@WereRiellyDoingThis @BPsotka @Savo43 I think Bozak has truly been the better center.
Kadri, except for half of the shortened season, I think is not moving as fast as he is capeable. He goes up on a rush and glides as he looks for a pass, or tries a nifty maneuver but forgets to keep his feet moving.
Bozak keeps up with Kessel because he never stops skating, and Kadri I do not think would be able to. I think PP1 could use Kadri's creativity (although we didn't really use anybody's creativity except for Franson) but Bozak is really only there for his faceoff abilities, and to spread out the skill. PK? I don't think Kadri would be effective.

@WereRiellyDoingThis @Savo43 @BPsotka I don't think Naz moves his feet enough to be used on the PK in the NHL. I agree he has untapped potential, but he is not the fastest player to begin with and I think his struggles stem from lazy (for want of a better word) skating, not lack of opportunity.
@Savo43 @WereRiellyDoingThis My point was that fans fall in love with an idea. You want a canadian center, I wanted a skilled center over a dman.
In reality, most of the time scouts have a far better understanding of which players are more talented than others.
@Savo43 @WereRiellyDoingThis @BPsotka I wanted Grigorenko, so I'm actually not allowed to be disappointed with our pick regardless.
I gave up that right.
@Savo43 @BPsotka I agree- but if they saw his potential as the current JBo, he wouldn't be top 10.
@Savo43 @BPsotka Haha I think those are comparisons to styles. People read too much into comparisons, using the comparables as projections.
That his skillset is comparable to a veteran NHLer, is impressive- it means he's learned both sides of the game and is mobile for a big body. But I don't expect him to have the same career arc at all.
@Savo43 @BPsotka And to go with that tenacity, he's always the smartest player on the ice- and usually the fastest too.
I'm not going to pretend I know much about Hanifin, but if we choose Strome over Marner I'll be disappointed.
@Savo43 @BPsotka By an insane amount, yes. Strome plays more of a Kane game- he finishes, but doesn't seem to provide a whole lot more. His success on the PK comes from faceoff abilities and reach.
I think the only reason Marner is compared to Kane is because of his size and speed, but his role on the Knights was nothing similar to Kane's. Kane drives the play at both ends, while Strome seems incredibly one-dimensional by comparison.

Having watched them both, I would be more afraid of Strome being not-a-center than Marner, at the NHL level.
@Bring the Cup Home @Mitch_S2 @TheColborneUltimatum @Cameron19 He was not playing like a top line player this year at all.
If he's part of the solution, its because you're valuing age/potential over actual play.
I think it would have hurt the Leafs less if JvR were injured this season than Bozak.

@Knights2Leafs Why would you elaborate.

@Marlies Man @WesternDP We can offer a different contract next year. Assuming his is not an AHL 2-year contract right now.

@Optimustic Is that 4-3 Marlies?
@Dougie Wraparound Don't pick Marner with our fourth then. Wait til next year.

@Yan416 What did we even get for Holzer?
@Anthony Petrielli @BPsotka @leafmealone @Savo43 That, I understand. Both are at minimums.
3 days, 17 hours ago on Friday Mashup: Overhaul in Edmonton, Sharks talking to Carlyle
@Anthony Petrielli @leafmealone @Savo43 I don't, for a second, believe that Phil or Dion have negative value.
@Luke_R He's inconsistent though. He has this thing where sometimes he allows an early goal, and if he does then expect 4 GA in the first period alone.
@MaxwellHowe @BPsotka Leafs fans* I think you mean. I agree. Never happy with good players we've got, because we don't have the others.

If the Rangers win the cup this year, are fans needing that 1C less urgently?
@monkeyman I believe his brother was the same height at 17, and ended up 6'3" was that story.

