@JMAC17 A long term deal would be ideal I agree, but that is why we probably won't see any deal announced for Jake until after Franson and Reimer are settled and Nonis has a better idea of the CAP situation.
2 days, 9 hours ago on The Cody Franson Arbitration: What is he Worth?
@Mattmark Franson can not sign an offer sheet as he elected for arbitration.
2 days, 10 hours ago on The Cody Franson Arbitration: What is he Worth?
@Dewy Keon Hogturd I don't think so. I just think it's a negotiating tactic to try and settle for over 3 or have the arbitrator award in that area.
To me Nonis did low ball at 2 mil and that is a negotiating tactic as well.
Look at Frason's history defensively speaking.
He couldn't earn the trust of Wilson and was quite often a healthy scratch.
He played fairly well on the third pairing with Mark Fraser being sheltered during the shortened season.
He was then given a more prominent role last year playing against tougher competition and did not do so well.
So would you pay him as a top 4 D? IMO No.
Would you pay him as a 3rd pairing D? IMO No.
Because he has the offensive ability especially on the power play IMO he should be paid somewhere in between the 2.
@.JVR. @TOHockeyNut I don't think that there is any date deadline for offer sheets on RFA that are unsigned and where arbitration was not chosen. Didn't Calgary Offer sheet ROR in September?
@mtommy @Optimustic @.JVR. I believe that since Franson filed for arbitration offer sheets are no longer in question.
@Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs Nonis coming in at 2 is about as rude as Franson coming in at 4.2.

5 months, 2 weeks ago on Game Review: Game #58, Panthers 4 vs. Leafs 1
After watching last nights game it looks like Nonis will have to have another long talk with the players. The performance, or lack there of, last night was an embarrassment for what are supposed to be professionals and very high payed ones at that. There are no excuses. The players, or most of them anyway, just basically took the night off and did not compete.
If this team misses the playoffs we can only look back at this and other games like it that cost them the berth.

Bodie played a great game tonight in his limited roll.
I was a little bored so I looked at the actual salary payroll (Not CAP Payroll) of the Leafs opening day roster as it looks now. With Liles demoted the Leafs will actually have one of the lowest "Actual salary payrolls for their active roster" in the league and that includes Clarkson who will be out the first 10 games. For the 22 man roster the total is only 54,835,000 plus potential bonuses. This number is pretty much in the same ball park as Colorado, Phoenix, Buffalo and Florida. Only Ottawa, Calgary and the New York Islanders will be paying significantly less for the actual on ice product in salary payroll.
This was quite shocking to see.

@CanuckUKinToronto @TOHockeyNut @Burtonboy Ashton is exempt from waivers.
@Burtonboy @CanuckUKinToronto @TOHockeyNut A Player can not be put on LTIR until Tuesday and teams have to be cap compliant on Monday. Maybe Ashton doesn't make the team either as a way to pick up additional depth or as I said a trade does happen first. There are still options available to Nonis.
Nonis may not be done yet. He will be watching the waiver wire closely to maybe pick up some depth at center. Other teams are in the same boat as the Leafs being so close to the CAP. Trades could still happen as well. This could be an interesting next 24 hours.
@CanuckUKinToronto There might be no more cuts until the last minute to keep other teams guessing on who might be available on waivers.

@Loric76 @TOHockeyNut Nope, just speculating on what options are available and if Liles is no longer in the plans for Nonis then he may need to go this route to kind of force Liles hand.
@Loric76 @TOHockeyNut Just makes sense now with Franson signed and Liles having the Modified NTC. As I said there could be a deal in place, I did not say that there was one.
Well it now looks as if Liles may be demoted as a way to get him to waive his Modified NTC. There could be a deal in place pending Liles approval of the destination.

9 months, 4 weeks ago on Dave Poulin: CapGeek not really accurate, hints Kessel contract could develop soon
FYI on Franson - Pulled this from an old article about playing overseas and waivers.
While Article 13:23 in the pre-2012-13 CBA specified that any player who plays in Europe after start of NHL regular season needs to clear waivers to play in the same season in the NHL, the recent Memorandum of Understanding between the league and Players' Association says all players on a club's reserve list and RFA list will be exempt from the application of 13:23.
Therefore, teams can now sign their own restricted free agents or draft picks out of Europe in mid-season and get them into their NHL lineup without risking them being plucked off the wire.
Posted this after reading below that Leafs would risk loosing Franson if he signed in Europe.

