Does anyone really see a reason why Stastny would choose to come here over his other options?

@Belfour20/JB-45

It's not a decline in play only lower production. Calgary didn't need Phagoof to play 1st pair or shutdown but they did need to increase the level of competition to develop the player and max out his tools.

With the increased competition points become harder to get.

Karlsson will never be good defensively so he will continue to get offensive opportunities.

Phaneuf learned to be a 1st pair D on the job here in Toronto. His offensive totals should have been expected to drop with his new assignment.

He can be used defensively or for more offense depending on who he is paired with in the future. Match him with a defensive stud or top all purpose defenseman and free him up to be more offensive and we see the totals go up at least some. imo But he's always going to see tougher competition than he did when he put up 20 goals and/or 60 points in Calgary.

The difference between Colorado and the Leafs was 12 points. Pogge had 6 decisions that year, 1-4-1, three points. No guarantee Pogge goes 0-6 even if he played. We were never getting Duchene except in Fantasy Land.

What does this represent? Why not Kane, Toews, Skinner, Hall and many others  who have done as well as those on this list? Why does it start in 2009? Seems like a very selective, omitting, misleading list.

Big argument down below about shoulda, woulda, coulda with draft picks.

All I know is if lukethenuke's uncle Jimmy would have drafted Bryan Trottier (#22) at #13 in 1974, instead of Jack Valiquette, we probably would have won 5 Cups by now and this conversation wouldn't be happening..   lol

@loomx  Not that it's going to change your argument but I'm not so sure Boston would have matched like someone said. Boston spent money on other players that summer (Wideman?) and were tight for cap space thinking they could sign Kessel cheaper.

Anyway I'm not going to play this what if fantasy game.

You can say we could have had Knight OR we could have had Saad but we never could have had both. Those 2nd round picks were traded for each other. What we gave up was a 3rd round pick (Michael Paliotta) of unknown value right now.

@vinoaAs I said, I'm only interested in the Leafs, and don't consider MLS championships as major or similar to the salary cap NHL. Some will disagree.

In this town I don't think the Leafs need Leiweke to get attention. I found his claim that he got people talking with the removal of historical photos, odd. Leafs fans are 24/7 anyway, without Tim.

If the GM or Shanahan ask for help, fine.

"Leiweke on FAN 590 "I've been a part of organizations that have this type of structure and we did quite well" brought up LA Lakers."

Some thoughts and questions about Tim Leiweke.

What did Tim contribute to the 5 most recent NBA championship wins of the Lakers?

Mitch Kupchak became GM of the Lakers 2 years before Leiweke was hired as President of L.A. Kings in 1996 (not AEG) and was in that position for the next 20 years.

As Pres. of the Kings did Leiweke have ANY involvement with the Lakers in the early days?

Did Leiweke have any influence when the Lakers acquiring Kobe Bryant in 1996? My guess is no.

Did Leiweke have anything to do with the Lakers signing FA Shaquille O'Neal in 1996?

Leiweke did not become CEO and President of AEG (minority share-holder of the L.A Lakers) until sometime in 2001. Prior positions within AEG, the parent company and owner of the Kings, unknown.

Was Leiweke involved with the Lakers when they brought Phil Jackson out of retirement to coach the Lakers in 1999?

Did Mitch Kupchak and Phil Jackson need any advice from Leiweke on how to operate a basketball team in the NBA?

From Tim Leiweke's profile at MLSE:

"During Leiweke's time at AEG, he fostered a culture of winning which saw his teams claim 11 championships, most recently being the 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and the 2011 and 2012 MLS Cup Champion L.A. Galaxy".

What are those 11 championships and how much were they "fostered"?

How many of the Lakers 5 most recent championships would this include? I would think at least the first 1 or 2 (2000, 2001) would not be counted.

Tim Leiweke is an excellent BUSINESS man in the sports and entertainment industries and a good choice to be the face and new star of MLSE. Didn't hurt that he told the board that he could double the value of MLSE in 5-7 years... oh and something about the board saying "WHY?" and Tim saying " WHY NOT".  lol

Until Brendan Shanahan was brought in there was a lot of talk about what Tim would/should do and what kind of players or coaches Tim would want, from fans.

All Tim should ever do with the day to day running of the Leafs is hire a GM or a President if that's the structure he wants, and then get out of the way unless asked to help. Oversight from a distance, that's all.

Shanahan sounds like he might let his GM do the job without too much meddling, Good, that's the way it should be imo. We won't have top GM talent here if the job means being a puppet.

Personally I don't think Tim has had that much influence in the only sport that I care about. And I'm not sure how valuable His "fostering" is or has been with other teams in the past.

Tim Leiweke should now stay out of the way and do what he does well. He will no doubt get some face time with the media as the star at MLSE and won't be shy when it comes to garnering credit for any good that is "fostered".  imo

So continue the good work Tim and good luck.  (Psst.  Not so sure your close involvement with the players is a great idea.)
