Thanks for the series Anthony.  It's obvious that the organization has developed a better group of players ( judging by what we see on the Marlies), and it's good to hear that they're continuing to focus on drafting and developing the kids.

Let's hope Franson is going to play for his UFA contract and earn a good one.  He hasn't looked like anything special defensively, but TO hasn't had any D=man that has looked special defensively in the recent past.  Maybe, just maybe it's the system( or lack of a system) that is our problem.

@.JVR. @Jmessih http://mapleleafshotstove.com/2014/07/18/the-cody-franson-arbitration-what-is-he-worth/ In the last paragraph, Elliot Saccucci explains that Franny can be traded after the arbitration hearing.   Though he seems to suggest that the Leafs will likely have him manning the point on the PP for another year anyway.

@.JVR. Yes, if he was to get an offer sheet, then he couldn't be traded for one year.

@Xxxxxnew @Optimustic @dlb Mad Sure seems like it sometimes, maybe they feel that onece they make it to the big league that they can take it easier.  Most of us could never reach their level of ability no matter how hard we tried. Not saying that they don't work to become better, but a lot of players have to put in a lot more effort and still don't make the NHL.

@dlb Mad @Optimustic No, I haven't.  Seems to me that when someone is brought in to be a buffer, that there is a problem though.   Even if it isn't RC's fault, they aren't going to continually replace the roster, eventually the coach will have to go.

@Cloud09 @Optimustic Yup, and that the players aren't getting along with him.  That's what I'm hoping was the reason for the poor results at the end of last season.   Either fix the problem between RC and the players or replace RC and we'll have a better season this year.

I'm way late to the party here, but when I started reading this I thought, that I'd like to get Mislav's opinion of Kontiola.   The only one of us that would have any chance to know of the player first hand.

Thanks for the article Mislav, good to here from you.

@Dewy Keon Hogturd I knew we should have held onto Gleason,  we could have traded him to Pitts for their 2nd line centre.  With the money they saved they would have likely retained salary to go along with the 4th round pick we'd get.  lol

"We were not sure what direction the Maple Leafs would be heading entering into today’s free agency period. To some degree, we still don’t."

It's clear to me that the Leafs are headed NE going into free agency.   At training camp they'll be headed pretty much due North, then turning NE in Oct.   Come mid Dec, the team will veer straight to the East until the New Year when a right turn takes them on a SE course.   Mid March sees a direction change straight to the South until they head SE late in March.   April has them going pretty much due East again.

Komarov and Stastny are the only two names that I'm really interested in.  Stastny will likely cost a lot, but will be the best centre we've had in a long while.  Not sure he'll be worth the cost, though, as I haven't seen him play a lot.  Like every year, the best deals are the ones that you don't make.

@Cameron19 @barjv01 Perhaps if all Canadian fans quit supporting the NHL,and quit allowing tax breaks for corporations who buy tickets for their employees and customers to sit and watch the games without interest, the players would have to come back or take paycuts.

@MaxwellHowe I liked Gunnar for a 5 - 6 D, but he was put in a situation that wasn't where he belonged.    I agree with you're assessment that his hip was hampering his mobility.   All the best to Carl Gunnarson, but it was likely a good time to move on for the club.

@Cameron19 They don't work here partly because of our systems.  It'd be nice to have the ability to hold a lead more often.  Not all the fault of the D, but a good team should be able to shut down other teams late in games.
