@Greg Fenton @Anthony Petrielli @B_Leaf The point is that those other teams wouldn't make that move, not that the Leafs shouldn't.

@Greg Fenton @Anthony Petrielli @B_Leaf I think everyone knows the Leafs need a 1C. They explored trading Lupul and Dion this summer. That's pretty much where it ends, especially when it comes to getting good value back (IE- not trading Kessel for a 1C stud) to evaluating the core and deciding who to keep.

Thank you for all the nice words. Have been in a meeting and just catching up now.

@B_Leaf I do believe I touched on that though when I said:

"With everything that happened and what they lacked last year, it makes it extremely difficult to evaluate the core that many wanted blown up or at least altered, because they had no support. With the pieces put in place he can now do that."

Tough to judge the best players considering they had zero support elsewhere, which I have hammered for months now.

@Cameron19 Apparently Chicago is going to try and take advantage of their window while Hossa is still good and Toews' and Kane's contract extensions aren't on the cap this year. So don't think they'd trade a top 4 rock for them. Moving Leddy and having 13 forwards to start the year might make more sense for them if that's their mindset.

I was saying no team has 6 better bottom six players than Winnik specifically, FYI.

@leafdreamer I think they were debating the value of trading down and whether it was worth it. They love Nylander.

@StanleyB4idieplease It was the other way around. Holik actually said Sundin was the toughest guy in the league to play against.

Holik had a really good career and was a top 10 pick so I wouldn't make that comparison. I don't like player comparisons in general, so I think the hope is that Gauthier's just a solid shutdown guy at C and PKer with very minimal offense, at the moment. 3-4C type, but with a presence.

@Burtonboy Moving the Marlies to Toronto was a big step in my mind. Easy to recruit players and have them in the same city as the big club.

@Jordan29 He wasn't mentioned because nobody thought he was coming here, not because he's some no-name dummy. Anyone who follows the hockey world vs. the Leafs in a bubble knew who Dubas was long before his hiring.

@Waiting4LSC I want to see what happens with Franson and Reimer first because the mix still seems a little off to me. Very happy with what they have done so far though.

@Cameron19 @Anthony Petrielli Yeah, and he's one of the highest paid players in that league. That is not the norm. The Leafs just have a lot of money and spend it unwisely.

@Cameron19 @Anthony Petrielli I would be more likely to claim a guy making 600K on a one-way deal (which is what he would have got), then a guy making 850K on a two-way. Especially if I was Carolina.

@Cameron19 @Anthony Petrielli I'm not sold Ashton is an NHLer though, and it's not good business to give a guy money just because you can.

2 weeks ago on Steve Spott on Sportsnet 590

Reply

@Cameron19 Yes, but if I'm the Leafs I'm thinking I can just get him right back on waivers down the road and only a team desperate for a player would claim Ashton in the first place. Most teams want to give their own guys in house a shot first and foremost.

That 850K is going to scare off teams as opposed to a one-way deal where he'd be making less in the NHL.
