@Komas Taberle @Great Dane Exactly and the last stuff just convinced him to move up the time table.

@Burtonboy @Great Dane @MaxwellHowe @Savo43  Well, I or anybody can tell without being in the room.

You have to awful defeats; jerseys on the ice; then the players decide to not to greet the fans - suddenly. That is PR catastrophe. Plain and simple.

If Dion and Co. had that idea, support that idea or couldn't stop that idea from being executed then there is not the right leadership in the group.

BB - you have to understand that it is not about the stupid stick thing - it is all about the timing of the actions from the players.

@Burtonboy @MaxwellHowe @Great Dane @Savo43 The fundamentale issue here is not stick raising or not.

It is about leadership in the core group and that, that leadership group understand what is mean to be captain and As for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

If Dion and the rest had the slightest idea about PR and image then this would not have happened.

What is why Shanahan will act and will act soon.

Who in the MSM have not had a teed-bit in the last week: Dreger, Cox, Simmons, Kypreos, Mirtle, Friedman all have had their little piece of the puzzle.

1 day, 3 hours ago on Tuesday Mashup: Quinn tributes, Lupul and Booth set to return, Holzer recalled

@Savo43 Friedman and today Lupul in an interview with Mirtle about the last chance for this core.

It is not the event by it self that is coursing problems, who really cares.

This is all about leadership in the core group that is not working and completely out of touch with what is required by lead a team.

Examine carefully the statement from Friedman "not so, argued one long-time NHL media relation person..."

This must be someone very close to the Leafs.

Then Friedman continues with "passed the on-ice-test but failed the off-ice one".

Management or someone was told by management to send this message. This is much deeper than "stick-gate".

Friedman 30s:

"14. When Toronto didn’t salute its fans after an important victory over Tampa Bay, I thought the controversy was ridiculous. Not so, argued one long-time NHL media relations person. He said his team felt similarly last season, but when he heard, he pressed them to do it because he knew it would create an inferno. He was right, obviously. Impressive victories over the Lightning and Red Wings were overshadowed.

15. There’s no doubt, after looking at the video, the decision was made on the ice. Cody Franson was skating to centre before being pulled off. If Dion Phaneuf or another member of the leadership group stood up after and said, “You know what, we were mad at the jersey tossers and all the nice things you tweeted at us. We lost our minds for a second. Bad call,” this probably goes away. But they didn’t.

16. The question now becomes: are there any long-term implications here? There were reports the team tried to tell the players what to say, but I’m not sure about that. It’s more likely they warned about the maelstrom and told them to decide their comments for themselves. In essence, the players passed the on-ice test but failed the off-ice one. Does that convince the organization to change its leadership group?"

Probably the clearest indication that chances are coming.

@Burtonboy  This is much more on MacTavish than on Eakins. That roster is horrible and the way they drafted is almost as bad.

Yakopov for a second or a third round pick, as a reclamation project.

A small comparison of Kadri and Bozak 5v5.

                               Kadri           Bozak

Shots/games                 2.3              2.3

ESG                               5                2   (one empty netter)

CF60                            63.5           55.7

CA60                            62.7           64.7

Offensive zone start and quality of competition are about the same.

PPG                              0                 5

Bozak was 2 ESG in 21 games and fifty percent was the empty netter against Detroit.

Kadri and Bozak shoot 2.3 shots per game, that could be a lot better.

David, excellent inside on the Leafs.

I would dare two conclusion best upon the numbers:

First - I believe that the new defensive system is a step in the right direction. However, it also clear that the current group of defense-men are not good enough to get the work done. Now we shouldn't only blame the defense but also the forwards, especially the centers.

Which leads to my second conclusion:

A first line with JVR 43.9 - Bozak 46.3 - Kessel 46.6  in CF% that is simply not acceptable. They are killing the team with those numbers. A first line need to dominate the other team.

@ingy56 That Phaneuf as the captain could not stop, control  "Stick-gate" most have convinced Shanahan and Nonis that he can't be the captain of the Leafs.

Simmons today points out that Shanahan, Nonis and Carlyle didn't make him captain. That is dropped from someone.

