@vinoa @Leafs_17 I'd throw P9 into the Kessel for Seguin deal. I personally never liked Spezza and wouldn't want him on our team.

@Leafs_17 @vinoa @Coldincowtown @MaxwellHowe it means a lot. He would fetch us a big return if he was dealt. I don't personally think Kessel is the root cause of our issues, but I would still make him one of many on the trade list if it allowed us to grab elite young talent to start a reset.
@MaxwellHowe @Coldincowtown ….and Raycroft!
@Leafs_17 @vinoa That's why they might be ripe for a deal, just like us. Anyway, doubt it happens, but i'd take Seguin in a leaf uniform for Kessel right away just to reset our make up. Both great talents.
@Leafs_17 @Coldincowtown I'd play the shit of out Seguin in the middle. He would instantly be our number one centre.
@Bring the Cup Home @Wilbur He's tradable. Plenty of teams would take P9 as long as we were willing to eat a bit of his salary, which I would.
@Wilbur @Bring the Cup Home Yes, I still remember Sittler ripping the C off his jersey. I thought that was a low point as a Leaf Fan but they continue to test me.
@Anthony Petrielli Somebody should tell Dreger something drastic already happened, as in 15-4 in last two games. Holy hell he is a dumbass. I used to listen to Dreger, now i change the channel when he talks. He has no info worth listening to.

@MaxwellHowe @Coldincowtown Pretty much. Something stinks in leaf land. Can't only be the coach. We may need to completely reset.
How about these trades:
Kessel to Dallas for Seguin (throw in a prospect);
Bernier, Gardiner and JVR to Boston for Rask and Hamilton;
Boom, we have exorcised two bad trades.
If Boston or Dallas would throw in Julien or Ruff for Caryle I would dance in the streets with cow bells on!
I would also move P9 to anyone willing to listen (ideally for a good two way winger) just to clearly hit the restart. Play the hell out of the kids and wait for top 5 pick again. I don't care if none of these trades make sense, I enjoyed typing them!
@Optimustic @Coldincowtown It is partly his fault, but mostly the leaders of this team. It is a joke. He is as good as gone though. That's just the way it works.

@Omac13 I'd rather see Spott. Let him ride these prima donna asses and see who actually has character. Use the balance of the season to decide who stays.
Maybe P9 can punch himself in the face and get concussed! Sorry, it was too easy. Poor Dion, I shouldn't pile on as that is too easy. This blowout is the best thing that can happen. Clearly shows Shanny that he has a big job ahead. On a happier note, I have now switched to Flames game and am quickly becoming a big fan of them.
Bye Bye Randy. Take P9 with you please. Leadership issues abound.
I am almost afraid to look at the comments tonight :)
@PepTalk @Coldincowtown @Anthony Petrielli @docmma @T K O I think of Franson as a top 4, but note top two. Great on PP.

@PepTalk @Coldincowtown @Anthony Petrielli @docmma @T K O I think Lupul would be very tradeable if Leafs shop him in the spring.
4 days ago on An Advanced Stats Look at Leaf Players through 18 games
@4thcolapse If our GM(s) wanted to make an impact move, a combination of Gards combined with any one of JVR/Lupul/Bozak might get us an impact centre. Colorado always seems like best fit to me. They have started winning lately so perhaps they will sit tight. It would be ironic if they tanked and somehow won the lottery for McD. Yet another great centre.

@PepTalk @Anthony Petrielli @Coldincowtown @docmma @T K O I think Franson gets a contract like Gardiner ($5mm +). One of Gardiner or Phaneuf goes if we resign Cody. I think Phaneuf would be tough to move at 7mm. Say what you want about Franson, he plays way tougher than Gards in his own end. The good news is Franson and Gardiner would both fetch a good return in trade market.
@Anthony Petrielli @Coldincowtown @docmma @T K O I agree completely. Percy does everything pretty well, just needs time in NHL with the same partner.
@docmma I think Polak has been the biggest/nicest surprise for me. I don't miss Gunnar at all and have been really impressed with Polak's game. Very surprised STL traded him,
@docmma @Anthony Petrielli @T K O exactly, which is why it makes more sense to pair him with a speedy defence partner, Rielly or Gardiner. Franson has some elite skills that are under appreciated. He will grab a big salary if he goes UFA. He is average on D, but has high end offensive skills and an uncanny ability to get a quick dangerous shot away on the point. We will miss that if he moves on.
@deedrag @Bring the Cup Home @docmma Franson is growing on me. I think we generally do not appreciate how tough it is to find D men that can control the point and put up points like Franny does. I think if I had a choice I would re-sign him and see one of Gardiner or Phaneuf depart. I think Gardiner fetches a good player in return and would be fine seeing him play elsewhere as I think Rielly, Franson give us the offence we need long-term. We have some interesting decisions ahead.

