@Greg Fenton @Cameron19 @Mind Bomb @ingy56 Of what you just listed, Ovechkin is the only player not hands-down better than his comparison.
What if the difference in skill isn't as obvious?
@djamon @Mattmark I don't care how elite a player is. Nobody gels with every player and certainly the definition of an elite player is not the ability to perform with any linemates. it is to perform at a higher level than other players.
It is ridiculous to claim he can thrive with anybody. Even Gretzky couldn't play with everybody.

I'd like it if the introduction to analytics article was linked to the bottom. Thought it was really useful and would be good to reference while reading this (and I'm sure more statistical analytic articles to come).

@Jay_Berg It was the same players the year before.
1 week, 3 days ago on Friday Mashup: The Swarm & Coaching Duties
@Greg Fenton @The_Polish_Cannon We didn't change our systems when needed though. Teams figured out how to beat our PK that was so effective last year, and we adapted horribly (/not at all).

@Bobsyouruncle I find it hard to believe RC was brought back with the same freedom to make roster and ice-time decisions.

@Savo43 @Burtonboy Kaberle Syndrome. Plays best and looks best when the rest of the team isn't.
I don't know if its a good or bad thing, but Kaberle did finally win a Cup.
@deedrag @Burtonboy @Cameron19 @Xxxxxnew Haha I was ready to win the cup this past season with a similar team that took the Bruins to 7 games plus Bernier and Clarkson.
How wrong I was, but it was fun to have such excitement. I'd be that pumped again if we had a new coach.
@DeclanK @BPsotka I just learned something.
3 weeks ago on Brendan Shanahan Addresses Depth, Not Core of Toronto Maple Leafs
@DeclanK This should be posted at the bottom of the article- then it doesn't go away.
@Burtonboy @BPsotka @T K O .... And if any of them outplay the previous list, we have trouble.
3 weeks, 1 day ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
@Burtonboy @BPsotka @T K O We have too many players to keep them all. If others look better in training camp, then they'll make the team.
@JMAC17 @BPsotka Thanks
@T K O @BPsotka T hen fuck this. Looks like we'll have another Colbourne situation?
Can anybody tell me which players are waiver exempt?
@Tim Horton @Greg Fenton A second overall is different than a 19th though, in terms of predicting a players' future.
3 weeks, 2 days ago on Monday Mashup: Gardiner’s Up Next
@Burtonboy @BPsotka @Jmessih @reenergized There seemed to be no rushing the net, from any players at all really under RC/ That was the biggest difference I noticed in Holland's play- I was really impressed during his first few games and then noticed about two weeks later that he didn't use his speed and body to get to the net.
I wonder if our coaches didn't think driving to the net with the puck gave as quality scoring chances? Perhaps they preferred more passes and a clear shot on goal.
3 weeks, 2 days ago on James Reimer Signs for 2 years, $2.3 million per season
@Jmessih @reenergized I also think Holland looked best when he first arrived, and then looked weaker and weaker as he played into Carlyle's systems.
@Mcost61 @wiski Phil can pass.

