One of the best in the league from in close
@Denied @Nikhil Daljeet
To be expected TBH, since anyone that plays 20+ in the big league and puts up a PPG is probably super fit. But it's nice to dispel the "if only Kessel was in better shape" nonsense

Frats going to make it tough to keep him out of the lineup
Obviously over the course of the season lines will be all over the place, but in an ideal world where everyone is healthy and for many of the reasons Anthony listed above I'd like to see:
Lupul-Bozak-Kessel (17 mins, heavy OZ starts)
JVR-Kadri-Clarkson (17 mins, 2-way)
Booth-Holland-Santorelli (14 mins, 2-way)
Winnik-Kontiola-Komarov (11 mins, DZ starts)
Good teams stack their first powerplay unit with their most dangerous players, so I'd like to see a first PP unit of JVR-Kadri-Kessel but I doubt we will see that. Players like JVR, Kessel, Kadri, and Lupul will see extra time via PP (and in JVR's case, the PK). Players like Winnik and Komarov will also be closer to 13 mins due to PK contributions. This should spread out ice time evenly with the appropriate players getting more but nobody getting as much as JVR, Kessel and Bozak did last season.
In terms of the ES lineup, I see potential for Kontiola as a RW on the JVR-Kadri line (can take RH draws for Nazem, works best with skilled players) but I also doubt we will see that. Santorelli could also fill a similar role and I do think the coaching staff would consider that if Clarkson flops and Booth/Santorelli don't show exceptional chemistry.

Yeah I can't believe it's been more than a decade since the Leafs lost to Roenick in Game 6. I was there in person and it was a tough loss but I never imagined having to wait so long to see us in the playoffs again. Then I witnessed Game 7 against the Bruins in person as well and I realized I should stop going to Leafs playoff elimination games

Would have been cool to see him with Gorges on his left. As you mentioned, letting Dion be a little more offensive like he used to would have been nice for him. Can't see it happening unless they put him on the left with Robidas or Polak (who probably shouldn't be seeing heavy minutes).Gorges-PhaneufGardiner-RobidasRielly-PolakAnyways, who knows what they will try with this group. Interested to see as well

2 weeks, 2 days ago on Will Randy Carlyle Change?
If the number is above 1, it means the Leafs gave up more a higher rate of shots against from that particular spot on the ice. The colorr coding helps, as the redder it is, the higher rate of shots against from that area. Under Wilson, we had a lot of numbers near 1 (slightly below, slightly above). These are all the faint blue or faint red colours. Means it was close enough to the league average that it isn't statistically different. But under Carlyle, we get lit up from most areas, with the highest ones being at the point (a la Cherry) and in front of the net, but with improvement needed across the board.
Thanks Wiski. Been busy. Liked your ice challenge vid!

3 weeks, 6 days ago on Thursday Mashup: Getting closer
Low risk moves like these are fantastic. Can't be more motivated as a player, cost effective, and adds depth up and down the lineup in case injuries hit. Booth was on my short list of hopeful gambles before the off season started. Not with the expectations that he comes close to his old ways or even hits 20 goals, but I like him as a hard working, physical bottom six player that will drive the net and has a great attitude to boot. Can play up and down the lineup if injuries necessitate it.Some saw it as laughable when Shanaban & co. targeted "character" going into the offseason because that's a vague concept that can so easily go awry. But they've put their stock in the right guys in Komarov, Santorelli, Robidas and now Booth in that respect. Watching teams like Columbus, Tampa (last year) and Detroit (without their stars) make the playoffs in the East - you know nightly hard work, determination and speed can go a long way.
2 months, 1 week ago on Leafs sign David Booth to a 1-year, $1.1 million contract
Great signing. Santorelli can play all three positions, adding versatility and depth to the roster. More importantly he works his ass off every single shift. Adding three competitive, 100% effort guys in Komarov, Robidas and Santorelli should go a long way into setting the tone for this club and making sure some of the more skilled players keep their effort level more consistent (looking at you Lupul).

Yeah I think it played into his decision. Sounds like we were pretty close
@Mind Bomb @Nikhil Daljeet
Hey Darren, couldn't agree more, a ton of terrifying contracts were handed out. Can you imagine the reaction here if Nonis did what Washington did today? I definitely like all three signings for that reason. Helps set the tone for the rest of the guys too. Robidas and Komarov especially are super competitive.
Good to hear that they were in on Brian Boyle. He was third on my wish list today after Komarov and Robidas. Would have made me 3 for 3 on the day. But I did not see that Frattin trade coming!Also, I would have preferred Gorges over Polak but since we have Polak I'm glad we didn't also make the move for Gorges. I'm not opposed to moving Franson whatsoever, but having two d-men that have no offensive game in the lineup at the same time would have been overcompensation - from too many puck movers to too many defensive d-men. That's why Robidas is such a good add. He's great defensively but also makes smart decisions with the puck and has a nice outlet pass. He also has a solid point shot and should get a look or two on the PP especially if injuries happen. But he definitely doesn't use it as much as he used to. As long as he's healthy he'll be great. He'll also make sure everyone else sees what it means to work your ass off and sacrifice for the team. Komarov too.
He's good at skating.
3 months ago on Maple Leafs Trade Carl Gunnarsson, 4th round pick for Roman Polak
@Cameron19 @Nikhil Daljeet @mr_hanie
Did you see him take the ice with Leopold? Polak can skate the puck out of trouble, and can handle the physical side of things, but suffers when it comes to his outlet pass and has no accuracy on his shot. His partner Leopold is weak in all aspects of the game at this point in his career but especially with puck management. Leopold is on his way out after this contract runs out or possibly even shipped in a trade before then.
Compare that to playing with Gardiner (or even Rielly), who is the type of player that Blues fans have always wanted Polak to actually be paired with due to his strengths complementing Polak's game.
@loomx @Nikhil Daljeet @Cameron19 @mr_hanie
And that's why I'm still hoping we sign a guy like Stralman. Not that he's #2 material, but he is a top four d-man that can help spread the load of heavy minutes with Phaneuf and Gardiner.
I don't think anyone is disagreeing with this.
They are better than him. But we don't have Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk. The only point I had was that on the current Leafs he could be a 2nd pairing guy given the set of players that we have. He will complement Gardiner's game.
The ideal situation would have been to have both Gunnar and Polak, with Polak on the bottom pairing. But we don't.
He could play 2nd pairing and PK easily on the Leafs. He was stuck behind Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk on the right side for the Blues.
@lukethenuke @Nikhil Daljeet
I think Boyle has some merit as a sheltered RD and quality PP guy. But do we need that with Rielly and Franson? If we get rid of Franson, I could see them making the move but doesn't seem like it'd be worth the cost.
Fayne would be a nice add.
Hope we make a strong push for Stralman. 4 x 5 years or 4.5 x 4 years should get it done.
Good LD-RD setup and the top two pairings would work well together. Who knows what will happen on the third pairing with Franson, Gleason, Grannberg, etc. in the mix.
Not likely to happen - but it'd be nice.

Wins are not a tiebreaker. Jets beat us in our games against each other and hold the tiebreaker. As long as we lose and Van gets 3/4 from Cal and Edm, we can get 7th pick.

Seems fitting that the Bruins will have the chance to finish us off for good. We're catching them on the second night of their back to back and then have four very winnable games to finish off the year. Not over until it's over
