Big day for the Marlies! We play Rochester at 3pm and if we beat them and Hamilton and Adirondack lose (both playing playoff teams) we will be in 8th place! LETS GO MARLIES!

I think you are misled. RC did his best to keep the line up above .500. He coached the team to its strengths (key word). They got away with some wins but obviously the style of play is not sustainable over an 82 games season + playoffs (some might disagree though, just look at MTL). They made PH the interim because they knew he would bring in the style of play that he learned in his years behind Preds bench. As soon as this happened the smoke screen disappeared and the true nature of the team (hypothesized by many) was revealed. We have a line up of a bunch of pond hockey players that would rather cherry pick for goals than play a team defensive game.

and then flip them at the trade deadline for picks. This is what we should have been doing since 2006. Too bad we just learned our lesson this season. So many UFAs that we let walk for free *face palm*

Dude, your whole ideology is wrong. This is exactly what people say the Leafs should avoid doing. We HAVE to keep our young players in the AHL for 3 -4 years to let them grow. There is no point in bringing up prospects to play on a tanking team. That is not "NHL" experience. That is "Losing" experience, just look at Edmonton. Also what vets will surround these players? We need vets that lead by example not by the size of their contract.

@Bring the Cup Home The key to developing the young prospects is to create a core of talented players in the AHL and have them play together for an extended period of time. If we really want to achieve the stable stream of prospects that teams like Detroit have then we have to keep our players developing on the Marlies for closer to 3-4 years if not longer in certain cases. You also hope this core can go on multiple extended playoff runs.

@TuckerForCompassion @Marleafs Does it not seem like the Leafs pressure is always gone after the trade deadline? lol Anyway, what I think I was getting at before is that the team and management is aware of the high pressure and expectations of playing in Toronto. That is why they put in extra measures to attempt to alleviate some of the extra stress. PR coaching is one of the most important ones. I have seen an immense change in Leaf player responses over the last decade. Granted, the media has changed a lot due to social media so new PR strategies are necessary.

Unfortunately the last 2 months the Leafs have beaten their own worst records so you can only assume s*** is going to hit the fan with the media, no matter how much PR coaching you receive lol This is arguable the worst time to be a Leaf fan in the history of the Leafs. Such high expectations and so much failure.

@Waiting4LSC Yea seems some of them want to become celebrities. It also has a lot to do with the players personality. Not everybody is the same. The reason Loops gets in trouble on social media is the same reason he was picked to be the assistant captain at all star game. Its also the same reason he has a charity which can gather resources via twitter. I just think it needs to be managed better and the best response to haters is just to stay quiet. No reason to add more fuel to the fire for all to see.

@TuckerForCompassion @Marleafs  1. Why do you say the pressure is more than anticipated? Rumours swirl around this team all the time. Same happened in the Sundin and Gilmour eras.

2. How is proper support not given to the players? The Leafs put a lot of resources into PR and coaching.

Pressure from media and fans isn't an excuse for poor play. How is this team (not necessarily with this the roster) ever supposed to face the pressure of a Stanley Cup final if they crumble under the weight of the media and its fan base (at least as suggested by some in the comments). The reason TSN and rest of the media makes fun of Phil and the Leafs is because we have no credibility. The Leafs are the most popular team in all of sports that hasn't don't crap in over 4 decades. Its a never ending circle (or a curse if you want to be dramatic).

What I take away from all of this:

- media will never change my perception of the Leafs. I watch the games and can think for myself.

- most members of the media think they are local celebrities. They don't care whether the news is good or bad, they just want to be the first to report it and get more follows on their twitter accounts. Their journalism is laughable.

- fans that use twitter to bad mouth players are selfish. They are just looking for their 5 seconds of fame.

- I appreciate Bob McGill and Leafs TV that much more.

@Dangle_My_Berries Social media for players can lead to a lot of positives. Consider all the charities for example. Its unfortunate that immature people use social media to blindly attack NHL players. Its just a matter of time before this type of "cyber-bullying" becomes illegal. Its not any different than a bunch of high schools kids picking on each other on Facebook.

3 weeks, 6 days ago on Deadline passes with core largely in tact

What sort of obligation do NHL players have to the media? Why even be part of that circus? Its practically impossible for Toronto players to receive a positive response from the media after an interview. If the player is drawn back the media says the player doesn't have leadership. If the player gets upset, they media thinks they want to be traded. You can't win with these guys. The media makes a story out of everything in this market. So how about the players stop feeding them? Just focus on the game.

Media is there to point out negatives. That is the main reason I have stopped watching the news.

@ninepaces I think the new organized defensive system is beneficial for Reims. Under RCs "system" there was way too much chaos in the dzone. Add in Reimers slightly unorthodox style and the dzone panic goes skyward. I found Bernier was a very comming influence in the dzone, even under RCs system, as he was able to get a lot more puck freezes then Reims. Right now Bernier is off his game so Reims + new systems is currently the better choice.

@Anthony Petrielli @Marleafs If the Leafs follow their usual trend, expect a final push after the trade deadline. Its a matter of Shanahan having the guts to throw in the towel. I hope he recognizes his inexperience in leading a team from his current position and begins a slow tear down. Has to start with our UFAs. As you said already, bigger deals in the offseason.

2 months ago on Wednesday Mashup: Back At It vs. Devils

Reply

@Anthony Petrielli Very common trend for the Leafs. We have become a "2nd opportunity" team for bottom 6 players in the league that no other team wants to sign. They make 1-2 mil for the season and get a nice raise with another team the following year. The only difference this year is that instead of losing these players for nothing in the offseason, we are actually trying to get some kind of a return for them.

@Sebastian James @Marleafs @philthethrill I still consider his numbers to be "deflated" since he was inserted into the line up at the tail end of our "hot streak". Everybody's possession numbers since then have been disastrous. I would give Holzer a few more years to develop. He will be a solid bottom pairing shut down dman.
