I can't help thinking that after the events this week, that Phaneuf is going to be traded very soon.
This is not about the salute after the game yesterday, it is about that way he handles himself towards the press and the fans.
He is the captain and he needs to understand better than anyone now the fan base reacts and especially the media. Phaneuf's handling of the events the last week highlight the fact that he has absolutely no touch or feel for the situation.
Calm heads prevail is such situation and that head is not on Phaneufs shoulders. If the players want to change something, what is fine. However, it can not happen in the same week as you lose to absolutely the worst team in the league and then has the worst game for 23 years.
The captain have to be in control of his team and tell the hot heads: This is not the time.
This is basically a PR catastrophe create by the team and its captain with some very untimely changes and remarks.
This is not about the player Phaneuf but about the captain Phaneuf. For the Leafs captain it was at bridge too far.

@Mcost61 @Mind Bomb @Great Dane Leafs have one elite player: Kessel
Two potential elite players: Rielly and Nylander
One almost elite player: JVR - he could still be elite if played with some fire the entire season.
One almost elite goalie: Bernier - same as JVR need to prove that a whole season.
One border line top-pairing d-man: Phaneuf
two PMD - quaterback type player: Franson - Gardiner

@Mind Bomb @hometeem @Great Dane We are not a contender and Leafs still need to trade 5-7 players on bad contracts for the best possible return.
A win doesn't change a thing: The Leafs are still inconsistent the hail mark of a team that doesn't have enough quality.
So sell as much as possible asap for pick and prospect and take as much salary back as the cap allows.
16 hours, 55 minutes ago on Game Review: Game #20, Maple Leafs 5 vs. Lightning 2
@Mcost61 @Mind Bomb @Great Dane I fully agree on the lack of cap space. The problem regarding cap space is not Kessel and his 8 million that are all the contracts that was handed out.
I made the list yesterday.
JVR and Kessel are under paid but there is 15 million cap space that should have been available now.
17 hours, 1 minute ago on Game Review: Game #20, Maple Leafs 5 vs. Lightning 2
Spezza 4 years 30 million. 8 million for Kessel is suddenly cheap
17 hours, 12 minutes ago on Game Review: Game #20, Maple Leafs 5 vs. Lightning 2
@Mo29 @hometeem Maybe the Penns would like to have him
19 hours, 39 minutes ago on Game Review: Game #20, Maple Leafs 5 vs. Lightning 2
@MaxwellHowe To be honest the is an enormous leadership issues on this team. Something like this - I accept that the players can do that - can only come and be lead by the captain.
Changes are not only needed but also required, and it can't start too soon.
21 hours, 29 minutes ago on Game Review: Game #20, Maple Leafs 5 vs. Lightning 2
@MaxwellHowe So who was leading the Leafs of the ice ??????
21 hours, 44 minutes ago on Game Review: Game #20, Maple Leafs 5 vs. Lightning 2
@DeclanK @Great Dane 50% of the team is gone - but that was probably not the 50% that is the real problem i.e. the core.
Coach and core are still the same.