@hoolihan I don't believe that Ryan O'Rielly had to clear waivers when Colorado matched the offer sheet from Calgary last year. Why would this be different?
9 months, 4 weeks ago on Preseason Post Game #6: Senators 3 at Leafs 2
@Burtonboy Joe has not shown well in this preseason at all and really has no history of performing well in the NHL. Sure he showed OK in the playoffs last season in the 2 games he got into, but overall he has not translated his game to the NHL. I would not be surprised if he passed through waivers unclaimed. I could see Nonis making a move for further depth at center at some point as Big Joe is just not getting it done.
@Cameron19 @maple1967leafs @TOHockeyNut I guess that repeat offenders is only suspended offenders to the Wings and Rangers and other teams that Buttman tells Shanny to apply it to. Oh wait there will never be repeat offenders to those teams as they will never have suspensions. What was I thinking.

@maple1967leafs @TOHockeyNut How many times have you seen a goalie do the 2 handed chop (as best as a goalie can do with his gloves on) at the ankles of a player in front of the net. Most goalies would be repeat offenders.
The next time a goal tender swings his stick at a players ankles (happens all the time) it will no longer be slashing it will be a 3 game suspension for intent to injure.
Is this not the ruling that Shanny just made?

@mr_hanie @mcloki On home ice it can happen as many times as the coach decides.
@mcloki Since there is no talk of any discipline for Scott going after Kessel the way he did the NHL has already made a statement that it is OK to do this. It is now open season on star players by the goons of the league. I am not saying that most fighters in the league will do this, but now they know they can without the risk of discipline form the league.Hits to the head are not allowed unless it is with a fist from a 270 pound 6'8" fighter.
Well with Clarkson suspended, McLaren injured and Franson unsigned here is my guess at the opening day line up if there are not any trades.

10 months ago on Leafs Notebook: Preseason Edition – September 23
@Yaknowwhat @Alec Brownscombe That might just be the message the NHL sends here. Bad message to send, but the way the NHL is handling most of these situations it won't surprise me a bit.
@supercilious @TOHockeyNut Clarkson's will probably be automatic but the others are the question. Kessel's slashes were at the feet of Scott and to me showed no intent to injure where as Scott jumping Kessel alone shows intent to injure.
10 months ago on Fight Night in Toronto: Preseason Post Game #5 – Leafs 5 vs. Sabres 3
It is going to be really interesting to see how the league handles this.
Is the league going to say that a coach putting a skilled line out against a line that was put on the ice to start something in order to try and diffuse the situation is the wrong thing to do? RC thinks he made a mistake and he may have depending on how the league handles it.
Is the league going to say that it is OK for the biggest fighters in the league to jump the best players in the league? If so then Carlyle should line up Orr, McLaren, Devane, Fraser and McWilliam out against Vanek, Hodgeson etc. the next time they play with the plan of jumping these guys and let the fun begin. Let's see if anyone comes off the Buffalo bench to save them.
Is the league going to say that the best players in the league are not going to be able to defend themselves any way they can against the biggest fighters in the league when jumped? Does the league prefer to have the Stamkos', St Louis', Kane's and Kessel's of the league on IR for most of the season? If Kessel gets suspended for intent to injure, how does Scott a 6'8 270+ pound fighter jumping a 6'0 200 pond skilled player not classify as intent to injure? In a US court self defense would win this case in a flash.
I am not defending Clarkson for leaving the bench and the rules are in place to prevent bench clearing brawls, but I can understand why he did it. He did it to defend one of the best players in the league and Kessel defended himself the best way he knew how. He may have over done it a little though.

@JMAC17 @TOHockeyNut @wiski Last season Frattin had a shooting percentage of 16.7 compared to Kadri at 16.8. MacA was 12.9 the same as JVR and well Grabs was only at 11.3 and Kessel at 12.4. The only really low percentage was Komarov at 7.8, but did we really get rid of him. Like I said what has he been smoking.
@wiski What has he been smoking?
@Dangle_My_Berries 5.7 over 2 years maybe, not over 3. That works out to 2.85 per which fits in just right with the comparisons in the blog. Just sign it Kadri and lets play some hockey.
@Yaknowwhat That would be exchanging depth on one wing for the other. Would you trade Kulemin for Raymond?
10 months, 2 weeks ago on Leafs invite winger Mason Raymond to camp
I don't see Raymond as a bad depth signing for the right price. We are not too deep on left wing and could use someone who could play up and down the line up. An injury to JVR or Lupul and we would be in trouble on the left side. I just don't see how Nonis is going to fit this in under the cap without moving Liles.
@GeorgeCastanza @TOHockeyNut I am looking forward to seeing his progression this year as well. I think he can step it up and be a great player for a long time. I just don't think that he has proven it yet which is why I don't feel he deserves the big money yet.
10 months, 2 weeks ago on Updates in the Kadri and Franson Watch
IMO Kadri played in a pretty sheltered roll during most of the season last year. At the end of the season while playing against tougher competition he struggled to maintain the production (the tail off every one is talking about). For this reason I feel Kadri needs to prove he can produce against the leagues best in order to cash in on a big money contract and I don't believe he has done that yet. Tavares and Duschene have both proven that they can produce against the leagues best and Kadri has not.

