@ingy56 @Burtonboy If he learned anything about defensive awareness, perhaps he can teach it to RC and the rest of the team.  :-)

@CanuckUKinToronto @Optimustic @.JVR. Yeah,  Ashton is a good example. He's played in the NHL, but hasn't really been playing with the line mates that give him a chance to see what he has offensively.  It'd be nice to see him with Kadri, JVR, Kessel, or some of the other offensive prospects.

@CanuckUKinToronto @Optimustic @.JVR. Yeah, but preseason games are often a disappointment to me.  too many of the regulars play llke the games just don't matter. They know they'll make the team so why put in any effort, it's just an exercise to get into game shape.

@.JVR. Yup it's hockey and it's going to be good to get a chance to see some of the prospects that we don't see often.  It may be better than the regular pre season games to me.

Here's another solid looking D prospect.  It seems these guys are expecting that they may have to take the body out sometimes.  Unlike the way Kaberle played.

@TML__fan The Sabres used to have a very good PK.  They put a lot of pressure on the point men and forced them to make quick decisions.  Often times quick decisions become poor decisions.

@Luke_R @Optimustic I'd have to really like him, but I know what you're saying.   I do think that they're gearing up for a cup run, so prospects may not be as important as experience and leadership.

@Luke_R @Optimustic @Murph2417 @Cameron19 I thought you meant Faksa or Gaunce instead of Faksa and Gaunce.

Just spitballin is what I was doing too.  Trying to drum up some hockey conversation.   Plus I know they're looking for D and we're looking for top 6 forwards.

@Cameron19 @Optimustic True enough, his defensive shortcomings may have as much to do with our systems( of lack thereof) so he may be more valuable to another team who thinks they could make him work in their system.

@Luke_R @Murph2417 @Optimustic @Cameron19 I'd do that deal in a heartbeat, but does Dallas?   I'm not so sure.  I've never been a fan of Biggs though.

@Murph2417 @Optimustic @Cameron19 Leivo has potential for sure, but I like the Centre over the winger.   Like I said, I'm not sure how good Faksa is going to be.

@Cameron19 @Optimustic I don't consider Franson to be that good of a player, and I'm not sure how good Faksa is.  I don't believe he's played much in the NHL yet.  That said, he was highly touted during his draft year, so I don't think they'd give him away for nothing.

I'd think maybe Leivo and Franson.

With the Stars looking to add to their D-core,  and the same being on of our stronger areas of depth, what would it take to get a good prospect out of Dallas for Franson  + ?  I'm thinking of a player like Faksa, though we'd have to add a good prospect I'd think.

@Hmmm @Optimustic @Xxxxxnew Agreed, if the 3rd and 4th lines improve dramatically from last year, it should help the whole team.  It's been mentioned often that the top line was burned out because RC couldn't trust the rest of the lineup

.  That said, RC is still the coach so I'm not going to buy into anything new until I see it with my own eyes.   He didn't know how to fix the problems last year so I'm not ready to believe in him until he proves himself.

@Xxxxxnew @Optimustic Yeah, I wasn't posting it because I'm a Frattin fan, ( though I do like and hope the best for him) but at least it's a story.  I will say that Frattin is the type of player that may be able to play most anywhere in the lineup if he sticks.  Flexibility may be his biggest asset.

Good article Dave.  Just pointing out a minor typo after the second graph, Bozak's IPP should read 62nd of 346 instead of 326, to reflect what the graph says.

I don't feel that the top line scoring production was a problem at all last season.  If we can vastly improve our d-zone pressure and spend more time in the o-zone, we'll be much better off, especially if that translates to more production from the bottom 6 \ 9.

Very good analysis Anthony:   You mention that it;s not just the players because "many times we have heard player X has been acquired and he is a good penalty killer (Jason Blake, Colby Armstrong, Kris Versteeg, Hal Gill, Pavel Kubina, etc). Did all these guys suddenly forget how to run a box-diamond PK? " , the same thing apples to our defence in general.

 Looking forward to part-2.
