It's at times like this that I really hate the media in this town. They should be asking the hard questions, and there are so many of them to ask. They should be asking how many points last year are directly attributable to coaching. Why a coach whose entire coaching philosophy is "MOVE YOUR FEET' is in any way qualified to coach this team. Why the Leafs so persistently ignore statistics. Why their only response to another sub-par season is to let the front office grow another head. You never hear questions like this and I'm sick of it.

If Holland turns into anything other than a stopgap this has to be seen as a huge win for Nonis. Even if he's a decent stopgap I'd say the Leafs win this trade simply because they address a glaring need without giving much up at all.  I used to be high on Blacker--remember him ordering Kaberle around?--but his development seriously stalled.

That said, it's not THAT Bernier plays so well that is winning me over. It's HOW he is playing so well. He is calm and stable. You saw Reimer last night flopping around like a gutted fish. On two of the goals he had no idea where the puck was at all. Bernier plays so calm in the crease. It's just really impressive. Liles hasn't been the same player since his concussion, which to many people is completely inexcusable. The guy was being groomed for the Avs captaincy and has always been a leader in the room. Even now his game hasn't gone completely to shit and there's every chance he'll get it back.

Forget about the money. Suppose you excel at whatever it is you do and in response, your manager says "we've brought in somebody with less experience than you, and we're paying him more." The assumption you would make is that (a) this person is taking your job and (b) the job you did was totally unappreciated.  Isn't it? Wouldn't you want to work some place where people actually noticed the good job you do?

@Komas Taberle @MaxwellHowe @KenBreadner Players do care what other players get, why else do you think Bozak demanded so much $? Bernier makes more than Reimer, ergo Bernier's the starter. He has less NHL experience than Reimer does and stats that are at least comparable, and you are far from the only person suggesting he's worlds better. I'm skeptical.

@Komas Taberle I really, really want to believe Bernier is that good. But I have been burned so many times by the promise of goaltending saviours and I don't want to be Bernier'd again. We've been through this and through this, but if I'm James Reimer I'm demanding a trade to anywhere that people actually pay attention. Because Nonis acted very much as if the goaltending sucked last year...

I look at Clarkson and aside from money that's going to rub some of his team-mates the wrong way and term which rubs EVERYBODY the wrong way, I like the pick-up. I haven't paid overmuch attention to Clarkson in the past; reviewing videos I see an exciting player there who should click with Kadri. If, of course, he doesn't get hurt. His stye of play does seem to produce injuries.

On D--yeah, to me and many here it was obvious this was our top area of concern and T.J. Brennan ain't gonna cut it. We need a minute muncher. And being as we're going to be scraping the cap right quick, he's going to have to come cheap.

Bozak is a bit thorny. Being Kessel's BFF, you have to wonder if letting Tyler walk means Phil walks too.

The thing about Bozak is that I believe he has all the tools to be a competent 1C buried in there somewhere. Not an elite 1C, not the 1C Kessel and Lupul deserve, but a 1C nonetheless. He's money in shootouts and he has the hands to make some slick moves. His biggest problem, as you've said, is that he forgets there's anyone else on the ice besides himself and Kessel, and sometimes he even forgets himself. How many times did he have a lane to the net and he passed off to Phil?

All in all, I'd prefer he disappear, especially if he's looking for Grabovski money.I'd rather he not move down the depth chart because (a) he won't produce and (b) he'll mope about not playing with Phil.
