i love you hockey
makes sense...but i thought i heard Jan1 some time during the last few weeks

Phanuef-___ against Crosby
___-Franson versus Malkin
... Holzer, Rielly, Gardiner, Robidas...
combos that have had at least some success before
combos that were dreadful mostly before
Phanuef-Holzer (after a while)
they played well at times last year
what pairs would you suggest?
i think extensions can be negotiated when the new year begins (Jan 1) ... maybe dip the toes in that water
i expect he'll be 5+ and heading somewhere else.
do we trade him and ignore the standings?
funny, he was getting points even when not playing great early on, so it is what it is.
i'd trade a few less points for the way he's been playing lately.
Kessel helped him out a lot early on. after the first two games Kessel took his effort to a higher level. JVR has been up and down, mostly down. but at least Bozak's joined the party.
problem i have with a lot of "articles" is that they sometimes judge good and bad based on whether or not he put up some points and didn't show up in the highlights for goals against
remember that Raymond 4 point game last year? that great effort wasn't remotely impressive when you watched him sift around the ice all night. dished a puck off here and there and got a few second assists on the back of two other guys' great efforts.
a lot of us here thought Bozak was playing lame (meaning hurt) and we hoped together that it was something that wouldn't drag on all year (memories of Franny and Gunnar last year)
that is far from true
he was a shell of himself in the first month
didn't have the same jump or determination he's shown lately
a week or so ago he turned it up a level in a 3rd period and he's played better ever since
i've never been anit-Bozak and felt i was just being fair to say that...and i found in my game notes each night that he just wasn't that good. not even his face-offs could save him.
those smiles are big and beautiful
JVR for RoR+Hedja
Leivo for Couturier
Gardiner+Franson for Fayne+Marincinincini
Lupul for Nolan+Stoll
you want to trade Gards for Cman? that's a low blow
- he plays great for the next 45 days and then gets hurt
- we do well enough without him
- he returns to the lineup 2 weeks before the traded deadline and picks it up where he left off
- we trade him to a contender who thinks he's the last piece of their puzzle
if he was it was hush hush. i asked that question after each game and never got an answer here
first we need to know what teams he'll allow a trade with
@Bring the Cup Home
Bozak was lousy for the first month and has played well for a couple weeks now. when did he take a lot of heat? first month?
there is a crowd waiting to poo on his parade as soon as he's not good. fawk dem
we lost a bunch of players and then signed a different bunch of players with the money we had available.
i like the group we have now that includes Winnik, Santorelli and Komarov.
i'm over it.

you can win a championship with Bozak on the team. he works hard and has plenty of talent to play in the league.
there's 20 or so other players a team could use to help him out
grim? haha. meh
we could be trading a playoff spot for a bunch of 2nd round picks
is it worth it?
names in order....
Varlamov, O'Rielly...Tanguay, Barrie
O'Rielly to Toronto
i love the Peg in the North
i wonder how many hits Steve Webb averaged in his short career. i mean, that's all he really focused on. he played the same way i play versus my kid in NHL15
i'm not sure Holzer's good enough to make up for Gardiner's brain farts. Jake's a tough guy to support sometimes. but maybe. who knows until we see it, eh
i do think that we can trade away the players who hold us back in order to improve a little each time. though i don't know other GMs will make it so easy.
ultimately, contender status will come with good drafting and development...
if JVR's worth that to someone then i'm thrilled they're catching him on the highlights
but i'm afraid a good scout will notice the other parts of his game.
now, he isn't the same as he was last year imo. but he could easily get back to being amazing and he could grow a little more from there even.
i wouldn't give him away. but if a GM thinks he's going to be one of the elite LWers in the game in a few years and will pay for that, then i cash in because i don't think he's sharp enough to become that saavy two-way guy who will win the matchups with Tavares and Malkin and Nash challenges.
the point is exchanging players to get different players once you recognize a player doesn't suit what you're building as much as another (this is just my opinion of what i am judging of course)
we're not getting older, but we are changing a few dynamics.
JVR to O'Rielly gives us a skilled player who can match up better against Crosby and Tavares imo.
Lupul to Perron i can barely judge except to say that Perron is skilled and scrappy and Lupul is great when he's healthy, which is not often enough...and i want to cut salary somewhere.
Fayne from Franson - pending UFA will likely make a lot more than Fayne but not necessarily be worth it.
Marincin from Gardiner - 2 years younger and potential to be every bit the offensive player Jake is, plus better potential to be a solid defensive player if the offense never comes.
i think the lineup adjustments with RoR in the mix make it easier for Leivo or Nylander to find a groove in a year or so. moreso than with JVR i mean.

