@Hmmm @Coldincowtown @Bruffins @djamon I have been really impressed with Hartley since he arrived. He is extremely positive with his team and I am sure they like playing for him. My guess is Calgary re-signs him before the year is out.

@Hmmm @Bruffins @djamon having the benefit of seeing big Joe often here in Calgary I would say the biggest difference is he immediately got big minutes when he arrived in Calgary and gained confidence. He has added 10 plus pounds this year and keeps improving. and of course, Hartley dances circles around RC in coaching young players.
Nice write up Alec. Very thorough and spot on. I am looking for ways to critique, but full props. You're a pro.

@MikeGartner11 @Coldincowtown @Cameron19 I don't know, but I sure would like to see what his game looks like if he was in Stamkos shape. Give me one season of slim Phil and if he performs the same or worse, fine, i'd alter my view. He will find it gets harder to maintain elite speed from here on in as things change when you hit your late 20's.
1 week, 3 days ago on Game Review: Game #2, Pittsburgh Penguins 5 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs 2
@Doit4Dougie @Coldincowtown My hope i guess is that a terrific coach could bring that out in a guy like Phil. RC is not that guy, one of many problems currently. Sigh, I am so pissed off with this organization.
@MikeGartner11 @Cameron19 @Coldincowtown i don't feel "lucky", sorry. If Phil committed to training the way elite players like Stamkos and Crosby do he would score 60 goals. We accept mediocrity too easily. Waste of incredible skill. I don't buy the fat body type argument. I train with plenty of people who said that and then once they get nutrition advice and some discipline, their fat quickly melts away.
Let me ask everyone this question: If you are building an organization and you want two or three skill guys to set the best example as leaders, do you start with a guy that blows off summer training, looks absolutely fat in commercials for media (have you seen phat phil in those SN commercials) baits the media about the training comments and tells them to relax, or do you want a guy with incredible skill (which Phil has) who trains as hard or harder than the best players in the league and makes a statement like "i am in the best shape of my life and plan to lead this team to the top". Phil is coddled by mgmt, it is embarrassing that he is wasting exceptional talent in his prime. What is more embarrassing is mgmt.'s acceptance. Leaders set the tone for the team, period. Something smells in leaf land.
Afternoon folks, have not posted in a while but have been lurking. Not sure how to read the mood yet, but personally I have very low expectations this year after being quite excited the past few seasons. Feels like a transition year with Shanahan assessing the organization. I will say after game one that the top two forward lines continue to have very little clue how to play in their own zone and no change to bottom six or defensive core will change the overall momentum of this team until Bozak and Kadri lines commit to winning puck battles on the boards in our zone and actually moving puck out of our own zone effectively. I fear a same old season is in store, with these symptoms firmly intact from last year.

@.JVR. If Mike Richards can be a fourth liner, I think I would be ok with Bozak there some day. Sure would be nice to have that kind of problem. Dare to dream.
3 months, 3 weeks ago on Maple Leafs submit an offer to David Legwand
@mr_hanie @Coldincowtown Yes, we did have that, he is now building a great team in Calgary. sigh.
@ConnorCrisp haha, yes, that would change my opinion, but even Garth Snow isn't that dumb, so Nonis should be ok.
Cap space = flexibility. We still may see a large trade for a veteran centre with a large contract (Staal, Thornton)?? maybe not. in either case, Phaneuf and Clarkson contracts look much much better now than a week ago. i don't like or dislike Nonis, but i do think he is smarter than most give him credit for.
@Cameron19 I think it is just a sign of their demise/rebuild. The key guys want to join teams that are close to winning duo or they run for huge money and term, neither of which is a fit with Detroit.
So, just checking in. Are we all now pissed at Nonis for having too much cap space? lol, just kidding, kinda.
@Cameron19 @Yaknowwhat Your last sentence is bang on IMO.
3 months, 3 weeks ago on Draft Day Two Wrap Up: Gunnarsson for Polak, offensive focus to Leafs’ draftees
@TheCanucksnaphook With Monahan and now Bennett in Cowtown, Colborne is quickly falling down the depth chart. Bet they keep him on the wing from now on. It will be fun watching Calgary with these guys up the middle. Was hoping T.O. somehow found a way to get Bennett but very happy Calgary got him instead of any team other than Leafs.

@Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs @wiski Born and raised in Calgary. The best kind of swede possible!
3 months, 3 weeks ago on Maple Leafs select John Piccinich 103rd overall
@Mattmark @lukethenuke @Coldincowtown You are hilarious, ever consider comedy.
@Mattmark @Cameron19 @Coldincowtown I'm not minimizing the pick, just saying we do not know what else STL had on the table and if we really wanted Polak that was probably the difference. In any case, you both missed my point, will we really miss gunnar. Get off the cliff, everything is fine.
I am surprised at all the Gunnar trade hand wringing. Do we really think we will even notice he is gone. Clearly Gardiner/Reilly are moving up the LD depth chart. I am happy to see a defensive minded tough RD man come back our way. As for the 4th round pick, meh, STL must have had some other offers that were comparable, but we will never know on that front. We need tougher D and tougher forwards. Step one of a few others I hope.
@DWCMLHS Isn't Broll watching from the press box in Marlies playoffs? How can we expect him to make the big club if he isn't currently playing any role with the little club?
5 months, 1 week ago on Leo Komarov set to return to the NHL
Wow, so the merry-go-round as a Leaf fan continues. I could see Phaneuf for ROR and us trading Kessel with Shanahan starting his re-tool by trying to reset with elite youth and different personalities. I don't hate Phaneuf nor do I think his contract is outrageous. A bit high yes, but he would have got at least 6mm as UFA and potentially $7mm. ROR has a big contract as well and AVs need help on D. I was thinking perhaps we offer up Kessel to Florida and use the pick to draft Eklbad, but I can't see them doing that deal as they need a young D to balance a strong forward group. Hard to know how this all plays out. The big difference now versus 5 years ago is we actually have some good talent to use as trade bait if a shake up is required. Something is missing from our current squad for sure.
5 months, 1 week ago on Carlyle Returns
@Cameron19 @Coldincowtown OK, i like the way those four teams play in the regular season as well. Coaching is part of our problem, but we took a step backwards on personnel as well this year. We seemed to have lost intensity to our game with departure of Grabbo, Macarthur and Komorov. Addition of Raymond, Clarkson, Bolland/Holland didn't work. I do blame part of that on coaching, part on personnel. Defense, fourth line etc, could go on and on. My main point in any case, was, we should compare ourselves to the elite teams that perform well in regular season AND playoffs as they are the benchmark.
5 months, 2 weeks ago on Decision on Randy Carlyle coming soon
@Burtonboy @4evrblue Fair point and LA definitely plays that way. When you look at their team though, the puck possession is driven by the forwards as their D has a few mobile guys (Doughty, Voynov) and the balance is big, strong with modest puck moving skills. Their forwards grind the crap out of opposition and are relentless on the back check. Man I want our team to be built and play like that!
The more I watch the quality teams in the playoffs (LA, Boston, Anaheim, Chicago), the more evident it becomes that we have a personnel issue. In short, we need bigger forwards and we need some defencemen who are physical. This team went soft, soft, soft when it counted. I don't think this is a major personnel overhaul, rather tweaking of 4 or 5 players. It is quite possible there are a few rats in the room that have a "me" versus "we" attitude. Shanahan will sort that crap out in a hurry. I actually have tremendous faith in Shanahan and Leiweke. I have been around long enough to watch many Leaf management fiasco's and I am in the business of investing in management teams that fix problem companies, so on this front i actually feel qualified to offer an opinion. These guys are different than past appointments and have the pedigree to fix this stinky mess. I look forward to seeing what transpires.
@Cameron19 @Belfour20/JB-45 meh, I enjoy Belfour20's off the cuff sarcasm.
We have all earned the right to take the odd cheap shot at the Blue and White. We are obviously still fans since we are still hear avidly following the Marlies.

