Let me know when Randy's fired
Thanks for those comments and I agree. Worse for me is I had to stop reading the game comments last night. There was more shit talk about Phaneuf when he wasn't playing than when he does play.

He didn't manipulate the board to get Marner - he was taken 19th overall in the OHL draft. 18 other teams had a shot at him.

That's just sour grapes. It's understandable for those kids to choose the college route rather than play in most OHL locations. When given the chance to play in London under the Hunter's successful systems, it's easier for them to change their minds. Some go to college and realize they will get limited icetime as a freshman or sophomore. If they think they're good enough, they might be able to speed up their route to the NHL by switching to the OHL - see John Carlson of Washington.
what "unscrupulous" methods? No doubt they are a preferred destination for a lot of US kids that don't want to play in North Bay or Sudbury but beyond that I don't know what you're talking about.
A rebuild is no guarantee that what we have in 5 or 7 years is any better than what we have now. Yes, Rielly would be part of that group, but he's part of this group.
While this team has many issues and weaknesses, it seems to me that it has at least 50% of decent pieces in place to retool. What are the guarantees you're going to get another player of the quality of Kessel? Or even Phaneuf for that matter? I'm not against trading one or both but I would not be trading them just for the sake of hitting the reset button. I've always like Lupul and before his injuries this season he was one of the hardest working Leafs. That being said, I can see him going.
I think I'm agreeing with you that with selective trading and playing the right game this team can be competitive soon and if all the other things fall in place maybe even contenders within 2 or 3 years. I also doubt they're going full re-build and if they do I'll remain a Leafs fan and watch them, but will continue to distance myself from them emotionally.
I was kind of shocked that Jones dropped so far down but even 2 years in I'd take my chances with McKinnon.

Market value is $5M+ for a career < .5ppg player? I don't think so and that's what I argued at the time. It's not like his production dropped off the map when he got to the Leafs, it was his history.
And I can't help it if Nonis succumbed to the pressure to sign a stupid deal (then and now) to avoid getting roasted.
Mac was another casualty of Carlyle.
I call bullshit on just about everyone being fine with Bolland and Clarkson. Bolland was pretty iffy at best and there was a HUGE number of posters who hated the idea of giving Clarkson that type of deal. They may have liked the idea of Clarkson the player but no f...n way at that price.
@sniperstar @Sebastian James
Time is on our side. Still 2+ years before we hit 50 years without a Cup.

For anyone wanting to see some Marner, the Knights are playing Oshawa right now on Rogers 510.

Burtch actually had a good article on O'Reilly which made me a little more positive about him - just not at $7M+.

No chance Marner or Strome play in the NHL next year. Marner needs at least one more year to develop his mad skills and get a little bigger and although Strome is fairly tall he's not strong enough or fast enough (yet) to compete with NHL players.
My feelings exactly on Shanahan. It's far too early but he has to share some part of the blame for bringing Carlyle back when it was clear that it was a recipe for another disaster of a season. What we don't know is if Nonis was a large part of the push to bring RC back.

Someone said they were sold out. Are they still taking subscriptions? I had it during the last lockout.
On one of the other threads was a post about Domi's short handed goal last night. I was at the game and it was simply amazing. This is a retool year for the Knights and they aren't likely to do much but they have Domi playing on a line with Mitch Marner and Christian Dvorak and it is a blast to watch them control the puck. All of them averaging around 2 points per game.
Marner is an amazing player and the only thing holding him back is his size.
Not necessarily a big fan of Burtch or O'Rielly. I just have this bad feeling that we will never be able to sign him at a reasonable contract price. Having said that, Burtch laid out a good case for.
I'd really consider doing it but I'd like to have him signed to a long term deal first. I know that's really unlikely.
@Top Jimmy Well I guess you're expectations weren't reasonable.

@dlb, just dlb @Knights2Leafs ??????
So much for giving Horachek 20 games to let his systems sink in especially after he takes over a demoralized team in the toughest part of their schedule. But whatever, if it suits your narrative.
especially because we have Nylander who might be Drouin's equal. Or better if we're lucky.
1 week, 4 days ago on Game 46 Scoring Chances: Blues 3 vs. Maple Leafs 0
looked like the Leafs trying to defend a lead late in the 3rd.
You could see it when they intercepted that last time that they thought they could just run out the clock.
It'll cost you!
I do think that like Clarkson, Tavares wants to do his thang in TO.
The good news is that unlike Clarkson he's got a real thang to bring.
Starting the 2016/17 season we'll be have Tavares, Nylander, Kadri and Gauthier. Maybe even Bozak will still be around.
@Luke_R @Archie Vanlanda
If you're talking Marner, he has played some centre this year but more on the wing with Dvorak as his centre. He's even listed on the Knights website as a RW.
Marner is incredibly talented but even if he's a centre, bear in mind he's smaller than Connor Brown. Ya, he might grow but he'll never the big 1C we're looking for.
Solid stick check attempt by Bozie on that playl

@Cameron19 @Mattmark @Mitch92 @Leaf20000
Without a doubt Dion and Phil are the 2 most highly criticized players on the team which is also reflective of their salaries. Phil is still by far the most talented and Dion is probably our best overall player notwithstanding his imperfections. Phaneuf gets 100 times more criticism than he deserves and there are posters just waiting to point out any mistake.
I tend to keep the negative comments to a minimum because you have to like the players on the team you are supporting. Hypocrite that I am, I just can't help myself when it comes to Clarkson because the criticism is warranted and even then I like and respect the guy. But Phaneuf and Clarkson are in 2 completely different categories of player. One is at top 2 dman who may or may not be overpaid but isn't that far off if he is, and the other is a bottom 6 player at best being paid as a 2RW.
Keep defending Dion Cam.

