@InsideThePark  Dunno about pitchers but when Andre is playing CF, a lot of balls hit the ground.

This may be the most fun White Sox fans have all year.  I'm happy for them.

If I were stuck at a job where I couldn't watch those three "well hit" singles, I think I'd want to kill myself.

Don: "We haven't made any decisions yet about CF, Joc has to win the job, blah blah."

Us: "Ahahahahahahaha!"

NICE!  I think, given that hit and Ethier's defense, we've seen enough to decide on the CF situation.

Since Hamilton is hurt, I wonder if anyone has tried yet to dump Ethier on the Angels.  Marvin can dream, no?

Mike, you're fighting a losing battle here with some people.

I had a friend insist on Facebook today that her mother had Googled some sinister phrase about crows, and Google replied with "Call [insert my friends name here] at work!"  And then magically, went back to returning normal results after that.  Then, all her friends jumped in the post with "OMG! That's so creepy!" and "Wow, I'd freak out!" and all kinds of comments like this.  Never mind that IT DID NOT HAPPEN and that either 1) her mother is smoking something, or 2) her mother is lying.  Nobody seemed to mention THOSE possibilities.

Yesterday, I had a parent at my son's martial arts school try to convince me Obama wanted to make the internet have different speeds for everyday families (you know, the OPPOSITE of his position) so that he could somehow get more money for his friends (no explanation for how he would make money with the alleged scam, or who would even GET the money).  He was very sincere in this belief.

I didn't bother to explain to the friend on Facebook that Google absolutely did not present a phantom message to her mother telling her to call her at work, nor did I try to explain Net neutrality to the misguided parent.  These people WANTED to believe those things, so no amount of logic would have mattered.

That said, some of us have learned a LOT from your site... so keep up the good fight, just don't let the closed minded frustrate you too much.  ;)

To be honest, the Adams signing (and the McCarthy and Anderson signings) are exactly the type of signings I like to see, so I'm really happy about this move.  What I like about these moves can explain precisely why I was high on Beckett last spring, and can also explain why I hated the Maholm move last year (some may recall my infamous freak-out).

Maholm had about zero chance to be really good for us in a surprising way, Beckett on the other hand had a chance to give us a top 3 caliber pitcher in the 5-spot, and ended up doing just that for half the year.  Signing guys like Maholm is what low budget teams do when they need an "innings eater" to survive the season, not what winners should do.

Getting a bunch of guys like Adams, Anderson, McCarthy is what smart teams do to give themselves some kind of chance of getting big performances in more unexpected places... like the 4 or 5 spots in the rotation.  Lots of words, so I expect very few of you to read this, and that's okay.  lol

Re: "However, a look deeper finds some causes for concern. Adams’ 7.0% swinging strike rate was the lowest of his career, even worse than his disastrous 2013 season."

Could that, or any other stats from 2014, be a product of a small sample size?  Not sure he pitched quite enough for us to be sure about anything with him at this point.  It will be a fun story to watch develop; I'm assuming if it doesn't work out, we'll cut ties quickly.

@Iron Man Returns  The FO insists it's not a strategy (getting guys with these histories) but I'm not so sure... guessing they have stats to show the optimal time to pick up guys coming off injuries.  If you can optimize when you pick these guys up (not too early in the process) you get higher ceiling guys on the cheap, which lets you stockpile like we've been doing, as opposed to getting say just one Miller type.

@MajorPuigBaseball @BlueMarvin (Not Freaking Out) @DBrim  Last year pretty much proved that spending big on relievers has no better success rate than not spending big on relievers.  Howell was a success, while League and Wilson were not.  33% success rate.  (Not counting Perez cause he was cheaper.)  I bet we do better than a 33% success rate with the guys we pick out of this pile, so yeah, this is the smart approach for relievers.

Also, re: this post... last year Kershaw was so bad in Spring, he actually had me starting to worry a bit.  Won't happen again.  As long as he's healthy, he can come out of spring with a 20.00 era and it won't phase me until he starts losing games in the regular season.  That said... some of these relievers we have probably need to show something in ST or they won't even make the team.  So spring performance clearly matters for guys battling for spots... not necessarily just raw stats, but what the player shows management looking to make decisions.

@MajorPuigBaseball @DBrim  Too bad we can't stash all the guys who don't make it out of ST onto minor league teams.

Wow, with Adams now, I officially have lost count of all our pitchers in camp.  Until the Times mentioned him for example, I had forgotten about Bolsinger completely.  Adams seems like a smart signing; anyone know why 2013 was so uncharacteristic for him?  Was he injured that year?  Cause other than that and his age, not a lot to dislike about him.
