@Burtonboy The real problem is that core - captain and coach are the same.  The support cast has been fixed.

@felixjvd So true - not a problem to win when everything is going your way. Any slight adversity and this sink like a rock.

Coach - Captain - Core -  The 3C problem of this team

This is getting very tiring to watch. The core continues to be the problem together with Carlyle. The top line is not a top line and the captain can't pull his weight and change the tune of his team.

@Alec Brownscombe @Cameron19 I am just annoyed that the top line is dragging down the possession number with their sloppy play.

JVR could hold 50% in CF% in Philly, Kessel was 55% CF% playing with Savard in Boston.

I guess we all agree that players get better on the defensive side of the game with age.

So what is pulling JVR and Kessel down to the low 40'ties

@Cameron19 @Mcost61 Lines 2 - 4 are playing great and they deserve every win. It is just great to follow. But how many season can this sort of play be accepted from the top line.

@Cameron19 Leafs are still allowing almost 34 SA per game. BIG improvement of 2 shots per game. Those shitty numbers are mainly caused by the top line.

@Cameron19 @Great Dane So that Bozak like last season was number 52 in ES goals!!!!!!  Last season Bozak had an ES goal per 6.3 games this season is at an ES goal per 7.75 games.

@Mind Bomb @BoneChompski @Great Dane Fine - but then don't use him on the top line. Someone would fill that gap on the PP or PK.

Bozak is just a misfit, especially when Kadri seems to have figured it out with Santo and Winnik

"What’s happened to date is that the contrast between the Leafs top two lines couldn’t be more stark. With Kadri on the ice, the Leafs were just shy of a 50 per cent possession team (49.2) over their last 11 games coming into Tuesday’s win.

When he and linemates Dan Winnik and Mike Santorelli weren’t on the ice that number was an ugly 40.4 per cent."

Bozak is top 10 in goal scoring - GREAT. Or is it.

At ES Bozak is only number 63, now that is hard fact .

Kadri, Santo and Holland have more  goals than Bozak at ES.

Santo and Winnik have more assists at ES than Bozak. And who is playing with Kessel most of the time.

@Alec Brownscombe @Cameron19 The real problem is that other lines are working really well now. Of course that is not a problem, but I don't like the free riding attitude of the top line.

@Cameron19 @Great Dane @dlb, just dlb  You shouldn't pay 16 million for breaking even at ES.

6 goals - 3 from the top line. 2 ES and stilling letting 1 goal in at ES. It is not a free ride.

@dlb, just dlb We have come a long way since last season. The only thing that worries me is the fact that since the Nashville, three lines got the message. However, the top line is still coasting about

The Lords knows that I'm not a big fan of Carlyle, but I have to give credit lately for a work well done. Rolling four lines, praizing Kadri, Winnik and Santo for holding the other teams best lines at bay.

So it is quite obvious that our biggest problem now is the top line, they are scoring goals but they are not playing to the standard of the rest of the team.

@Mind Bomb @Great Dane @Bruffins I have even forgiven that way of playing. Kessel can play a defense game, no the problem is Bozak at center he is not a two-way center.

He can't score goals at EV and he is not defensively, so I can't find any good reason to have on that line. But then he doesn't really fit into roster.

@Burtonboy The top line do cheat - all the time. But Kessel can play a possession if he wants to. He did so with Savard. Kadri has the last game simply turn it on and I don't think that Bozak has that extra level.

You can have as much desire to win, work hard etc but if there no tools left in the tool box it is difficult.

I think that this 9-1-1 run more than even high-lights the problems of the Leafs:

Possession-wise the top line is killing this team.

I believe most will agree upon the following mainly derived from APs excellent stuff above:

- The top line can't continue it has to be broken up.

- Kadri is running an effective match-up line that you wouldn't like to change.

- Holland, Lupul and Clarkson are not really working well. You would probably put Komorov on that line instead of Lupul.

- Panik and Booth would probably be better with Carrick in the middle.

So to me the pieces that don't fit into the puzzle are Bozak and Lupul. S&N need to finding a trading partner. We have been looking for that illusive center since Sundin left the building, it is time to do something about it. We have the assets to swing a significant deal.

@Mind Bomb @MaxwellHowe @Great Dane @DeclanK The line-up - you have kadri twice - is actually the problem. Moving Kadri from Winnick and Santo right now is not a good idea IMO.

I would put Holland between JVR and Lupul and the consequence is that you need to trade Bozak, he simply doesn't fit into the roster if you agree that you can't play him with Kessel.

6 days, 11 hours ago on Monday Mashup: We’re Streaking

@DeclanK @MaxwellHowe IMO Kadri is starting to show that he can go up against a top-line (still need to work on his face-offs), but the first line is nightmare 5v5. Bozak is not a good enough center to control the game and care the his wingers.

Bozak has 3 ES goals in 30 games, one of them was an empty netter. That is not enough.

What a great game from the Leafs. I usually are pretty grumpy out this team, but is the way they should play. Out shooting the other team all the way. Not let up at any point in time.

And what a supporting act that Shanahan and Nonis have put together. First class, exactly what this team needs.

All these positive things leads me to my final point:

THE FIRST LINE IS A DISASTER,  check EDs work on game stat. For the season both Bozak and JVR are under 44% at ES. Kessel just above 45%. That is simply not good enough for a first line.

@Cameron19 @Great Dane I do believe that Phaneuf will be the odd man out. The main argument however is that we can not keep Phaneuf, Franson, Gardiner and Robidas and we can certainly not let Franson walk for nothing.

Shanahan and Nonis have to make a decision.

@Cameron19 I think that you need to have a make-over of the defense as well. A top quality two-way center for the first line plus someone to replace Phaneuf.

All of Phaneuf, Robidas, Gardiner and Franson simple don't match with Rielly and Polak. Further we have enough talent coming from the Marlies over the next couple of seasons

@wendelsfist They are closer than many believe. For the main problem is that top line is possession nightmare and so is the top d-pairing.

If top-line and top d-pairing would be 5%-point over 50% then it would tickle down, the bottom lines and pairings would "break-even"

That is obviously not the cast
