@Jagr8 The great news for Leaf fans is that Chiarelli isn't afraid to trade young talent.

@totalrebuild @Claymish Teams that develop properly have players in the AHL for two seasons, during the second season players get around 20 NHL games. The hope at that point is that they are too valuable to the success of the team to send back down.
If we are truly going to rebuild and develop players than the following needs to happen.
Older forward prospects ( Leivo, McKegg, Carrick, Bailey) and defense prospects (Percy, Granberg, Loov) need NHL minutes to show us what they have to offer.
Bubble forwards (Holland, Panik, Frattin) and older defense prospects (Erixon, Brennan, MacWilliam) need to be put in a position to succeed.
Prospects from other organizations ready for the jump, should be plucked and given a real opportunity (ei. Max Friberg, Mark McNeill, Ty. Rattie) Why not give Paajarvi another shot at the NHL?
If we can trade for a package of Ritchie and Oleksiak from Dallas or Pulkkinen and Sproul from Detroit make it happen. Those prospects can play next year for us.
Finally, give Nylander, Brown, Leipsic 20 games.

Potential target on San Jose..... Chris Tierney, former London Knight.

@In it to Winnik @Claymish Exactly, I wouldn't do it, Philly did though.

Looking at the Lindros trade in 1992, the equivalent to get McDavid would be:
Kessel + retain $2 million per year ($14 million)
Phaneuf + retain $2 million per year ($14 million)
Our 1st pick 4th overall this year
Our 1st pick 2016
I'm sure the Leafs and Red Wings will revisit the Phaneuf trade after the playoffs. When they do I hope Athanasiou is part of the package coming our way.

@Luke_R @Claymish I don't know, I just noticed that....I must be special haha.

Jeff Blashill will be the coach of Detroit next year, I'm 100% certain. Babcock is cocky enough to believe he can turn around the Leafs and wants to be the highest paid coach.
Our management group can work great with Shanahan at the top Dubas and Babcock as assistants. I feel all coaches should have a say in who he wants to coach anyways, give him the coach and assistant GM tittle. $6 million per year.
I'll be putting my faith in the Leafs choosing between Strome and Marner if both are available after the Coyotes pick. Either will be great for us, both being Leaf fans with heart and talent.
Marner I do feel is the better overall talent of the two. The knock on his size I read is wrong now since he has grown a lot and is still growing. In addition he excelled at the Center position in the playoffs playing with less talent and in a pressure situation. He plays like our former #93 and yet is bigger and will be in a league where size doesn't matter as much as it did before. For those who forget, Gilmour posted back to back 100+ pt seasons when he was 29,30 years old.....Marner is our man!

The leafs should be smart and work with edmonton to fast track their rebuild. We can get some prospects we give them proven players...we also ensure we arent fighting with them next year for a top pick.
Trade them a goalie, Phanuef, and we will take Draisaitl, Nikitin (contract dump), & Pitts 1st pick
1 week, 1 day ago on Saturday Mashup: NHL Draft Lottery – Connor McDavid or Bust
We've had more than 50 years of bad luck, we have to finally get a break....come on Pat Quinn, you helped us that game we honoured you, help us again.....please.
The Leafs need to do what the LA Kings did......Phil and JVR need some education on nutrient more than anyone else on the team.

@Xxxxxnew I would have to change my religion.
2 weeks, 2 days ago on 2015 NHL Draft Rankings: Maple Leafs to draft fourth overall, pending lottery
Should the Leafs offer RFA Dougie Hamilton Over $5,046,585 to $6,728,781, for the young massive Toronto right handed D-man?
Is giving up a First-round, second-round and third-round choice way too much? Is it doable knowing we have assets to replace those draft picks?
Top Pairing of Reilly/ Hamilton for the next 10 years is a strong foundation to build upon.

