@wendelsfist @BPsotka Awesome. Good to know if he does well and another forward goes down in the next month that he won't have to clear again.

Been out all day. News? Did Kozun clear?
@wendelsfist JvR is the worst for pleading innocence after an obviously illegal play.

@Burtonboy Anybody know his history against the Ducks?

@Xxxxxnew My favourite Leaf growing up.

@B_Leaf @BPsotka @Archie Vanlanda Even in strong drafts, there are lots of players that don't make it. I think there is more to lose than gain with this trade, values and probabilities considering.
Although I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about OEL.
1 week, 3 days ago on Game Review: Game #28, Toronto Maple Leafs 2 vs. Detroit Red Wings 1 (SO)
@B_Leaf @Archie Vanlanda I think this is overpayment. Lots of value is added to the pick because it could be 1st or 2nd. But in this case, I think we only win the trade if we get McDavid- and we lose it very badly if we pick 8th or something.
@skiingallday @BPsotka But against easier opposition, I expect them to succeed. JVR woke up well (although didn't pot any) last time they took Phil away from him. I think he said something like playing away from Kessel made him want to impact the game on his own, instead of watching Kessel do it.

@skiingallday I don't think it has to be a joke, Alter just has them in the wrong order. Lupul-Kadri-Kessel; JVR-Bozak-Clarkson; Winnik-Holland-Santorelli; Booth-Smith-Kozun.
I've wanted this switch for the top two lines for a while. Didn't we have this, if not something real similar earlier in the season before Lupul went down?
@Ze_theLeafsFan @Tommy Cat
(6g-5a-10pts) – (7g-5a-11pts) – (8g-3a-10pts)
None of the pts totals have been updated.
@Burtonboy fuck that.

@Mcost61 @BPsotka @mikeyboy Its not on the players IMO. Our systems frequently have a high forward or two in effort to spread out the opposition. I want more back pressure and to be unafraid of sending in a 4-man attack.
If one of our defensemen joins the rush, a forward hangs back, even if we can race and outnumber them offensively. We don't like sending a 5-man unit on the rush forwards, or on the backcheck back. I want that to change.
1 week, 6 days ago on Leafs Notebook – December 8
@mikeyboy They look good. If they slip up, I think it would happen if their defense stopped producing- but they are given such a green light to join the offense, I don't think they'll stop.
I wish our defensemen had such support, and could show off their offensive prowess more.
Wow what a winner by Kyle Palmeri. Too bad JvR doesn't look as JvR-like as Palmeri does.

@Savo43 @BPsotka haha goddamnit. @whalz
@whalz @BPsotka I correctly spell his name 50% of the time.
That's my biggest complaint about our future captain.
@Dogger And Fenton says there are only 6 number one d-men in the league.
I think Franson is a benefactor of the coaching systems. They have him pinching often and early, which really suits his play.
Conversely, I think Rielly and Phaneuf are not being used correctly. Rielly with a struggling vet (so far less even TOI) and no PP time and Dion on his weaker side.
Goddamn I want Rielly-Dion on the point for one of the PPs.
@whalz @Cameron19 @mr_hanie They are eerily similar. They both hate the spotlight as well.
@Marlies Man @Yan28 Yep Ho Sang I think.
@Yan28 I absolutely hate the logic of trading away good players because they`re going to decline. With this logic, we`d constantly rebuilding- each of these players are entering their prime.
That's what you're supposed to do with a 35 year old. Not a 27 year old.
He is literally one year older than Bernier.
@AlbertaMapleLeaf @Yan28 although I find it depends on the player, whether or not it is more impressive. Kaberle always had his best offensive numbers when the Leafs struggled, which made me assume trusting others less improved his game- but that made it tough to win much with him, seeing as his game would never peak at the same time as the rest of the roster.
@Yan28 Compared to Leivo's rookie season with 42 in 59 games. Not bad for Connor.
@Optimustic @BPsotka Thanks
@Optimustic Who scored?
If his play continues to mid-January, and he was willing to take a shorter term deal (I haven't heard what he wants, but I'd assume he doesn't want a short-term deal) would anybody sign Franson to $6 x 3 years or 4 yours?
@theacs1966 @BPsotka @sniperstar @B_Leaf Well said.
2 weeks, 1 day ago on GDT: Game #26, Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Vancouver Canucks (7 p.m., CBC)
@theacs1966 @BPsotka @sniperstar @B_Leaf I agree, stupid. Although I think he takes more flak on here than he should. I like him more than most do, but this one was a bad assessment to make. It was basically only a comparison of offensive stats, and Kadri's look terrible. Watching him play, you could see that he looked dangerous while also playing his best NHL hockey to date.
@theacs1966 @BPsotka @sniperstar We could have chosen players other than Orr and FML to resign for league minimum. The options were aplenty.
We could have given Ashton (who didn't look bad at the beginning), Bodie, and Smith actual minutes instead of 0:07/game instead of dressing Smithson, Orr, and FML.
@theacs1966 @sniperstar @B_Leaf Pretty sure it was Dreger who said this.
@sniperstar We didn't give the fourth line a chance last year though. We could have brought up some players, not played Orr and FML, and had the threat there anyways.
@In it to Winnik Did Randy say no Kozun?
@Zep2 Kessel wanted out, which would have made it difficult to stand pat.

