@Burtonboy Then I am certain that Leiweke can start finding the check book.

IF and I say IF this happens, then the likelyhood of Subban and Stamkos coming home to Toronto in 2016 suddenly increased dramatically.

On Subban from QMI

"Negotiations between the Canadiens and Subban did not go very well," Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports said Tuesday. "Is it possible that Subban should go to arbitration? I think so.

"On the contrary, would I call this possibility happening better than 50%? No, but it is still there."

If Subban and the Habs had to go to arbitration, the consequences could be very sad.

"If Subban should go to arbitration, this is probably his last contract with the Canadiens," Lavoie said. "Afterwards, it is obvious that he will look elsewhere.

@MaxwellHowe  We miss Nylander and Abbott and we have 52 under contract but 3 on a slide contract (Gauthier, Verhaeghe, Vasiliev).

But to me it looks like a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 deal is coming up

Anthony, this is one of your Top 5 blogs - thanks.

I would like to put this into a more strategic perspective. In my view Shanahan have given the support that Nonis needed and basicially eliminated the influence of Carlyle on the long term development of the team. Carlyle is now without the "old-timers" to support him.

Furthermore, I believe this is only part one of Shanahans strategic plan for the Leafs. The bottom 6 is relative easy to fix as mentioned by AP and Mirtle, but it is also the foundation on which your build to attract top players.

This season and the following season will be used to build a team that could support an arrival of one or two star players like Subban, Stamkos or Tavares.

To be honest since the draft where the Leafs took Nylander it has been one string good moves from Shanahan and Nonis. I do not believe that the team will be a play-off team this season, there are still too many holes in the line-up to fill or  have players grow into.

Longer term if the Leafs don't panic and stick to the plan I believe Shanahan have put forward, the future have not looked better for the Leafs since the 98-99 season

@Cameron19 @Mcost61 The capital mistake last season and this obviously is linked to Raymond and Kulemin, was management and many in Leafs nation were living a dream. Leafs had already had one break down over November and December, so they should liquidated all the players that they wouldn't extend and sign the rest.

Give Gardiner a 4 million cap hit - 6 years contract if they believe in him. When that is done and with the pipeline we have on defense Shanahan should move Franson to the Red Wings for Tomas Tatar, we might a to sweeten the pot a bit with a pick.

Sign MDZ to a one year 1.25 million deal.

If the team fly great, if they sink (what I would expect) then you have a large number of players that you can move out at the trade deadline as well as cap space to take on players that playoff teams want to unload.

@Burtonboy That was my conclusion without reading the article which just confirmed it.

You more than double your chances of getting a goal if you are carrying the puck. Leafs simply need to roll four line that all can carry the puck.

Eric T. conclusion in the last article is very good. Talbot odds are not much worse or better than Girouxs when carry the puck into the offensive zone, the real difference the that Giroux is 2-3 times better at getting the puck into the zone with possession.

3 weeks, 4 days ago on James Reimer Signs for 2 years, $2.3 million per season

Reply

@Burtonboy Try and go back to the article and look at Figure 4.  it shows that percentage a player takes the puck into the zone vs. if he has possession of the puck after the entry.

Look at 68  - who is no wonder:  Jagr

Leafs simply need to collect skilled players to stack the odds in our favor.

3 weeks, 4 days ago on James Reimer Signs for 2 years, $2.3 million per season

Reply

@Burtonboy Very interesting indeed. Two main conclusion from looking at the numbers are that carrying the puck in gives double the shoots and up to three times the number of goals. That is huge.

But also important is the fact that if you can create mismatch in your favor then the probablity of success is even bigger.

I noticed that Dubas worked on the idea of playing 4 forwards against the other teams 4th line.  This is directly coming from this.

If the Leafs are smart enough to roll four lines that can play hockey and then sending Kessel,  JVR or Kadri over the board if you can trap the other teams fourth line , that  could be very interesting.

Dubas is just playing the odds

@CanuckUKinToronto I am also convinced that it will lead to more goals, when you don't  have to be chasing the other team all the time.

3 weeks, 4 days ago on James Reimer Signs for 2 years, $2.3 million per season

Reply

@StanSmith Of course Reimer needs to play better but that he is capable of. In my other comments I emphasis the important of less shots against.

Leafs absolutely need to get under 30 shots against per game. Then our goalies will be much better.

If the shots against doesn't improve dramatically then you can start saving for your McDavid or Eichel jersey.

3 weeks, 4 days ago on James Reimer Signs for 2 years, $2.3 million per season

Reply

Now let Carlyle work the toaster and the media while Horachek and Spott fix the defense then the value of Reimer in the trade market will go up significantly.

My hope for next season is that our goalies will not face more than the league average in shots against.  Is that too much to wish for?

3 weeks, 4 days ago on James Reimer Signs for 2 years, $2.3 million per season

This is a very good signing by Nonis.

First of all Reimer is a good goalie that can play as a number one.

Then as Alec pointed out below, this is a very good contract to trade. 2 million second year is very budget friendly for many teams.

Further I would also noticed that Nonis and Shanahan now have much more leverage when negociating with Bernier for a new contract. Bernier is RFA, so Leafs have a very solid hand to play.

I am certain Bernier is long-term deal, but Leafs might be able to get a lot cheaper than without having Reimer signed.

Locking up Bernier with a 1 million or 1.5 million lower cap hit 4 or 5 years would be very beneficial for the whole idea of signing Stamkos and/or Subban as UFAs

3 weeks, 4 days ago on James Reimer Signs for 2 years, $2.3 million per season

Anthony - excellent piece.

What I noticed here is that statement about moving from the draft to the Marlies to the Leafs.

Obviously, the the success of the Marlies will have a positive impact on the Leafs when the developing of talent in-house ends up at the NHL level.

In one or two years time Leafs will have enough home grown talent to fill the bottom lines and pairings. Cap can then be spend on high profile signings like S..... and S.....

The future looks a lot brighter these days for the Leafs. Removing RC during this season when he was secured a top pick would make it a sunny day in Leafs Nation.

@Cameron19 Cam we do agree that this team is not much better than last year. A center we scary weak.

We have a number of players on short term contracts as well as a number of players that can't be considered part of the core going forward.

Leafs have to convert this into long-term assets hence the requirement to trade a number of players.

With the centers that currently have there is no way that we will succeed next season: So fire Carlyle; trade more or less every non-core player. Draft Eichel or McDavid.

Then we suddenly look good for the future. With Bozak, Lupul, and maybe even Kadri gone. We have cap space to sign both Stamkos and Pk Subban.

JVR - Stamkos - Kessel

Brown  - McDavid  - Nylander

Komorov - Holland - Clarkson

Leivo  -   Gauthier  -  Ashton

Gardiner - Phaneuf

Reilly - Subban

Granberg - Finn

I dare to dream BIG
