@wiski No you wouldn't Randy. It's awesome to see Dion finally playing with some snarl.

@TheLoovTrain Everyone seemed really happy about it. Until 3 hours in we all realized it was Mark who was hired and not Tim.

@Cameron19 It's not an argument in favour of reffing...believe me. It's just facing reality. It's a very difficult sport to officiate, players like to cheat all the time and the NHL never talks about their refs. It's a recipe for dissatisfaction. I don't believe any one team gets worse officiating over the long haul. It's bad from game to game, but shit evens out.

Watch a game from 20 years ago and see the inconsistencies. Nothing has changed...nothing will.

@Cameron19 Must get better?...oh, you must be young. As long as every fanbase thinks the refs have it in for them I figure the NHL is happy.

@Bigfoot_for_1C They're definitely in the playoff hunt. I just wish people would admit WHY they became crazy spenders all of a sudden this off-season.

@Cameron19 The first call on Lupul was terrible, and they missed the goalie interference call. But frankly, two missed calls per period is pretty much standard in the NHL.

@wiski I liked it last year. But only if Randy plays the 4th line with whoever else he's dropped there. Plus, he can mix and match his d-men if he wants.

@Cosmos1973 I think Winnick earned the 2nd line spot. I think Booth, Santo, and Winnick are all upgrades on Raymond. Leivo was hurt at the end of camp, wasn't he? I don't think RC will play any 4th line unit...it's just his way.

@Potcy I agree, but I think if you spend more time in your zone, chasing the puck you're gonna take more penalties. It's not rocket surgery. Look at the short season...our PP/PK numbers were so much better because we were playing better.

@Wilbur I'd love to see the stats...but I'd bet the better team gets more of the calls. Lupul's 2nd was so frustrating because you just know the refs are looking to give us one. Instead he puts his stick in a guy's glove and takes another.

Play hard and you'll get more PP's...this team will learn that one day I hope.

@leafmealone Two things...Franson is the guy who's stepped up the most of all our d-men. That's what the stats say anyways. Also, what you described is not at all what happened on that OT goal.

@Cameron19 Good post.

I'm never 100% sure if it's that other teams have better players or they have better systems which make the players look better. I agree that we don't seem to be able to sustain it when our better players slump. You look at how LA's 3rd line is basically carrying that team. Have we ever had that possibility?

The clock is definitely ticking on this core, and unless they get augmented with legitimate players VERY SOON we'll never win a thing with them. I think if we end up out of the playoffs again this year the Management will definitely have to consider dismantling things.

@dlb Mad There's shit you can get away with, and there's shit you can't get away with. The Leafs have not learned the difference. If every penalty was called during a game there would literally be a PP all game long. The trick is to walk right along the edge. The Wings are very good at getting away with stuff...we are not.

@dlb Mad Yeah...Hall on Boston would be really tough to handle. He's so physical, a little dirty. He'd fit right in.

@Optimistic Otis It wasn't a shot at you. I know this type of play with Franson is a double-edged sword. One the one hand he's stepping up in the neutral zone, but that can turn into a bad pinch very quickly.

I just want to make sure that we trust what the data is, rather than falling on our old assumptions about a player. If Franson steps up effectively 10 times, but then gets beat terribly once, what are we going to remember?

@Bruffins That picture tells nothing though. First all all, it was a very hard cross ice pass that Zetterberg one-times in off the post perfectly. Bernier was sliding from his right to left at the time...a makeable, but very difficult save. Also, anyone expecting Franson to be out that high on Zetterberg is a fool, when the rush was coming down the wing to his right. Zetterberg was basically a trailing forward on the play who beat our 2 forwards down the ice by 40'. Have a guess who they were, BTW. And lastly, there was no screen on that shot.
