@Bruffins JVR should be paired with Kadri if Kadri starts playing like a leader...JVR is the one element of the top line that is trainable I think...Bozak and Kessel feel they are invincible and inseparable.

@Mind Bomb kadri is doing fine but Id like to see him assume leadership of the top two lines...lord knows bozak isnt and neither is kessel. I want to see him paste a few stiffs, get into a fight and draw a few penalties and then score a goal or two. But it starts with Kadri playing with a nasty attitude.

@sniperstar @peterbleafs Goalie was definitely off his game, he never came out to cut down angles on any of them...and Halak is an excellent goalie, who had a very bad game. 3 of the 5 he would have normally stopped...but at the other end Bernier was in fact very lucky as well as good...there should have been a few more goals at least by the Islanders.

@ingy56 @Great Dane @peterbleafs RC did play Holland and Panik a fair amount more in the 3rd it seemed and they did some good things. So it was a chance to run up their ice time. But the long and short of it is Shanahan needs to start the retooling starting with moving out the coach (although I think he is less of a problem this year) and to be honest the real problem is our number one line never hits, never forechecks hard and hardly ever back checks...they set the tone for lines 2 and 4...Line 3 has assumed the leadership of this team...so kudos to them.
Unless Bozak Kessel and JVR start to really lead in all areas of the game I say split them up or move some of them out.

Fun game because we won by a margin for a change. Cant say I am impressed with the Leafs after that game sincce the Islanders just got shitty goal tending and Bernier was very very good.

@Burtonboy Hunter now has the GM spot the minute Nonis blows it or Hunter has proven to Shanahan he has the skills.

Good move by Shanahan hiring Mark Hunter...that guy is solely responsible for the Knights constant success both on and off the ice. Terrific hire!!!!
@Burn_the_Loov_Boats @peterbleafs I dont think he is bad at all...I think the coach has no idea how to use him.
2 days, 9 hours ago on Monday Mashup: Taking on the toughs
@Yaknowwhat Nine minutes a game times 80 games a year is 720 minutes or 6 hours of true live practice per season...geezus that is not a lot of learning going on. At 3 minutes a game these guys are getting paid a million bucks for 2 hours of intense work per year.
@Yaknowwhat That is true, using Holland as a 4C is really kind of stupid. Now if your purpose is for him to learn defense then great do it for a while. But then ffs teach the defense and the systems and give them at least 9 minutes a game.
@Yaknowwhat Im tired of Jeff ONeal...wish he would go away

He is right...the Leafs succeed if and only if their mood is right, and their approach to the game happens to be one the other team has trouble defending...there is no design to the leafs game for the opposition. Hell they cant even handle one style let alone adapt.
@MaxwellHowe A phil esposito would never succeed nowadays either.
@MaxwellHowe Not possible for an Orr to exist today, all the players are too skilled. Back then most were small time compared to todays athletes size and speed.
@Conis Islanders are a really good team and they seem to have found an early rythym

