Maybe you're on high school brain mode (since it isn't summer vacation yet), but high schoolers may not know the full impact of a punch, but adults should. Perhaps those two were jealous that Matthew had a date. Doesn't look like those two could ever get a date even if they tried really hard.
You should know about anti bullying. They have programs in the school all of the time. Bystanders have an obligation as well. One could have simply gone and got security and alarmed them of what was going on. It was going on for awhile before tragedy struck. I hope those two feel horrible about what they did, but it's doubtful or they wouldn't have tormented to begin with. They're how old? Time to grow up.
I just hope Matthew makes a full recovery and his family has the strength to heal and help Matthew heal from all of this.

Think your "joke" about throwing away an $8 beer is in poor taste. I am a teacher as well, and feel your views and writing is poor. There was no chance of one being "the better man." Beer was thrown on him and his date. He was the better man by simply approaching them and not throwing back, be it a drink or punch. What guys throw beer on a lady. They were looking for trouble. Those two are lucky nobody punched them out. I can't believe nobody in the stands said or did anything. Cowards!
Anyway, I don't have as much time in my day as you apparently have to force my unwanted opinions on people, but I will say this. You obviously are not a parent, or you wouldn't have written some of those things
