Just today I did a workshop for authors on how they can use social media. Instead of focusing on platforms and tools, I focused on being clear about what they wanted to accomplish: more credibility, to build a community for readers, research, connect to peers, create more awareness. My goal was to get them thinking about using the tools the best way that worked for them. Surprisingly it was a tough sell. I could have given them the standard this is how you use...but frankly you can google that and find answers by the dozen. What is harder to come by is the critical thinking and evaluation process that helps people determine what's going to get them the results they need and want.
I'm in! Thanks to @kirstenasimmons for recommending your project!
Great list! I'd like to mention #SmallBizChat - hosted by smallbizlady every Wednesday @ 8PM EST. Lots of great small business experts, coaches, and consultants...and the group is super generous with sharing ideas, resources, encouragement and answers. Hope you can stop by!
I think its all in how you use the tools - and that's with anything online. You can manipulate your profiles, you can manipulate your posts, your videos, your audios ...if you are a person that will manipulate things to give a false appearance - the problem isn't with the tools it is with your character. I meet people who say I have 3,000 followers so I know I am doing great with Twitter - then we look at the tools that help track and measure and they start to see that they don't have any real conversations with people, they only share their links, their tweets aren't related to the niches they want to be visible in - with that information we can focus better, taking their 25 random tweets to 10 meaningful moments online.
Fantastic - practical and profitable. Twitter is great for data mining and opportunity mining if you are willing to find the right tool, the right people and create conversation.
I love that this is real practical down to earth advice. It reminds me that "luck" is a combination of readiness, timing, knowing what you want. Thanks for sharing.