@Yaknowwhat Better than we played, not better than we could play.
If they had been coached well, our possession and shot clocks would have been better I feel.
Everybody has different numbers, I would say 40% roster decisions; 35% coaching systems; 15% individual effort/ desicion making.
1 month, 1 week ago on Steve Spott, Peter Horachek named Maple Leafs’ Assistant coaches
@Yaknowwhat Standings are what matters- but how do they determine what the issue was? They determine whether or not changes need to be made.
Coaching or roster wise.
@ShiftyD @dlb Mad @BPsotka But they're told not to battle the half-wall.
I understand they were uneffective; I just think good coaching makes us a good and wining team.
@dlb Mad Well I love how the hockey IQ test is how many times the coach has to go over a drill.
Basic logic I guess is all you use...
@Dewy Keon Hogturd @BPsotka Yet we harp on the media for their obscure assumptions...
@Dewy Keon Hogturd @BPsotka That's one example; just because a different coach was wrong doesn't mean this one is good. There's more than two ways to coach a team, and I think general consensus is Both RW and RC have made terrible mistakes.
You could even argue RC has been given the players RW should have had, and vice versa.
@dlb Mad @BPsotka Systems differ between coaches/ organizations.
By the way. Ours sucked.
@Dewy Keon Hogturd @BPsotka What history? When the coaches made different decisions and trusted unproven players? When we actually rolled four lines? When McClement was a 4C?
@dlb Mad @BPsotka They were asked to play the systems. You don't say to a player "go win the game". That's nuts. You tell them where to be, and the coaches told them to be swarming the D-zone, leaving the points free, and waiting at the blueline during a breakout.
That's on the coach.
@Dewy Keon Hogturd Honestly, I disagree. I think the players did what was asked while playing terrible systems with poorly divided ice time (/starts) and with questionable linemates. Raymond and Clarkson on the same line? One rushes and the other grinds and cycles. McClement on the ice while trailing in the third period? That's killing time for the opposition.
I understand making the players take responsibility, but I think we could have been successful under different coaches/ GM decisions; I think we would have had the same result under a different roster and the same coach/ GM decisions.
@Murph2417 Kessel hattrick in Anaheim or Reimer coming into the game with 10 minutes left to win it (Kings? in March?)
@TheCanucksnaphook @Jordan29 Was it Col's 1st and ROR for Gards?
@Komas Taberle @Yan28 Did he run the PK?
1 month, 1 week ago on Maple Leafs’ Assistant Coach announcement to come next week
@Jmessih @Burtonboy Shows off their skills more. That's the point in the scrimmage I'd guess.
@Burtonboy I bet he plays both at the same time.
@Burtonboy @Loric76 @The_Polish_Cannon "If you fall down a lot, you can be sent to the Marlies"
Toronto Maple Leafs @MapleLeafs 18s
.@Sportchek Player Alert: Leafs Sign Trevor Smith: http://bit.ly/1onJqTQ #TMLtalk #News #NHL #Leafs
@reenergized I would not do Kadri for Kane, let alone a downgrade in net.
@Yaknowwhat That's 10 goals. Tying and winning for each game.
@Bobsyouruncle Not if the Marlies have the same skill level they had last season. If there are lots of injuries to key players? Sure. Especially if there are lots of Marlies slotted in to make the team at that time.

@Tim Horton @BPsotka @BrandonCheema I've done much research on them, having been through a 5-month recovery of one a few years ago. I'd most definitely recommend a mouthguard.
Not scientifically proven is vastly different than scientifically unproven.
Research on concussions is very new and they still aren't great at identifying/ treating them. That is why they take so many precautions in hockey now - because we understand how little we know. If you hit your head on the ice and your jaws close, much of the energy is absorbed down the jaw bone and into the back of your head, where your brain is stored. Essentially the force it takes to stop your head from moving down is subjected, through vibration, into your brain.
I maintain absolute support of mouthguards.
@Tim Horton @BPsotka @BrandonCheema "However, their role in preventing or reducing the severity of concussions has not been scientifically proven."
Far from saying its a lie.
@Tim Horton @BPsotka @BrandonCheema Sarcasm?
@hoolihan @BPsotka I've got no idea what you're trying to argue about here.
@BrandonCheema The best thing is a mouth guard. No helmets are great in hockey yet really.
@hoolihan @BPsotka @Bruffins You've convinced me. I guess sell all defence except for Rielly and rebuild?
@Bruffins 3 top line wingers; 3 2nd line centers (if the hype is true about Kontiola); 7 third-line players; no skill-less players.
Love those forwards and am excited to see what the defense can accomplish, but I think the systems were more to blame last season than the personel.
@Yan28 @Cameron19 Depends on how the season plays out/ how each player performs I would guess.
