Wow, just wow! I think Shanahonis is the best GM we have ever had! I am so incredibly impressed. I am marking this down in my calendar as perhaps the worm has turned.

@Sonic Wave uummm, yeah ok, thanks, pretty sure my comment was "we welcome opinions, but show some respect" but thanks for the idiot comment, much appreciated. Anyway, I won't waste anymore time on this one.

@Shannigans @Yaknowwhat @TheLoovTrain we welcome your opinions, but not your smartass finish, move along or show some respect to those that have been here awhile.
5 days, 4 hours ago on Friedman, Lebrun, Kypreos on Joffrey Lupul rumours
@Yaknowwhat @Sonic Wave the "troll" is strong in these ones yak, don't get sucked in.
@udlbu I think we should all be prepared for a let down at trade deadline. The salary cap made trades more difficult. This is now compounded by the lottery system for teams missing the playoffs, no GM wants to be the guy that traded his first thinking he could make the playoffs only to miss out and have his pick win the lotto. I don't buy the lottery protected analogy either, because sellers do not want to wait a year for a pick. These two factors make deals way more difficult, further complicated by the pressure of timing on trade day. I think most GM's will pick around the fringe and wait until summer for big moves. I will be absolutely shocked if we move more than two players by Monday, perhaps three, with Winnik, Jokinen and one other small deal most likely.

This tanking stuff is hard to deal with when there are so many games left. I think we are very unlikely to be so bad as to catch Arizona or EDM. Fourth last is likely unless we go on a run, which would drive us all mad. I think the best way to deal with this is to hope for some entertaining hockey, play our young guys a lot, realize we will actually win some games and cross our fingers that in the new lottery format, somehow we get rewarded for not being as crap as the bottom three. That approach will keep me sane. Good luck my fellow MLHS'rs! We will get through this!
1 week, 1 day ago on GDT: Game #60, Winnipeg Jets at Toronto Maple Leafs (7 p.m., CBC)
@Wilbur @Dogger What a chump for saying that. I get the feeling we have a lot of wing nuts in that room including Holland if he said that. He should stick to his game...aka, try finding a game. I have been completely unimpressed with Holland and don't even consider him when trying to see what this team looks like in a few years.
1 week, 3 days ago on McKenzie/Ferraro on: O’Reilly, Bozak, Polak & Leafs Coaching Candidates
@whalz @Cameron19 Bozak is from Saskatchewan.
1 week, 4 days ago on The Leafs shouldn’t retain a dollar of Phil Kessel’s contract
@HeatherRickAkin Pretty much same take I had, and I must have been typing at the same time. We might keep Phil, but we could also get a pretty amazing return. In either case, my first move out player is Bozak as I think as long as he is here, the temptation to pair him with Phil will continue, and Bozie is just a much a problem as the others. That is not acceptable. Dion is likely next, Phil, as Alec points out, only if the price is right. As bad as Phil was last night, he still made a few plays in the offensive zone where I just shook my head and thought, wow, not many guys in the league can do that.
Great article Alec. I read so much garbage on MSM and when I come here I generally find the articles insightful and the comments banter entertaining. I pretty much agree with every point you make, very sound logic. So happy MLHS exists otherwise I would have either completely dropped the Leafs by now and/or gone insane reading TSN nonsense. We will likely hold on to Kessel until draft, unless somebody blows us away with an offer. And to your point, if we land McD, well hell, I wouldn't mind seeing how Phil looks on the wing of an elite talent. Fingers crossed but not counting on it.
Anyway, terrific job!
Ironically, when Burke was hired we had no top line players and no prospect depth, instead of a rebuild he let his ego get in the way and tried to do a quick retool turnaround. Didn't work. Now, we have top line players and some prospect depth and a top five pick with another first and everyone is yelling rebuild. I don't buy it. This is a retool and I don't think it will take five years. I would like to see the following:
Kessel to FLA for either Barkov/Huberdeau plus their 2015 1st;
Phaneuf to LA for 2015 1st and Richards and a prospect;
Bozak, Nashville 1st to AVS for O'Reilly;
Winnick for 2nd.
Draft three in first round and build from within.
Next year we have:
O'Reilly, Kadri, JVR
Lupul, Huberdov, Panik
Komarov Holland Clarkson
UFA one year, Richards, Leivo
Leave Goats, Nylander, Brown, Leipsic etc in AHL for a year and leave all of our first round picks in junior for a year (unless we get McDavid).
