It's at times like this that I really hate the media in this town. They should be asking the hard questions, and there are so many of them to ask. They should be asking how many points last year are directly attributable to coaching. Why a coach whose entire coaching philosophy is "MOVE YOUR FEET' is in any way qualified to coach this team. Why the Leafs so persistently ignore statistics. Why their only response to another sub-par season is to let the front office grow another head. You never hear questions like this and I'm sick of it.

@weirdalyankadick @KenBreadner That's why I said 'if'. We need a natural center with some kind of talent. To get one, assuming Holland is one, with a piece we weren't even using, at a time when every GM in the league knows our center woes...it would be impressive.

If Holland turns into anything other than a stopgap this has to be seen as a huge win for Nonis. Even if he's a decent stopgap I'd say the Leafs win this trade simply because they address a glaring need without giving much up at all.  I used to be high on Blacker--remember him ordering Kaberle around?--but his development seriously stalled.

@peterbleafs @Armchair GM I harped on it too. I've seen too many goalies come with high hype after a stellar half season to a season...think Toskala, Vesa and Raycroft, Andrew. Some people had Bernier canonized before he ever donned the jersey.

That said, it's not THAT Bernier plays so well that is winning me over. It's HOW he is playing so well. He is calm and stable. You saw Reimer last night flopping around like a gutted fish. On two of the goals he had no idea where the puck was at all. Bernier plays so calm in the crease. It's just really impressive. I'm not ready to just *give* him the #1 role but he's pushing me that way.

@JMAC17 @4evrblue I feel bad for Reimer, I really do. He is a very good goalie who makes life very difficult for himself. Bernier seems to be a very good goalie who makes life easier, in that he's just as positionally sound but doesn't give up so many God-awful rebounds.

Last night the whole team hung Reimer out to dry, but he didn't help his cause much.

This opinion is definitely in the minority here, and I'll be dismissed as a wuss, but there was one point in the aftermath of Parros where one of the CBC heads said something like "it's all wildly entertaining until something like this happens." I cringed. No. No it's not. It's not wildly entertaining *because* things like that happen. I don't know when it was that "consequence" became a dirty word, but it (sadly) is.

@Wilbur @Doorman @KenBreadner @T K O Sorry, guys, I'm wrong, you're right. I thought Liles got concussed within a few days of the signing. Pretty boneheaded move from Burke there, then....you never know with concussions, some of them don't seem to affect a  player at all, others take a year or even longer to recover from, and some end careers...

@T K O  I seem to recall people were okay with Liles' deal when he signed it. Not great, not even good, but the reaction wasn't the same as say Bozak for $4.2.

Then he got a concussion.

So many Leaf fans give no quarter for concussions. See Lombardi, Matthew. The guy wasn't even supposed to play, but he did. Did the Leaf fan base give him kudos for trying? No. The guy got death threats. DEATH THREATS.

Liles hasn't been the same player since his concussion, which to many people is completely inexcusable. The guy was being groomed for the Avs captaincy and has always been a leader in the room. Even now his game hasn't gone completely to shit and there's every chance he'll get it back.

@B_Leaf @Tim Horton Depends on what the issue was. I heard rumours that Grabo refused to set foot on the ice towards the end of that game 7 collapse. Let the speculation begin.

@Knights2Leafs @Zep2 I'm sick and tired of people anointing goalies...Bernier has comparable stats to Reimer, but even less NHL experience. The list of goalies who looked phenomenal in their first 80 games is a long one, and it includes some familiar names such as Toskala and Raycroft. I'm not saying Bernier is that bad--he might be the best thing since goalie pads--but how people can somehow *know* he's destined for greatness is a mystery for the ages.

@RielledUp @Optimustic @Great Dane No, the thing about Lombairdi, that everybody seems to forget, is that he suffered a very, very serious concussion and he wasn't considered likely to play at all. He was the price for Franson. That he played at all was a bonus.

There is some similarity to Raymond in that he too had a serious injury. But he is much further along in recovery from it.
