don't see it, at least not yet. It will look like a knee-jerk reaction.

Plus finding a team that can accommodate the cap hit is difficult this time of the season. Maybe at the deadline or in the summer when the cap implications are more manageable.

On another note, I was looking at our record compared to Detroit's. Same amount of wins, yet we are three points behind them despite playing one more game. Detroit has more losses in OT than losses in regulation. That is what we need to strive for. You can't win every game, but if you put in a legitimate effort and keep games close you can at least gain points in the games you do lose.

Those are the small things that make the difference between a wildcard playoff spot and drafting 5th to 10th.

Seriously, who gives two flying f*cks if they are saluting or not. For all I care, as long as they are winning, or at least putting in a legitimate effort they can leave the ice with a one finger salute and their bare asses aimed at the fans.

@Cameron19 @Yan28 Agreed but I think things are starting to reach their boiling point. Up until this season it at least felt like some progression was being made, albeit at a glacial pace. But now it seems that the same stupid mistakes and lack of effort exist. The pieces in place should keep progressing, but instead they are regressing.

I know in my case my frustration stems not from losing, but for the complete lack of effort that a number of well paid athletes seem to have.

I've been optimistic for a long time, but the glass is looking increasingly more empty.

If only real life was like video games. I decided to do a rebuild in GM mode in NHL 15. Traded away a ton of players (Phaneuf, Kessel, etc) and ended up with younger players (ex: Forsberg) and first round picks. Kept some younger ones and just ran with them. Somehow ended up winning the cup despite simming almost everything and then drafted McDavid, Strome, and a few other top prospects with the first rounders I had acquired in trades. Doing all this while being a cap floor team (so much so that the next year when the cap went up I had to sign a few vets just to reach the floor.

@lou19 We need a team that can decide whether they want to be the best team in the league or the worst team in the league...because looking at individual games, depending on which game you are looking at, they have looked like both.

The problem is that some nights they show up and play like it's a playoff game seven. And other nights they don't show up at all. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground. If they would put in the effort for all 82 games then we would make the playoffs. We likely wouldn't lead the league or even the division but there is enough talent to make the playoffs and make a push. The problem is that the effort only occurs for half the season. Meaning that the other half we can't win a game unless our opponent also comes out asleep on skates.

There is no reason that every game should be a blow out, either for us or against us. It's hard for the fan base not to flip back and forth between such extremes when the team itself keeps doing so.
