@The_Polish_Cannon @MaxwellHowe the contract still counts in the 50 allowed contracts
3 weeks ago on Jake Gardiner Signs for 5 years, $20.25 million
@Burtonboy Then I am certain that Leiweke can start finding the check book.
IF and I say IF this happens, then the likelyhood of Subban and Stamkos coming home to Toronto in 2016 suddenly increased dramatically.
On Subban from QMI
"Negotiations between the Canadiens and Subban did not go very well,"
Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports said Tuesday. "Is it possible that Subban
should go to arbitration? I think so.
"On the contrary, would I call this possibility happening better than 50%? No, but it is still there."
If Subban and the Habs had to go to arbitration, the consequences could be very sad.
"If Subban should go to arbitration, this is probably his last
contract with the Canadiens," Lavoie said. "Afterwards, it is obvious
that he will look elsewhere.

@MaxwellHowe We miss Nylander and Abbott and we have 52 under contract but 3 on a slide contract (Gauthier, Verhaeghe, Vasiliev).
But to me it looks like a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 deal is coming up
@Cameron19 I think a lot have changed in the draft - completely new approach
3 weeks, 1 day ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
Anthony, this is one of your Top 5 blogs - thanks.
I would like to put this into a more strategic perspective. In my view Shanahan have given the support that Nonis needed and basicially eliminated the influence of Carlyle on the long term development of the team. Carlyle is now without the "old-timers" to support him.
Furthermore, I believe this is only part one of Shanahans strategic plan for the Leafs. The bottom 6 is relative easy to fix as mentioned by AP and Mirtle, but it is also the foundation on which your build to attract top players.
This season and the following season will be used to build a team that could support an arrival of one or two star players like Subban, Stamkos or Tavares.
To be honest since the draft where the Leafs took Nylander it has been one string good moves from Shanahan and Nonis. I do not believe that the team will be a play-off team this season, there are still too many holes in the line-up to fill or have players grow into.
Longer term if the Leafs don't panic and stick to the plan I believe Shanahan have put forward, the future have not looked better for the Leafs since the 98-99 season
3 weeks, 1 day ago on Brendan Shanahan Addresses Depth, Not Core of Toronto Maple Leafs
@Loric76 @Cameron19 But was bound to happen. No team can survive a 82 game season being out shot with 6-8 shots on average.
@Cameron19 @Mcost61 The capital mistake last season and this obviously is linked to Raymond and Kulemin, was management and many in Leafs nation were living a dream. Leafs had already had one break down over November and December, so they should liquidated all the players that they wouldn't extend and sign the rest.
A capital mistake from management
@DeclanK It is not up yet - are you playing us
@Mind Bomb @ingy56 @DeclanK Well then Subban must have signed it LOL
Just listen to the interview Dec posted.
PK is just to well spoken, he would having the MSM dancing to his tune all night long.
@The_Polish_Cannon @KesselJVR Habs wouldn't do either. Subban will only get to Toronto as an UFA
According to cap geek Leafs has 24 players under contract for a total cap hit of 65.9 million leaving about 3 million to sign Gardiner.
Then Leafs would still have to demote 2 players to get down to 23
3 weeks, 2 days ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
@Yaknowwhat It will not be high picks for a number of picks.
@Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs @Burtonboy I think this is a plan from the hands of Shanahan to maximum picks for the next draft.
@Burtonboy Now the real question is how many will be traded
@Yaknowwhat I think that you can include Lupul in that list.
@DeclanK @dlb Mad @TheCanucksnaphook I look at this as more to protect our prospects. Leafs are still not good enough up the middle.
Do I maintain that most of the new players are sign and trade players that will give Shanahan a boat load of picks in the next draft.
@wendelsfist And it doesn't have to be all the tea in China
@wendelsfist I am sure that they have decided to send Nylander back to Sweden. Next year he will be ready to play with either McDavid or Eichel
Can you guys say: TRADE
IMHO this is another sign and trade contract. Between Christmas and the trade deadline Nonis and Shanahan are going to have a fire sale.
