Well...being selfish...I don't want Spott taking over halfway thru the season and taking the Leafs out of a lottery pick if that is where they are when the decision to fire Carlyle comes along.
I think it is better to bring Spott in the off-season next spring and let him start fresh instead of halfway thru the season.
2 weeks, 4 days ago on Maple Leafs’ Assistant Coach announcement to come next week
I like the idea of keeping Spott as head coach with Marlies as he is the best coach right now to develop those young players. He will be the best replacement when the time comes to fire Carlyle.
I feel that the best thing is to have the two Marlies assistants get promoted to Randy. Then if the team falters early on, hang on to Randy till the end of the season so you can stay in the McDavid/Eichel race (or top-10 pick territory).
Then fire Randy after the season and promote Steve Spott to head coach as he will have a much better handle on the current Marlies on the Leafs roster and the potential Marlies who will be part of the Leafs in '15-16 season.
I know this is not the plan from Management, but I hope this is how it plays out....
What second rounder? We don't have one for next year to offer.

I am fine with the moves today but I hope it unintentially gets us into a lottery position next season. After watching the draft and being envious of the players the top-5 teams drafted (I do luv the NYlander pick BTW), how can you not want to get into the McDavid-Eichel race?

IF Tor only had a 2nd!! LOL
With Montoya gone....I would like to think Wng will re-visit trading for Reimer and up the ante.