@Jordan29 @wendelsfist Fraser won't get an award large enough to walk away from. I can't see him getting awarded more than 3.5 per as 1.5 would be a stretch. Gunnersson on the other hand could get interesting.
@wendelsfist @TOHockeyNut Kadri is not eligible for Arbitration so he could not file. It is never good to go to Arbitration as it creates bad feelings between the player and the organization.

@Pent_House @TOHockeyNut @MaxwellHowe Hey I hope he can stick with the club and can develop into what the Leafs management and all of us hoped. I am just saying every year that passes bye the odds go down. I was not saying his career would be over Geez, just that he may fall out of the Leafs plans. We are a little sensitive over big Joe aren't we.
@Pent_House @TOHockeyNut @MaxwellHowe He will be 24 in January. If he can't get to be a regular in the line up this year he just may never get there. He has not been able to translate his game to the NHL at this point.
@MaxwellHowe Do or die year for him I would think.
@Burtonboy All the RFA Defense may end up filing.
IMO Upgrades on the forwards have been made in certain areas, but depth has been sacrificed for it. McCarthur, Frattin ans Komarov out and only Clarkson in.
We will need Colborne or others being promoted to really step up and prove that they can really contribute at the NHL level or if we get a couple long term injuries in our top 6 I don't see us being in the race.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->With the bulk of the storm over, where do the Leafs stand?<!--:-->
Overall I would say that now we are better in goal with the addition of Bernier.
Our top 6 is better with the addition of Clarkson.
Our bottom 6 has Bolland as an upgrade, but we are weaker on the wings now. We will either need to hope we have someone on the Marlies that can step up or will have to make another move to upgrade there. I would not be surprised if Nonis signs a UFA winger on a 1 mil contract as insurance as right now we have only Kulemin, Orr and McLaren plus a promotion from the Marlies as wingers. Colbourne if and when signed could be used on the wing or I guess McClement could be used on the wing as another option.Given that we sign our RFAs on defense it looks like any changes will most likely come internally. I was really hoping for an upgrade on defense, but there are not many upgrades available through UFAs. A trade of Liles plus for an experienced shut down D would be ideal but I'm not counting on it happening. I would not be surprised to see Marshall break into the line up as Eakins though very highly of him and figured he could easily be our next Mark Fraser from last year coming out of really no where to play effectively in the NHL.
Lets all wait and see what Nonis' next move is.

Scrivens replaced with Bernier (definite upgrade)
Grabovski replaced with Bolland (upgraded on the defensive/shut down role)
We need upgrades to
Frattin with ?
Komarov with ?
Bozak with ?
McCarthur with ?

@theacs1966 @jayman87 We already moved two cheap cap hit in Scrivens and Frattin. I sure hope Nonis doesn't move Gardiner as he will be the best value on our roster this year.
I don't see enough available through UFA that will fill the holes that have been created and fit in under the cap. If there is not a big trade coming, I don't see this team being any stronger than last year.

@4evrblue @TOHockeyNut He may be close, but you don't pencil a player in that may be close to being ready.
I don't know why many on here are penciling Colborne in the line up for next year. He played 10 games in 2011-2012 for the Leafs and 5 regular season games and 2 playoff games with the Leafs this season. He d.id not register a single point this year on the Leafs. If Nonis is penciling him in we are in big trouble.

