@phaneufoundlander @Anthony Petrielli @TML__fan Teams get scared of being caught out of position if they pressure too much, but the truth is that if you sit back you're eventually just going to get picked apart anyway. The league is too good now. There are too many good players on each team to sit back and not get burned.

Reply

@ballballrun Yeah I agree with the premise of what you're saying. Just wasn't sure how you could possibly account for Kontiola! I think there's a decent chance we can include Clarkson in that B6 conversation too, and generally speaking he has a high SOG rate.

And hey, a lot of really good conversations that become very informative happen on blog comment sections.

Dave- I would note that Mason Raymond was not a B6 forward last year. He played primarily with Kadri and Lupul and was not in the bottom six forward group in terms of TOI. I would also say the same of Clarke MacArthur who was regularly a top 6 forward with Kadri and before that Grabovski. There are also a few B6 staples that are missing (Orr, McLaren) that would even things out too.

@Burtonboy Think they start the PK with say Bozak-Komarov, Bozak gets off immediately after the draw, then comes Santorelli, and then Winnik eventually replaces Komarov. Maybe it's time to toy with having regular 5v5 players come on in the last 15-30 seconds to transition back to even strength.

@Mind Bomb @Anthony Petrielli @MaxwellHowe Has a big body and bursts through lanes/traffic to prevent opportunities and get his stick on pucks. He's pretty similar to Kulie but has a more active stick. Isn't as good with the puck though.

@MaxwellHowe Yes absolutely. Haven't delved into that in detail yet for 5v5. Been watching a lot of Winnik, Santorelli and Booth lately to get acclimated to them.

@TML__fan I have started watching some Devils tape (traditionally one of the best PKs in the league) and they do a fantastic job of forechecking in the OZ on the PK. Going to see if I can do a part 3 on that.

@dlb Mad Franson looked bad, but also watch Wheeler before he even gets the puck. Winds up without being deterred, and is going full speed when he gets the puck, taking a pass from a puck carrier who is not being pressured at all either. Just can't happen.

@Bobsyouruncle @TML__fan Right, which is why I noted that it is not strictly about winning/losing draws, it is about how you pressure after you do lose the draw. Bozak did that because he was going right off, McClement did not because he was staying on regardless, so yes it does matter how many games Bozak played.

2 weeks, 6 days ago on What’s Ailing the Maple Leafs’ Penalty Kill – Part 1

@wiski Yeah he will be, just a question as to how much PK TOI he will get per game. With Kulie and McClement both gone is he about to be one of their top two PKers, or will he be on the second unit again?

AB: In past seasons under Carlyle, the Leafs have had a dedicated checking center... Do you think there may be more of a by-committee approach of shared responsibility?

SS: That’s something that will have to morph and take care of itself. We’ve got some ideas for line combinations we’ve got up on the whiteboard, but generally speaking, those situations will need to take care of themselves in terms of where everyone fits in. As you said, we’ve got an abundance of forwards now, so that’s going to be a real interesting subplot, to see where we end up with our 12 guys.

Did not get the sense from this answer that they are going to have a dedicated checking line and rigorously line match. Some matching/zone start specifications and whatnot will obviously happen, but seems like running a four line attack is the sticking point.

@Burtonboy I'm not saying he isn't or that it doesn't matter, but remember Carlyle saying that about Clarkson during the Olympic break? I wouldn't put much stock into it.

@Greg Fenton @Anthony Petrielli @B_Leaf I think everyone knows the Leafs need a 1C. They explored trading Lupul and Dion this summer. That's pretty much where it ends, especially when it comes to getting good value back (IE- not trading Kessel for a 1C stud) to evaluating the core and deciding who to keep.

@B_Leaf I do believe I touched on that though when I said:

"With everything that happened and what they lacked last year, it makes it extremely difficult to evaluate the core that many wanted blown up or at least altered, because they had no support. With the pieces put in place he can now do that."

Tough to judge the best players considering they had zero support elsewhere, which I have hammered for months now.

@Cameron19 Apparently Chicago is going to try and take advantage of their window while Hossa is still good and Toews' and Kane's contract extensions aren't on the cap this year. So don't think they'd trade a top 4 rock for them. Moving Leddy and having 13 forwards to start the year might make more sense for them if that's their mindset.

@StanleyB4idieplease It was the other way around. Holik actually said Sundin was the toughest guy in the league to play against.

Holik had a really good career and was a top 10 pick so I wouldn't make that comparison. I don't like player comparisons in general, so I think the hope is that Gauthier's just a solid shutdown guy at C and PKer with very minimal offense, at the moment. 3-4C type, but with a presence.