Another 1 year contract at an affordable price.
Give Gardiner a 4 million cap hit - 6 years contract if they believe in him. When that is done and with the pipeline we have on defense Shanahan should move Franson to the Red Wings for Tomas Tatar, we might a to sweeten the pot a bit with a pick.
Sign MDZ to a one year 1.25 million deal.
If the team fly great, if they sink (what I would expect) then you have a large number of players that you can move out at the trade deadline as well as cap space to take on players that playoff teams want to unload.
3 weeks, 3 days ago on Monday Mashup: Gardiner’s Up Next
@docmma @Burtonboy @4evrblue @CanuckUKinToronto What Komorov is doing it exactly what we need.
he never goes over the line, but provoke the other players to do that. We need the other teams players in the penalty box not ours.
3 weeks, 3 days ago on James Reimer Signs for 2 years, $2.3 million per season
@Burtonboy @4evrblue @CanuckUKinToronto A thousand likes to you BB. Just related to the discussion and the papers that you found yesterday, when you hear Orr is great clearing the zone you think - Oh my God - some considered it a skill to give the puck away.
@CanuckUKinToronto Try to make a deal for Tomas Tatar straight up for Franson
@Burtonboy That was my conclusion without reading the article which just confirmed it.
You more than double your chances of getting a goal if you are carrying the puck. Leafs simply need to roll four line that all can carry the puck.
Eric T. conclusion in the last article is very good. Talbot odds are not much worse or better than Girouxs when carry the puck into the offensive zone, the real difference the that Giroux is 2-3 times better at getting the puck into the zone with possession.
3 weeks, 4 days ago on James Reimer Signs for 2 years, $2.3 million per season
@Mind Bomb @Great Dane @Burtonboy Do you you guys know why JVR has such a steal from the Flyers !!!!!!!!!!
JVR keeps the puck more 60% of the time he carries the puck into the zone. Voila
@Burtonboy Try and go back to the article and look at Figure 4. it shows that percentage a player takes the puck into the zone vs. if he has possession of the puck after the entry.
Look at 68 - who is no wonder: Jagr
Leafs simply need to collect skilled players to stack the odds in our favor.
@Burtonboy Very interesting indeed. Two main conclusion from looking at the numbers are that carrying the puck in gives double the shoots and up to three times the number of goals. That is huge.
But also important is the fact that if you can create mismatch in your favor then the probablity of success is even bigger.
I noticed that Dubas worked on the idea of playing 4 forwards against the other teams 4th line. This is directly coming from this.
If the Leafs are smart enough to roll four lines that can play hockey and then sending Kessel, JVR or Kadri over the board if you can trap the other teams fourth line , that could be very interesting.
Dubas is just playing the odds
@CanuckUKinToronto I am also convinced that it will lead to more goals, when you don't have to be chasing the other team all the time.
@StanSmith Of course Reimer needs to play better but that he is capable of. In my other comments I emphasis the important of less shots against.
Leafs absolutely need to get under 30 shots against per game. Then our goalies will be much better.
If the shots against doesn't improve dramatically then you can start saving for your McDavid or Eichel jersey.
Now let Carlyle work the toaster and the media while Horachek and Spott fix the defense then the value of Reimer in the trade market will go up significantly.
My hope for next season is that our goalies will not face more than the league average in shots against. Is that too much to wish for?
This is a very good signing by Nonis.
First of all Reimer is a good goalie that can play as a number one.
Then as Alec pointed out below, this is a very good contract to trade. 2 million second year is very budget friendly for many teams.
Further I would also noticed that Nonis and Shanahan now have much more leverage when negociating with Bernier for a new contract. Bernier is RFA, so Leafs have a very solid hand to play.
I am certain Bernier is long-term deal, but Leafs might be able to get a lot cheaper than without having Reimer signed.
Locking up Bernier with a 1 million or 1.5 million lower cap hit 4 or 5 years would be very beneficial for the whole idea of signing Stamkos and/or Subban as UFAs
Anthony - excellent piece.
