Obviously Roman Polak is the problem with the Leafs.....

@DylanJ @leaffaninSK @MaxwellHowe You may be right.  No need to package them tho.  And the practical difficulty is Lupul has a NTC, Gardiner does not.

@hometeem @MaxwellHowe @wendelsfist He takes hits, but hes not going to do it for the sake of it.  Posters here were going on about how he slows up when approaching the boards with a man behind him  - this is fairly common practice in the NHL.  Don Cherry basically recommended it last week.  i see defencemen all around the league do the same thing.  Much of the criticism is not warranted.  He makes bewidlering decisions now and then.  But he does a lot of good things that escape notice.  And he can play a lot of minutes, skating is effortless for him.

@wendelsfist @MaxwellHowe I agree, tho the move ideally, for the Leafs, involves shedding some salary.  So the blueliner or 4th line C will have to be on a ELC in my opinion.  And thats fine

@wendelsfist Its bashing Gardiner time around here, but he has two assets that people shouldn't overlook:

1.  He's talented

2.  He cares; no one questions his work ethic or desire to be better

So c'mon guys, the chorus to trade gardiner grows louder (not really my cup of tea - Lupul is the more likely candidate), but can anyone specifically and realistically say who he could be traded to and what the return might be .  I said realistic, so that excludes the notion of a Gardiner for ROR swap.

So whats a realistic trade?  The Avalanche and the Jets need blueline depth.

I agree with @Jon5200.  We all know they have to lose sometime.....but its so grating that all the boys had to do was beat the god damn Carolina Hurricanes and they're ahead of the Habs and 1st on the division...and the Leafs delivered a stink bomb.

The media and posters here can criticize Leafs fans all they want...but sometimes perhaps , just maybe, the Leafs give the fans reasons to be bitter.

@Yaknowwhat It always seem to me that when the forwards aren't engaging, the Leafs dmen look exposed.

@Archer But the thing that riles me is they make passes with little authority or purpose, and take shots that have virtually no chance of success.  Last nite JVR came across the blue line and let go of a 50 foot wrist shot at Cam Ward, with no one in front of the net.  Now in what world is that puck going in the net?  Instead he could have threw in the puck in a corner and rushed in.  But, no, he won't do that, and neither will Kessel.

I guess they were due for a stinker.  The first goal is so important to this team, Randy should post their record when scoring first on the bulletin board so the boys come out playing with some urgency.

I do fear that  the team response to the pressure at home (salutegate) might wane once they're on the road for awhile.  And without the last change, Randy doesn't get to always shelter his "1st" line as he has been doing.

The lines really need a permanent change.  Man, last night, JVr was into the game, but overall the so called first line was again brutal in terms of defensive play - and in terms of protecting the puck, they consistently rush into the zone and try low percentage passes and shots and give the puck right back to the opposition.  Really frustrating to watch.

Saw a tweet earlier today - on this date (can't recall the year) Wayne Gretzky scored his 100th point...in his 34th game.

I wonder how often in NHL history has a team beat the best team in the league only to lose to the worse in their next game

Thats what drives me crazy about JVR-Bozak-Kessel.  They just don't protect the puck and maintain possession.  JVR takes a lousy 60 foot wrist shot on Cam Ward.  I mean, reallly, flick the god damn puck in the corner and cycle it.  Kessel too, just makes weak passes around the net with little to no chance of success. ugh

Really really want the Leafs to appreciate how embarrassing it would be to lose this game tonite and go out and play with pride...and absolutely annihilate the Hurricanes.  I want Cam Ward chased out then I want the backup chased out and Ward chased back in.

Another glorious morning!

What to do with Leo when he returns?  Assuming the so called 1st line remains intact, i think you have to move Lupul to the right side, where he should be, and go with something like this:

JVR - Bozak - Kessel

Winnik - Kadri - Santorelli

Komarov - Holland - Lupul

Panik/Booth - Smith - Clarkson

Ashton is going to be waived, and I wonder if the Leafs are going to eventually be forced to do the same with Kozun. Because I really doubt that Holzer will be waived when Polak gets back.

The trio of Franson, Bernier and Kadri are making solid cases for big $ this summer.  Can play a little hard ball with Kadri and Bernier, but in the long term the Leafs might be better off buying some of their UFA years.  Some contracts are going to have to come off the books, especially since the Leafs need to also sign Santorelli and Winnik.
