Good piece. I think the biggest misconception about chasing undrafted free agents is that their priority is to play on a team that has a chance to win. Yes, this weighs in their decision, but it's a very distant #2 behind the promise of being able to play NHL games. For these guys their biggest concern, by far, is to be given an opportunity to show they can play in the NHL. They know a lot of organizations just want to sign them for depth, but will still always give their own draft picks and proven NHLers a much longer look. The only reason Ottawa was able to sign Winch, BB and Da Costa was because they promised them games. A lot of organizations are not willing to do that. Ottawa giving Winch such a long look despite him clearly not being an NHL player (yes, I know I will get argument on this), is why they were able to land BB and SDC.
So if Ottawa lands one of the guys you mentioned here it will be because of their track record with undrafted guys and because they clearly have a lack of depth on D. That's why they were very close to landing Schultz as well.

@Nichols6thSens hahahaha. That first sentence is hilarous. One of the funniest things you've ever written on this site.

Schultz is not coming to Ottawa.
Anyone else find it telling when Alfie refers to the Worlds as the "end of his career" and also says he's going to Sweden for 8 weeks starting this Sunday?

@Nichols6thSens I don't understand what you're saying? Turris is not an example of a rumour coming to fruition?
2 years, 1 month ago on Ottawa Linked to Rick Nash Rumours Once Again | June
"Personally, I can't recall the last time that Ottawa was linked to a rumour and had it come to fruition"
One that comes to mind is Kyle Turris, who was linked repeatedly to Ottawa on this website for several months last year.
@Nichols6thSens @havey03 Or Matt Gilroy's.
2 years, 1 month ago on Assistant GM Tim Murray Speaks on a Variety of Topics | June
@havey03 @Nichols6thSens @MelnyksHangovers Assuming you meant UFA. I'd say the top group would be Wideman, Stuart, Jackman, Suter, Carle, Garrison, and Rozival. And the secondary group would be Sarich, Allen, Jurcina.
Regardless of if you think we have a realistic chance of getting any of those, or if you think certain guys will get more than they're worth, that's still a pretty decent list compared to other years I'd say.
And let's not forget Jeff Finger's 4 year deal comes to an end on July 1 as well.
"Usually it's the lesser calibre guys who sign well after the deadline and are scrambling for jobs"
What deadline are you talking about?
I'm not sure I agree that it's a weak free agent class for D. There are 6 or 7 legitimate good options who are still at a reasonable age. I would say that's probably more than usual in the post-lockout era.
I do agree that it would be preferable to use the organization's assets to acquire a younger top-4 D option via trade than to sign a band-aid solution.
@Nichols6thSens By the way, my previous comment was sarcastic. Butler was a complete waste of a roster spot last season. He's going to have to improve significantly if he wants to stay in the NHL. I don't care what his corsi is. Anyone who watches the games knows he's the softest player on the team and has terrible hockey sense.

"Butler’s relative Corsi rating wasn’t that bad."
Somebody should have told Paul this before games 5, 6, and 7. I don't think he realized how good Butler was when scratching him and dressing two different guys making their NHL debuts.
@Mothballsuitor Yes. It's definitely that, or this:

@Nichols6thSens @rway019 Team 1200 also took your idea and used it as a talking point multiple times this morning. Amazing how 3 weeks of good playoff games can erase 2 full regular seasons of embarrassing play.
@luckyevans Why? Different coach, different manager now.
I wouldn't worry too much. He will do everything he can to stay in Southern California. If the Kings or Ducks offer him even a smaller, one-year deal he will take it before looking at anything in the East.
@steffeG Don't worry, The Artist Club is in Moscow.

Ottawa is already one of the highest scoring teams in the league. Unless 93 or 100 can play in the bottom D pairing, on the PK, or as a goalie, I'm not sure why we're even talking about this.
Damnit. I thought this was going to be a post about me.

I'm glad you didn't hear Hitch on Prime Time Sports last night. You would have been in a car driving to St Louis to pull off a hit (this would not be the first hockey related occurrence of this in that city).
Between that fat ass and Cox speaking in his woman's voice, the Norris discussion was at an all-time high level of ignorance and stupidity.
Luckily for your mental health it doesn't look like they posted it on their website.