Does anyone know when the rookie summer camp starts? It is usually a few days or a week following the draft.
@Wilbur @Anthony Petrielli
I noticed Dreger mentioning Tor talking with Buff a lot during the draft. They have 3 second rounders. I am sure Nonis was inquiring about the price to grab one of those latter second rounders.
Remember, Nonis traded a second rounder last yr for Bolland and he may walk with nothing to show for that trade.
1 month ago on William Nylander Drafted 8th Overall by the Maple Leafs
Garth Snow just swore LOL
Damn. Was hoping Sabres and Leafs had something going.
Notice Doug Wilson did not congratulate Kings on winning the Cup? Had something to do with blowing a 3-0 series lead.
Again McKenzie nailed this pick
To have Nylander develop right away in the AHL with Steve Spott is a dream scenerio
1 month ago on 2014 NHL Draft News & Notes
Wow. To have him develop right away in the AHL with Steve SPott is a dream scenerio.
Leafs picked the top centre available and lucky to get Nylander. COuld have easily went to Van.
I think the fact Ritchie has fallen past ninth makes the Nylander pick even more tantilizing
Taking a page out of the Red Wings drafting propensity
We needed to get a top centre and many might say Nylander is a steal at 8
I CALLED It!
if Fleury goes next, better be Ehlers or Ritchie. I say pass on Nylander
i think Car takes Fleury...then things really gets interesting for Leafs...
awesome. Ritchie, Ehlers or Nylander for Leafs!
Have to admit...excited to see who we will get at 8. Good to know it should be a highly skilled offensive forward.
@4evrblue @daniel marois @Zep2
Well...something would have to give there because how do you squeeze Bozak, Gganer, Kadri and Holland in the lineup when Gagner and Kadri battling for second line centre duty. I suspect Leafs are hoping Holland can nail the third-line center position in this scenerio.
1 month ago on (Draft Day Mashup) The Day Has Arrived
That does make sense. Why bring Dion and add another $7 mil when you just signed a d-man for $4.5. Unless Oilers moving out a big salary player like Sam Gagner.
@Kouba @daniel marois @4evrblue
Virtanen is interesting but he is the one in a lot of mocks who happened to fall outside top-10 but mocks don't mean a whole lot. I suspect if he is available that means perhaps Ritchie and Ehlers would have been already picked ahead. It's hard to pass on someone on the verge of a 50-goal campaign who scouts bill as maybe the best skater in the draft. And he had a hell of a showing at the World U-18 tourney.
I think moving up in the draft this year makes more sense given the talent available. If Leafs are sitting at #8 pick next year no way they move up into a top-3 scenerio with McDavid and Eichel available. Teams won't be trade first rounders so easily with that type of star talent on the table.
Not my proposal - give credit to some guy who bills himself as "Hockey Insiderr" LOL. Who is your pick for the Leafs at 8? Do you want them to move up into a top-3 pick?
Yup. Something more would need to be added. Like that crazy rumour that the Leafs are sending Phaneuf and Kadri with #8 to Florida for #1 and Kulikov. That trade WON'T happen - but at least someone else is coming back other than a draft pick.
If Tor gets in the 3 spot - I think it is after Florida picks Ekblad and Sabres take Reinhart. Then Tor guaranteed Bennett if they then trade up into number three slot. That's how I see it going down if both Oilers and Leafs agree to the deal.
1 month ago on (Thursday Mashup) Maple Leafs considering Tony Granato as potential assistant coach, Dave Nonis meets with media ahead of draft
That might be the most realistic pick the Leafs could move up to.
I think NoNo and Shanny know Leafs fans restless since April and deserve something to talk about following the draft. An no, I don't mean just discussing who they pick at 8. Something more juicier - but doubt that even comes close to happening.
Funny how a team like NYR feel on top of the world when they advance to Cup Finals but when series is over - they feel rotten and a team like Florida is the talk of the town, in the driver seat and the envy of most teams by draft time.
I hope they can somehow convince Edm or Isles to move down. Getting Bennett or Dal Colle would be tremendous. I think those teams are the only realistic trading partners. Florida's trade demands are just too rich for anyone.
Was reading Adam Proteau's piece in The Hockey News today and made the case of moving up in the draft to pick a top centre. They can't trade for one and don't have one in their system.
Best chance to do so is draft one. And they won't get it by picking eighth....
If the top-5 picks go without any trade movement, I highly doubt one of Van, Car or Tor trading down when their efforts to trade up go all for not. I do feel Leafs stay at 8. These rumouored trade proposals to move up are just too unbelievable.
@ingy56 @Bon Scott was a Leaf fan @daniel marois
Absolutely. He burned that first rounder way too early and paid the price a year later when the Leafs were falling down the standings and battling Quebec for last place in the league.
Heard a great story by Gord Stellick on HNIC radio today. Talked about when he was part of the Leafs management for the 1987 draft with the #7-overall pick led by then GM Gerry McNamara. Leafs brass wanted to pick Luke Richardson but scout Floyd Smith was pleading to pick Joe Sakic. Stellick said the talks got heated between Smith and McNamara right up until the Leafs picked.
Smith was hoping Richardson would be taken by one of the first six picks so he could make the case to take Sakic. We know how this played out.
Although Quebec would eventually pick Sakic at #15, Stellick mentioned that Quebec in fact had two first round picks that year and interestingly took Bryan Fogerty with the 9th-overall pick before taking Sakic six picks later. And as Stellick also pointed out was of course, 7 other teams that passed on Sakic after the Leafs picked.
Stellick said then coach John Brophy wanted more toughness on the backend and heavily favoured Richardson despite what some other scouts recommended and Brophy was a favourite of owner Harold Ballard so his final word had more weight than anyone associated with the scouting staff or even McNamara himself.
A great tale by Stellick as a reminder of not just how the Leafs missed out on great picks but other teams as well. But still no excuse for how they prepared for that draft, Much like that one in '89 when they sent one scout to Belleville and he recommended all Bulls players with their THREE first rounders that year!
@Reether @ProfessorRance @daniel marois
Would take more than our first rounder to land either one of those players. No doubt Col or Wng would demand Reilly be part of any deal. In that case, no deal from Nonis' perspective.
1 month ago on (Monday Mashup) Schedule Released
Hopefully they are dumb enough to trade their first rounder to the Leafs...
@ProfessorRance @daniel marois
If it's a good YOUNG player then yes, I would trade the pick. As always, depends on who is coming back.
Interesting points Elliotte Friedman had in his recent 30 Thoughts about the Leafs:
7. Islanders GM Garth Snow is on record telling Newsday's Arthur Staple that he will give up the fifth selection for a player who can help them win now. Other teams are more in "stealth mode," and one is definitely Toronto. Dave Nonis is like a baseball GM, throwing 25 players on the waiver wire to hide the one he really wants to move.
8. There is no doubt he is testing the market on a significant portion of his roster. I don't think Toronto will make a deal just for the sake of it, but the Leafs are looking to add depth up front and re-arrange the blue-line. Teams asking about Morgan Rielly are being laughed out of existence. I also don't think Jonathan Bernier and Phil Kessel are available, either. They get asked a lot about Jake Gardiner and James van Riemsdyk, but are you willing to make an offer that doesn't allow Toronto to say no?
9. Nonis was not available to comment, but he has always maintained he will only trade youth for youth. Or, if we're talking about a more veteran player, someone with term who can still help. Toronto will consider moving up, but would the Maple Leafs consider dropping out of the first round entirely if they got a significant asset?
Don't forget Dimitri Mirinov ;)

According to TSN:
Willie Desjardins will be meeting with the Canucks in Vancouver this weekend and according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the team will introduce him as their new head coach next week assuming all goes as expected in the hiring process.
So does that mean when Desjardins lists his three references for Canucks HR to verify and if they don't check out, do the Canucks hire Ron Wilson???? ;)
I was listening to Kevin McGran from the TO Star this morning on XM radio's Hockey This Morning. He seems to think the Leafs real target is Sam Bennett. But, the only way I see them having a shot is trading for the #3 pick as Buffalo and Florida will demand a king's ransom for either pick 1 or 2. Edm seems like a more realistic trading partner or perhaps the Isles at the #5 slot.
If the top 4 centres are gone by the time the Leafs pick at #8, I seriously hope Ehlers is available. I say that would be a homerun pick at 8.
