@Xxxxxnew In all fairness, this is BY FAR the toughest market to run a hockey team. Detroit may be an original 6 team, but they're probably the 3rd most important team in the city. At most.

@WB_222 Nor should he. IMO you shouldn't pay full market value for your own UFA's.

@MaxwellHowe They're not. I bet when they fired RC they had made up their minds what direction they were going.

@Cameron19 Fair enough. But my issue isn't with the play of Kessel or Dion or anybody else. It's whether they can lead this team. Scorers go in slumps, goalies...everybody does. But the ability to lead should always be there. The alternative is that this team is just much less talented than we all thought.

@Cameron19 You can certainly try to distinguish between the types of collapses, or the causes of it, but 2012 was most definitely a collapse. It was longer and worse than last year. And some would say we may have been saved from a collapse in 2013 by the shortened season. I actually don't view this year as a collapse...it's too early. We had a really hot streak, not we're having a really cold streak. We'll see where we end up, but I think it's safe to say there's something rotten with this core. I said it last summer...teams with a strong leadership core have the ability to steer out of the skid...this team doesn't and they don't even know why.

@hometeem There's tons of Cup winners who come out of nowhere. LA was a mess the first year they won the Cup. The Playoffs are a 2 month tournament...that's all. All it takes is a hot goalie. We see it all the time...just about every year actually.

@philthethrill Rebuilding moves? No way, they picked up Hannan, Torres and other players at the same deadline.

8 hours, 36 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

Reply

@hometeem I understand, just as long as you realize that no team ever trades their entire 2nd line because they're pending UFA's.

Edit: And any team who makes the playoffs is a contending team. LA has proven that repeatedly.

8 hours, 41 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

Reply

@hometeem So you would have rolled with Grabs instead of Bolland essentially? Even though he failed miserably in that role under Carlyle? We needed a matchup centre, and they obviously thought that was Bolland. They were wrong as it turns out, but I can see their logic at the time.

As far as trading expiring contracts I just can't believe anyone thinks this is a rational move. You're in a Playoff race (fighting for home ice at the deadline) and you think we should trade every pending UFA? What message does that send to the fans or the other players? Contending teams just don't do it.

8 hours, 44 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

Reply

@philthethrill So you have Bozak, Grabs and Kadri up the middle? How do you have them slotted? Then I assume you don't go after Bolland since we have no need for another centre. It sounds like you would have pretty much stood pat...which may have been the right move, but you also may have been roasted alive by the fans and media after the collapse in Boston.

8 hours, 52 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

@philthethrill Do you have the money to keep Grabs, extend Bozak and then re-sign Dion and/or Phil?

8 hours, 55 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

@Top Jimmy You think Nonis is incompetent, so then you assume Shanahan or Dubas made the decent moves this summer. You have no proof of that, but you just think it.

8 hours, 58 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

Reply

@hometeem So if you were doing things you wouldn't have signed Clarkson obviously. But then what other moves would you have done instead regarding Grabs, MacA, Kuli, Bozak, Bolland etc? I see lots of criticism, a lot of it valid, but I don't see anyone bring any other ideas to the table.

8 hours, 59 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

@Top Jimmy You think that because it fits your narrative that Nonis is incompetent.

9 hours, 6 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

@philthethrill So blame Columbus for being idiots and trading Gaborik for shit like Frattin and a 2nd. That's not our fault. There was also another 2nd and a 3rd LA gave up, BTW.

@philthethrill Bernier trade? Holland trade? There's no way those can be viewed as blunders.

9 hours, 11 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

@Knights2Leafs The Clarkson term was worrisome, but he was paid market value, so if you didn't like the $ then you didn't want the player. And just about everyone wanted that player...they were talking about him months before he even got to UFA.

And coming on the heels on the Boston collapse I think a 2nd and 2 4ths was a pretty cheap price to pay for a guy like Bolland, coming off scoring the Cup winner.

At some point you either make a move or you sit on your hands and hope what you have in house improves. Nonis would have been roasted for doing either that summer.

9 hours, 12 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

Reply

@philthethrill Yeah, the term was a worry for sure. But he was exactly the type of player this fanbase was pining for...a tough guy who could take a regular shift and chip in offensively. No one has any idea what's happened to his game. And at the end of the day Nonis will probably be fired for that deal all by itself. The other stuff is just regular swings and misses that NHL GM's make over the years.

@philthethrill They're not just HIS blunders though....you see that, don't you?

@philthethrill Big deal. You think THAT'S our biggest problem right now?

As Cam has said, a regular buyout on Komi would have been fine, then use the 2 compliance buyouts on Grabs and Liles. But just about everyone was fine AT THE TIME with the Bolland and Clarkson deals. They look bad now, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. The Bozak signing was fine, except if you wanted him to walk for nothing (which some people did).

Dion's deal, Phil's deal are both market value.

@philthethrill That's the only one which makes no sense, the Grabs one did at the time. When he couldn't trade Liles Nonis at least tried to turn him into a player type we needed...Gleason. We just had too many terrible contracts at the time.

9 hours, 29 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

@philthethrill That's a joke. You don't like those deals NOW...fine. But at the very least they're market value, unlike the Grabs and Liles deals which were pulled out of Burke's ass.

Such a brilliant collection of posters in here today...everyone knew exactly what was going to happen BEFORE it happened to the careers of Liles, Grabs, MacA, Bolland, Clarkson etc. I just wish you guys had informed the management so they could have made the right decisions.

@philthethrill Grabs was crap for what he was getting paid. All you need for proof is the fact that he hasn't managed to match the contract Burke gave him since he was bought out. I think most people assumed Liles could be traded, but again...another terrible Burke contract.

9 hours, 35 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

@Top Jimmy Kuli? Please don't start with that guy again. And Grabs is shit, you want to blame someone blame Burke for giving that little turd his ridiculous deal in the first place. The only buyout mistake was Komi, with only one year left, but apparently he promised him he wouldn't stay buried in the AHL for another year.

All these buyout mistakes were brought on by Burke's terrible contract management...Komi, Grabs, Liles, Lupul. There were only so many buyout available.

9 hours, 40 minutes ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion

@WB_222 What was the easy out...2 amnesty buyouts (which he helped negotiate for) to remove some of his awful contracts? Nonis fucked up with Clarkson, and he'll probably lose his job over that, but that's it. Burke drafted shitty, negotiated shitty and, as it turns out, maybe traded shitty too. Plus he couldn't keep his big mouth shut and was Bettman's right -hand man. He hired RC too.

@Sebastian James It's not about being able to replace him, it's about being able to afford him. This team has to start respecting Cap space a little better and if Franson's in line for 6 x 6 then you walk away in a hurry.

@FloorHockeyFlopper It was either from 14 or 15, but since we used Holland for more than 25 games we had to give our 14 second to Anaheim, and then the Bernier switched to 15.