Looking at Islander prospects and young players like Strome, it's fun to imagine what a trade involving Kessel would net us.
2 weeks, 4 days ago on Wednesday Mashup: Brendan Leipsic hat trick has Marlies within striking distance of playoff spot
Leafs picked 8th last year however according to February Draft Rankings they got the 3rd best pick.
3 weeks, 4 days ago on Leafs Notebook – April 1
@Hollandaise @Scooby64 With Booth and Lupul in our lineup that frees up 82 games due to injury for auditioning Marlies....I like it.
4 weeks, 1 day ago on Saturday Mashup: 3rd overall within reach, Cameranesi with 2-pt game in UMD regional semifinal win
If the Sens are looking for a goalie tonight we can lend them Reimer or Bernier....we will play the other.
@Ze_theLeafsFan @Claymish The one comparing him to Ekblad was an older article. He's also projected to go in the 2nd round not 84th by most sites.
1 month ago on Thursday Mashup: Bailey set to debut, Marlies within a point of playoffs, lottery date set
I really hope right handed D-man Rasmus Andersson drops from a mid 2nd rounder to our early 3rd pick
I completely disagree with people placing such high value on goaltending. Things have seemed to change in the NHL, unknown and or disregarded goalies mixed with back ups have shown equal if not better stats to teams so called starters..... Hammond, Talbot, Dubnyk, Mason, Hutchinson, Lack, etc all performing as good or better than their teams high paid starters.
Teams don't pay a premium for goalies anymore and they seem hard to trade. If a team wants to pay up for Bernier because they feel his ceiling is higher then i say SELLLLLLLLL.
Maybe broke ass Arizona would pay a premium to get out of Mike Smith's $5.6 million over the next 4 years. Maybe just maybe they would be willing to switch picks, and Bernier for Smith......Marner or Strome and Bernier plus saving money is much better to them than old overpaid Smith and Eichel.
@mr_hanie @Claymish Yes exactly, money is real and a real PROVEN Gretzky was traded basically for money.
1 month, 1 week ago on Game 72 – SJS 4, TOR 1 – An even worse start for Toronto
Riddle me this...if money talks and the Leafs have lots. If they need to spend to the cap in order to take advantage of the Horton affect. Finally, and if the Leafs are in a rebuild.
Now, Arizona is all in on Marner to play with his London Knights teammates Domi and Dvorak. If they win the draft lottery we could get their pick.
Arizona trades the 1st pick to the Toronto for our 4th (Marner), Bernier, Bozak, Kessel + half of his salary we retain. Arizona gets a Phil Kessel for many years at just $4 million, a good youngish goalie, and basically 2 solid lines.
Toronto basically gets a 23% shot at McDavid if the groundwork can be set up prior to the lottery.
If Edmonton doesn't win the lottery and pick 3rd......Does that 3rd pick, plus Nugent Hopkins,.....get them Malkin?
It's a win win for both teams, Pitts need cap relief, and a top prospect for Crosby to groom. Malkin and Hall would be insanely dominate.
@LoovTrain @Claymish I like your luck.
@MaxwellHowe @Claymish I agree, I just figured with Nugent Hopkins already there and draisaitl just drafted, they will go with Hanifin.
My test... do the draft simulator once even if you don't like the results.... nhllotterysimulator.com then predict your picks.
@Ron Tugnut @Claymish Cherry picked? I went back 5 years, lol.
@Jmessih Size? lol
@Dogger That's my point, defense is too hard to predict so don't waste a top 5 pick.
I really hope we don't draft a D-man...Hanifin or Provorov. They are so hard to predict future success and I feel it's a waste to use a top 10 pick little alone a top 5.
2010....3rd overall Gudbranson, drafted after was R.Johanson, Niederreiter, Skinner, Granlund. 10th overall McIlrath, drafted after was Schwartz, Tarasenko, Bjugstad, Kusnetsov, Coyle.
2011....4th overall Larsson, drafted after was Strome, Scheifele, Couturier. Then 9th Hamilton, 10th Brodin
2012....2nd overall Murray, drafted after was Galchenyk then 4th-10th all D-men.
2013....4th overall Jones, drafted after was Lindholm, Monahan. 7th overall Nurse, drafted after Hovat, Nichushkin, Domi.
Drafted in the top 5..Gudbranson, Larsson, Murray, Jones. Only one could be dominate......please Leafs, do not take a chance picking a defenseman in one of the deepest draft in years!!!!!
@sniperstar @Claymish So let's add last years #2 Sam Reinhart....is Strome or Marner a better pick than him?
1 month, 1 week ago on GDT: Game #73, Toronto Maple Leafs vs San Jose Sharks (7:30pm, TSN4)
I'm not convinced this years draft is any better than last years, minus the first two picks.
Who would you rather get to choose from in the 4/5 range
-Bennett/ Dal Colle or Strome/ Marner
@colino17 @Burn_the_Loov_Boats @Xxxxxnew Yes, but nothing is stopping them from having a very specific answer to stupid questions.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Deadline passes with core largely in tact