This is a decent roster that tanks one more year as our D is scary, but retool and foundation is now in place.
Footnote, with above trades I would be happy to draft Hanifan if he was available.
2 weeks ago on Leafs Trade Mike Santorelli & Cody Franson to the Nashville Predators
@Burn_the_Loov_Boats @Dan39 I think Clarkson is an odd duck. Did you see him walking into dressing room with his coffee cup balancing on a little plastic bag and his dorky droopy toque. What is he 12? I know it is a small thing, but I can't see anyone following that as veteran leadership. I was in favour of Clarkson signing, but I don't know who this new Clarkson is. Terrible, terrible contract and player. There are so many guys in the league making a third his salary that do much more for their team. I would suck up the salary cap and bury him in the minors next year unless we somehow pull off a miracle and deal him.
2 weeks, 6 days ago on Tuesday Mashup: Reimer to start third consecutive
@Savo43 @TheLoovTrain @Cameron19 @DCDC …and McDavid :)
3 weeks ago on Game 54 Scoring Chances: Maple Leafs 5 vs. Oilers 1
@djamon @GibsonLPStudio Apparently Tampa offered Ashton and Broll :)
@Hammertownleaffan @TheLoovTrain @Alec Brownscombe @Dogger In fairness, I bet she is pregnant in that photo, and I know we all think our wives are glowing when pregnant but, meh, not so much in this photo.
@RaycroftButterflies @Dogger re-watch JVR against Boston in the playoffs. Anything but soft. I just think he loses interest when the games don't matter. With the right group I think he could be dominant. I go back and forth on JVR as he clearly has tons of value in a trade. Ideally, I would keep him and hope we can surround him with a more talented forward group.
@djamon @Yaknowwhat True, but we have risk too, as in, the players we want to move get hurt.
@Yaknowwhat No kidding, I really think that is just a coincidence though. My worry is we keep playing a tighter system and our goalies start playing lights out! Then it is bye bye top pick.
@Cameron19 @Coldincowtown @Top_Jimmy OK, well my guess is this nonsense is likely from posters who don't know their ass from a hole in the wall. I have not noticed the trend, but will watch for it and will be sure to respond.
@djamon @Yaknowwhat Exactly. The issue is really about asset management more so than does Bernier now suck. Bernier has had a shit month, but I am guessing he is still viewed highly by mgmt and other teams. If we are truly going to clean house here, it makes sense to consider all assets and what they can get. While my personal preference would be to roll with Bernier on a reasonable RFA contract, I could also live with Reimer as our guy if Bernier fetched us something really impressive. Doesn't mean Bernier isn't good, it is just good management.
@Cameron19 @Top_Jimmy I have not read all the threads so I am not sure I follow. The comments about Reimer were mainly around his inability to control rebounds and the negative effect it has had on his performance. From what i have read I think Bernier comments are more around not offering him a long term big money contract yet (Top Jimmy excluded) and floating the idea that if someone wanted to overpay for him, we could trade him. People on this board are generally knowledgeable and don't float this " i knew he sucked crap". Since he is RFA I don't see any merit in the long term contract stuff, but I don't see a huge wave of people hear yelling trade Bernier so I don't get your post.
@AlbertaMapleLeaf first thought that crossed my mind was they had a deal for him. Perhaps I was dreaming.
@Xxxxxnew …and as soon as we move Franson, he will be our new number 4!
3 weeks, 1 day ago on Game 54 Scoring Chances: Maple Leafs 5 vs. Oilers 1
@Yaknowwhat Agreed, but if the right deal came along I would move him. It would have to involve a draft pick and prospect. I don't see any realistic trade partners though. He is still RFA so we have all the leverage, no need to rush.
@Cameron19 Cam, I see you mention Wingels a lot. What is it in him that you like so much. Just curious, I have watched him a bit but will start paying more attention.
@Cameron19 @MaxwellHowe I think that is the key statement, depends what we have left to put on ice. If we have kept assets i say keep him here. If we truly have cleaned out the kitchen, send him back.
@Cameron19 @Coldincowtown I guess I just don't see it as all that appealing for the receiving team as it puts rebuild back a year. In the case of dealing Franson though, if all I can get is a second and a prospect from other teams, then this type of deal makes sense. If another playoff bound team offers me their first I think I take it instead of risking deferral as I want to draft this year. it is an interesting debate though as a team like LA could be a top ten pick so a nice gamble. It would be funny to be actually cheering for them to not win lottery since we want their pick. In any case, still don't think they do that deal and I am starting to argue against myself.
