Yup.  More 3-point games from teams below us will go a long way to help our lottery pick.  Plus, losing to Buff in regulation on Tuesday won't hurt ;)

Yes. Teams will want to compete with the CHI, LA , MTL and ANA teams of the league. They might pay a heavy price for Toronto players at the deadline just to bolster themselves.

Can't believe I am already monitoring the bottom of the standings so closely...Winnipeg plays Colorado today.  If Col wins, they pass TO in the standings and push them further into a bottom 5 spot.  If Win wins in OT or shootout, they move within a point of TO and COL ties TO in the standings and still pushes TO down a spot.

Nice...

Yes but teams that will be buying at the trade deadline won't be in top-10 draft spots.  This draft is two rounds deep.  So getting first rounders in the 18-29 range in the first round is excellent assets to stockpile on.

Even if the Leafs want to sell Kessel, Phaneuf, Lupul, Kadri right this second...teams like Buffalo, Carolina, Winnipeg, Florida or Edmonton are NOT going to be lining up to trade away their firat rounders when they are sitting in top-10 positions right now.

Regardless of trade value, I don't think they consider trading signifcant players until after Xmas.  Remember, teams are still willing to pay a premium at the trade deadline.  Look at the first and second rounders Buffalo was able to grab for players like Miller, Gaustad and Moulson the past 2 years at the deadline.

I think what is interesting in bringing Dubas (a former OHL GM who has had first hand experience watching McDavid and Strome in the junior ranks) and then assistant GM Brendan Prindham who was previously the Director of Amateur Scouting for the NHL (and would have scouted McDavid for the 2015 Draft just prior to coming to the Leafs) and now hiring Mark Hunter who would have also watched McDavid/Strome, etc in the OHL and of course helped coach a former generational talent in John Tavares.

I believe we will soon see the Leafs take the direction to bottom out.  Just keep Carlyle behind the bench and leave the roster as is.  They will continue to self destruct right down the bottom of the standings.

Let's hope when Eric Stall comes back this week it will spark the 'Canes on a mini run.  Even if we can't compete with Canes/Sabres for McDavid, we can still finish near bottom 3 and get a chance on Eichel or Dylan Strome.  Very nice conselation prizes after McDavid.  Strome is just in full beast mode right now and will be an excellent centre to build a franchise around.

Yup.  That was the core Burke was banking on when he acquired both in the same season 5 yrs ago. Now...we wait for the hammer to come down.  Time to see this team for what it is and not a moment too soon.  Here is the real chance for TO to finally bottom out and net the superstar in the draft that has eluded them for several decades.

But, we need to keep this lineup in tact for the next 25-30 games to ensure we slide enough in the standings before we start moving out key players.

That draft breakdown vs. trades between how Det is built vs. Tor reflects how horribly we have drafted overall.  You can't build a team just thru trades.

Hmmm.  I think a certain date in June when the Leafs head up to the podium to announce their draft selection will ease all the season-long suffering.  Just ask Isles fans how they are feeling this morning.  Funny thing is, their first rounders like Tavares, Okposo, Nelson and Strome up front are certainly making a bigger impact then the Oilers high-picks of Hall, RNH, Yakupov, etc.  Plus, it's nice when you get the first-overall pick and can select a franchise player like Tavares.

Ten is no good.  That is the territory we have been in the past few years. We need to aim for a top-5 pick.

Ha! I just don't want us to miss out on the top-end talent beyond McDavid.  Tired of seeing the Florida, Isles, Colorados, getting these top-end guys from the draft and we continue to miss out. Nylander and Reilly are a good start.  But let's aim for the talent who can be a STAR in the NHL.

McDavid, Eichel, Barzal, Zacha, Strome, Sproung....there is a lot of top end talent beyond McDavid.

I know no one here will support this but I WANT either McDavid/Eichel here.  They will not solve the current problems on the team right away - but at least we can build around a new core instead of the existing ones here.

It's like trying to continually squeeze a square peg in a round hole for the past three-four years and it's not working.  The only formula to get in the McDavid/Eichel sweepstakes is to drop in the standings so yes - I will root for them to lose in regulation time every time.  This is just like last year when people here said losing is stupid yet when we get to the draft every year we don't have a high pick because we didn't bottom out enough.

Here is our chance.  We CAN compete with Carolina-Buffalo, etc for a lottery pick.  Just keep the roster as is and don't add that Martin Gerber element to screw things up.

I am lovin' the race for McDavid...you look at Crosby handle the puck and Leafs have no centre with that talent.  Imagine McDavid making those hard passes to Connor Brown next year.

Noticed Stephane Quintal has been named Vice President of Player Safety.  Looks like Claude "The Clown" Loiselle could not nail that job as he was rumoured as the successor to Shanahan's post at the NHL head office.

Glad to see people realized that Loiselle was a loser based on his track record with the Leafs.

Well...being selfish...I don't want Spott taking over halfway thru the season and taking the Leafs out of a lottery pick if that is where they are when the decision to fire Carlyle comes along.

I think it is better to bring Spott in the off-season next spring and let him start fresh instead of halfway thru the season.

I like the idea of keeping Spott as head coach with Marlies as he is the best coach right now to develop those young players.  He will be the best replacement when the time comes to fire Carlyle.

I feel that the best thing is to have the two Marlies assistants get promoted to Randy.  Then if the team falters early on, hang on to Randy till the end of the season so you can stay in the McDavid/Eichel race (or top-10 pick territory).

Then fire Randy after the season and promote Steve Spott to head coach as he will have a much better handle on the current Marlies on the Leafs roster and the potential Marlies who will be part of the Leafs in '15-16 season.

I know this is not the plan from Management, but I hope this is how it plays out....

I am fine with the moves today but I hope it unintentially gets us into a lottery position next season.  After watching the draft and being envious of the players the top-5 teams drafted (I do luv the NYlander pick BTW), how can you not want to get into the McDavid-Eichel race?

I noticed Dreger mentioning Tor talking with Buff a lot during the draft.  They have 3 second rounders.  I am sure Nonis was inquiring about the price to grab one of those latter second rounders.

Remember, Nonis traded a second rounder last yr for Bolland and he may walk with nothing to show for that trade.

Well...something would have to give there because how do you squeeze Bozak, Gganer, Kadri and Holland in the lineup when Gagner and Kadri battling for second line centre duty.  I suspect Leafs are hoping Holland can nail the third-line center position in this scenerio.