So going back to last year - the #Leafs have only won 23 of their last 87 gp in regulation play. (26.4%) They've lost 40 in regulation (46%)
Do anyone need further confirmation about the actual capacity of this team
Johnson so far with an assist tonight
1 day, 14 hours ago on Thursday Mashup: Sky yet to fall, Leafs vs. Lightning tonight
@kxbarillas @Great Dane who did show up
1 day, 17 hours ago on Thursday Mashup: Sky yet to fall, Leafs vs. Lightning tonight
@kxbarillas @Great Dane Lupul would be there. Bozak as well, he is the college guy and I would also go mad listening to Carlyle. Phaneuf I simply don't think he gets it. I could be wrong.
@Yan28 @Great Dane @kxbarillas That is probably one that I would put in that group. Kessel clearly has showed that he doesn't like losing.
@kxbarillas Who belongs to that group?
@Cameron19 Something like that. 37 - two broken legs and then 3 year contract
1 day, 20 hours ago on Thursday Mashup: Sky yet to fall, Leafs vs. Lightning tonight
@Cameron19 @Yaknowwhat @Mcost61 Cam the real problem is that we a number of contacts including Phaneufs where Leafs overpay from slightly to enormous.
Based on the perfomance our cap hit should be about 15 million lower than it is.
Phaneuf - 2 million
Clarkson - 3.25 million
Robidas - 2 million
bozak - 2 million
Gardiner - 2 million
Lupul - 2.5 million (mainly due to always being injured)
@Darkside Beleafer @Great Dane you can't ask anyone to produce above their capacity. Phaneuf is just not a #1 d-man.
Coach and management want him to be, but that doesn't change the facts.
"I don't think this is about Phaneuf. I think this is a classic example
of 1 guy being asked to do so much with so little support"
@Cameron19 @Great Dane Phaneuf and Franson together is absolutely hopeless. Now I expect that Franson wants 4+ million and then he need to go asap
2 days, 11 hours ago on Game Review: Game #19, Nashville Predators 9, Toronto Maple Leafs 2
@Cameron19 @Luke_R @Scotty_8 @McDickey Phaneuf is a great number 3 d-man
@Cameron19 If Franson would sign a reasonable contract I would keep him to play PP and the third pairing. Then move out both Gardiner and Phaneuf.
The real problem for the Leafs is to fall fast enough this season to get either McDavid or Eichel. That is the real challenge.
@Cameron19 @McDickey @Scotty_8 A very valid point and that doesn't exclusively apply to Phaneuf on the Leafs.
Since the arrival of Carlyle the number of players misused is endless. Just take a look at the list below of players sent out due to Carlyle.
Our centers fall into that category. Clarkson, that looked sort of good on the third line with Komo and Santo is now on the second line where it doesn't work.
A core group that don't fit together and a string of players that put into a situation where they can't succeed.
@Luke_R @HHT Washinton, Philly, Dallas, Ny Ranger, Devils will move past us. Colorado, Florida, Arizona and maybe even Columbus could do so. Then we are at least in top 5
2 days, 12 hours ago on Game Review: Game #19, Nashville Predators 9, Toronto Maple Leafs 2
Ducks actually have some cap space - how about moving Phaneuf there.
We would need to take Sourray back, but that is only money and we would get Hampus Lindholm to play with Reilly.
So balance the deal out Ducks would get Finn and Leafs a second round pick (prob. in the high 50ties)
@Cameron19 Well, most of this is due to Carlyle having the upper hand on Nonis i.e. Nonis caving in on Carlyles demands.
2 days, 13 hours ago on Game Review: Game #19, Nashville Predators 9, Toronto Maple Leafs 2
@Zep2 If they need defensive help Phaneuf is the right man for them. Make it happen.
@Yaknowwhat It has been for quite awhile