@FloorHockeyFlopper Isn't Brown a winger?
5 days, 23 hours ago on Tuesday Mashup: Todd McLellan in play
@traNsplantEdneWfie @BPsotka @Burn_the_Loov_Boats Alright
@Axle_Goalie Because he isn't as good as Hanifin or Marner
@FloorHockeyFlopper London too
@traNsplantEdneWfie @BPsotka @Burn_the_Loov_Boats Same divisions, but Wildcards get crossed or something? That's how the NHL plans to have rivalries set up again. Forces the same teams to beat one another, year after year.
@traNsplantEdneWfie @Burn_the_Loov_Boats There are divisions during playoffs.
6 days ago on Tuesday Mashup: Todd McLellan in play
@Axle_Goalie Marner was a natural center moved to the wing. Right now, all we know is that he can play wing very well, and stood out as a center for 7 playoff games (16pts). He is stronger defensively than Strome, can skate faster, and see's the ice better. He has slightly better hands, but is smaller.
Strome is strong of faceoffs, but during play assumes the role of a winger more than a center. His main weakness is skating, an issue that his older brother Ryan had at the same age, but overcame.
Both of which played the last few seasons in the midst of growth spurts. Srome is now 6'3", and Marner 5'11".
@Leafs_17 @BPsotka @Cameron19 Thanks
6 days, 2 hours ago on Tuesday Mashup: Todd McLellan in play
@DeclanK But Marner is too small for the NHL.
@traNsplantEdneWfie @B_Leaf @Diggler_69 No. Bozak is a skilled hockey player.
@Bruffins @BPsotka @Xxxxxnew I think that's the media's idea of him but really haven't seen any indication of it myself. Yes, he gave up on the team this year. It is tough not to when management themselves gives up. If he just wanted to score goals, all of this losing wouldn't bother him I think. He's shown that it does.
@Cameron19 @BPsotka I would agree if there were whisperings of frustration out of Florida- but all I ever hear is how excited they all are about their young and improving skilled players. It might make sense if Barkov or Huberdeau weren't working out, but the opposite seems to be the case.
Did Lou trade for Kovy before the giant contract? Or was it always a free-agent addition.
@Xxxxxnew I think definitely Phaneuf. But you could make the argument that an up-and-coming team IE Florida would be a great one to move to (think of Jagr resigning there).
Kessel I think has always made it clear how important it is he plays in a hockey market. I know he doesn't like that attention, but I feel like he wants to be "the guy". He wants to accomplish something big in hockey, and I don't think he wants to be a secondary scorer anywhere. Despite how the fanbase and media treat him, I've always gathered that he loves playing here- and he even specified Toronto when he asked to leave Boston didn't he?
@Savo43 We already have enough goalies that struggle with 100+ foot shots I guess.
EDIT: Honestly, our goaltending depth is fairly strong. I assume he would want to play in a location where there is better opportunity to make the big league.
I feel as though Kessel/ Phaneuf isn't going to a young team. Young teams are looking forward to the next few years being better. They aren't going to be giving up young exciting prospects/ picks for these players, because it is in the wrong direction. It is akin to Burke saying a few years ago that he could get us into the playoffs if he moved young pieces.
I think it makes sense that they go to an older successful team, trying to get younger and prolong their success. Consider LA, Detroit, Chicago, San Jose, Carolina (if they, as they did last offseason, still think they can do it), Boston, (New Jersey- similar situation as Carolina) or Vancouver.
Else, they could go to a middle-age team looking to tweak their cores, and change their positions of strength (Pitts, Montreal, Washington, Philly, NYR, STL, MIN, DAL.
The only young team I could see making the trade is EDM- they have to give up their current strategy at some point.
But Florida moving Barkov? I don't see that happening.
NOTE: I'm considering the team's age/success situations only here. I know that many of these would not be fits.
@mtommy @deedrag haha
1 week ago on Toronto Maple Leafs’ Kyle Dubas on Brady & Walker
@deedrag Bozak is a salary dump? Also not sure about planning entire first line as unproven commodities.
EDIT nvm they're all futures. Didn't realize how far away you were looking
@Cameron19 @Yaknowwhat Listed heights would be from the beginning of the year, no? Maybe Connor and Hanifin grew while Strome is finished.
It must be easy to GMs across the league to fleece the Leafs on the trading market. Our fans do it more than anybody.
I understand Rask for Raycroft now.
@Marlies Man @BPsotka @Omac13 Because you don't draft sure things? Many fans forget that in draft hype.
@Marlies Man @Omac13 @Dan39 @BPsotka
There have been #1 picks in recent years with less trade value than Kessel. And they were #1 on their own, regardless of the competition.
@Marlies Man @BPsotka @Omac13 I agree. He wasn't a generational player at the draft- he had to prove he could play first, and that first season he was a good player. Still not generational. Many players put up 100 pts in a season, the difference was that Sid still had time to develop Aand I don't think anybody thinks Eichel is the next Crosby.
@Jon5200 @Marlies Man @Omac13 If you think Phil's trade value is determined by those numbers, you're way too lost already.
How many other teams wish they had his contract with him? 29.
@Marlies Man @Omac13 You don't often draft a generational player. Even Crosby wasn't. You draft and then hope that they develop. He might be a generational prospect, but he isn't a player yet.
There have been many players with more hype, with less success.
@Dan39 @BPsotka @Omac13 To reuse one of AP's favourite arguments lately: you hope that the 2nd overall becomes as good as Phil Kessel.
It has the chance to be better, and the chance to be worse.
@Dan39 @Omac13 Don't be an ass
