@Marlies Man @Coldincowtown I guess, but man, we are so lacking in elite young talent, we could use any one of them.

Marner, Strome, Hanifan. All going to be great players and I would be happy with any one of them if we somehow fail to win lotto. This whole debate is like having three great sports cars in your garage and picking which one to drive. It is a good year to be bad, period.

Wow, this Jets-Hawks game is a barn burner. Jets are a handful, hard to imagine them missing playoffs. If they get in they are going to be a handful for whoever they draw.

@Yaknowwhat @Hollandaise  @Joe_17 I blame Burke. He brought in the island of misfit toys. Nonis got stuck having to figure out what to do with them, all the while still thinking the core might not be rotten. Everything is now clear, so time to deal. P9 and PK will still fetch good returns, better than we would have got if we didn't resign them, but instead dealt them at the deadline last year.

This is why 4th spot wins the draft:

Fact - top ten picks have a 91.5% of winning lottery, meaning a top ten pick will win lottery

Fact - of the top ten picks, top three have slightly less than 50% chance of winning lottery (45/91.5), meaning position 4 through 10 will win lottery;

Fact - fourth pick has best odds in 4 through 10, therefore, finish 4th and McDavid is ours.

Yes, I love stats and my new avatar will soon read CIC97

My view on the core. We need to seriously evaluate players personality for this market. If you are in the top five core group, in addition to elite talent, you need to be able to embrace the media frenzy and have a personality. Kessel and Phaneuf do not, Kadri, Rielly do. Build around those guys. Supporting cast is less relevant on media front as nobody pays attention to them. Our two most expensive guys are absolute least capable of dealing with the frenzy. Hit restart.

@vinoa @zoidbergman Kadri is the least of our problems IMO. He is one of the few guys who likes the spotlight and can handle media. I think you will see a much improved Kadri next year. I think he is a very good 2C. If we get McD or Strome, we are in good shape down the middle. A guy worth looking at next year is Backlund. very solid two way C, I don't think he resigns in Calgary as there may be no room for him with Bennett coming up and depth of centres in Cowtown.

Strome/ Mcjesus, Kadri, Backlund, Holland/Gauthier.

@Yan28 I disagree. This is the first time all season he has been given quality minutes and semi decent line mates. I would resign Booth on a one or two year deal at $1.5mm. We are going to need some veteran forwards with size through this mess.

So, I was at the game last night. Amazing how many leaf jersey were still worn and none thrown. Calgary was out for the kill immediately. Booth and Kozun were the only two leafs who looked like they wanted to compete. Putting Brennan and MacW out there together against Monahan's line was death, compounded by Bozak and phil. In any event, no contest. I have been to most Leaf-Flames games when they are in town and this was the first where I had no problem cheering for flames. Must admit I feel a bit dirty today, but mission accomplished.

I see Naz as a solid 2C for us for many years ahead, assuming we get our 1C in this year's draft. It is interesting that Shanny is bringing out the tough love 2 days after first healthy scratch notice. Something must have happened in between that set him off and he is now sending a strong message. Nothing wrong with that.

@MaxwellHowe @AlbertaMapleLeaf @Coldincowtown  your summary is correct. If the above is 2015 then it is pretty straightforward. Still, Nashville needs to drop from division lead and crap out in first round. That will get us a decent pick.

@MaxwellHowe @Coldincowtown @AlbertaMapleLeaf  Yes, sorry, Alec's inserted post. If these are actually the 2015 rules then I completely agree. Despite the legalese these are pretty straightforward. Are we sure these are this years as I know I read some rules that were different.

Reply

@AlbertaMapleLeaf @Coldincowtown  yes, I think that is correct. Key is for Nashville to drop in standings, not win their division and get bounced in first round. All very possible. That would yield us a pretty good pick.

I noticed some chatter the last few days about our Nashville draft pick and where we might pick if they get bounced early. While the rules are less than clear, here is my conclusion:

Stanley cup winner drafts 30th, loser in cup final drafts 29th. Division winners draft 25th to 28th unless they are included above. Balance of draft works in inverse order of elimination, based on how far you go and where you ranked regular season. Confusing as hell. So, if Nashville wins their division, but gets bounced in first round, best we can pick is 25th, and more likely 26th to 28th. If Nashville loses their division and gets bounced in the first round, then we pick anywhere from 15th to 22nd depending on the regular season points from all teams eliminated in first round as the selection goes worst to best excluding any division winners bounced. Confused? Me too. What we need to have happen is for Nashville to crap out remainder of season and finish middle of the pack, lose the first round and have a bunch of first round upsets. If that happens, we could be looking at a mid to late teens pick which would be a huge return for two UFA's in a very deep draft. Fingers crossed.