Even Pachla - Sabres blogger is talking about Leafs tanking:
"This is the second loss in a row for Toronto and the second game in a
row their fans displayed their anger and disgust by throwing their
Leafs' regalia on the ice. Although this time a Leafs' sweater was
thrown on the ice during live play. The Sabres had pounded the Leafs 6-2
three days prior and frustrated Leafs fans did the same thing, throwing
their Leafs regalia on the First Niagara Center ice in Buffalo.
Although the Leafs are still a very respectable 9-8-2, no one can tell
me that the thought of Connor McDavid donning the blue and white hasn't
crossed the mind of Team President Brendan Shanahan. McDavid is from
Newmarket, Ontario, just outside of Toronto and could take his place as a
Zeus-type god sitting high atop Mount Maple Leaf.
Despite their self-perceived "holy" status in the hockey world, they've
not been able to lure a true superstar to the Air Canada Center and like
the Buffalo's and Edmonton's of the sportsworld, maybe the only way to
get one is by picking at the top of the draft. With the Toronto
languishing in mediocrity over the past nine seasons, and this year
possibly spinning out of control, a nose dive to the lower eschelon of
the league may well be in the cards."
@hometeem @Great Dane yep - do it
2 days, 19 hours ago on Game Review: Game #19, Nashville Predators 9, Toronto Maple Leafs 2
@Burtonboy @TheLoovTrain yes the team totally imploded. I think that there is no way out of this right now.
We just need to sell players for picks and prospect when ever possible
My core right now is down to three players: Kessel, Bernier and Rielly.
@hometeem They should be moved between now and the draft. No reason to panic but yes most of the "core" should be moved.
@peterbleafs @MattyMoe JVR should be move away from Kessel. E.Kane - E. Staal - Kessel would be much better.
2 days, 20 hours ago on Game Review: Game #19, Nashville Predators 9, Toronto Maple Leafs 2
@MattyMoe I only have one problem. I want Carlyle as far away from our young players as soon as possible.
Best move this season from Shanahan and Nonis: To send Nylander back to Sweden
@Yaknowwhat Kessel is one of the few who cares. Most of the team are professionals they play for money, which showed yesterday
Very good assessment of the Leafs:
3 days, 1 hour ago on Game Review: Game #19, Nashville Predators 9, Toronto Maple Leafs 2
Dangles absolute best:
High-point when Mrs. Dangle shouts "Nashville scored" through the door

Yesterday on this board I asked the question: What is wrong with this team!!!!
And I got an answer from the team: About everything.
15 GA in two games against the worst team in the NHL and and an ok Preds team. WOW.
Carlyle should be gone before the next game.
Shanahan and Nonis have to identify the 6-7 players that they should keep. In my book that is:
Kessel, Rielly, Bernier, JVR, Komorov and Winnik. Clarkson is special case but not our biggest headache. Holland I would probably keep as well.
Rest should be trade for the best possible return.
Guys, The Toronto Maple Leafs are officially in the hunt for McDavid or Eichel.
May the worst team win.
@Burtonboy @peterbleafs They are running around like headless chickens. What is wrong with this team and the coaching??????
3 days, 13 hours ago on Tuesday Mashup: Preds in town tonight
@Burtonboy What would you expect !!!!!!! It is really sad.
@colino17 @Burtonboy If we have anything remotely like Sundin or Forsberg in Nylander I would be a happy camper. A Backstrom would do fine as well.
But as BB said it is early days.
One thing that I would add is that Modo couldn't win with out Nylander. 2 reg. wins in 10 games without WM.
4 reg. wins in 10 games with WM.
3 days, 16 hours ago on Tuesday Mashup: Preds in town tonight
@Burtonboy P. Forsberg at 19 had 1.32 ppg.
3 days, 17 hours ago on Tuesday Mashup: Preds in town tonight
@wendelsfist @Burtonboy yep
@Cameron19 @Great Dane @Mind Bomb I would expect Nylander to be more like Niklas Backström. They are about the same size.
@Mind Bomb @Great Dane @Cameron19 Probably could if he didn't have those problems with his feet
@Cameron19 @Great Dane @Mind Bomb If Nylander continues the scoring pace then we are talking about Backström or Forsberg level of talent. Then he don't need to go to the Marlies.
Forsberg is right now Nylander's ass. GM and I do believe that he can evaluate talent and he is extremely positive.
@Cameron19 @Mind Bomb Kadri works best on the third line playing against lesser competition as the number above clearly shows.
That place should be taken by Nylander next season and hopefully for another 2-3 season before he is ready to move up.
With the third line center spot taken, where do you put Holland, Kadri and Bozak.
None of them can play 1st line.
None of them are a two-way center.
But Holland is cheap, so there is no alternative to move Bozak and Kadri asap if Nylander is going to play center and that I believe is a fact.
Well, ROR would of course be a nice addition to the roster. However, if ROR is not going to play center then we have a number of much more urgent problems that should be solved first.
Having Bozak coasting around on the top line is something that should be address asap. Now I do understand that first line centers are a rare commodity and you can basically only draft them.
Then take the consequence and sell most of the core in order to draft that center.
