huh...yeah, i miss Lupul-Kessel at times
i was thinking Kuli getting back into the scoring ways and
i wanted to see that 4th line act like the soft scoring line with Holland at centre. maybe bring out the best of the youngsters with some good high-tempo shifts with the potential to score some timely goals

i didn't realize the Thornton play took place on the same shift as the Neal knee to the head play. BOS was already looking for retribution and then saw a potentially debilitating cheap shot delivered to the head of Marchant ... i can see why Thornton was out for blood.
i've been in the battle before, where you watch your guys go down and you've had enough. what goes through your mind is vengeance. inflicting pain is the decision you make on short notice when you see the number of the guy who started it all and hasn't answered for it yet.
Thornton hammered him good. and i don't think he hit a guy with a glass jaw. but in those scrums with those short punches you really do try to hit hard because you think your hardest shot still won't be enough to cause enough pain.
so, to me, it is almost a surprise Orpik was hurt to the extent he was there.

i was thinking last night as i watch Clarkson play, and Raymond, and Holland and stuff...and i was thinking of how he made out in NJ...and i was wondering out loud if the best-suited centre wouldn't have been none other than Grabovski.
Ashton-Holland-D'Amigo (prefer to beef it up with a Biggs or Broll but i can live with one of Raymond or D'Amigo)

Gunnarsson has no choice but to take a defensive role. it's the only thing he does well. once he gets the puck on his stick his best play is getting it out of our end. he helps our possession by getting the puck back. he hurts our transition and breakout. he doesn't help his partner go on the offensive. it's just the way it is. i like Gunnar, but wish he was our 3rd line defensive rock.

"Its not like Kessel and van Riemdyk and Phaneuf are playing amazing hockey every night, playing great two-way games, taking the body every night"
see, i just don't think these guys you've listed have been the problem. i think they've shown up and played well enough for me to not put it on them at all.
if you want to see it differently then go for it. but Phanuef, Kessel and JVR have not been the problem this year at all.

would you swap Kane for Toews straight up? i said we have no comparable centre so it wouldn't make sense.
you think Kane is a top winger in the league, but i wouldn't value him the same as a top centre in the league.
i would swap Kessel or JVR for Kane and expect Chicago to not miss a beat. that's what i say.
3 hours, 35 minutes ago on Game in Gifs – Game #33, Blues 6 vs. Leafs 3
well, i disagree. Phaneuf is as good as CHI's best.
Kessel is as good as Kane.
JVR is as good as Hossa (who i think is their best player along with Towes).
Leddy was the young offensive player to break out so i chose Rielly for that swap.
now, go through all the rest of the personnel and compare the players and that's where you'll see the massive discrepancy. do it without Bozak and Toews as the top centres, and what you'll find is they have 4 lines of quality to our 3 lines.
3 hours, 36 minutes ago on Game in Gifs – Game #33, Blues 6 vs. Leafs 3
you can compare the Leafs pillars to the Chicago pillars all you want. other than Toews, who is better than Sharp, Seabrook and Hossa that i left out? maybe i should have picked Keith instead of Seabrook...ok, same swap with Phaneuf then.
if Kessel or JVR were a centre i'd swap them for Toews. but remove Hossa from their lineup and leave all the rest in place and Chicago isn't as powerful. THEY ALL contribute to giving them 4 lines to work with. even if Toews is world class, any player can elevate his game to that level for a series.
Doug Gilmour was the best player in the world one year. lots of players are. Steen this year.

Carlyle can't find a 4th line to play more than 5 minutes a night, and the 3rd line he assembles isn't even remotely close to anything that the top 10 teams have to lean on.
how can you say the support is there?
3 hours, 42 minutes ago on Game in Gifs – Game #33, Blues 6 vs. Leafs 3
as a business owner that cares and works hard, what do you do if your workers don't follow your lead? are you still the problem? maybe they are.
i say the Leafs need better role players moreso than better skilled players.
3 hours, 44 minutes ago on Game in Gifs – Game #33, Blues 6 vs. Leafs 3
i think Kessel showed his team mates a ton when he played Chara body to body in 7 games last year.
i think Phanuef showed his team mates the heart of a winner the way he played too in that series.
JVR as well.
3 hours, 46 minutes ago on Game in Gifs – Game #33, Blues 6 vs. Leafs 3
they've shown me they could be good enough.
they've never been on a team that's built well enough in support of them to know.
swap Kessel, JVR, Rielly and Phaneuf for Kane, Hossa, Seabrook and Leddy and i suspect CHI is still every bit the championship team.
pick the top two wingers, young D and top D on all the other finalists for the last decade and i don't think the team's suffer much at all for it.
the difference is the quality of the rest of the roster. i can't remember a team in the finals that didn't have a solid bottom 6 forward group or a 2nd defense unit that could play a huge role, do you?
i think our elite players are worth the gamble. i think we have some potential grinders on the Marlies. there is work to be done, but pillars are in place to continue to move forward right now.

you're talking union workers who you can't replace. the NHLPA can't protect a player who doesn't contribute to a team in the way they want...who finds himself without a job when his contract expires.