Would teams have not had to put players on waivers today in order to buy them out prior to the deadline or is tomorrow the deadline for waivers with the players clearing Friday?
@JMAC17 @TheCanucksnaphook @djamon I would not offer any more than 4, but like us all we are just armchair GMs
@Area49th I think it's the other way around.
@ingy56 @TOHockeyNut Return engagements are always possible. I can't recall if he left on good terms or not though.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Pre-UFA Opens<!--:-->
@Black_Hawk @TOHockeyNut @ingy56 Internal budget is no way near the cap ceiling I don't think.
@ingy56 Making room for Horton?
@Loric76 I guess he didn't want to have to play any playoff games.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Bozak wants 8 years, 4.5+ million?; Agent Don Meehan believes MacArthur will test UFA<!--:-->
If that was the offer from Bozak's camp and I'm Nonis I just put a final offer on the table and start focusing my efforts elsewhere. No time to deal with crap like that.
@Cameron19 Just hoping another team picks them up. Also opens up a little cap room for the summer where you can go 10% over cap.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Where does Dave Bolland fit in?<!--:-->
@ingy56 @mcloki @TheCanucksnaphook @Numbersgame No longer have a forth next year. We obtained two from Edmonton and Phoenix in the Lombardi and Brown deals and traded one for O'Byrne and 2 for Bolland.
@peterbleafs @TOHockeyNut I was thinking he might be packaged as part of a bigger deal.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Draft Day Recap: Leafs get deeper at center<!--:-->
So do you think that Colborne is going to be on the trade block now that we have picked up Bolland? I don't see where he would fit in now other than being that extra forward.
@4evrblue @MaxwellHowe Stastny is UFA after next year. He may want to leave the Avs to play a more prominent role elsewhere. He will be #3 on the depth chart once McKinnen gets up to speed in the NHL most likely.
@DWCMLHS @Pent_House @ingy56 No cap left
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Leafs draft Carter Verhaeghe in third round<!--:-->
@Alec Brownscombe He will have to fill a pretty big role based on his cap hit. He is an over paid player which is why he was on the market. Time will tell but I don't like the trade. At the trade deadline a third or forth line guy would only go for a third rounder.
@LeoTheLion Just too high a cap hit for a third line player
After the trade for Bolland for Nonis to sign any significant UFA he is going to have to shed salary either through buy outs or trade.

@Loric76 Big possibility there.

@ingy56 Healy would have him going for 5 first round picks don't you think.
@Bon Scott was a Leaf fan @TerrancePelletier He has not really done anything yet since Burke left. I will reserve my judgement to when I see what we have for a team and depth come September.
@DWCMLHS @TOHockeyNut @palmspringsleafer That's your opinion. I have mine. He has been given the minutes because he has been our best option over the last few years.
@DWCMLHS @palmspringsleafer To me that's the only problem with Dion is that when his minutes go up he starts to make many huge mistakes. He is not really a minute munching D. He is a great D up to about 20-22 minutes but after that he starts to fail miserably. I don't know if it's conditioning or what, but a real minute muncher he is not.
@Leafs_17 Good. Would have cost too much anyway
1 year ago on <!--:en-->DRAFT DAY!<!--:-->
@Cameron19 I get the feeling today is going to be a nothing day for the
leafs as far as trades go.
@Great Dane Salary would have to be coming back I would think so I just don't see it unless it's a huge trade with multiple pieces involved.
@wiski That was supposed to say Ship
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Draft Weekend: Who we takin’?<!--:-->
@wiski Shit it to my house and I will count it just to make sure!
@4evrblue @TOHockeyNut Something has got to give as they say.
Currently on the trade block from rumors going around.
1. High first round picks - minimum cost: your first round pick your best prospect and your best value roster player.
2. players that if I don't trade I am going to have to buy out. cost: anything I can get, but I won't take back salary.
3. players that want to be payed an incredible amount on an extension. cost: 1st round pick, your best prospect and a great valued roster player.
4. Players I over paid on my roster that I can't really afford to keep given that the cap is going down. cost 1st rounder and 2 second rounders.
Wait it out Nonis. It's got to get better.
@Cameron19 @TOHockeyNut My point is that the GMs should not be giving out these huge contracts where you have 3 players taking up 40% of the CAP. You can't put together an elite TEAM that way.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Just Sayin’, Vinny<!--:-->
If you look at the rosters of the 2 teams that made it to the finals this year not one players CAP hit was more than 7 mil per and the highest was Chara at just shy of 7. On the Hawks Kane and Toews top the CAP hits at 6.3.I'm just saying. And that was with the CAP at 70 mil.
Hello GMs out there what are you doing?
@theacs1966 @MaxwellHowe IMO The NHL changed their minds and allowed 1 amnesty buy out before the season started because Montreal told Gomez to stay home and not report to camp. Mon was worried about injuries that would have prevented a buy out.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Thursday Morning Mashup: Letang Prefers Toronto?<!--:-->
@KurtWhite @Sic_Transit_Gloria Re entry waivers no longer exist in the new CBA in think.
Would you prefer Grabo for 4 years at 5.5 per or Vinnie for 4 years at 5.5 per?
@Komas Taberle Better yet Vinnie signs a long term deal say 5 years on the cheap and Toronto trades Vinnie back to Tampa next year.
If Letang wants to come to Toronto then let him play out his final year and lets talk turkey then. Let him get traded to another team and see what he can do without the offense that the Pens have.
We have Liles, Gardner and Franson who are offensive D now with Rielly in the pipe. What we need now is a solid minute munching shut down D.
1 year ago on Points for Trying
@skiingallday @MaxwellHowe @TheCanucksnaphook @Jordan29 Chicago also had 2 players whose CAP was about 2.5 million less than there actual salary.
@-Keon- Both teams started it really. Zetterburg and Hossa I beleive were the first 2 that payed players into their 40s.
As I mentioned in the previous thread the Hawks were the ones that started the long term front loaded contracts with the Hossa deal I believe and they now have the opportunity to buy out that contract as an amnesty buy out and not have any penalty against the CAP. If this is allowed then anything to do with amnesty buy outs should be allowed.
@Dink @rustynail Some of the smaller market teams need all the help they can get. We pay them just to exist.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->MLHS 2013 Mock Draft – Part 1<!--:-->
@Loric76 @Black_Hawk Or the Hawks
If the Hawks are allowed to buy out Hossa from one of the biggest front loaded contracts as an amnesty buy out then anything should be allowed. The Hawks have now won 2 Stanley Cups through CAP circumvention and to not have them pay down the road is criminal compares to what was proposed in the TO Tampa potential deal.
@daniel marois Leafs beating Kings in the final with Bernier in net would do it.

