@Cameron19 Jumbo would properly prefer to stay away from the North-East. I doubt that he would waive for Leafs
4 days, 14 hours ago on Maple Leafs invite Henrik Tallinder and Brendan Mikkelson to training camp
@Cameron19 I would say the reverse Thornton + keep salary for Lupul
@Burtonboy @Loric76 @ Keon BB - if want to get top players we need to move very good pieces ourself.
That is why I believe that Lupul could be on the move.
Packaging Franson and Lupul we are talking a top line player in the return. Hope fully a center.
@ Keon I concur. Think you can rule out Reimer due to the fact that nothing is happening on the goalie side.
But with the number of forwards and d-men something has to give. Franson most be the prime candidate together with Lupul.

“We want to be a four-line team. We want our fourth line to be able to
play significant minutes a night. We want to have the depth to push each
other.” Nonis in the Star.
Now my question is how is this going to work out with Carlyle running three lines - just asking
5 days, 11 hours ago on Spencer Abbott signs one-year deal
@sniperstar you wait - it will be only a matter of time
6 days, 14 hours ago on Spencer Abbott signs one-year deal
Simmons has obviously received a leak from management regarding Carlyle. Window is less than 40 games, so we are talking around Christmas.
I doubt that Carlyle can change and SA is not going to drop below 30 per game, so there we are
6 days, 19 hours ago on Spencer Abbott signs one-year deal
@Cameron19 In all honesty we are talking marginal upgrades overall. Moving Gunnar for Polak is IMO a downgrade. It would have been much better for the team to push Gunnar down to the second pairing.
At center we are hardly any better. Neither Kadri or Bozak are defensive juggernauts that can keep the opposition at bay. Therefore I find it difficult to believe that we are going to reduce the shots against a lot. Just getting to low 30'ties will be a challenge.
As painful as it is to admit, it will be a difficult season

@Burtonboy Looks to me like a Gardiner/Rielly to Kessel set up play on RW. On the LW I am not certain who could do that.
1 week ago on Dave Nonis on TSN Radio
@Burtonboy That would be about time, don't you thnk
@Cameron19 @LeafsGuru @B_Leaf @philthethrill That was spectacular bad asset management
@Burtonboy I can't imagine that this is going to go well.
@CanuckUKinToronto Back already ;-) - good
@Burtonboy not talking about Rielly but the stuff that flows out of Carlyle
1 week, 1 day ago on Sunday Mashup: ‘Legends Row’ a great gesture, ‘Fan Fest’ goes septic
@Burtonboy Is there anyone else than me that find that statement terrifying????
@MaxwellHowe @Burtonboy Did you think that Carlyle would change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As Cam said: Injuries to a few key players and we are doomed. Especially with RC behind the bench
@sniperstar @Great Dane @Xxxxxnew Well you have to give some respect to Stars to pull off those two deals.
@Cameron19 Cam, Leafs need to turn Lupul and Franson into other assets right now. Moving them and Reimer for the right pieces would be a huge step in the right direction.
@Xxxxxnew And rightly so. If we still had Sundin this team would be close to being a contender.
Leafs desperately need one or two work horses down the middle. With Kadri we would be covered from 1-3.
I am still wondering how Dallas got Seguin and Spezza in less that two full seasons!!!!!!!!
@Cameron19 @Burtonboy well - then we get McDavid if they fall upon Bernier
@Burtonboy @Cameron19 @mcloki @Great Dane Phaneuf or Carlyle ROFL.
Sorry BB, couldn't help myself
@Cameron19 @Alec Brownscombe The main conclusion from this chart is that fact that Leafs got worse in all parts of the ice. Phaneufs side or not.
Especially in the middle sector of the ice there is a huge increase in shots.
My question is how can that change with the same head coach in place?
Leafs are facing some very existential questions this season
The Carlyle effect
How big have coaching/system effects been on Dion Phaneuf the past couple of years? Check out these charts. pic.twitter.com/llg3czbAhB
@CanuckUKinToronto @Burtonboy @ingy56 We are awfully thin on the back end. If Gardiner and Reilly do not progress or Phaneuf plus one of them goes down with injury we are going down fast
1 week, 4 days ago on Thursday Mashup: Getting closer
@Loric76 This is not good. Not at all
BB posted about Kontiola belowand I just wanted add a comment.
Kontiola is of course not Kovalchuk, but last season Kovalchuk scored 2.4 points/60 and Kontiola 2.34/60.
Kovalchuk played for a top team (SKA) while Kontiola played for a team that didn't make the playoff (Traktor).