Well I'm signing off this place for awhile. I get the sense without trade talk there will be even more of the crap people are spewing on here today going forward.
Are some of you people really so unhappy with your lives that you need to knock on others to make your life worthwhile? It is pathetic, we feed this negative environment and the media just gives us what we want.
Toronto is a great city, one of the best in the world, the Maple Leafs are a historic sports franchise, it's the negativity that is killing it.
Perspective people....Did you know your ex isn't really that bad of a person, just like you are not that bad person she told her friends you are? Others bring out either the best or the worse of us, we all have been in those relationships. Sports are no different, our team dynamic is flawed, but doesn't mean our individual players are bad.
@Mattmark Simply because Deadline day is when teams add pieces, expiring contracts, etc, for a playoff run with their already "established" good team. Adding long term contracts involve trading long term contracts, which team in a playoff spot is willing to screw with their chemistry at the 11th hour....It's not a time to screw up your team chemistry.
OOOO Even better option for entry level contracts..... Every non playoff team gets to offer 1 Entry Level Contract before the Entry Draft. Then the 1st round will be seeding of lowest to highest pt total of playoff teams. Round 2 and onwords would just simply revert to worst to first 30th team to 1st.
Drafting for all sports is barbaric and go against labour laws. Imagine finishing up university and being told who you have to work for if you want to work in your field. Secondly, also being forced to move to another city or country if you want to ply your trade. Thirdly, being told the max you can be paid for the next number of years.
How about this system:
Each NHL team is permitted to sign 7 Entry Level Contract Placements.
These Placements are assigned a max contract based on where you finish in the standings 1-30.
If a young player wishes to sign with a top team then they will be doing so knowing they will have to do so at less income plus less opportunity since those teams are already established winning teams.
Top 10 players will choose which team they want to sign with based on salary, location and opportunity. If they want to take less pay to work for a team they love then that is their choice.
Unfortunately there wasn't enough movement for us to give some Marlie boys a shot going forward.
-Booth, Robidas and Smith need to be put on waivers and if unclaimed play in the AHL the rest of the way.
Call up some of the other prospects Carrick, Devane, Loov, MacWilliam and see if they are part of the future or not.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Maple Leafs trade Olli Jokinen to St. Louis for Joakim Lindstrom & conditional sixth round pick
This was like Christmas. Getting to pick one present to open Christmas Eve and opening the Clarkson trade...the best present.
@vinoa @Claymish I'm unimpressed with Holland's vision and passing ability. He is a shoot first player, so not the center for Kessel.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Pete Deboer on where it went wrong with David Clarkson
What do you guys think of Radko Gudas? He's basically a much younger Polak in my opinion. He is out for at least a month, maybe we can snag him from Tampa in a Polak deal.
@Hmmm @Claymish Ya it appears they don't work well together unfortunately....or is that a product of Kessel knowning if they don't work well then he gets to play with Bozie...all the more reason he needs to go.
@LeafLife No, the way I understand it in basic terms is we would need to be tight to or over the cap to start the year to take advantage of the LTIR. If we are only at 65 million with Horton factored then there is no advantage at all.....obviously management is still planning on spending to the cap next year.
My most urgent to trade is Bozak, so long as he is here he will always default to the #1 spot preventing opportunity for others. Secondly, Phaneuf simply because I did say the captain has to go down with the ship. As far as everyone else, well we have until this time next year to maximize our return.
@vinoa @Claymish @Nylanderthal @17Forever @Dan39 Well it's not just us fans on here, it's the media saying the same shit. I'm no mathematician but with 30 teams in the league and Dion being named in the top 30 means he is a #1 D-man.
@Nylanderthal @17Forever @Claymish @Dan39 Okay Nylandethal...list 20 d-men every team would rather than Phaneuf...bet you can't.
@17Forever @Dan39 That is ridiculous! Phaneuf has to go yes, the captain must go down with the ship. However he has huge value and we don't need 'favours' to trade him. Most people can't name 30 D-men they would rather have on their team more than him. 100% of people can't name 60 D-men better than Phaneuf...he is for sure a top 2 guy. Add to that, how many D-men can be named that have somewhat of an all around game? 10?
