@Mcost61 @Burtonboy Would get rid of that contract in a heart beat still no questions asked.

@ProfessorRance @Anthony Petrielli @Burtonboy No... Franson is a pending UFA while Perron has another year left on a good deal.

@Burtonboy @Anthony Petrielli Oh yeah, Dec and I drool about him all the time. So hard to get the puck off of him. Put that guy on a line with Naz and Lupul, drop Winnik down the line-up, to start trending better.

@Burtonboy @Anthony Petrielli Five games in and the team hasn't won a game? It's probably because he's actually hard on pucks and EDM doesn't know what that looks like so they got confused and sat him.

@Burtonboy Wow.. Didn't realize he was playing that little. What a waste.

@Great Dane @ingy56 @gottabe_KD @Yaknowwhat I'd say they dump the puck in a lot less. Have gotten rid of wingers at the far blue line deflecting pucks in deep.

@mickster To an extent... Have to play to each individual's strength but also demand more from them in their performance and positioning (to your point). You don't get a lot of teaching time in the NHL because of the tight schedule and travel.

@Jay_Berg Still early. Would be more optimistic if the Leafs didn't retain salary and give STL a pick. Let's see how Gunnarsson does when he returns to their line-up.

@Cloud09 I wont indicate who an exit is occurring against on a regular basis but if I notice someone is doing well against a good player/line I'll note it. Will probably look at other sources for that information and collaborate it vs. recording it myself.

@TML__fan @Anthony Petrielli It is very difficult to automate in hockey, although I'm sure it will be figured out. Unique exits/entries/whatever in every hockey game.

@TML__fan My guess is most of these "analytics" bloggers hired are bean-counters on the teams that hired them, save for Dellow and Tulsky, and Mehta.

@quinnesq @Anthony Petrielli Good point on the soft chip ins. I alluded to it but didn't flat out say it-- he rips the puck in hard and his teammates don't have a chance to retrieve those.

As you implied, feels like sometimes he just takes his foot off the because he's pedal scared of getting caught. We've seen his toe drag on occasion, but never really driving the net hard, which he should be able to do with his hands, skating, low center of gravity and skill.

@Burtonboy @Anthony Petrielli @Yan28 Their head coach is on the Leafs bench now too. Did Ashton do something off-ice that we are unaware of????

12 hours, 2 minutes ago on Leafs Notebook – October 20

Reply

@Yan28 @Anthony Petrielli Yeah he's had a rough start, but pouring over the game tape you see that he's playing with wingers that can't get the puck out or do much of anything (Kozun was decent on the forecheck that's about it at 5v5). Holland needs to be better, but they have to try giving him a shot in the arm too. He's had some occasional nice shifts with players higher in the line-up.

12 hours, 6 minutes ago on Leafs Notebook – October 20

@quinnesq He skates himself into dead ends on the rush and bails out on the play. Against poor neutral zone teams it's easy for forwards to skate up with him and get open, but against a team like Detroit that locks it down he really struggles to initiate offense off clean entries (like the majority of this team, though).

@quinnesq Polak makes the occasional clumsy mistake that draws the ire of the fan-base (like when he blew a tire Friday night leading to a goal against) but on the whole he's been more effective than most are willing to give him credit for.

Thanks for the nice comment.

@Yan28 I'm a pretty big Carrick fan, but you can't give up on Holland this early (look what happened with Colborne, and it took him half the season to get going last year and now he looks awesome). I'd try Ashton-Holland-Frattin and if it's still bad and Booth isn't back then I'd start thinking about Carrick as at least a winger.

@Cloud09 @Bruffins Rielly has been fine in that department... Gardiner not so much. One of the reasons I said I'd pair him with Polak.

@TheLoovTrain Yeah that looks reasonable. I would not hesitate to put Santorelli up to L2 RW and play Komarov at C on L3 though.

@dlb Mad Thanks. Some of the data collection is more difficult than I gave it credit for when I first started. I'll pause the game and take some time to really think through what happened in order to properly track the events at play-- it's not as black and white as people think.

12 hours, 42 minutes ago on Leafs Notebook – October 20

Reply

@MaxwellHowe Yes. Polak's strength lies in the neutral zone and puck retrieval, not outlet passes and breaking out of the zone (although he is good at stopping cycles, as mentioned). So I'd flip his usage. If they are going to talk the talk about using data to refine the line-up, I think this is a prime example of how to do it. It is completely counter-intuitive.

I don't know if Percy is healthy and ready to go in so I'd start there first for Tuesday.

@Burtonboy The top line has been a bit stale despite their counting stats. They've combined for 7 goals... But 4 have been via special teams, plus Kessel's OT winner. I mean, according to Evan's data, Kessel is under 40% in scoring opportunities for.

@Burtonboy @Cameron19 @Mitch92 @WendelGilmour Arguably they got hot in the playoffs twice to support their possession game... They had some real struggles both of their championship seasons, made a big deadline trade each time, and heated up in the playoffs.

@Jay31 @Anthony Petrielli @Cloud09 I think it's really hard to move Dion's contract in the middle of the season unless a team gets really desperate/has a ton of cap room (EDM).

I think Bozak could be moved in-season pretty easily, but not sure they'd get much of a return. Would still do it though.

@djamon @Anthony Petrielli I'd keep Phil. Teams search decades to get an elite scorer, he's still young enough, and his contract is reasonable.