6 months, 3 weeks ago on Game Review: Game #77, Maple Leafs 3 vs. Flames 2
My roster moves this summer:
Sign Bolland if he still wants to play here. Sign Statsny. Find a stay at home D man please (not sure who).
Use Reimer, Kadri, Franson and Lupul to upgrade D and add a top six forward with some grit.
Say bye bye to snow storm Raymond. Bring back Komorov.
That is all, oh, unless we can also find a new coach to replace RC. I want a defensive minded coach like Tippett please. No more run and gun. We need a coach who has the balls to tell Kessel to stop with the never ending giveaways and poor point man coverage and not be afraid to bench him and any other player if they don't play strong D. Too many soft players on this team.
Played in a Flames charity poker tourney last month and got to speak with Burke as he was there. He is a beauty, totally classy about his time with Leafs, has plenty of nice things to say about Nonis. A pro, and he likes to toss back the beers, tops in my book.
6 months, 3 weeks ago on Brian Burke shares thoughts on current Leafs
@lukethenuke @LeafsForLife Wrong, there were many people totally saying that after SJ loss. A bunch of crap was flying. Happy from Reims. He is a quality pro.

@Leafs rule I remember when we thought 80 points was a respectable season. I like the view much better now.
@.JVR. @Coldincowtown We will be ok. Two days to rest, and it is still a road trip so the boys will be sharing laughs about their Saturday night in the nations capital. We will get three points in our next two for a very solid road trip.
i called the Reimer shut out! Of course, I did call it against SJ, but hey, my timing was just off. I am so pumped right now. Great road trip in death valley. Only second team all year to get 4 points. we are for real my friends.
@.JVR. Wow...booo.... and wow. Best nostalgic avatar with a nice save on new handle, but seriously JVR, we love you but you may need prozak!! lol.
Alec, my apologies up front, but for all you fuckers who shit on Reimer, go cook a sock. He may not be our number one, but he is a player on my team any day of the week. What a battler. The douche bag who was trolling him last night can go suck it.
@Komas Taberle @Coldincowtown @skiingallday @Welder24 Really, I find that hard to believe.
7 months, 2 weeks ago on Shark Club Game Day: Game #67, Maple Leafs at Sharks
@Komas Taberle @skiingallday @Welder24 Clarke is a douche if he said that, he looks good in a Sens uniform.
I have a man crush on Gleason and proud to admit it.
@Belfour20 IDK, if u watch replay, JVR pushed Marleau out of the way just as P9 committed.
@CanuckUKinToronto @Coldincowtown Like him or not, we will need Reimer playing well for us down the stretch as well. Many back to back games coming, so i think Reims will see the net a half dozen games and we need him to help us a win a few of those. Tonight was ugly, but I don't blame Reimer. We stunk. Time to move on.
The good thing is with Reimer getting about 70 shots tonight, he should be better going forward,
JVR coming back, P9 lives to see another day!
@Welder24 @Chris Jay Troll troll troll your boat, gently down the stream..... back to PPP for u bud. You are not welcome here.
@Welder24 @Coldincowtown Uh huh, ok thx for the insight.
Uuugggh, and that may be P9's worst play of the season. Not intentional obviously but wtf.
Feel bad for Reimer. Hasn't played and gets a tremendous team on a back to back when we look awful. Reims style definitely forces D to play puck more as he is not as strong on puck control even when he has played a ton. That is the big difference between him and Bernier as Bernier is just a cool cat under pressure. Regardless, bank this one and move on to LA. Need a rebound game. Can't believe how Clarkson is over playing his position role, he looks like a completely different player since arriving in T.O. I am a Clarkson fan, I hope he can turn it around but man, he should watch some video of his games in NJ.
Sweet win to start our road trip. Reimer shutout tomorrow followed by Bernier revenge against Kings. Three and oh in death valley.