What I noticed here is that statement about moving from the draft to the Marlies to the Leafs.
Obviously, the the success of the Marlies will have a positive impact on the Leafs when the developing of talent in-house ends up at the NHL level.
In one or two years time Leafs will have enough home grown talent to fill the bottom lines and pairings. Cap can then be spend on high profile signings like S..... and S.....
The future looks a lot brighter these days for the Leafs. Removing RC during this season when he was secured a top pick would make it a sunny day in Leafs Nation.
3 weeks, 6 days ago on In conversation with Dave Morrison – Part 3
@WillyNylly They are IMO more Burke picks than Morrisons. But yes more or less a total flop.
4 weeks ago on MLHS in conversation with Dave Morrison – Part 2
@FRyan That is probably the best performing parts of the Leafs.
4 weeks, 1 day ago on Wednesday Mashup: Dubas Mania
@Murph2417 @CanuckUKinToronto That was the mistake we made last season. This team is not good enough, so you have to sell. Playoff position or not.
4 weeks, 1 day ago on Leafs sign David Booth to a 1-year, $1.1 million contract
The Leafs line-up for a fire sale at the trade deadline:
1 year contracts:
Santorelli, Booth, Kontiola, Ashton, Franson and let us assume Reimer
2 year contracts:
Frattin, Holland, Polak
Long contracts that could be move:
Bozak and Lupul
And the joker:
@Cameron19 Cam we do agree that this team is not much better than last year. A center we scary weak.
We have a number of players on short term contracts as well as a number of players that can't be considered part of the core going forward.
Leafs have to convert this into long-term assets hence the requirement to trade a number of players.
With the signing of Booth to me it looks more and more like a big trade is coming up.
Bozak, Lupul, Franson and Reimer in a 1-3 package should give a good return.
@Cloud09 Still very weak up the middle and 3 or 4 forwards on one years deals.
@Murph2417 Now we should just remember to trade them for picks or prospects.
@Burtonboy Seems like Shanahan and Nonis now prefer to play in the other teams end of the rink. Good sign.
Still can't see where the "toaster" fits into the picture LOL
@Murph2417 Nope - and you don't need a spreadsheet to figure that out. 12-13 over achieved, 13-14 just played as they could.
4 weeks, 1 day ago on Kyle Dubas, Brendan Shanahan Live Press Conference
@TheCanucksnaphook Leafs need to do that. We still do not have enough talent and skill on the team.
With the centers that currently have there is no way that we will succeed next season: So fire Carlyle; trade more or less every non-core player. Draft Eichel or McDavid.
Then we suddenly look good for the future. With Bozak, Lupul, and maybe even Kadri gone. We have cap space to sign both Stamkos and Pk Subban.
JVR - Stamkos - Kessel
Brown - McDavid - Nylander
Komorov - Holland - Clarkson
Leivo - Gauthier - Ashton
Gardiner - Phaneuf
Reilly - Subban
Granberg - Finn
I dare to dream BIG
4 weeks, 1 day ago on Poulin, Loiselle Fired as Assistant GMs; Leafs bring in Kyle Dubas
@Komas Taberle @Great Dane @Burtonboy The way I look upon this is that number of left over players from the Burke era are going to be traded very very soon.
Bozak will be a prime candidate and maybe Lupul and Franson.
This smells like a move for the future. Analyze all players probably with adv. stats trade the bad ones; get picks and prospects; draft high again.
@Mitch92 Reconnecting McDavid with Brown at the NHL level sounds OK with me.
@Burtonboy Absolutely and sounds very positive. Those two interviews is so "anti-Carlyle" and sweet music to my ears.
Big, fast and most of all skilled team that holds on to the puck accepting that players can loose the puck. Playing four lines and mobile defense men.
To sum it up: GREAT NEWS
@TheCanucksnaphook @Cameron19 Carlyles price for letting his assistance go. Scary
