@dlb, just dlb @Omac13 I want draft picks and I want to see 2 or more Leaf prospects on the Canadian national junior team.  And 3 or 4 on other junior teams.  Am happy to wait 3 or 4 years for players to develop.  Our pipeline remains thin with only 3 or so players that will have any chance at impacting at NHL level.

Dump:  Phaneuf, Kessel, Lupul, Winnick, Booth, Santorelli, Bozak, JVR, Franson,  Riemer or Bernier...get young and get picks.  In the offseason, sign two or 3 UFAs that are like Winnick...cheap $1million guys you can throw to the wolves for a year or two till the team grows into its new found youth.  Along the way get your 1C and get a top 5 pick in 2016.  Then commit to developing for the cup.

@kxbarillas @Mind Bomb Ummm whats to tear apart?  If Franson, Santorelli, Winnick, Lupul were traded away would you consider that tearing it apart?  Or additionally if Kessel were traded away would that be a tear down?  Not in the slightest, all are over paid or expendable and all will get a return.  It seems most do not get that if you trade someone you get something back of value.

Shanahan could do a rebuild, he does not have to go to the board, and if he felt he had too...fire Shanahan.  Gutless wimp.  Just do whats right and screw what Rogers, Bell thinks...Im sure Shanahans contract has a pretty darn generous payout.

@MaxwellHowe Well the alternative is the status quo and frankly I cannot see their viewer ship going up with this product.  A rebuild brings in change, new faces, new hope and that draws in people.  Its just a form of reality TV and people like change on reality TV and twists.  So a rebuild will increase ratings, viewership.

Trade Winnick, Santorelli in the next week...that drives losses up.  Move Lupul out asap upon his return before he gets hurt again and get a pick.  Unload Franson asap as well to drive losses up and get another first rounder.  Then wait till summer and deal with Phaneuf, Kessel and maybe even Clarkson.

As far as press impact on the team.  The press have far less negative impact if the Leafs actually try their best and/or win.  Its because the Leafs have been brutal that the press are this negative all the time.  the Leafs do not deserve positive press.  I think its just fine that guys like Feschuk call things out even if they are not politically correct.  Even Simmons being negative is just fine by me...mind you I don't listen to any of them so it doesn't affect me like it seems to affect you guys.  Lay all the negative press on the Leafs you can until the guys work their ass off on the ice to the best of their abilities or you start winning.

@Cameron19 @peterbleafs @Dogger No you cant because eventually you have Nylander, Kadri etc...Franson is a #3,4 at best...no way you can afford to pay him that.  In a few years you have to think about locking up Rielly. Cap space means everything in the next 3 to 4 years.  And no you cant easily achieve that at all...unless you dump everyone else.

@Mitch92 @peterbleafs @Dogger The one thing none of us really know is how badly individual players want to win a cup here.  I think the only judgement on Franson would be how bad he wants to win...and only the coach, GM and Shanahan really know that...or they darn well better know that.

@sadleaf I want two picks in the top 12 or so of this years draft.  If we don't get Strome we get Zacha or Crouse, if we get Crouse then Nylander slots in at C...if we get Strome maybe Nylander is a W. There will be a high quality player drift down like a Barzal type and would be great to add one more high end talent.

This is why unloading more than less is more valuable before the deadline...to ensure the 5th pick or so plus get another high end pick.  The 1C is more valuable than Kessel or Phaneuf ever will be....so get him...doesn't have to be Eichel or McDavid.

@Burtonboy @Forever17 Thats because its practically impossible to do.  Id be happy for the deadline to see Santorelli, Winnick and Franson dealt.  That alone ensures a drop in standings.

@ProfessorRance @peterbleafs I was embarrassed he made the team...he played minutes but really didnt contribute a whole lot.  He is a lousy puck handler, weak skater and for his size didnt seem to push people around much.  But thats my opinion of him

A good barometer is having players at the WJC.  We had Gauthier (large useless pylon), Valiev, who was top four for Russia so some upside and he is big, Nylander who could be a superstar depending on mindset and intangibles.

Leafs should have 5 to 6 in the WJC and they need to be at the top of the roster on their respective teams.  Crouse, Strome etc...get that.

@Mattmark Kypreos the intellect.  The Leafs will have one pick in the first 64 picks this offseason.  If you think you can start a rebuild process with that, youre at the back of the classroom with Kypreos.  The Leafs must collect 3 more picks in the top 60 at least before draft day.  And they must get in the top 5 in order to start any quality rebuild.

Sitting on your hands and waiting till the offseasons guarantees none of that happens.  The Leafs will go minimum 500 hockey for the rest of the season.  Unless they are kept in turmoil and that means players here to be shipped outta here regularly.....3 to 4 of them at least by the deadline.

@Sexyhairyman @peterbleafs I sort of look at it as a single trade:  All those guys for the certainty of a 1C (Strome) and a lot of good quality prospects in the system.  Given that we retain Kadri, Rielly, Nylander and add a Strome plus plus plus means we are well underway.  Guys like Carrick, Smith, Percy, Finn, Leivo, Brown also arent going anywhere so we are okay to continue developing our roster.

If we do not make the deals now, there is a high likelihood the team stays around the 8 to 10 draft slot and that is completely unacceptable this season now.

@Sexyhairyman @peterbleafs There is only 37 games left this year, they can spend the year in the NHL and learn some systems.  Wont ruin anyone.  Tavares played on shitty NYI team for a while..he is just fine.

I think the Leafs should not wait too long to move players and moving them in the summer will decrease yield.  If you want to move Kessel, move him now.  The goal here has to be to get the cap hits down big time while we are bringing future young stars along so there is space to sign them properly when the time comes.

Dump:  Kessel, Franson, Santorelli, Booth, Winnick, Bozak, JVR ...all of these guys can be moved with a net reduction in next years cap big time.

Phaneuf would be way harder to remove and reduce cap space.  I want him traded too because to me it is obvious his team mates are not enamoured with him.

Gardiner should be easy to move for net reduction of cap hit as well.

OUt of it we should be able to land 3 or 4 !st and 2nd draft picks in this draft as well as 2 or 3 high quality prospects and maybe one or two salary adjusted NHL players who can just fill spots on the ice for a while.

So get picks, get prospects and get cap space...

We actually need to drop in the standings to get to at least Dylan Strome as he is a potential 1C.  Cannot bank on lottery so Strome has to be the target.

Montreal is at the top with only two elite talents on the ice...Price and Subban.  Everyone else is tier 2 at best including Pacioretty...now Galchenyuk may be come elite in a few years but he sure isnt now.  So why are they so far ahead of us with just those two assets standing out?

Because everyone on their team works hard, has talent, buys in and wants to win.  You do not need a true 1C to be elite and to win the cup.  Even Kopitar only emerged the past few years, before that he was just good.

Our talent level is not the problem it is, always has been, and will be the net work ethic of our players and their net lack of commitment to winning via the hard road.

Players who will play through the hard choices are:   Kadri, Rielly, Lupul, Clarkson, Komarov.  Anyone else???