The only good thing about bringing back Carlyle is it made me take stock of my emotional investment in the team. I never got too high when they were winning and it's not really bothering me now as they are losing. But it was a wasted year from the start and Shanahan will always own that. The hardest part is trying to properly evaluate this core with another turmoil of a season.
Just wanted to give a shout out to Burtonboy. I read your comments from yesterday and wanted to express what an important part of this board you are. I share your frustration but really hope to keep enjoying this site regardless of how low this organization sinks.
This has been a long year for me. i've had several friends and close business asscociates pass away. Yesterday afternoon i was at a memorial service for a long time business associate. That's just a part of life and helps give some perspective on the perceived "problems" of the Maple Leafs.
I don't mean to sound maudlin because after that memorial service i had the great pleasure of having dinner with my wife, my son, my daughter and my 3 granddaughters to celebrate my granddaughter's birthday and my birthday. Yesterday I turned 60 and my youngest granddaughter turned 1. The worst of times followed by the best of times.
As for the Leafs, it sure seems like we're seeing the worst of times (the mid 80's notwithstanding) and hopefullly we're on our way to the best of times. We might not have the best prospects in the NHL but I'm thrilled that we've got players like Nylander and Brown to look forward to.
GO LEAFS GO!
Agreed, but there sure seems to be a whole lot of posts over the last few days to trade everyone but 5 or 6 key pieces. Like Burke or not, he started a rebuild that has made this team a whole lot closer to being a good team than it was the day before he was hired. I'm concerned that Nonis has allowed that to stagnate at best. I have huge resect for Mark Hunter but I don't think I should assume he can do at the NHL level what he accomplished at the junior level. Having said that, at least he has some managerial skills.
Maybe the players have good cause to lack any faith in their management leaders. Why should Phil and Dion take all the heat because the management team couldn't ice a better roster?
To go from our roster to a an LA type of group of forwards is next to impossible unless it's a 10 year plan. But look at Chicago's roster. They have Bickell at 6'4" and Toews at 6'2", no other forward over 6'1" and 5 under 6'.
Of course, one of their 2 bigger forwards happens to be Toews.
The point is we're at least within the realm of possibitlity of building a Hawks type roster than a Kings type roster.
Whichever way we go will determine the degree to which I remain committed to the Leafs. Many thought the hiring of Shanahan was brilliant. For me it was strike one. Exactly zero experience. Keeping Carlyle was strike two.
Maybe I'm in the significant minority but I don't mind watching them play this type of hockey and losing if it means they will be better in the long run. Of course that means some changes but not wholesale changes.
and I forgot Clarkson. Do we really trust Nonis and his crew to get the right players?
so more of the Biggs and Gauthiers?
I've seen Domi through his entire Knights career and while he is a very good player he might max (pun intended) out at a Brendan Gallagher type player. Would you trade Kessel for Gallagher?

could argue that it almost makes it worse - admission it was worthy of discipline but with an insufficient penalty.
2 weeks ago on Game Review: Game #44, Anaheim Ducks 4 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs 0
Wow - have the rules ever changed since Shanahan left. Just opening the doors to more lawsuits for not stopping that bullshit.
It's bizarre that MLSE would hire someone with zero management experience to takeover the biggest brand in the NHL especially after the 3rd collapse in 3 years. Shanahan may end up being a brilliant executive and turn this franchise around but the minute RC was extended it was clear that this would be a wasted year with the core in their prime while Shanny got some on the job training.
@MaxwellHowe @Knights2Leafs @Wilbur
I'd rather see them make the playoffs than not but by the time the coaching change happened it was a long shot so I'm prepared (again) to see them miss but I can live with that if they stick with the plan. I can watch when they're not being constantly hemmed in and bombarded with shots.
@Wilbur @MaxwellHowe @Yaknowwhat @Mind Bomb
Not to mention that the Leafs may have the worst schedule in the league. After having had games in hand they played 12 games in 21 nights before a 5 day Christmas break and then come back with 13 games in 24 nights.
Any wonder our players keep dropping like flies.
So Shanahan's inexperience and inability to pull the trigger way sooner will be a good thing then.
Not to mention we're running with Smith and Carrick as our bottom 2 centres.
Deja vu? Once again we have Trevor Smith and Troy Bodie trying to carry us through.

For the rest of this year - yes.
did you miss the 2 on 1 he had with Kadri?
Our Corsi is much better, but we continue to have a negative Refsi.