@DeclanK @Coldincowtown @dlb Mad @mlclearwater agreed. When otherwise solid players like Winnick miss basic assignments in their own end, I chalk it up to a bad night. This team is middle of the pack and is likely going to see-saw back and forth, and drive us all crazy in the process.
4 days, 8 hours ago on Game Review: Game #18, Buffalo Sabres 6 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs 2
@dlb Mad @mlclearwater Terrible gap control, our forwards were leaving our zone early and our D got left hung out to dry. Also, some really brutal back check effort on some of Sabres goals. It was a stinker.
4 days, 9 hours ago on Game Review: Game #18, Buffalo Sabres 6 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs 2
Simple, our number one C is Bozak, our number one D is Phaneuf. They are good players, but they are very mediocre as numbers ones versus the top half teams in the league. Until that changes, nothing changes. It is really not that complicated.
4 days, 22 hours ago on Game Review: Game #18, Buffalo Sabres 6 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs 2
@Great Dane @jimmyg65 I'm not so sure I agree with that statement entirely. I am seeing a better team structure this year, albeit baby steps. The Leafs played quite well the first two periods and could easily have been up 2 zip as both goals Reimer whiffed a bit. The combination of brutal reefing (and I don't bitch about reffing), our team being a bit gassed and going up 3-2 all contributed to the onslaught in the 3rd. Reimer really was terrific after a so so first two periods. As for having your goalie steal a game. No good team in the league will succeed unless their goaltending steals them some games. What encourages me more than last night's win, is some semblance of structure starting to form with this team. I am a skeptic still, but we are playing a better system than last season.

@Hmmm @Jay_Berg I thought RC managed the goalies perfectly. He put his guy in and delivered two must wins and put Reimer in to see if he could rise to the challenge. I don't see how we can second guess the guy on perfection. CBC guys are complete idiots some times…..most times.
wow, trying to be objective, but the reffing is just so bad.

@Jmessih @Luke_R Haha, so true. I actually find myself coming to the site more when we lose as it is much more entertaining!
@TheLoovTrain @ingy56 @Great Dane Lupul to Anaheim at trade deadline for Nick Ritchie, boom, there's your power forward. I would throw in a prospect or 2nd rounder as well.
@Bruffins Leo, Robidas, Winnick (it pains me to say so, but it reflects how shitty I feel right now).

