@Burtonboy @Anthony Petrielli I like Harrison. They did pretty well there given the circumstances... CAR even ate some money.

@Chris Jay @Anthony Petrielli Holzer's replacement level. Percy's better than Holzer as of this writing. I wouldn't give him away for no reason but if a desperate team like WPG wants to overpay, go nuts.

@Chris Jay @Anthony Petrielli No. Harrison went for a 6th and he's way better than Holzer.

Leafs should call WPG right now and offer Holzer for a 3rd. WPG is down their entire top 4 and the roster freeze hits at midnight. Get them in a panic move.

@Hammertownleaffan @Anthony Petrielli He started really poorly, but he's been getting better. Don't forget he had surgery in the summer and he's 37... Gonna take him quite some time to really show people what he can do.

@Hammertownleaffan By percentage he's ahead of a lot of guys people love around here... Holland, Polak, Holzer, even Gardiner and JVR.

@Komas Taberle @Anthony Petrielli I'd like to keep Ashton around because I think he can contribute in a depth role, but yes they are all easily replaceable.

Same vitriol gonna happen when Holzer gets pushed out for Polak, as it has a bit today for Kozun going down so Ashton can stay? These are no-brainer decisions, Kozun isn't an NHLer, he's a depth spark plug.

@leafmealone @Anthony Petrielli Kessel has pretty strong possession numbers away from Bozak so I'm not sure we can say that's a slam dunk. I don't think you're trying to get more from Kessel so much as you're putting him in a better position to succeed. I agree he wont ever be a truly dominant player on the wall or anything like that, but there's no way this guy should be getting outscored at evens. Just no way.

@BCLeafFan Booth has looked really good in limited ice-time to my eye. I bet he'd be very effective moving up and playing with some skill. Not sure about your January 18th question though??

@wendelsfist @Anthony Petrielli Guys like Yandle, Perron, Hall, BSchenn, etc all rumoured to be available. Good players that push a middling team like the Leafs much more firmly into a playoff spot. Some of those players flat out push them to the playoffs for sure, depending on cost.

Looking around the league, a few teams seemed primed to get killed in a trade (Edmonton, Philly, maybe LA, etc). Would really be trying to push the envelope here before the Christmas freeze hits and maybe some reality hits in.

@leafmealone Kessel and Bozak light it up on the PP together, so I'd probably still keep them together there. 5v5 though they are starting to have to hide Kessel and that can't happen. We don't know what Bozak will do without Kessel because we don't have a big enough sample yet, and I'd be willing to explore it. In a sheltered role with say, Lupul, I'm sure he'd produce reasonably okay. Not as high as he is now, but you're going to net out ahead from having Kadri and Kessel together.

@rustynail Pressure is more so on the top players now that they've added some actual bottom of the roster players. Excuses are out the window.

@.Kong. I will say this regarding JVR-- Other years I would agree, but he has been poor this season. Not sure what is up. Kessel has always struggled defensively, but he usually does enough offensively (not just scoring, but pushing play forward too) to make up for it.

@gottabe_KD @Anthony Petrielli @Hammertownleaffan Yeah Lupul is a poor two-way player, but he was showing flashes to start this year and was almost even under Wilson, with Bozak as the C. I'd at least like to explore it a little, but can definitely see why putting a guy like Winnik or Komarov there would simply be a good fix overall. Not sure what is up with JVR, basically a PP specialist right now.

@mapleaf13 Yeah you're right, it probably should be Clarkson but wont be. Guessing Smith gets pushed out, Booth stays on L4.

3 days, 2 hours ago on Leafs Notebook – December 15th

Reply

@BoneChompski @Anthony Petrielli @Ratzshite I don't think L2 would be as good possession wise with Bozak vs. Kadri (still might be okay, just not as good), but I agree Kadri alone doesn't fix L1. Probably have to play each of JVR, Bozak and Kessel on separate lines at this point.

3 days, 3 hours ago on Leafs Notebook – December 15th

@Hammertownleaffan Tough question. Probably something like Lupul-Kadri-Kessel, JVR-Santorelli-Komarov/Winnik. Want to see Lupul-Kadri-Kessel again to get a better feel for them on the whole, but could be two pretty reasonable two-way lines right there.

3 days, 3 hours ago on Leafs Notebook – December 15th

Reply

@Ratzshite Well, when it matters Kadri is going up against top lines while Bozak is going up secondary lines and still getting killed on the overall run of play, so why does it matter at this point? Put him in for the odd DZ faceoff at the end of a game worst case scneario, big deal.

@wendelsfist That diversity helps you get through the season, but at the end of the day you're winning/losing with your best players. Going to have to happen eventually. Have to get Lupul rolling on a secondary line.

@Jon5200 Looked promising together. Domino effect of that is you probably have to create a whole new shutdown line to get the primary match-ups... Reunite Komarov+Santorelli when they are healthy.

@Burtonboy Not sure how people watch that line and don't cringe. Great on the PP and keep them together on the PP, sure. But 5v5? It's starting to get reallyyy ugly. Especially when you compare them to what Winnik-Kadri-Santorelli are doing.

3 days, 3 hours ago on Leafs Notebook – December 15th

Reply

@BoneChompski @Anthony Petrielli @Radar O'Rielly It's more about getting ready for crunch time down the stretch vs. keeping things rolling while they can. They should be in the mix with at least 25 games left pretty well no matter what, but the hockey gets really tough at that point. Have to start preparing for that now vs. what happened last year.
