Nice piece Nikhil.
One thing that I think gets ignored in all these pieces is the Leafs simply are extremely weak down the middle. Doesn't matter what your system is when your top 3 C's are Bozak-Kadri-McClement for the majority of the year. Trevor Smith was a top 9 C for awhile, JVR played a bit of C, Holland was acquired and thrown onto the top line. They shouldn't have been dominated possession wise as bad as they were, but even with good systems, coaching, whatever you want to call it, they're still going to get outplayed by and large with this group of C's.
**Note: I'm well aware the Leafs brought some of this on themselves by buying out Grabovski.

@Jmessih @Anthony Petrielli @Burtonboy Yeah was just naming Marlies D, not future NHLers. Wouldn't completely discount Knodel either, but at 24 time isn't on his side.
2 days, 8 hours ago on Rookie Tournament Game #2 – Maple Leafs vs. Senators
@Jmessih @Burtonboy Also have Knodel, Marshall and Granberg.
@Burtonboy @Anthony Petrielli @T K O Yep was talking to Morrison about this the other day. Real shame we can't see these kids this weekend.
2 days, 16 hours ago on Rookie Tournament Game #1: Maple Leafs vs. Blackhawks
@T K O He plays college hockey and they have already begun so he's with his team.
@Cameron19 @Anthony Petrielli Raymond isn't falsely there. He was by and large the L2 winger throughout the season so not sure what you're talking about there?
Also not sure who you are considering Chicago's L2 to get that total...

@phaneufoundlander I think it's fair to say it would be a surprise if they didn't have top 10 goaltending.
@Cameron19 Cam, Dec is working on a post about this but the leafs had one of the highest scoring L1's and L2's in the league. Too bad he's a slow, lazy worker (hope he sees this).
@Cameron19 @Anthony Petrielli If they each get ~30 points I would say that's pretty significant.
@Cameron19 @Anthony Petrielli Yeah he put himself in a good spot to run with it either way. I just don't think he's putting his hands up and saying "let's just see what we have." Before they signed Winnik and Booth they could have ran:
That would have been justifiable. I think they saw some good players still available and got it done because it will make them better and maybe even push them to the playoffs. At the very least to the playoff bubble.
@Cameron19 We've beat this drum before. I know I have. I agree with it. But he could have tore down this roster this summer and not one core player moved... So, he's not giving up on the season at hand even a little bit by virtue of his actions.
@Cameron19 @Anthony Petrielli @67sound @mlse That's a good and fair point on Dion. One I didn't really consider. Do think Rielly and Gardiner each take a step this year though. Would be really curious to see what those guys do playing heavy minutes should Dion actually miss time (which I hope doesn't happen).
@Cameron19 @67sound @mlse Reimer can't carry the team to the playoffs if Bernier gets hurt? Not sure losing Dion cripples them either. Kessell... Well, yeah.
@wiski The entire summer? :)
@Cameron19 @Anthony Petrielli @Burtonboy I hope he makes it. Been told he's fighting an uphill battle though.
@Burtonboy Just put that because they signed him to a two-way deal.
@Cameron19 Also by that token it's assuming that scoring is the be all and end all. As noted, would bet this Bergeron is better than the 20 year old one. Would take NJ Kovalchuk vs. ATL Kovalchuk, etc. etc.
@cryptotho @Anthony Petrielli Nonis said Frattin was a PKer and could move up and down their line-up. They simply think D'Amigo is strictly a L4er whereas they believe Frattin can move up and down. That doesn't mean Frattin is going to step right into L2... Especially when they really want Clarkson to get that spot and earn his money.

@mike_84 @Anthony Petrielli @Knights2Leafs Appeared his game did improve last year in the AHL, even if it hasn't translated to the NHL yet.
@Knights2Leafs @Anthony Petrielli Now Ashton has Spott on the bench at least... Am told it is really going to help Holland too.
@Knights2Leafs @Anthony Petrielli Really like Bodie... But it's tough to justify keeping a journeyman over a 6'3, 23 year old kid that's shown some ability to score albeit in lower levels.
@mike_84 @Anthony Petrielli @cryptotho Countering myself here too, but chances are there will be injuries in preseason or Clarkson will hop off the bench and get suspended for 10 games, so it's nice to have some legitimate depth. Hope the Leafs don't 'Colborne' Ashton though.
@cryptotho If Kontiola is legit, is Frattin even going to make the starting 12?
@rustynail Welcome back

