Loving the sarcasm about how EXPENSIVE train travel is. At least, assuming it's sarcasm. One of my big frustrations is when every once in a while I'll have someone say, "Well, Amtrak can't stay in business without help from the government." The government support for Amtrak is VERY small. What's more, pretty much every major airline in this country has, at one time or another, stayed in business only because of BILLIONS thrown into it by the federal government. Yes, train travel gets subsidies. So does air travel.

Got a family sleeper on our last trip on the way back. We usually just go coach but it was SOOOO great to have that space to lay down, but as others have said to have access to the lounge car and to interact as much as we please. We've had such great conversations and visits with people we've met on Amtrak. Most flights I've taken, people are just trying to ignore everyone and everyone is so uncomfortable. The most spacious first class flight seating still does not offer the comfort and flexibility of Amtrak.
Sure, it takes longer (everyone says that to me). But when you live a couple hours from the airport, and then you factor in arriving over an hour early, and then usually a lay-over for a decent amount of time, you are losing most of the day with travel either way. How much better to spend your travel day with decent, affordable food, great conversations, the freedom to access and bring along with you as much as you want to, pretty much, and getting to see the country?
