i had to check to see who was on CAL when MacInnis was young and i don't remember the names so well.  Macoun came along soon after, though so the two youngsters maybe grew together?

like Seabrook and Keith?

who mentored Blake, Coffee/Lowe, Potvin, Bourque, Foote, Stevens?  i'm not looking to find out, just thinking that maybe a guy doesn't need a mentor "star player" if he's already got it within himself to become that.

and, to get to my point.  Connor Brown and Morgan Rielly, to me, are like that i think.  they'll find a way.

a coach can be a mentor as well.  but your point is valid...nothing like a superstar being there to set an example

come to think of it, Franson seems to be liked and appreciated by this group (Bozak, Kessel, JVR, Phanuef) ... he has that way about him right now that suggests he feels like a leader/mentor too

bad timing for him, but also a chance to come along even further in the AHL knowing how close he was.  so when he gets his chance again, he might be even a little bit better.

i'm not sure analytics have anything to do with how Carlyle perceives the team's play haha.  last year he knew things weren't ideal without needing further proof.

you can't stand on a bench and feel or see nothing, and last as long as Carlyle.  despite what some people will always think of him.

no i wouldn't.

compare the first line with the 2nd and 3rd line.  it's the work effort + skill in those support lines we need more of.

our top line is "enough" of that (what they do i mean).  we have "enough" for the special teams.

if we're going to add a skilled player who's knock is that he doesn't compete hard enough ... what direction are we hoping to go in?

i don't know the truth of the matter because how could i?  but Dubas strikes me as a guy who says a lot of positive things...things the person he's talking to wants to hear.  and he always seems to be talking.

i'm sure he's a good listener even though it's rarely seen by me.  i don't think he's a dummy.

but.  painting only a rosy picture isn't going to help Nonis.  stating only the obvious, while safe, isn't going to help us make the tough decisions either.

just a feeling i get.  hope there's more to him.  but in order to get this franchise to another level we really do have to be smart, patient, and at some point...bold.  not just the appearance of it.

both our goalies are making the routine saves and coming up with the big saves.  that's nice isn't it?

they're not really playing above their heads, though.  there have been goals scored that could have been stopped, but the team has also responded to those. it's amazing, that goalies who make routine saves get their teams believing in them, which in turn makes everyone better.  success breeds success?  did i say it right?

all good questions.  and if i were to actually try to define them i might have to reconsider them all.  top line gets minutes but it seems that Santorelli's always on the line that does the best work for us, and Winnik seems to get the toughest matchups each night.

Holland's line might get easier minutes than Kadri's...not sure.

but i'd just keep it simple right now.  i think Carlyle feels good about Holland and Kadri lines, and who starts where might have more to do with who matches up better for the faceoff each game within a game.

well, technically the truth is that they're sharing the 2nd line spotlight moreso than not really being on the 2nd line anymore

it's not like we added Benn-Malkin-Williams to the team and pushed Lupul and Clarkson down the depth chart.

more like Winnik and Santorelli are pushing Lupul and Clarkson.  but i think Lupul and Clarkson have done just as well with Holland.

we have two #2 lines.

i think if we remain relatively healthy we will continue to improve

it's tough to make a trade, though, when you're worried about disrupting things.  and ultimately, i think we do need another elite player in a key position if we hope to be a real playoff threat.

Mirtle says Lupul and Clarkson are no longer on the 2nd line.  that's not untrue, though it's a little misleading to me too since it's more like a 2A and 2B situation we have going.

i feel really good about both lines right now, and whenever Komarov returns there's a real possibility of icing 4 solid lines (or one dangerous one and 3 others the coach can feel good about).

his 5 points aren't bad, should i clap a little?

13 hours, 58 minutes ago on Thursday Mashup: Polak returning, Shooting for Seven

so, we didn't change the core players but changed the rest.

the core players aren't the ones leading by example.  it's the rest who are really setting the tone right now.

seems i was right when i said things could turn around by simply focusing on the not-core, eh?

and i wasn't alone.  but we did have strong opposition.  and the season is far from over.

but what's the point in only using history and hindsight to stand up and pound your chest?  we're not Habs fans here.

the fans away from the ACC are powered with optimism much more than the ACC crowd, where we're predominantly tense waiting for the worst.

the travel is one thing, but once they hit the ice i think this road trip is going to be good for the group.  the team has already created strong off-ice bonds and now is a chance for the group to get even tighter with the new guys like Booth, Panik and even Ashton
