@Komas Taberle @peterbleafs And that right there is the problem. You can have all the talent in the world but it means nothing if you don't have the effort and dedication to back it up, especially come playoff time when those things mean even more.

@TorontoMapleLeafs @phaneufoundlander You either die (are traded) a hero, or you live (play for the Leafs) long enough to become a villain.

@Burtonboy What's your opinion of Bettman going to be once his pet project wins the lottery?
22 hours, 13 minutes ago on Game 49 Scoring Chances: Devils 2 vs. Maple Leafs 1 (SO)
@Burtonboy Agreed. Granberg wasn't an all-star out there, but he was impressive enough that I noticed him.
The cupboards are already partially stocked.
I really think that if we trade some of our stars for younger pieces that are close to the NHL or already in the NHL then we won't be that much worse in the short term than we are now. And we will probably be better within 3-4 years.
I don't see it as a rebuild as much as a retool. Don't target guys that are 3 years out. Target guys like Jones, Forsberg, Strome, Nelson, etc.
22 hours, 14 minutes ago on Game 49 Scoring Chances: Devils 2 vs. Maple Leafs 1 (SO)
@Burtonboy I completely understand what you are saying. I'm at the point where I want them to lose solely based on the fact that I can't see them making the playoffs and I would rather the season not be a complete waste.
That makes it hard to watch the games at this point because I can't watch and not want them to win, it's just in my DNA.

It's official...the only way we get McDavid is ridiculous luck...or ridiculous idiocy by whatever GM has ridiculous luck.

@GLG Did you have to rub it in. Ouch. Salt meet wound.

@Burtonboy @Mind Bomb @Yaknowwhat @colino17 I'll give you a 3rd rounder for it
1 day, 22 hours ago on Wednesday Mashup: Back At It vs. Devils
@Whalz It was 3 years ago and Santo is a versatile player who could be very valuable to a lot of playoff teams, especially if injuries arise.
1 day, 23 hours ago on Wednesday Mashup: Back At It vs. Devils
@Whalz It's not his trade value, but his value to the team I'm looking at. Anything less than a second and I'm trying to resign him because his work ethic is a good model for the team, especially if we trade some core pieces and go younger.
Also Paul Gaustad was traded for a 1st...he had 21 pts that season.
@Yaknowwhat I think a lot of it depends on the potential returns. If someone is not willing to give at least a 2nd for Santo, then I keep him. Probably the same (maybe a 3rd) for Winnik.
Despite liking him I think Lupul has to go for the best available package.
At least one of Dion/Phil has to go for the cap space, and preferably both if the value is there in the returns.
Now whether or not that is a retool or rebuild depends on the players/picks you get back. If you get a bunch of picks back it's going to be a rebuild. If we get a bunch of 20-23 year old blue chippers and draft McDavid or Eichel then I would say it's closer to a retool.
@Burtonboy @MaxwellHowe @Yaknowwhat I was thinking the same range as you, with preferably a 5 yr term. Anything above $5.5m and I would say that the trade return in addition to the cap savings becomes more valuable than anything Franson brings to the table.
@MaxwellHowe @Yaknowwhat The point of a tear-down is to replace the aging core pieces with younger core pieces that will grow along with McDavid. Not that it matters, McDavid is very unlikely.
If the Leafs and all the teams below us continue at the same pace as they have for the last 10 games the standings will end (roughly) as such:
Buffalo = 31 pts
Toronto = 54 pts
Arizona = 55 pts
Minnesota = 67 pts
Edmonton = 68 pts
Columbus = 73 pts
Philadelphia = 80 pts
New Jersey = 81 pts
Carolina = 82 pts

@Mcost61 @Burtonboy But can Lupes stay healthy for 6-8 weeks to fill that hole until Okposo comes back?
3 days, 16 hours ago on Monday Mashup: Perennial All Star
@Burtonboy So...not traded. Otherwise Petey wouldn't be the one making the announcement.

@Radar O'Rielly @Burtonboy @DeclanK
Nonis: Hey Dion noticed you weren't at practice today, where are you?
Dion: L.A., taking a maintenance day.
Nonis: How do you like it there?
Dion: It's awesome, weather is amazing?
Nonis: I'm glad to hear you say that.....
I've just come to a realization. The cap makes me hate players. I would like so many more of our players at about $2m less than their current cap hits. Whereas now I can't help but look at players and think "he is not worth that much money".
@Mcost61 I would love to keep Clarkson if we could trade 2-3 million of his cap hit.
Although Nonis would probably trade 2-3 million of Clarkson's cap for 3-4 million of someone else's cap. =P
@dlb, just dlb @Burtonboy If the game is broadcast SOMEWHERE in HD, then you can get it on HS in HD. The problem with the Hamilton game was that it was not broadcast elsewhere in HD, so it was pretty crappy quality.