Combine that with the comments from Dreger and Cox, I believe it was yesterday, and today from Simmons.  I personally believer that Shanahan and Nonis are doing the ground work on a move of a number of members of the core group.

My money are on Phaneuf as the first to be shipped out.

I can't help thinking that after the events this week, that Phaneuf is going to be traded very soon.

This is not about the salute after the game yesterday, it is about that way he handles himself towards the press and the fans.

He is the captain and he needs to understand better than anyone now the fan base reacts and especially the media. Phaneuf's  handling of the events the last week highlight the fact that he has absolutely no touch or feel for the situation.

Calm heads prevail is such situation and that head is not on Phaneufs shoulders. If the players want to change something, what is fine. However, it can not happen in the same week as you lose to absolutely the worst team in the league and then has the worst game for 23 years.

The captain have to be in control of his team and tell the hot heads: This is not the time.

This is basically a PR catastrophe create by the team and its captain with some very untimely changes and remarks.

This is not about the player Phaneuf but about the captain Phaneuf. For the Leafs captain it was at bridge too far.

@Mcost61 @Mind Bomb @Great Dane Leafs have one elite player: Kessel

Two potential elite players: Rielly and Nylander

One almost elite player: JVR - he could still be elite if played with some fire the entire season.

One almost elite goalie: Bernier - same as JVR need to prove that a whole season.

One border line top-pairing d-man: Phaneuf

two PMD - quaterback type player: Franson - Gardiner

@Mind Bomb @hometeem @Great Dane  We are not a contender and Leafs still need to trade 5-7 players on bad contracts for the best possible return.

A win doesn't change a thing: The Leafs are still inconsistent the hail mark of a team that doesn't have enough quality.

So sell as much as possible asap for pick and prospect and take as much salary back as the cap allows.

JVR and Kessel are under paid but there is 15 million cap space that should have been available now.

Based on the perfomance our cap hit should be about 15 million lower than it is.

Phaneuf - 2 million

Clarkson - 3.25 million

Robidas - 2 million

bozak - 2 million

Gardiner - 2 million

Lupul - 2.5 million (mainly due to always being injured)

The real problem for the Leafs is to fall fast enough this season to get either McDavid or Eichel. That is the real challenge.

@Cameron19 @McDickey @Scotty_8  A very valid point and that doesn't exclusively apply to Phaneuf on the Leafs.

Since the arrival of Carlyle the number of players misused is endless. Just take a look at the list below of players sent out due to Carlyle.

Our centers fall into that category. Clarkson, that looked sort of good on the third line with Komo and Santo is now on the second line where it doesn't work.

A core group that don't fit together and a string of players that put into a situation where they can't succeed.

Ducks actually have some cap space - how about moving Phaneuf there.

We would need to take Sourray back, but that is only money and we would get Hampus Lindholm to play with Reilly.

So balance the deal out Ducks would get Finn and Leafs a second round pick (prob. in the high 50ties)

Even Pachla - Sabres blogger is talking about Leafs tanking:

"This is the second loss in a row for Toronto and the second game in a row their fans displayed their anger and disgust by throwing their Leafs' regalia on the ice. Although this time a Leafs' sweater was thrown on the ice during live play. The Sabres had pounded the Leafs 6-2 three days prior and frustrated Leafs fans did the same thing, throwing their Leafs regalia on the First Niagara Center ice in Buffalo.

Although the Leafs are still a very respectable 9-8-2, no one can tell me that the thought of Connor McDavid donning the blue and white hasn't crossed the mind of Team President Brendan Shanahan. McDavid is from Newmarket, Ontario, just outside of Toronto and could take his place as a Zeus-type god sitting high atop Mount Maple Leaf.

Despite their self-perceived "holy" status in the hockey world, they've not been able to lure a true superstar to the Air Canada Center and like the Buffalo's and Edmonton's of the sportsworld, maybe the only way to get one is by picking at the top of the draft. With the Toronto languishing in mediocrity over the past nine seasons, and this year possibly spinning out of control, a nose dive to the lower eschelon of the league may well be in the cards."
