i love you hockey
one that shows more Leafs victories, i agree completely

where do Kadri and Holland fit if we're resigning Bolland or looking for someone like him? do we take a chance and just go with Bolland-Bozak-Kadri-Holland down the middle and try to fill the wings with better players?
i thought they signed here because they chose us
i woulnd't think of it that way. i'd look at his skill: check. then i'd consider all the players who have no chance of being physcially dominant in the NHL and i give this kid a chance to be one who can.
lol, that list sounds like everyone who has shown up on a Leafs moch draft
maybe the reason is nothing more than "anti Leafs"
we needed certain types of players at certain times. Connolly wasn't meant to be the 1C of the future, so his failure to be awesome wasn't a black mark on our GM or scouts imo.
Beauch and Komi were signed to add veteran leadership and physicality to a defense corps that was devoid of NHL talent. our GMs and scouts were the envy of half the league at the time those contracts were signed.
Clarkson was the prized FA forward last summer who had lots of interest. we needed a physical player capable of top 9 minutes.
lots of other scouts and GMs would have made the same mistakes as ours did. the teams who didn't move on those guys had different needs, or were restricted to do so.
i get it. i'm not banking on them, though. it's a matter of not thinking Gardiner is what i want after seeing what he can be.
Gunnarsson's a guy who might be more valuable to our team than in a trade. Gardiner, i think, could be a guy i'd rather have the trade compensation if it's as high as some value him to our team.
he does not appear to be fearless to me. maybe that's something?
that guy running the show in NJ seems to judge his players quite well. he seems to be able to determine who he can let walk and not miss them, and he seems to know when to pay a guy to stay.
he judged that he would pay Clarkson a lot to stay. to me, that's telling.
it's not all about a player's individual point totals to me, though.
do you fire the scouts before they give you bad advice? wouldn't they need a track record first? has there been enough time for Nonis to go through that entire process?
Brad Richards looked like a bad signing. a few years later, with other changes to the team, is it still so bad?
lots of moves look bad before they look good, and lots of times a player will come in "hot" and make a GM look like a genious before the truth comes out.
this jackie redmond girl isn't bad to look at. free agent?
and GMs rely heavily on the people advising them on most FA signings. sometimes they snag guys they know themselves, of course.
but a GM should know the players he has so he can properly gauge their value to the team. and what it would mean to the team to move them out.
not sure, did he screw that up?
maybe the Grabovski-MacArthur for Bolland-Clarkson change of direction?
i don't care to go back on that one even though it didn't work out this year, because reversing that doesn't suddenly excite me. i still prefer the two we got.
how good is Guelph?