Holzer had a good camp and i was surprised when he didn't make the club.
that was also years ago.
some guys improve in that time.
if we could get more, great. i still like RoR.
maybe Philly would like Lupul and JVR back for Couturier and something but CAP is an issue.
i don't think we have enough to trade up to contender status unless we get our goalies to frickin start playing all-world...we'd have to empty a few prospects to make that happen to i think.
but imo O'Rielly completes a top 6 better than JVR does (so long as our top 6 includes the likes of Bozak, Kessel and Kadri).
Lupul's a good player but he's hurt too much to factor in often enough. Perron is similar, but cheaper.
the swap of D's doesn't promise anything. but Franson's UFA status becomes EDM's worry and i'm ready to move on from Gardiner...and Marincin has some size and upside and waiver eligibility to give us some development room (possibly). keep the door revolving for that 3rd D pair (Loov, MacWIlliam, Nilsson, Holzer, Percy, etc)
i think Erhoff plays it a lot tighter at the blue lines than Gunnar ever did. he's not as vulnerable to getting beat with speed, or at least he plays like he's not so afraid of getting beat wide.
i had my issues with Gunnar but i know what you mean and that's close enough haha
to COL: JVR
to TOR: O'Rielly, Hejda
to EDM: Gardiner, Franson, Lupul
to TOR: Marincin, Fayne, Perron
i expect the CAP to go up and Komarov's 3M a year sets a bit of a bar i think.
based on that, i think i'd rate Santorelli's worth at 2.75 and Winnik's at 2.5
these two have the right approach, and i think they're good guys to have in the mix to bring youngsters in to play with. i'd like to try to reduce the turnover a little this summer until we get to the point where we're only changing a couple bodies each off-season.
i would look at the other contracts and consider where to make up the difference so i could keep these guys...at the moment.
JVR is similar to Gardiner in my eyes. skilled but not sharp enough to be more.
maybe he lost a step and can regain it and become a better player. he's still young and has room to grow. but his defensive work is awful and his decisions with the puck are momentum killers too often right now. where's the forecheck???
i'd take O'Rielly because he's also young and talented, but he has a work-ethic and approach of a more natural leader. a winner. he also does "the little things" right without having to think too hard out there. i mean, he's focused all the time and it's not a strain on him.
O'Rielly could simply bring more to our team i think
did anyone see Kessel get wrecked into the corner boards on an icing call in the 2nd period?
no replays. no mention of it. it looked bad. got up a little shaken but played on.
i didn't think Kessel was too bad in regards to effort. he and JVR came out strong to start i thought, and JVR proceeded to annoy me for most of the way thereafter. Kessel didn't get a lot accomplished but he was similar to Crosby in a lot of ways. in it and doing enough to still be dangerous.
he's picked it up the last couple weeks after starting the year slow
he's back to being "not the problem"
Ehrhoff has looked good in every game i've seen him play in since his name came up in trade discussions leading up to PIT acquiring him.
in hind sight, yes i would have liked to have traded for him.
feelings that are starting to fester in me
- the one UFA we should re-sign is Santorelli. even before Winnik. i think it will be close to Komarov money
- Franson's good play has been a saving grace for us this year since Robidas and Gardiner have been let downs mostly. he's become the toughest decision for me now. i expect him to demand a contract that he soon won't live up to, that will find him back in that whipping boy stance. it will hurt to trade him unless we can find a replacement for his contribution...he might be a guy we just take our chances with July 1st
- i'd trade JVR for RoR straight up
- i'd trade Gardiner for the highest bid
and the last feeling that i seem to have growing and festering this year is "for F@!@ sakes, Bernier!"
i have been useless. haven't seen a Marlies game in a month. i thought he was hurt.

PP slipping makes me think back to summer when Spott and Kessel had a brief discussion (that got everyone wound up). funny, if we can't shit on Carlyle, problems slide. is Spott in charge of the PP or not?
now, watching us lose puck battles and execute awful dump-ins can't be what any of the coaches are asking, so the system isn't the problem until the players do it right and it still fails.
where did they draft wrong though? maybe they did, i'm just asking. when did they go off the board?

heart of a Lion
i hope Holzer plays well
i'm anxious to see him
also looking to see something from Booth to make me care
2 days, 10 hours ago on Wednesday Mashup: Game Day in Pittsburgh
that was seriously bad. that CBC guy took a bunch of ideas that weren't bad and perverted them to mean something else
analytics is the reason why enforcers are losing relevance?
haha fuck off
i was going to add that, funny you mention it... learning on the job
