@Yak  That's what was happening over the course of the season....opposing coaches used this ability to manipulate Carlyle to their advantage.  The Leafs were for the most part reactionary in their play - rarely dictating the play or imposing their will on the opposition.  And I believe the end result(s) were the consequence of the style of play they were told to play.

I agree about what that would say about the core.  Having said that, I agree with Cam that Carlyle was more concerned about matchups than anything else.  Instead of running 4 lines with an aggressive "hard on the puck approach", he was trying to get his matchups.  When you have a matchup team, there are different messages to different players....and I think that is a losing style nowadays.

It's one thing to play this brand of hockey....it is quite another to translate that into W/L...odd thing to say I realize. But by any other measure BESIDES possession, this team is doing worse than before in GF, GA, and results (yes, very small sample size).

Need to see the style of play translate into the other numbers before I believe.  And even then, will this crew stick to the rewritten script, or go back to ad-libbing?

@Optimustic @BoneChompski @KhoreAchek (formerly 4th collapse) Am I missing something?  Small sample size admittedly, but since Horacheck took over, GAA is up, GF are down, and they've lost 2 out of 3.  In a business that is strictly results oriented, that is not good enough.  Haven't played any real powerhouses yet either....LA perhaps.

@Cameron19 @hometeem @Yaknowwhat Exactly....you play the match-up game to cover up for the flaws in your team.  IMO, the match-up game Carlyle was using created some of the issues we were seeing.

@Yaknowwhat  True.  But if your bosses boss has to go public to resort to motivating the players, it probably means Carlyle was a laughing stock in the room already anyway.

@Yaknowwhat Can't help but think that was the entire problem in a nutshell.  Those guys were playing 70% of the time in their own end....and what does Carlyle do?  Up their ice time to 20+ minutes every game.  Earlier in the year the ice time was divided more evenly.

2 weeks, 5 days ago on Sunday Mashup: On the road again

@Yaknowwhat Definitely not the ideal model you want to have, but it certainly beats the model that was in place prior to that.  I mean if Winnik can up the possession numbers on line 1, it means that Kessel is spending more time in the offensive zone, which could mean the same output but with significantly less chances and GA.

2 weeks, 5 days ago on Sunday Mashup: On the road again

Reply

@Yaknowwhat Panik has shown flashes of top 6 potential.....and Winnik looks like a fit on the Kessel line even if he doesn't/won't score 25 goals.  Sometimes you get additions by subtraction.....

@dlb, just dlb @newkb Which works for me if that is what we get most of the time.  I just don't see that as being worth 10%+ of the cap when they already have Phaneuf, Kessel, and Clarkson taking up close to 30% of the cap already.  In a different scenario, sure...count me in.

2 weeks, 5 days ago on Sunday Mashup: On the road again

@Cameron19 @Mitch92 Handle is a step up from Gardiner defensively, but a very small one.  Not what the Leafs need....at all.

2 weeks, 5 days ago on Sunday Mashup: On the road again

@dlb, just dlb I actually have not much faith in the Leafs to do any due diligence.  They are trying to sell merchandise, so that's how you end up with Clarksons on inflated, immovable contracts.  I'd take O'Rielly if we didn't have Clarkson......just not sold on ROR at all.