@vinoa @Coldincowtown @MLHS_Luke Wilson, Burke would have been making that decision together.
@Yan28 I agree. I think I would keep Kessel, not because I think he is a good leader, I just think every team needs to have an elite sniper and he is that for sure. The rest, bye bye and I would add a few names to that list if the return warranted the moves (Bozak, Kadri, Gardiner, Franson).
@MLHS_Luke I think Phaneuf is a decent top 4 guy, nothing more, nothing less. He gets flamed here because Burke was dumb enough to anoint him Captain. He is a mediocre leader, but would garner good value in a trade and our D would be worse as a result. Which if we tank, is not all bad.
While it was only one game, it was very telling. Without even watching the third period I saw a really good team completely control our team. Bergeron and Krecji controlled play from the dot and things flowed from there. Our top two centres may be near the bottom of the league and until that changes nothing will improve. You simply can't win in the NHL without being strong down the middle. I am not a Kadri hater, but man, he just needs to shut his yap and let his play do the talking. He chirps like he is a superstar. it is pathetic. Bozak is floating more than ever, perhaps he realizes that he is miscast and is just collecting pay cheques. Feels like a free fall is going to occur. A coaching change won't make any difference though unless the cast also changes IMO.
At a time like this I need a little Jimmy Buffett (and tequila) to capture how I feel about our mess of a team , hope you like it (and for all you youngsters, google Jimmy):
"Don't know the reason, I stay here all season"
"Pray for McDavid, I think I will do"
"To be a contender, need a number one centre"
"How we go get one, I haven't a clue"
(sing with me)
"Wasting away again in mediocre ville"
"Looking for Phil's shaker to solve"
"Some people say that Randy Caryle's to blame"
"But I know, it's all managements' fault"
I feel better already.
Sorry, I miss-typed and meant three third line centres. I think it was clear, but just to be clear, we have three third line centres!!!….and a mediocre 4th!
3 weeks, 5 days ago on Game Day: Game #8, Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs (7 p.m., CBC)
@Savo43 @Coldincowtown maybe, but I will never defend Bozak and Kadri as a one two punch. We accept this mediocrity year after year. We have been talking about this since Sundin left. So pathetic.
@Savo43 @Coldincowtown start with good centres in your own end.
We have decent wingers, decent defence, good goaltending and three third line forwards. It is so pathetic that we rely on Bozak and Kadri.
@Hmmm @Coldincowtown @Bruffins @djamon I have been really impressed with Hartley since he arrived. He is extremely positive with his team and I am sure they like playing for him. My guess is Calgary re-signs him before the year is out.
1 month ago on Sunday Mashup: Not All Bad
@Hmmm @Bruffins @djamon having the benefit of seeing big Joe often here in Calgary I would say the biggest difference is he immediately got big minutes when he arrived in Calgary and gained confidence. He has added 10 plus pounds this year and keeps improving. and of course, Hartley dances circles around RC in coaching young players.
Nice write up Alec. Very thorough and spot on. I am looking for ways to critique, but full props. You're a pro.

@MikeGartner11 @Coldincowtown @Cameron19 I don't know, but I sure would like to see what his game looks like if he was in Stamkos shape. Give me one season of slim Phil and if he performs the same or worse, fine, i'd alter my view. He will find it gets harder to maintain elite speed from here on in as things change when you hit your late 20's.
1 month, 1 week ago on Game Review: Game #2, Pittsburgh Penguins 5 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs 2
@Doit4Dougie @Coldincowtown My hope i guess is that a terrific coach could bring that out in a guy like Phil. RC is not that guy, one of many problems currently. Sigh, I am so pissed off with this organization.
@MikeGartner11 @Cameron19 @Coldincowtown i don't feel "lucky", sorry. If Phil committed to training the way elite players like Stamkos and Crosby do he would score 60 goals. We accept mediocrity too easily. Waste of incredible skill. I don't buy the fat body type argument. I train with plenty of people who said that and then once they get nutrition advice and some discipline, their fat quickly melts away.
Let me ask everyone this question: If you are building an organization and you want two or three skill guys to set the best example as leaders, do you start with a guy that blows off summer training, looks absolutely fat in commercials for media (have you seen phat phil in those SN commercials) baits the media about the training comments and tells them to relax, or do you want a guy with incredible skill (which Phil has) who trains as hard or harder than the best players in the league and makes a statement like "i am in the best shape of my life and plan to lead this team to the top". Phil is coddled by mgmt, it is embarrassing that he is wasting exceptional talent in his prime. What is more embarrassing is mgmt.'s acceptance. Leaders set the tone for the team, period. Something smells in leaf land.
Afternoon folks, have not posted in a while but have been lurking. Not sure how to read the mood yet, but personally I have very low expectations this year after being quite excited the past few seasons. Feels like a transition year with Shanahan assessing the organization. I will say after game one that the top two forward lines continue to have very little clue how to play in their own zone and no change to bottom six or defensive core will change the overall momentum of this team until Bozak and Kadri lines commit to winning puck battles on the boards in our zone and actually moving puck out of our own zone effectively. I fear a same old season is in store, with these symptoms firmly intact from last year.
