@Keeon  I think Reilly was a late birthday as well.

@mlclearwater  And avoid spending to the cap simply to spend to the cap. I envy our cap-situation when Burke was top man.

@mcloki @BPsotka  Honestly thinking back, I don't know of a single time when Reimer/ Bernier was bumped when it was Phaneuf on the ice. I thought he was especially mean the first half of the year when no stars/ top lines were getting by him and I assume (god I really hope) he was fighting some sort of injury through the second half of the year.

@MaxwellHowe @BPsotka @mr_hanie  Look at Hockey Future. They don't consider Reilly a prospect yet Buffalo a few slots higher has Grigorenko, from the same year, raising their stock. The one absolute steal we have is counting for nothing in their rankings. I take it all with a grain of salt- and those sites are good for comparing different things, none of which is a team's overall success at the drafting board.

Dobberprospects is a site I'd not heard before, but 13 seconds on their site brought "*Prospects based on relevance in a fantasy-hockey keeper league, not actual talent on the ice" to my eyes. I wouldn't consider that at all.

I look at our prospects and watch them develop, and I must say I am extremely excited about Reilly, Percy, Leivo, and Verhaeghe. I think our prospect pool is week at centre, where we go from Holland to McKegg. But I wouldn't say we're in nearly as bad a position as these three sites.

@The_Polish_Cannon  I think that just means that the coaching was to blame. We did play exceptionally well on a few occasions, something that a shittily-rostered team could not accomplish. We won a couple games through out working and out-skilling very good teams. But if compete is an issue every other game, get a new coach.

@mcloki @BPsotka  That bothers me to no end. When Reimer is throwing punches, something is wrong. Too bad Fraser only had one knee this season.

@mcloki @BPsotka  Strangely, I think it was a combination of Reimer struggling and Bolland being injured (/Grabovski- 1 less centre, nontheless). Holland simply couldn't provide the offense and Kadri needs to be pushed back to 3c at times for sheltered minutes. McClement just doesn't do it playing 20 minutes a game. He shouldn't get any even strength ice time when we are losing in the 3rd period.

@vinoa @BPsotka  I think they were a better team and we were playing better for much of it. Yes, it relied on strong goaltending, but every successful team needs a good goalie- you may as well us it.

I agree with what he said (at some point, maybe when he was in Anaheim?): "If the goalie can't stop the puck from out there, we'll get a new one."

That being said, I 100% blame RC for Reimer's failures this year. We should have started him against Ottawa when we were flying high, but RC ruined our entire advantage of 1a 1b system.

One big issue I had with Carlyle's system was when our top line was on the ice late in a game while protecting a lead- they would still try to score off the rush. Even if you aren't dangerous from the cycle, try to waste some time. I can't count the number of turnovers late in games because Phil or JvR took a shot when they could have carried it to the corner, resulting in a odd-man-rush against our goalie.

Lots of the system did work. Let's not forget he outcoached Julien in the playoffs last year (I think most of us agree?). But we have a very young group and IMO the biggest strength of a young group is their ability to get fired up- Carlyle didn't provide the motivation needed, and our desperation did not surface during games. I do think it's time for him to go, but he is still a hell of a coach.

Another thought- Nonis' entire success last season was his willingness to do what Burke was unwilling to: he trusted young guys and forced Carlyle's hand by removing Connolly and others. Very early, Gardiner, (an unproven) Fraser, Holzer, Kostka, and Frattin were on the roster. Steckel and Connolly and Komisarek found themselves off the big team. What if Nonis had removed Colton Orr/ McLaren/ Smithson from the roster? Would Carlyle have found trust in a young 4th line he was forced to ice?

Jerred ***** Smithson averaged almost nine minutes per game until we finally rid ourselves.

A few pieces of my opinion:

1. Franson, in recent games, has impressed me. He is making few mistakes, taking the body often and smartly. He wins more puck battles than Gardiner by far. I think fans were used to using him as a scapegoat and continue calling for him to be traded, but the reality is he is playing good hockey at the most crucial time of the year.

2. Gardiner, as well, has played well the last few games. He still stands up straight and has a high center of gravity, causing him to lose lots of battles- but he has been showing his upside for sure. It just bugs me when he takes the front of the net and doesn't get near the puck because he`s afraid to get his nose dirty.

3. Toronto referees seem to call more penalties. Bolland was an agitator in Chicago and knows what he can get away with, and he should be able to get away with a lot in such a meaningful game. The announcers pointed it out, and I agreed with them. The interference didn't change the game and the extra call I still think normally would be brushed off as extracurricular after the whistle.

4. Speaking of Bolland, he showed what he can bring against Detroit. He gives Carlyle the option of benching Kadri, and got knows Kadri needed a good benching. He's been soft on pucks in his own zone, gliding and stickhandling when Lupul's speed is unused and has not shown much creativity.

5. Reilly excitement.

6. McClement should get zero ice time when we are chasing a lead and at even strength. Kadri Bolland and Bozak all have significant offensive prowess and Bolland and Bozak are more than defensively competent.

7. I still think this entire situation could have been avoided is Reimer wasn't needlessly in the doghouse. Going with a 1a 1b tandem and not playing 1b for over a month is unacceptable. The entire strength in tandem goaltending is that you can handle an injury. Consider our position 3 weeks ago: In confident playoff seeding, with a semi-injured 1a goalie and a rested and motivated 1b.

Agree/disagree?

@Greg Fenton @BPsotka @Bruffins @Reversethecurse13 @TheCanucksnaphook  I don't think a) our players are used properly and b) our players have been without their own struggles. Lupul Kadri and Gardiner specifically should be expected to play better (and perhaps would beneath a new coach).

But I do think we have the core and many correct pieces to win. That is my point.

I can ask Lupul to drive the net. Kadri to move his feet. Gardiner to have intensity for the first 6 months of the season. I can ask Carlyle to keep McClement off the ice when we are trailing late in the game. I can ask Carlyle to use our depth. Kulemin to shoot more. Carlyle to use our goaltenders properly. Phaneuf and Bolland to be healthy.

I think we didn't play to the sum of our parts this season.

@Bruffins @Greg Fenton @Reversethecurse13 @TheCanucksnaphook  I think Chicago's Toewes is the only one on that roster to which we have no equivalent, and I think there are maximum 2-3 players in the league with such leadership skills.

@Greg Fenton @Bruffins @Reversethecurse13 @TheCanucksnaphook  I think they're young and their emotions determine much of their play. When on their game, I really think the Leafs can beat any team out there, but they seem to get very discouraged during their skids.

I don't want to get into whether or not our youth is good (I know you think many are already in their primes) but we can't pretend that we have a mature enough emotion-control. While I like our core youth and think we could win with them in a few years.

We should be embarrassed. If we're fire-sale-ing right now, we've got no hope for playoffs. How can we be pissed off if the team keeps losing when we aren't even hopeful for the next win? Let the players doubt themselves because that's their job. Our job is to support the team as long as we're still in contention and we're not near finished. Fix the team as armchair GM's in the off-season, and support the team we've put so much into.

Players can't play with no fans, and we're not fans if we're shitting on a team who has performed about on par with pre-season predictions. This place is no better than any MSM right now.