that's totally true. but unfortunately, Reimer came in when the situation was critical and we were all at our emotional tipping points for the season.
but when we lost 8 in a row, Reimer let in some very soft goals at very bad times. he was ok, literally just ok. and no better.
before Bernier got hurt he was good. when he came back he was still hurt and his stats suffered for it because he was bad.
Reimer really was "just ok" when we needed him most, and then he was good when the playoffs were a distant memory.
stats don't tell that story over that long a sample size.
it's the fact that he competes hard in addition to that speed that makes him so highly ranked
Gallagher's a frickin prick i'd love to have on our team.
@Ian from Etobicoke
it all depends on what each team wants, and what each team thinks about Gardiner and the prospect.
i don't know the prospects too well. so i'm not convinced it's a move to make or not.
but, Gardiner, to me, isn't the type of player i want to build around on the defense. Rielly is. Percy and Granberg are. Finn is.
i know that Gardiner is the most established of them all, and i think he's better than most people do defensively. i just don't like how he fits into a team concept with his game the way it is, and how it projects to be based on "when he's at his best"...not in comparison to the others.
the D needs shot blockers, bangers, sandpaper...character guys. there is room for Gardiner, sure, but i don't think a top 4 can be made up of Rielly, Finn, Gardiner, Percy and Granberg (if they reach their full potential i mean).
so, for me, the devil i know is expendible, so if i think the devil i don't know is worthwhile i make the trade. but, EDM might not see it that way, so the i'd have to weigh the entire trade.
Ron F'n Swanson is all the reason you need to watch more.
we all know the scouts make mistakes, or rather, we know none of them have crystal balls.
this is an opportunity for he stats crowd to find a better method, or to sell some more people on it. and if there is nothing there, then you aren't going to lose anyone.
i guess we're at the mercy of the 7 drafting in front ot us.
heck, maybe someone else slips through and Ritchie's not there. maybe we trade down and add a 2nd round pick.
1 day, 4 hours ago on Morning Mashup
i know it's not a science, but have a look at all these power forwards on hockey fights website.
Ritchie stands out. i want lots of Lupic, Wilson, Foligno types. Leivo and JVR can be our power forward finess wingers of the future. Brown's our skilled guy. Broll and Biggs could use a Ritchie haha
are all these advanced stats kept for junior players? if so, how long?
it would be great if they've been kept for a decade, but still good if only the last 5 year or so.
i'd be interested to see what the moch drafts would look like if they were based solely on advanced stats. then i'd like to see how it compares to how the prospecs rank years later.
has it been done? is it doable? if not and if so then why the hell not?
i look at the group of players already under contract heading into next season: Kessel, Phanuef, Lupul, Clarkson, JVR, Bozak, Gleason, Gunnarsson, Kadri and Bernier, Orr, Rielly.
then i circle Bolland's name.
then i wonder what Shanahan's decision on all of the above. who is the core he wants. who are the leaders he wants. who on this list aren't what he wants?
i honestly don't know you position on Gardiner. i know of the couple people who see it the way i do, and we're in the minority i think. and i'm not taking on WW so no worries, i'm not here to poop on Gards haha
just the Sun, eh? the other papers do a good job and attract the smart fans? dare i go read some of the articles and the comments there?
what's Mirtle tweeting today, or Feschuk writing for starters. i'm rushing to find out lol
yup, i'm not pretending it's a home run, and it could come back and be awful, but i think all the "experts" would gush at the 1C possibilities.
i'm also in the "Gardiner's not the answer" camp. i like Percy, Finn, Rielly and now Granberg a lot more, even if only one has played in the NHL, i know i know.
but i also see Gardiner as a player with a lot of value that we don't give away. i think EDM would be assuming as much risk as we would. i don't know what Gardiner's value is to other teams, though. is that even a trade possibility?
we didn't really have too many injuries on the D this year. (not at the same time) there weren't many opportunities to get guys up to fill in really.
and there would have had to be a fit. MacWilliam might have been a fit for Ranger/Gleason, for instance.
Brennan's strengths were his offense, but without being reliable in his own end, how would he have fit on a blue line that had that trouble throughout? i think Franson and maybe Rielly would have had to be the ones to get hurt.
plus, not just one or two injuries...more like 2 or 3 before we'd see callups.
i was starting to think the Friday breakfast bunch had the stomach for trading Gardiner but not the weekend warriors
in order to trade with EDM it would have to be substantial for them to consider it i imagine.
he's physical enough, too. just gets caught out of position too often, typically because he's thinking of how he can get the puck instead of who's behind him who he should be worried about.
kinda like the knock on Ranger early in the year. except Brennan doesn't make up for it by punishing guys in front of the net or winning as many battles along the boards.
still young, and i think the players are all told to rememeber what got them there in the first place while they work on the rest of their game, so a slow learning curve doesn't scare me away from him.
it's all just optimism until they put doubt to rest, but there is a pretty decent group to draw from this year for a couple spots and for a couple more in another year's time.
D'Amigo, Ashton, Ryan, Hartikainen, Holland (and what would a full year of Bolland-Clarkson could accomplish together in a shutdown role with some help). Komarov?
Broll, Biggs, Carrick, Devane, Ross (hopeful, right?)
ultimately, we need to do more and hope they work out.
how about Gardiner to EDM for the 3rd pick?
is there any deal that could be made there?
people want those young centres (Bennett, Reinhart are those guys this year) and i still want to pick at #8
i think our defense group needs to improve and even if Gardiner plays well he's not the solution to the rest of the top 4...and i believe Granberg and/or Percy will fit in there in a year's time.
depends on the message and depends on the the rest of the roster.
what's the point in sitting player A if player B is no better, unless you decide to bring up the kids to start taking jobs (and that's one way).
but our team now has committed to not rushing prospects along just to help out the big club. when Burns was in town, Eastwood and Manderville were already young veterans playing behind the influence of guys like Foligno and Krusher.
sitting Gilmour to play Berg or Zezel isn't the same as dumping JVR for Leivo or Lupul for Ashton. or Kessel for Raymond or whatever.
i think the coach's tool right now has been "your contract is up at the end of the year, who wants to come back"
a team that already has a solid top 4 could use Brennan i think.
i'd focus our money on the top 4 and if Brennan wants to sign to play here cheap, then maybe there's a fit...it might depend on when he gets the first good offer from another team and where we're at in our decision making.

as good a goal scorer i've seen based on that 6 minutes
@Burtonboy @dlb meh
that's how i feel too
they've spent the entire year harping on the same things. things are more impactful on me when they suddenly take information and switch their stance because they realize it doesn't support what they want it to.
we have to remember that Leafs team was full of veterans top to bottom. this Leafs team has a different makeup. we just finished a year where benching a player might mean replacing him with the 7th guy on the organization's depth chart in that position.
i've made it half way through, and i've lost interest.
there's no perspective. it doesn't account for players coming in or out of the lineup, or changing roles, or anything other than what they want it to.
Kulemin alone can explain the counter arguement. when he had his great year everything was rosey. he didn't repeat and the coach didn't change right away.
did the PPP article collect information from interviews that we haven't heard before? or did they try to proove an opinion about something they have no inside information on?
goaltending has got ot be 80% of winning. a couple months ago i would have said half.
compare there bottom 6 with our bottom 6 and i think it might reveal the answer. who's got the list?
55 seconds in or so. #40. whatev lol
amazing goal? lol
kids do that in Novice. and, goalies save that shot in Novice and that never makes the highlights.
what a crwod.
they don't measure mph, what rubbish

@Jmessih @Leafs rule
on tv or stream or what
if Shanny decides some of the guys aren't the right guys, perhaps that's an option.
for example, maybe he thinks Bolland and Clarkson are the leaders we do need and Lupul is offered. or Phanuef is not the leader and he's offered. or Clarkson. or Kessel. notice i said yes and no to Clarkson to show i'm just picking names....
it would be nice if Reimer, Franson, Gunnarsson and others who we don't feel we're building around could be worth those top 10 picks, but it's real unlikely eh
what do you mean?
coming back like that shouldn't impress you though really. it's kinda expected as a minimum effort when you've got that speed.
how is he doing on the battles along the boards on the breakout? (serious question, not sarcasm)
i saw him almost block a shot, now that impressed me.