@dlb, just dlb You're too creative to be an NHL GM. ;)
3 days, 21 hours ago on Monday Mashup: Perennial All Star
@dlb, just dlb Might as well sell and try something different. Keeping what we have clearly results in the same mediocrity. If we make a move maybe at least we can draft a potential young star, and maybe pull a Calgary like comeback where after trying to bottom out we end up with a team that gels better.
3 days, 22 hours ago on Monday Mashup: Perennial All Star
Trying to figure out possible trade values. Here's my rough guesses:
Kessel = 1st/blue chip prospect/lesser prospect
Phaneuf = 1st/lesser prospect/cap dump
Franson = 1st
Santorelli = 2nd or 3rd or 4th
Reimer = Late 1st or 2nd or medium prospect
Gardiner = 1st or good prospect
Winnik = 2nd or 3rd or 4th
Lupul = Late 1st or good prospect
Robidas = Late round pick or See: Clarkson
Clarkson = Laughter and the sound of a phone hanging up
@Yaknowwhat Throw jerseys on the ice.

@JWaterdrager @DeclanK Might be, it does seem too good to be true, but I've been using it this year and:
A) it works great
B) I've never heard a single person complain about it, and
C) It's been operating for years and the NHL hasn't made any move to shut them down.

Upton is a NYR fan.
Bozak is a fan of Upton (or parts of her anyway).
Therefore, Bozak will be traded to NYR.
6 days, 17 hours ago on Friday Mashup: Nylander set for Marlies debut tonight in Hamilton
@LN-093 @Xxxxxnew The problem I have with a lot of our players, including but not limited to Bozak, is that they have no drive to win. Players like Toews have this desire to win and be the best and it shines through in their play. We have a few guys like that, Komarov, Santorelli, Polak, and even Kadri and Lupul, but we have way to many guys that lack the fire and dedication to do whatever it takes to win.
6 days, 18 hours ago on Friday Mashup: Nylander set for Marlies debut tonight in Hamilton
@Yaknowwhat @dlb, just dlb NO, we either get the Fonz or no deal! ;)
@MaxwellHowe @DIGGLER _69 Not really, given where those picks are (late round) and the fact that Tampa has been loading up to make a run, and JVR's salary, I could see them doing that.
I think we lose that trade though, unless we get really lucky with one of the picks. And we don't get lucky with much.
@DIGGLER _69 Nah. Despite his flaws JVR is still valuable at his price range. If I'm giving him up it's for a more sure thing like a very early 1st rounder or a blue chip prospect.
@MaxwellHowe @philthethrill That's fine, let him go with Phil wherever we trade him. If Bozie goes somewhere else Phil will need a new roomie anyway.
@Xxxxxnew Those would be the worst two (Clarkson as well but he isn't going anywhere). Guys that have a couple years left wouldn't be too bad because they would be off the cap before we needed that space back again. But Kessel and Phaneuf have long terms.
I just hope that if moves are made then we don't get saddled with retaining tons of salary. I would hate to have $1m+ on the cap for each of Kessel and Phaneuf for the next 6-7 years.
@gjdevlin If the team is not on their no trade list, or on their trade list, depending on how the contract is phrased, then they can't veto a trade to a pre-authorized team. To be traded to a non-pre-authorized team they would need to waive their NTC.
@Yaknowwhat @Kessel81 @Cameron19 Hey Oldtimers hockey is only like one step away from the NHL. Those guys could get called up anytime. Every game is a tryout! ;)
6 days, 21 hours ago on Friday Mashup: Nylander set for Marlies debut tonight in Hamilton
@Yaknowwhat @Jmessih And that is why we NEED those guys. It is the dysfunctional and lazy ones we need to get rid of. Until we can draft some more skilled guys and grow them under the right culture we need to run with a lot of "lunchbox" guys.
@Cameron19 @Burtonboy Same here...Skills are usually fun to watch, whereas the game itself is usually boring as shit.

@FRyan @colino17 Hmmm...interesting. What position is he? And how big is he? What kind of player in the NHL would he compare to?
@Burtonboy @colino17 Figured....just seemed like such a random statement
6 days, 23 hours ago on Friday Mashup: Nylander set for Marlies debut tonight in Hamilton
@Burtonboy What? Really?
@flappypaddle Geez that is a lot of nominees.
@FRyan Him and Strome were the players of the game for Cherry's prospect game weren't they?
@traNsplantEdneWfie Bjustad and Barkov for Kessel!! =P

@GLG Good plan, but your order is wrong. If step 1 is to become President of MLSE then that event will have happened in the present. Therefore when you get to step 3 you will be going back in time, to a time before the present and therefore before you were President of MLSE, thereby rendering you incapable of proceeding to steps 3.5 through 5.
Therefore, may I propose that you alter your plan by splitting step 3 into two halves or two separate steps, and then inserting the current step 1 between those two halves, thereby making you President of MLSE in the past, and thereby by extension into the present and the future.
Pretty simple isn't it?
@ProfessorRance Bought it on a payment plan...$5m per year for 7 years