3 weeks, 2 days ago on Game 53 Scoring Chances: Devils 4 vs. Maple Leafs 1
@Cameron19 @Coldincowtown people say that but how would that actually work, default to a first the following year?
@Cameron19 @Coldincowtown those moves would all make me happy. I don't think LA will trade their first for Franson though, no GM wants to be the guy who traded a potentially lottery pick that draws the lucky straw. I hope we don't have to take Marner, but it is very possible. I want the bigger C.
@KingTon haha, well played. Venting is why we are here sometimes my friend. It helps with getting over the pain. I've been around here long enough to throw shit on the pile once in a while.
@BoneChompski @Coldincowtown ummmm…. Schenn, Nylund, Benning, Richardson, Iafrate…this legacy is long. Granted, I have hope as we did the Rielly thing right by sending him back to junior. We also have a long legacy of drafting small forwards in first round…but no worries, I am generally positive on Leafs and will always be a fan, just venting. At least we didn't trade this years first pick, which in itself is a big step forward for Leafs versus past drafts with game changing players (lindros, Sequin/Hall) drafts.
Since i am bitter and grumpy about Leafs right now, here is how I think our tank will play out:
-we finish 28th thus eliminating any non lottery chance of drafting McDavid/Eichel;
-Phoenix or NJ win Bettman rigged lottery moving us down to 4th overall pick;
-Strome goes third, eliminating chance for big 1C;
-we either draft a D man (Hanifan) and ruin him by playing him at 18 or;
-we draft a small skilled winger who turns out to be terrible defensively and doesn't compete. (sound familiar?)
This I am afraid, is just the way we roll.
@Omac13 Can't imagine Jets unloading Lowry for any of those guys. He is a very big, capable C.
1 month ago on Monday Mashup: Perennial All Star
@Hammertownleaffan @B_Leaf correct, and that's why we should start the process sooner versus later.
1 month, 1 week ago on GDT: Toronto Maple Leafs vs Ottawa Senators (7pm, SN)
Well, actually scored some goals and move down one notch in standings. All in all, probably a good outcome long term. But, man have our goalies let us down in January. I know I will get flamed by many saying goalies are not our problem and to that I will generally agree. But, when you are playing like shit and can't buy a goal, you need your goalie to step up and keep you in it. Every single game a shit goal or two to start and not one save when they need it. When scorers are struggling and the other team pumps goal after shitty goal by you, that in itself will feed a tailspin. Full tank mode now lads, may the necessary trades start. I have little faith in Nonis and can only hope Shanny has many voices helping to make this happen.
@Yaknowwhat No argument here, unfortunately, my instincts and past experience tell me they will wait and screw it up.
1 month, 1 week ago on Game 46 Scoring Chances: Blues 3 vs. Maple Leafs 0
@Yaknowwhat IMO, absolutely not, I'm just looking at the schedule and could see it happening.
@Dogger OK, what about Duchene and their first (which could easily be a top ten)?
It will be interesting to see what mgmt does over next five weeks. After a brutal schedule this past month, our schedule is pretty soft from now leading up to trade deadline. Only a few back to backs, more teams with losing records than winners and very few elite teams ahead. My guess is the evaluation is ongoing, but if nothing else, our recent trip through the west proves we have a long way to go to compete with those teams, so I am hoping for some change regardless of our performance in next 15 or so games.
@TheLoovTrain Was never a Who fan, but well played my friend.
@Yaknowwhat he awakened his inner Palmateer!
@Yaknowwhat i thought Bernier was pretty average during our road trip. I know we didn't score, but he wasn't great either.
@The Chap Man @mtommy You had me at your avatar :)
@Optimustic Nice. Man if we could somehow draft D. Strome and L. Crowse this year, combined with Freddy, I would start to actually get optimistic again.
NFL sudden death format sucks though. I would much prefer a 15 minute quarter. Nobody should win or lose because of a coin toss.
I don't think this deal would ever work for Colorado due to spending issues, but if they offered their 1st and ROR for Phaneuf and Kessel, would you take it?
never mind -)
Any one want to bet Packers miss the field goal?
@Knights2Leafs you forgot Stamkos :)