@mike_84 @Anthony Petrielli @Knights2Leafs KK we'll probably include it.
@mike_84 @Anthony Petrielli @Knights2Leafs Probably both. I guess you liked the live tweeting?
@mike_84 @Anthony Petrielli @Knights2Leafs We do have guys at the rookie camp. That's confirmed with passes. Not sure about training camp/preseason yet.
@mike_84 @Anthony Petrielli @Knights2Leafs Unfortunately it's not official as of right now, so not yet.
@Knights2Leafs @Anthony Petrielli
There wasn't a person in the hockey world who didn't think they were basically in the playoffs after they beat LA to take 2/3 on the west coast. That's the truth.
@Knights2Leafs @Anthony Petrielli We're working on a few things to hopefully take it up another level this coming season. Think the team is improved too so it could be a really fun year.
@Knights2Leafs Nice to see you K2L
@mike_84 Said way way below but we're working on it. Making a few tweaks to the overall site.
@Bon Scott was a Leaf fan @Anthony Petrielli @Loric76
I honestly don't know. Looks like he's making his own bed regardless though.
@mike_84 @Anthony Petrielli Hahah. Fair. It's sourced from the Ottawa Sun which is even worse. But logically if you look at NJ's roster, they are probably trying to move a guy like Brunner.
@Hifi75 @Anthony Petrielli Doesn't say. Just notes he's available and Ottawa might be a logical fit.
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=62151 Brunner potentially to Ottawa?
@Hmmm @Anthony Petrielli @Reether @Cameron19 Yeah at this point my eyes are able to pick out what's quality and what's nonsense without even reading, but for new people or people looking to join in??? Hopefully we can find a happy medium here.
@Reether @Anthony Petrielli @Cameron19 There was a stretch where guys were posting a lot of pictures of girls in bikinis and what not here, and we got some emails from girls/women saying no chance they'd go to the comments section now.
That's just one example.
@peterbleafs @Anthony Petrielli @Cameron19 Thanks.
I'm not saying we've been perfect or have always done the right thing, but I think we always have the sites best interest in mind with the things we do do. Up to us to find the right formula though.
@JMAC17 @Reether @Anthony Petrielli @Cameron19
Example: Wrote a PK piece a few weeks ago and a guy started posting his videos of Reimer and Bernier saying they both got hit a lot last year... I mean... Dude.
@Reether @Anthony Petrielli @Cameron19
Hmmm kk. Maybe we'll play with how we name it or position it on the homepage. Don't want to say I have the answer right now, but we'll throw around ideas and see what we come up with.
And honestly, we've had a lot of new commenters on the analysis articles with 30, 40, 50, 60 comments. I agree that a lot of people can't/wont be bothered, but we've already seen some of it paying off and we've gotten feedback in private from people saying they've scrolled to the comments section a few times and seen what's said there, and now will never even look at them because of stuff said. Won't speak for Alec and Dec, although I assume it's the same for them, but I get emails pretty regularly from readers that are not commenters here.
@Hmmm @Anthony Petrielli @Cameron19
Appreciate the feedback. We're hoping once rookie camp hits a steady stream of hockey content will begin and that will make it easy to have a post up everyday and that will benefit everyone.
@BigTO @Anthony Petrielli @Cameron19
Agreed. I want the comments section to be lively and strong. Personally prefer to come onto the comments section and see hockey being discussed. It's September now, we should all be gearing up for the season. I'm not here everyday, but just haven't really seen it unfortunately. I know it will come, but I think driving high quality hockey conversations is what a lot of people want to see and be apart of in the comments section.
I'll also note, and I say this not wanting to offend anyone, but the comments section represents a very small portion of viewers. We're talking less than 10%. Maybe even 5% to be honest. So how do we get more people involved in talking hockey here? Have to clean it up around the edges I think. (NOTE- that does not necessarily mean simply banning a few people).
@wiski @Cameron19 Saw your comment way below- just wanted to say I didn't like people calling you a racist and we tried to distinguish the difference between it being an inappropriate comment vs. a personal attack on your beliefs and what not.
@Cameron19 This is why we switched around how the comment section works. The analysis pieces here take a lot of time to have people go on them and write what they're having for dinner. But we want the community feel too so it's fine doing that on the mash-up.
The other thing is, and a lot of regulars don't realize this, but the group intimidates new people. The new system has generated a lot of new commenters because there aren't 1000 comments on an analysis piece so they feel better about doing it. Additionally, we've had writers who have stopped writing here/didn't want to because they got lit up in the comments section hard. 18, 19 year old kids that just got ran off the site. Has happened numerous times.
@Mattmark @Anthony Petrielli Not quite... I think they are bargains as long as they hit their career averages and have regular, standard, seasons to their abilities, basically.
1 week, 6 days ago on Breaking Down the Maple Leafs ‘Moneypuck’ Additions
@Mattmark I think the three forwards they acquired for a combined $3.9M are going to offer $7-10M worth of contributions, which is a pretty big deal in the cap world.
@Yaknowwhat We've been burned by the older European signings before... Don't want to box these guys into the same category but just approaching Kontiola with no expectations yet an open mind.
@Claymish Wasn't a fan of Rielly-Franson last year but I'm willing to give them another look. They didn't seem comfortable together to my eye.
@Burtonboy Would like to see them be really creative with line combinations and try a lot of different things. IE- Breaking up the top line, breaking up Naz and Lupul. There's a lot of moving parts, let's see who works with what.
