The white patterns cutting in from the inside of the pads is a deliberate illusion to appear the 5-hole is more open. Roy first did this with his Koho pads in 95-96. 
The idea is get the shooter to got fire there, and take it away first.

I'm not certain Clowe is the solution for facing the Bruins. The more you engage them physically and emotionally, the better they are.

If the Rangers instead ignore the after the whistle BS, and just play right between the whistles, the Bruins won't be able to feed off the physical/emotional stuff that lit their fire in game 7 against Toronto.

Lucic is a prime example of this, if he's not emotionally engaged, he's Boston's Boyle, a lot of useless size. It's similar to Al Iafrate, where if you ignored him, he was invisible in a game.