@udlbu  I think we should all be prepared for a let down at trade deadline. The salary cap made trades more difficult. This is now compounded by the lottery system for teams missing the playoffs, no GM wants to be the guy that traded his first thinking he could make the playoffs only to miss out and have his pick win the lotto. I don't buy the lottery protected analogy either, because sellers do not want to wait a year for a pick. These two factors make deals way more difficult, further complicated by the pressure of timing on trade day. I think most GM's will pick around the fringe and wait until summer for big moves. I will be absolutely shocked if we move more than two players by Monday, perhaps three, with Winnik, Jokinen and one other small deal most likely.

This tanking stuff is hard to deal with when there are so many games left. I think we are very unlikely to be so bad as to catch Arizona or EDM. Fourth last is likely unless we go on a run, which would drive us all mad. I think the best way to deal with this is to hope for some entertaining hockey, play our young guys a lot, realize we will actually win some games and cross our fingers that in the new lottery format, somehow we get rewarded for not being as crap as the bottom three. That approach will keep me sane. Good luck my fellow MLHS'rs! We will get through this!

@HeatherRickAkin  Pretty much same take I had, and I must have been typing at the same time. We might keep Phil, but we could also get a pretty amazing return. In either case, my first move out player is Bozak as I think as long as he is here, the temptation to pair him with Phil will continue, and Bozie is just a much a problem as the others. That is not acceptable. Dion is likely next, Phil, as Alec points out, only if the price is right. As bad as Phil was last night, he still made a few plays in the offensive zone where I just shook my head and thought, wow, not many guys in the league can do that.

Great article Alec. I read so much garbage on MSM and when I come here I generally find the articles insightful and the comments banter entertaining. I pretty much agree with every point you make, very sound logic. So happy MLHS exists otherwise I would have either completely dropped the Leafs by now and/or gone insane reading TSN nonsense. We will likely hold  on to Kessel until draft, unless somebody blows us away with an offer. And to your point, if we land McD, well hell, I wouldn't mind seeing how Phil looks on the wing of an elite talent. Fingers crossed but not counting on it.

Anyway, terrific job!

Ironically, when Burke was hired we had no top line players and no prospect depth, instead of a rebuild he let his ego get in the way and tried to do a quick retool turnaround. Didn't work. Now, we have top line players and some prospect depth and a top five pick with another first and everyone is yelling rebuild. I don't buy it. This is a retool and I don't think it will take five years. I would like to see the following:

Kessel to FLA for either Barkov/Huberdeau plus their 2015 1st;

Phaneuf to LA for 2015 1st and Richards and a prospect;

Bozak, Nashville 1st to AVS for O'Reilly;

Winnick for 2nd.

Draft three in first round and build from within.

Next year we have:

O'Reilly, Kadri, JVR

Lupul, Huberdov, Panik

Komarov Holland Clarkson

UFA one year, Richards, Leivo

Rielly Robidas

Gardner Polak

Percy Holzer

Reimer/Bernier

Leave Goats, Nylander, Brown, Leipsic etc in AHL for a year and leave all of our first round picks in junior for a year (unless we get McDavid).

This is a decent roster that tanks one more year as our D is scary, but retool and foundation is now in place.

Footnote, with above trades I would be happy to draft Hanifan if he was available.

@Burn_the_Loov_Boats @Dan39  I think Clarkson is an odd duck. Did you see him walking into dressing room with his coffee cup balancing on a little plastic bag and his dorky droopy toque. What is he 12? I know it is a small thing, but I can't see anyone following that as veteran leadership. I was in favour of Clarkson signing, but I don't know who this new Clarkson is. Terrible, terrible contract and player. There are so many guys in the league making a third his salary that do much more for their team. I would suck up the salary cap and bury him in the minors next year unless we somehow pull off a miracle and deal him.

@RaycroftButterflies @Dogger re-watch JVR against Boston in the playoffs. Anything but soft. I just think he loses interest when the games don't matter. With the right group I think he could be dominant. I go back and forth on JVR as he clearly has tons of value in a trade. Ideally, I would keep him and hope we can surround him with a more talented forward group.

@djamon @Yaknowwhat Exactly. The issue is really about asset management more so than does Bernier now suck. Bernier has had a shit month, but I am guessing he is still viewed highly by mgmt and other teams. If we are truly going to clean house here, it makes sense to consider all assets and what they can get. While my personal preference would be to roll with Bernier on a reasonable RFA contract, I could also live with Reimer as our guy if Bernier fetched us something really impressive. Doesn't mean Bernier isn't good, it is just good management.
