@Burtonboy seriously, Clarkson was so awful, if he rebounds they shouldn't even bother with Bill Masterton nominations, just give the award to Clarkie

I don't want to overstate the point, because I'm not sure the Leafs are trying to "Moneyball" the NHL, but this is not entirely unlike the way Billy Beane built the As once Damon and Isringhausen and Giambi left.  Add no names with some positive numbers and hope that combined they make a greater whole.

@loomx the sad part of the hockey business is that Clarkson is one of the guys guaranteed a spot

@drummond @MaxwellHowe Maybe, I don't know, but a guy like Winnik has to know there is going to be tougher competition to make the Leafs than, say, the Oilers or Flames or Jets or Senators (just to name Canadian teams that come to mind)

Just wondering - there has to be a lot of teams looking to sign a Santorelli, Booth, Winnik, Kontiola, Frattin.....Leafs aren't offering very much - is this an attractive place for those guys to play?  Leafs seem to be getting way more than their fair share of these players.

Well I gotta say, not much confidence in young Carter Ashton.  Still, overall, good for the Leafs.  Salary cap being whittled away - but I still believe Franson will be traded before the season starts

putting JVR with Kadri (and Frattin or Booth - anyone but Clarkson) would be real interesting, might really balance out the offence-  cause I don't see a lot of chemistry between Lupul and Kadri

@Greg Fenton @MaxwellHowe @The_Polish_Cannon obviously the argument is predicated on the notion it would take around $4.5 million to get him for 5 years or more.  That was your premise anyway.  Niskanen is getting $5.75, and its certainly debatable that he has had as much success as Gardiner

@Greg Fenton @The_Polish_Cannon I don't know, seems like the salary scales for Dmen took a jump this summer, there are more questionable defence men than Gardiner making more than $4 million

My vote would be to sign him long term, tho I concede there is a risk there.  Maybe this is the type of issue Dubas may be asked to assess.  Gardiner would seem to be the type of player that drives puck possession, with his ability to make plays and participate in controlled entries into the offensive zone; the only question would be whether he can improve his defensive game and limit giveaways.  From what I saw, his giveaways tend to be at the opposition blue line and occur because he hesitates when holding the blue line.

@loomx Any goaltender thats is playing or that has ever played would have been mentally and physically exhausted to be between the pipes for the Leafs.  Even save percentages are misleading IMO.  If you get 25 shots a night you can remain focus, relaxed. How relaxed and focused can any goalie be when the play is in the Leafs zone all night and 40 shots are directed at the net?
