@IveHadPhaneuf @deedrag  I'd like to see this same stat over past few years. My guess is it would be pretty consistent in terms of them ranking near the bottom. I don't think it is a slump. I think they just do not buy in to playing good D, or as a line, don't feed off each other properly in their own zone.

@MaxwellHowe @deedrag  wow, that is the most telling stat I have seen. Watching them game in game out it is clear they are awful defensively, so I guess I am not surprised. What is surprising is that RC chooses to ignore the problem versus trying to fix it. We need at least one good defensive player on that line.

@Hmmm @ninepaces was at Flames - Sharks game last night. SJ plays five forwards on PP (if you include Burns as a forward). Not that unusual actually and using Kadri should benefit us long term as many top teams deploy that approach. I like Franson in that mix though as he is a points machine. Dion is currently playing the top of the diamond, so either way we appear well covered on PP.

@Cameron19 @Coldincowtown @ninepaces someone earlier posted about Leafs possibly getting Hall in a trade. He would be a game changer if he could play with a guy like Phil. Doubt Oilers would ever get that desperate where they deal Hall, but he would probably be the only guy on Oilers i would want on our team.

@ninepaces @Cameron19 Kessel will never be a great defensive player, but there is no denying his all world talent with the puck, either dishing it to others or putting in the net. You simply can't find many players like that. His problem is the guys with him. I'd like to see him play with some more defensive minded players 5 on 5. As for power play, he is a stud, if he was playing against us we would appreciate how great he really is as an offensive player.

@Cameron19 @Coldincowtown no worries, wasn't trying to bait you, i think Smith is an excellent piece in that trade but Eriksson, meh, pretty soft player. It is really quite amazing that Boston has traded away potentially two of the better centres in the league in past 15 years and remains a contender despite losing both deals (Thornton being the other of course). I know it is still early days for Seguin, but he looks like a star on the rise to me.

@Cameron19 @Coldincowtown gotcha, I wasn't implying they were all terrible either, I found the summary quite interesting as it clearly shows every team has their contract warts and for a short window  some players stats can look quite terrible. I could see Bruins-Blues doing something.

@Xxxxxnew Fair point, but that's more function of their absolutely atrocious defensive core, not Seguin. Man, he would fill our 1C spot nicely.

@Cameron19 True, but guys like Steen and Backes bring a lot more to their game than just points. I would take either one on our team at those salaries. Same could be said for Statsny but his salary just reflects the ongoing stupidity of anyone signing free agents. 20% premium seems to apply to all the big signings.

Unfortunately, our two most improved players this year are Kadri and Franson. Both in contract years, which really sucks. I think Kadri's play has surprised me the most. He is stronger on the puck this year and much better at competing in his own zone. I can't see him being traded as he will fit as a very strong 2C for many years to come. Franson is our problem as many have noted. Wish we had of locked him up last summer as his game just continues to steadily improve. Pay him or trade him. One or the other will need to occur pretty soon. I personally think Jake will be moved to clear space for Franson before year is out, or perhaps post season. I also think JVR or Lupul may be packaged with Jake in a move to get a 1C, but it is a guessing game who that is. If Colorado keeps shitting the bed, perhaps they enter the McDavid sweepstakes and consider moving an elite centre, Duchene anyone? :)

I would like to see a top centre with Kessel. Who do we think Gardner and jvr could get us in a trade? Gotta give to get. I see Nylander filling top six winger role next year so maybe we make a trade and end this defensively horrible trio experiment called ernie, Bert and jvr.

@Mind Bomb @Mcost61 @Burtonboy  It really is a mystery with him. The fact that he plays on PK clearly indicates he knows how to defend. However, he is the first guy to blow the defensive zone early and hang his D out to dry. The whole first line is guilty, but JVR could make a big impact just by being a little more committed on D. Very frustrating.

Very well played game by the Leafs. Dare I say it, they seem to be bringing structure to their play. Adding Booth and Lupul makes a big difference. I didn't like Robidas on left side and would prefer they move Rielly with Holzer. Anyway, good comeback. Kadri was a beast particularly in his own end. I never thought I would say that.

They don't deserve McDavid, I hope they somehow draft 4th or 5th and pick another dud. btw, was at Flames game last night, there is some really good young talent on that team now, Gaudreau is fun to watch.

@Cameron19 @Coldincowtown @Savo43 I'll concede the serious injury concern. As for old 26 and hard minutes, I don't buy that argument. If that were true, we would be saying guys like Toews and Crosby are on the downside of their careers (different players for sure, but simllar age and also on many deep run teams).

@Savo43 @Coldincowtown My logic is in trying to build a lineup that is bigger down the middle and has some winning pedigree. I admit the Staal experiment has not worked in Carolina, but part of that is due to shit goaltending and injuries. Two past cup winners. If Eric is a bust, we just don't resign him, freeing up cap space. As for Phaneuf, I would love to trade him straight up to NYR for M. Staal but there is no chance of that happening.

Here is a trade combination that would light up this board:

Phaneuf, JVR to NYR's for Staal and their first round pick;

Kadri, Gardner and the just acquired NYR pick to Carolina for the Staal brothers.

Kessel, E Staal, Lupul

Clarkson, J Staal, Nylander

Winnick, Holland, Booth

Komarov, Bozak, Santo

Staal, Franson

Polak, Rielly

Percy, Robidas

Three Ontario brothers all capable of handling the media nonsense.

Wow, only in Toronto could this salute gate become a front and centre story. Maybe the players were really pissed that fans were hating on them so bad that they threw jerseys on the ice and would have felt like hypocrites if they saluted so soon after that debacle. Maybe, just maybe the media could do their job and report on hockey stories not this crap. Wow, just wow.

I never liked the end of game salute. Comes across as cheesy. I actually like the fact that they ditched it and they should not bother going forward. If they really want to engage with fans, give out sticks to young kids in the crowd after a win.