1 year ago on <!--:en-->The off season is here<!--:-->
@Black_Hawk @Burtonboy Just until UFA starts and then the window closes until next year
@Black_Hawk @TOHockeyNut @Pent_House We already have too many unknowns
@Pent_House I don't think that Nonis would trade for another RFA, but a sign and trade is still possible. I hope not though.
@sniperstar @Black_Hawk @Loric76 Marlies will need to pick up another goalie as they will need to carry 3 just in case the Leafs need a call up due to injury.
@Pent_House @TOHockeyNut For the Leafs it has.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Weekend at Bernier’s<!--:-->
I can't believe Nonnis retained 500K in salary in this deal.
Off season moves so far. Sign AHL goalie and Colton Orr and now this trade.
So far my off season rating for Nonnis F-. He has a long way to go to get a passing grade from me.
@Alec Brownscombe Not me either.
@-Keon- We only have 11 players signed. 12 with Bernier. There is lots of spots available.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->Leafs Acquire Jonathan Bernier from Kings<!--:-->
@Jay_Berg @TOHockeyNut @leafmealone They did not have the CAP space to match.
@leafmealone @TOHockeyNut If we had offer sheeted LA on him we would only have to give up a second. Instead we gave up a second and 2 other assets. Huge over payment.
I don't like this at all. We give up 2 very reasonably priced assets in Frattin and Scrivens (925,000 and 612,500) for and RFA looking for a big raise and the possibility of getting into an offer sheet situation. I sure hope that Nonnis already has an agreement on a contract in place. We now have only 11 players signed for next season and less CAP room per player to fill the gaps.
This was also a huge over payment since a second rounder is all that you would probably have to pay on an offer sheet.
@whalz If they are not qualified they would become UFAs. Offer sheets can still come until they are signed.
1 year ago on <!--:en-->2013 Draft Profile Series – Anthony Mantha<!--:-->
I don't see the Leafs signing Clarkson. The price is just going to be too high and we already have a large percentage of the CAP tied up in wingers. With the price tag of 4 mil plus then Kulemin would have to be traded with a cheaper option brought in or /up to replace him.
1 year, 1 month ago on <!--:en-->Monday Morning Armchair GM: Clarkson vs. MacArthur<!--:-->
@wiski @Black_Hawk @peterbleafs Yes for 1.2 per. 4 mil per is too much for Franson. What then do you give Gards next year if he plays through the year like he did in the playoffs if you just payed Franson 4 per. I would go to maybe 3.5 tops per on a long term deal.