How long until JvR gets removed from the top unit? He and Gardiner looked terrible that period IMO

Oh, Tambellini's smugger and smugger face for each won lottery.
No pity from me.

@MikeGartner11 @Bring the Cup Home @Xxxxxnew He can
Kadri on the PP: I noticed when he gets the puck at the top of the circle, he doesn't turn his body to face the net, causing no threat of a shot. Even when Phaneuf or Kessel have the puck closer to the opposite point, he doesn't turn his body and ready himself for a one-timer. Is this because our PP systems don't have him ready to shoot unless the puck comes up from Bozak beside the net on Phil's side, or because he isn't used to playing the point, or because he has little PP confidence right now?
It looked like he expected to play quarterback from the top of the circle. We don't need another quarterback (as long as Dion and Phil are doing it, which I don't like anyways) but we need him to be a threat.
@MikeGartner11 @Cameron19 @BPsotka @dlb Mad Sell high because he's not in the correct roster spot though? I don't think he's incapable of being a player on a cup-winning-team, especially for that dollar amount.
@MikeGartner11 @ninepaces @BPsotka I did- but didn't like it for purely irrational reasons. There's a Bozak fan in me through and through.
For the odd logic of I don't want three stars accross my first line. I think you never get your value out of that, because not all three could have the puck as much as they wanted- especially in a salary cap era, I don't like it. I like the Hawks' setup with Toews and Hossa, then Sharp and Kane; both of those lines are complemented by a cheaper, less talented player. I think JvR can reach the same level of last season, and then we don't need a third star in between he and Kessel.
The issue others have with my logic, I guess, is they see the center position as too important for a complementary player. I think it is do-able, and we could win with JvR-Bozak-Kessel. Or preferably: Lupul-Kadri-Kessl; JvR-Bozak-[supporting winger].
@Cameron19 @dlb Mad And I didn't consider, he ends games in an attempted-shut-down role too.
I'm glad for the support. Have always been a Bozak defender.
Doesn't consider that virtually all of Bozak's TOI without Kessel is on the PK- less those three games where he and JvR looked pretty damn good on the second line, struggling only to finish.
EDIT: Those are 5-on-5 stats. I'm an idiot?
Anybody see Mirtle's tweet? James Mirtle @mirtle 1h
Had a few angry fans respond to my Bozak piece today saying Kessel isn't only one driving offence. Here's a chart
@deedrag I predict at least Yakupov or Eberle gone by the deadline. And if I were making the decisions Hall would be moved for something good.
@Ze_theLeafsFan @Anthony Petrielli @Cameron19 @peterbleafs Definitely think Phil's tendency to stay healthy is underrated as well.
@Burtonboy As a player?
@Anthony Petrielli @BPsotka I don't understand this idea that Bozak is weak defensively. He's strong on faceoffs, great at pickpocketing, and plays low enough in his zone most of the time- and the rest of the time, I blame our systems for spreading out forwards and defense.
I think JvR (even moreso than Phil) has been terribly weak defensively, and Phil himself hasn't been good at all this year. But given our systems and his linemates, what he has done defensively definitely impresses me. I actually agree with (Horacek?) that he is becoming one of the better defensive players in the league. We just aren't using him as a shutdown center, with a shutdown line as Bergeron and others (Stastny last year) have been used- which are the typical comparables.
@Anthony Petrielli @Cameron19 @peterbleafs He's perhaps the lone part of good news in Edmonton this year. Honestly Jon Tavares-esque potential there with how he carries the play.
@Cameron19 @peterbleafs The issue is that they can't even afford to take many shitty contracts because of how insanely they've payed their "stars". They can't fill roster spots with an overpaid (but surprisingly strong this year) Deryk Engelland a la Calgary because they simply can't afford it.
They've damaged their team so deeply I think it'll be at least 5 years before they can be competitive again- and that's assuming they do everything right. I think trading one of RNH or Hall (and I would trade Hall) and one of Eberle or Yakupov in a blockbuster (or two, not really saying package them) to bring in successful role players, defense with lots of potential (agree with you here), and leaders.
But this team needs a big shakeup.
@Anthony Petrielli @BPsotka Not sure your stance on Bozak, but how would you compare his worth to Eberle's?