@Cloud09 @TheLoovTrain Yeah the two worst defensive guys on our team and they put them together. I do not need to know any advanced stats to know those two as a pair is a recipe for disaster at some point. But for now, do not care....Carlyle is running out his rope and like always the leadership (Shanahan) will hang him after the season is all but lost. Its the same hymn at the same church...just a new pastor in town.
@dlb Mad Definitely he is worth developing and keeping for the long term...but I do not think anyone should try and anoint him Niedermeyer Jr. ... let him work his way in. I want to see him develop some finish this year.
@dlb Mad You know I was starting to think the same thing. I watched a bit of the Winnipeg game last night and this Jacob Trouba seems to be more powerful, more aggressive and offensively gifted than Rielly. Maybe the Leaf hype is again unwarranted.
@LyGuy And tell Phaneuf to hang back.
3 days, 12 hours ago on Game Review: Game #6, Red Wings 1 vs. Maple Leafs 0 (OT)
@Leafs2 Isles1 @peterbleafs @B_Leaf @Cameron19 Id trade PHaneuf but not till next offseason. Also Franson...Matt Finn will be the next Percy. Keep Robidas next year and Polak. If Gardiner does not take the next defensive step this year, then move him out.
@Cameron19 @peterbleafs @Jay_Berg In the press yes,,, but if Kessel goes to his local starbucks I bet its all love and adoration.
3 days, 14 hours ago on Game Review: Game #6, Red Wings 1 vs. Maple Leafs 0 (OT)
@B_Leaf @Cameron19 Still a good team. Just not organized correctly. Once Carlyle is gone, this team will do far better.
@Cameron19 @Jay_Berg Not really torn apart..thats the media garbage. I think the players in public still get revered. These guys have lots of money but not enough commitment to winning.
I think if you intend to roll 4 lines you darn well roll four lines every single game and if there is a shortcoming on one line, you work them through it or you mix up the players....In this NHL with this many back to backs...it is not possible to get into the playoffs with 3 lines..it is a formula for fading at the end of the season,
3 days, 16 hours ago on Game Review: Game #6, Red Wings 1 vs. Maple Leafs 0 (OT)
@Yaknowwhat Panik Winnick Ashton....theres a 4th line with size speed and some responsibility towards defense
@Yaknowwhat BECAUSE HE PLAYS 3 MINUTES A NIGHT
3 days, 17 hours ago on Game Review: Game #6, Red Wings 1 vs. Maple Leafs 0 (OT)
@Yaknowwhat You didnt sleep enough, go back to bed
@Knights2Leafs @Yaknowwhat The few times Holland was put in an offensive spot with a decent linemate or two he started to assert himself offensively.
@Yaknowwhat Winnick would be the center and holland would be on the wing next to Kadri
@Yaknowwhat No the reasoning is the Leafs have enough good players to man four decent lines so put the players in the right spot.
Leafs will flop again this year. Already Carlyle refuses to organize his lines so he can go with 4 lines. Carlyle needs to be fired.. I do not care if they played well (and they did). Unless you roll 4 lines you end up losing and likely finishing just out of the playoffs. Maybe they think David Booth will save the day for that...but now....RC go F.....ly a kite
@Great Dane I dont think it is our forwards save maybe some more forced commitment to defense. Wehave a good group of forwards...so switching out any of them will not change. We also have two good goalies. It is our defence that is the problem. If we intend to shake this team up, you trade Phaneuf and Franson...but bring in at least one more conservative veteran...no one flashy just someone like a Mike Weaver type guy.
4 days, 12 hours ago on Game 5 Scoring Chances: DET 4 vs. TOR 1
@Cameron19 @Yan28 I watched one game with Leivo and thought he was the worst player on the ice for both teams.
@cryptotho I think we are in good shape....except I think the core problem is actually the defensive play of Franson and Phaneuf. Neither box out, neither does the little things well in their own end. Gardiner, Rielly and Percy and all teachable...Phaneuf and Franson are not.
@Jordan29 @peterbleafs @Cameron19 HOw is that working out for Edmonton? They suck with years of top draft picks. Florida has sucked for years with top picks and they also still suck.
@Cameron19 You could trade those guys and still we cant be as bad as Buffalo and florida are intending to be. So it does nothing at the end of the season...no McDavid or Eichel. My concern is just who on this team is the problem....the team has a motivation issue somewhere. Kadri was benched a big part of the 3rd period and I did think he wasnt trying as hard as he should.
I dont get why they partner Rielly with Gardiner. It would be better to have one with Percy and the other with Polak.
Looks like its another one of those seasons with effort determined by a crap shoot of whatever motivates our guys.
I actually thought the Leafs played okay last night. And it seemed the Red Wings just struck fast with quick goals when the Leafs made a mistake. But that is what Zetterberg does best. But as the game wore on we lost any mojo we started with.
@Burtonboy Means basically he is a complete flop and we want to move him out of sight so no one reminds us how bad a draft pick he was.

@ingy56 If the above photo'd dumbass would bench his stars for not playing defence he could actually win. Eakins has again proven he is a bonehead, a Wilson clone.
@traNsplantEdneWfie @dlb Mad Never
6 days, 15 hours ago on Wednesday Mashup: Back to .500
@Xxxxxnew They wont trade him...this is just Dreger trying to get his name mentioned as often as possible or maybe Nonis told him to say something to get the ideas traction in Carolina...ie their fan blogs would comment and what they think of dumping Staal for futures....Its an effective strategy. But really unless the fans of Carolina support it, the management there will not do it.
1 week ago on Game Review: Game #4, Toronto Maple Leafs 3 vs. Colorado Avalanche 2 (OT)
Leafs played wonderfully last night, was a great game. But did it with 3 lines only...that just isnt sustainable for very long. Cannot knock Carlyle for doing it last night, since the Leafs played so well. But rolling 4 lines is necessary to sustain success in this league and I do not think Carlyle cares about that much.
@Mind Bomb RCs old habits remain...and the team cannot sustain its great play. We outshot them but that is simply because Colorado and New York do not have their shit together as yet. Pittsburgh and Montreal do. That 4th line is pretty good on paper and they play with energy, therefore they ought to be doing better, but never can improve at 3 minutes a game.
@Forever17 @Black_Hawk @FRyan If staal is on the market the leafs will do the wrong deal...they will trade Kadri, 1st next year or Nylander from this year and Gardiner. When the right deal is Bozak, Gardiner and maybe prospect like Brown or Leivo.
@FRyan Who cares, he is so expendable.....was never needed, a really dumb signing by the Leafs.
@Great Dane @Black_Hawk Lupul is defensively poor, Kadri is good, just not strong enough on faceoffs.
1 week, 1 day ago on Leafs Notebook – October 14
@Great Dane aka Kessel, Bozak, Lupul, Gardiner, Phaneuf any other lousy defensive players?
