@JMAC17 A long term deal would be ideal I agree, but that is why we probably won't see any deal announced for Jake until after Franson and Reimer are settled and Nonis has a better idea of the CAP situation.

@Dewy Keon Hogturd I don't think so. I just think it's a negotiating tactic to try and settle for over 3 or have the arbitrator award in that area.

To me Nonis did low ball at 2 mil and that is a negotiating tactic as well.

Look at Frason's history defensively speaking.

He couldn't earn the trust of Wilson and was quite often a healthy scratch.

He played fairly well on the third pairing with Mark Fraser being sheltered during the shortened season.

He was then given a more prominent role last year playing against tougher competition and did not do so well.

So would you pay him as a top 4 D? IMO No.

Would you pay him as a 3rd pairing D? IMO No.

Because he has the offensive ability especially on the power play IMO he should be paid somewhere in between the 2.

After watching last nights game it looks like Nonis will have to have another long talk with the players. The performance, or lack there of, last night was an embarrassment for what are supposed to be professionals and very high payed ones at that. There are no excuses. The players, or most of them anyway, just basically took the night off and did not compete.

If this team misses the playoffs we can only look back at this and other games like it that cost them the berth.

I was a little bored so I looked at the actual salary payroll (Not CAP Payroll) of the Leafs opening day roster as it looks now. With Liles demoted the Leafs will actually have one of the lowest "Actual salary payrolls for their active roster" in the league and that includes Clarkson who will be out the first 10 games. For the 22 man roster the total is only 54,835,000 plus potential bonuses. This number is pretty much in the same ball park as Colorado, Phoenix, Buffalo and Florida. Only Ottawa, Calgary and the New York Islanders will be paying significantly less for the actual on ice product in salary payroll.

This was quite shocking to see.

FYI on Franson - Pulled this from an old article about playing overseas and waivers.

While Article 13:23 in the pre-2012-13 CBA specified that any player who plays in Europe after start of NHL regular season needs to clear waivers to play in the same season in the NHL, the recent Memorandum of Understanding between the league and Players' Association says all players on a club's reserve list and RFA list will be exempt from the application of 13:23.

Therefore, teams can now sign their own restricted free agents or draft picks out of Europe in mid-season and get them into their NHL lineup without risking them being plucked off the wire.

Posted this after reading below that Leafs would risk loosing Franson if he signed in Europe.

It is going to be really interesting to see how the league handles this.

Is the league going to say that a coach putting a skilled line out against a line that was put on the ice to start something in order to try and diffuse the situation is the wrong thing to do? RC thinks he made a mistake and he may have depending on how the league handles it.

Is the league going to say that it is OK for the biggest fighters in the league to jump the best players in the league?  If so then Carlyle should line up Orr, McLaren, Devane, Fraser and McWilliam out against Vanek, Hodgeson etc. the next time they play with the plan of jumping these guys and let the fun begin. Let's see if anyone comes off the Buffalo bench to save them.

Is the league going to say that the best players in the league are not going to be able to defend themselves any way they can against the biggest fighters in the league when jumped? Does the league prefer to have  the Stamkos', St Louis', Kane's  and Kessel's of the league on IR for most of the season? If Kessel gets suspended for intent to injure, how does Scott a 6'8 270+ pound fighter jumping a 6'0 200 pond skilled player not classify as intent to injure? In a US court self defense would win this case in a flash.

I am not defending Clarkson for leaving the bench and the rules are in place to prevent bench clearing brawls, but I can understand why he did it. He did it to defend one of the best players in the league and Kessel defended himself the best way he knew how. He may have over done it a little though.

IMO Kadri played in a pretty sheltered roll during most of the season last year. At the end of the season while playing against tougher competition he struggled to maintain the production  (the tail off every one is talking about). For this reason I feel Kadri needs to prove he can produce against the leagues best in order to cash in on a big money contract and I don't believe he has done that yet. Tavares and Duschene have both proven that they can produce against the leagues best and Kadri has not.

IMO Upgrades on the forwards have been made in certain areas, but depth has been sacrificed for it.  McCarthur, Frattin ans Komarov out and only Clarkson in.

We will need Colborne or others being promoted to really step up and prove that they can really contribute at the NHL level or if we get a couple long term injuries in our top 6 I don't see us being in the race.

1 year ago on <!--:en-->With the bulk of the storm over, where do the Leafs stand?<!--:-->

Reply

Overall I would say that now we are better in goal with the addition of Bernier.

Our top 6 is better with the addition of Clarkson.

Our bottom 6 has Bolland as an upgrade, but we are weaker on the wings now. We will either need to hope we have someone on the Marlies that can step up or will have to make another move to upgrade there. I would not be surprised if Nonis signs a UFA winger on a 1 mil contract as insurance as right now we have only Kulemin, Orr and McLaren plus a promotion from the Marlies as wingers. Colbourne if and when signed could be used on the wing or I guess McClement could be used on the wing as another option.

Given that we sign our RFAs on defense it looks like any changes will most likely come internally. I was really hoping for an upgrade on defense, but there are not many upgrades available through UFAs. A trade of Liles plus for an experienced shut down D would be ideal but I'm not counting on it happening. I would not be surprised to see Marshall break into the line up as Eakins though very highly of him and figured he could easily be our next Mark Fraser from last year coming out of really no where to play effectively in the NHL.

Lets all wait and see what Nonis' next move is.

Assuming that we sing our RFAs that were on the roster last year, the upgrades required are as follows.

Scrivens replaced with Bernier (definite upgrade)

Grabovski replaced with Bolland (upgraded on the defensive/shut down role)

We need upgrades to

Frattin with ?

Komarov with ?

Bozak with ?

McCarthur with ?

Fill in the blanks with 12 mil in CAP space and there is your team.

Currently on the trade block from rumors going around.

1. High first round picks - minimum cost: your first round pick your best prospect and your best value roster player.

2. players that if I don't trade I am going to have to buy out. cost: anything I can get, but I won't take back salary.

3. players that want to be payed an incredible amount on an extension. cost: 1st round pick, your best prospect and a great valued roster player.

4. Players I over paid on my roster that I can't really afford to keep given that the cap is going down. cost 1st rounder and 2 second rounders.

Wait it out Nonis. It's got to get better.

@Cameron19 @TOHockeyNut My point is that the GMs should not be giving out these huge contracts where you have 3 players taking up 40% of the CAP. You can't put together an elite TEAM that way.

If you look at the rosters of the 2 teams that made it to the finals this year not one players CAP hit was more than 7 mil per and the highest was Chara at just shy of 7. On the Hawks  Kane and Toews top the CAP hits at 6.3.

I'm just saying. And that was with the CAP at 70 mil.

If Letang wants to come to Toronto then let him play out his final year and lets talk turkey then. Let him get traded to another team and see what he can do without the offense that the Pens have.

As I mentioned in the previous thread the Hawks were the ones that started the long term front loaded contracts with the Hossa deal I believe and they now have the opportunity to buy out that contract as an amnesty buy out and not have any penalty against the CAP. I don't like this at all. We give up 2 very reasonably priced assets in Frattin and Scrivens (925,000 and 612,500) for and RFA looking for a big raise and the possibility of getting into an offer sheet situation. I sure hope that Nonnis already has an agreement on a contract in place. We now have only 11 players signed for next season and less CAP room per player to fill the gaps.

This was also a huge over payment since a second rounder is all that you would probably have to pay on an offer sheet.
