I remember Dale Tallon signing a bunch of free agent forwards, a few years back, just to reach the cap floor. They surprised and made the playoffs. Seems Leafs signing a bunch of free agent forwards too.

Carter Ashton has to score points to make it in the NHL. He is not a good defensive forward. He is a great AHL player, but seems to go where the puck has left, not where the puck is going to go, at the NHL level.

Winnik gives Leafs PK depth, something Ashton cannot do.

Seeing talent live is still important as far as I am concerned. Scouting is important and that will never change. I am still hoping Shanahan steals some Detroit and Boston scouts

Looks like lots of internal politics going on with the assistant coaching decisions. Carlyle does not want any-one to threaten his job. Hiring Marlies coaches seems safe for Carlyle. But why the dithering ??? Just the pattern for Mr. Dithers ( Shanahan)

@MaxwellHowe Those "tear down" advocates never saw a good scouting system in action.

They remember the Ballard years of scouts, who were former players down on their luck, being hired just to collect a pay-check

Was visiting Red Wings forums and its so funny that they never talk about tanking by trading their players for high draft picks. Those fans were spoiled by the good scouting staff Detroit has had over the past 25 years. They are confident that the scouts will always find players in the 2 or 3rd rounds.