Kontiola might be a bit better than many expect
@Sexyhairyman @Great Dane @dlb Mad I am not complaining about that.
Reilly and Johnson both had health problems and dropped to us. That is OK
1 week, 5 days ago on Thursday Mashup: Getting closer
@Cameron19 @Great Dane @dlb Mad Has that been decided already. Might be better that he stays a year more in Sweden.
Then he would probably be quite certain to get the 2nd line RW next season
@dlb Mad It surprises me a bit with the takeoff AJ have had in the last season. In first season after getting drafted AJ had comparable stats to some pretty good Swedish forwards like Zetterberg. Only one he couldn't match was Peter Forsberg.
He might not be ready yet, but he could surprise in camp and take the second line RW position.
@Burtonboy Thanks BB - good to be back. Still very concerned about our beloved Leafs. Two injuries to key players and we could have big troubles.
After the end of 2nd period Anders Johnson has 1 goal and 1 assist. 11 points in 3 games so far.
@The_Polish_Cannon @MaxwellHowe the contract still counts in the 50 allowed contracts
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Jake Gardiner Signs for 5 years, $20.25 million
@Burtonboy Then I am certain that Leiweke can start finding the check book.
IF and I say IF this happens, then the likelyhood of Subban and Stamkos coming home to Toronto in 2016 suddenly increased dramatically.
On Subban from QMI
"Negotiations between the Canadiens and Subban did not go very well,"
Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports said Tuesday. "Is it possible that Subban
should go to arbitration? I think so.
"On the contrary, would I call this possibility happening better than 50%? No, but it is still there."
If Subban and the Habs had to go to arbitration, the consequences could be very sad.
"If Subban should go to arbitration, this is probably his last
contract with the Canadiens," Lavoie said. "Afterwards, it is obvious
that he will look elsewhere.
@MaxwellHowe We miss Nylander and Abbott and we have 52 under contract but 3 on a slide contract (Gauthier, Verhaeghe, Vasiliev).
But to me it looks like a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 deal is coming up
@Cameron19 I think a lot have changed in the draft - completely new approach
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
Anthony, this is one of your Top 5 blogs - thanks.
I would like to put this into a more strategic perspective. In my view Shanahan have given the support that Nonis needed and basicially eliminated the influence of Carlyle on the long term development of the team. Carlyle is now without the "old-timers" to support him.
Furthermore, I believe this is only part one of Shanahans strategic plan for the Leafs. The bottom 6 is relative easy to fix as mentioned by AP and Mirtle, but it is also the foundation on which your build to attract top players.
This season and the following season will be used to build a team that could support an arrival of one or two star players like Subban, Stamkos or Tavares.
To be honest since the draft where the Leafs took Nylander it has been one string good moves from Shanahan and Nonis. I do not believe that the team will be a play-off team this season, there are still too many holes in the line-up to fill or have players grow into.
Longer term if the Leafs don't panic and stick to the plan I believe Shanahan have put forward, the future have not looked better for the Leafs since the 98-99 season
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Brendan Shanahan Addresses Depth, Not Core of Toronto Maple Leafs
@Loric76 @Cameron19 But was bound to happen. No team can survive a 82 game season being out shot with 6-8 shots on average.
@Cameron19 @Mcost61 The capital mistake last season and this obviously is linked to Raymond and Kulemin, was management and many in Leafs nation were living a dream. Leafs had already had one break down over November and December, so they should liquidated all the players that they wouldn't extend and sign the rest.
A capital mistake from management
@DeclanK It is not up yet - are you playing us
@Mind Bomb @ingy56 @DeclanK Well then Subban must have signed it LOL
Just listen to the interview Dec posted.
PK is just to well spoken, he would having the MSM dancing to his tune all night long.
@The_Polish_Cannon @KesselJVR Habs wouldn't do either. Subban will only get to Toronto as an UFA
According to cap geek Leafs has 24 players under contract for a total cap hit of 65.9 million leaving about 3 million to sign Gardiner.
Then Leafs would still have to demote 2 players to get down to 23
@Yaknowwhat It will not be high picks for a number of picks.
@Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs @Burtonboy I think this is a plan from the hands of Shanahan to maximum picks for the next draft.
@Burtonboy Now the real question is how many will be traded
@Yaknowwhat I think that you can include Lupul in that list.
@DeclanK @dlb Mad @TheCanucksnaphook I look at this as more to protect our prospects. Leafs are still not good enough up the middle.
Do I maintain that most of the new players are sign and trade players that will give Shanahan a boat load of picks in the next draft.