If you ever get bored of blogging about the Sens you should definitely get a job as somebody's campaign manager for an election.
@slavitch @Nichols6thSens Let's make this happen.
2 years, 4 months ago on Poorly Formed Thoughts: Girardi over Karlsson for the Norris | March
@Nichols6thSens Can you try to get Jeffery Simpson on a podcast? Maybe ask him who he thinks should win the Norris?
(I'm not joking)
Let's not forget to consider another strong candidate. October is part of the season too you guys.
"Personally, I think by a country mile he's the best defenceman in the league," Wilson said of Phaneuf. "It's not even close right now. His numbers show that - his plus-minus, we chart scoring chances and his numbers are off the chart there. I think he's comfortable in his own skin, he's comfortable being the captain and he's healthy."
"Never one to avoid rife controversy so long as it positively affects the number of pageviews that his column or blog gets, Cox revels in his pot-stirring role and the attention it creates"
You could have just stopped after that sentence. Cox is a complete joke. Acknowledging these ridiculous thoughts that even he doesn't believe is just pointless. You may as well start blogging about how Bob McCown is dating Cox's daughter, or how Kessel is the highest scoring winger to suffer from Down Syndrome in league history. It would be the equivalent of the horseshit that Cox puts out.

Somebody needs to photoshop Erik's face onto a chicken wing so Hitch respects him more.
Hopefully Ken doesn't have to leave his team due to being too fat in the middle of the playoffs like Quinn did in 2002.
Good stuff guys. Thanks. Nice use of the Zoolander music.
Is it "Leh-ner" or "Lay-ner" ? I thought it rhymed with Penner according to Dean...?

@Nichols6thSens Should I go blow myself up if I don't agree?
@Nichols6thSens Interesting. Why does it have to be only one of coming to Ottawa or go to the Worlds? Could he not come and play a few games and practice with the team then go to the Worlds after they get swept by Boston or New York?
I think it would be a mistake to burn a year of Silfverberg’s contract. I also think it would be a mistake to throw him into games at this time of year. I also think if Ottawa doesn't win tomorrow night things are going to get very interesting around here. Sens could be in a tie for 8th (and only ahead of Buffalo by ROW) by the time they fly to Winnipeg.
@Nichols6thSens True. I hope you're right. I don't see much risk in signing him for one year, seeing how he and the other forwards play, and either trading him or letting him walk after next season.
2 years, 4 months ago on Bryan the Builder: Expectations vs The Plan | March
@Nichols6thSens I really hope they do because I like his game a lot, but from what I've heard he's not in the plans.
The problem is they would have to qualify him at $1.1m, which is a lot for a guy who may or may not get back to what he was. The other thing is that they have Zibby and Silfverberg coming next year, and Stone, Noesen, etc coming the year or two after that, so there isn't much room for a guy whose game is primarily offensive.
If it was up to me I'd give him one more shot, but I wouldn't bet on that happening.
Thinking back to September - who would have thought they'd be in a playoff spot while having zero contribution from Filatov, Da Costa, Regin, and Rundblad.
We're going all the way!!!
Great post. Being able to mention Konopka's sister is strong. From what you are describing, and what I've heard other people say, his style of play sounds similar to Alfie's. I'm not saying he will ever be that level of player, but would you agree that he's a similar style winger?

2 years, 4 months ago on Silfverberg Proud Of His 'Score Harvest' | March
The fact that Chara played in Ottawa is not relevant to whether or not they sign Sustr. However, Ottawa's track record of giving college free agents a long look and a chance to make some NHL money and ignoring the fact that they are not NHL players (Winchester, Butler, Da Costa) will help their chances of getting guys like this for sure.
However, in this case, the price is getting driven way too high like it did with Gilroy a few years ago.
2 years, 4 months ago on Senators Pursuing Andrej the Giant? | March
@silversevensens @Nichols6thSens I think it would be better for the team if Erik has to wait a couple more years before he's crowned as the best D in the league.
2 years, 4 months ago on FJMing Some Erik Karlsson Norris Noise | March
@Nichols6thSens Isn't that exactly what I just said?
@Nichols6thSens The best thing that can happen is him not winning. It will keep his price a little bit down, and keep him motivated going forward. NHL awards are a very funny thing because they go a long long way in establishing a player's reputation and value, yet the process to decide who wins them is completely bush league and not logical.
He won't win. And Sens fans should be happy about this. It's better if he still has something to work towards in the next few years.
You can break down the numbers and the logic any way you want. The bottom line is that 90% of the people who vote on this don't watch Ottawa play more than a few times a year. Even when they do watch, most of them don't know hockey well enough to understand a player's value to his team. That's why awards should be voted on my GMs and coaches, not bloggers and writers who have never put a pair of skates on.
