Two things -- 1) thought the up-tempo pace of this game was good for rangers....maybe this is AV's "system" and 2) just once I'd like to see AV lose his mind when a ref screws his team...calm can be good, but so is showing some life behind the bench

One more thing...McD is just a beast. Not many D-men catch Kessel from behind like that. He is a top 6 d-man in league right now. If Cally is not re-signed, meet your new Captain ladies and gentlemen...

Don't understand sending him down. He's a 2010 first-round pick. Time to find out what he can do -- and lord knows we need someone who can drop mitts and is over 5'7".

"Island of Misfit Toys" is perefect analogy.  I'm not quite ready to agree fully on your characterization of Nash, but it is trending that way.

I was one of the many calling for Torts' job last season.  While I still think his time was up (that coaching style only lasts so long), I now think he deserved more credit than I was willing to give him for squeezing as many wins as he did out of this collection of misfit players.

This move is a joke. What's Asham going to do -- go out and get his ass kicked? That's been the result of most of his fights. And he does little else.

If this is the best move Sather & Co. have to make, get ready for an abysmal rest of season.

That is all.

I really want to know what happened to the Cally we all love. Someone else has inhabited his jersey this year and is almost completely invisible. He used to be that energy/sandpaper guy -- who would also add some offense. Where did he go?

Agree completely.  Love these guys and what they have done for this franchise, but locking them into long-term deals could be crippling.

While Lunqvist has not been himself, I can see how some goals will sneak by.  But I am baffled by Callahan's invisibility.  He has always been an energy player.  I was at the game last night, and have watched on TV or in person almost every game this year, and he is just not a factor -- or at least not the noticeable factor he has been up until this year.

Agree. This team has too many problems to fix with a trade or two. Puck-moving defensemen, scorers and guys like Ott and Chris Neil (who play with snarl and offense) are hard to find. We need all of that. Won't happen easily or quickly. This is a .500 team. Get used to it.

Was anyone else at the Garden and unimpressed with its "transformation"?  I was in the 200 section and the corridor outside betweeb periods was absurdly packed with people -- way too narrow and, God forbid, a fire hazard if people needed to get out quickly.

The scoreboard didn't work correctly (I know it will be fixed).  The Chase Bridge was not that noticeable.  Overall, disappointed compared to all the publicity.

Apart from the physical structure, the crowd was d-e-a-d.  Maybe that's to be expected with a losing start, but it was crazy quiet -- especially for an opening night and a tight game.  I was at last season's opener against the Penguins, and (until the Rangers let up quick goals), the crowd was way more into it.  If this team doesn't turn it around soon, the Garden is going to continue to be a morgue.

If Rangers continue to only give him a couple goals a game next season on offense, I think it is a sure bet that Hank walks -- and I would not blame him.

As for Staal, I wish him luck in that recovery.  There have been serious facial injuries this year, it seems, than in the past and to higher profile players (Sid, Staal).  I'm not saying it will happen soon, but I do think we will see a player use  a full cage/shield in the not-too-distant future.

Lack of defensive talent and depth glaringly apparent this series. Lack of offense has been apparent for at least 3 seasons. Inconsistent effort -- including in elimination games like today -- mind-boggling and reflects poorly on players and coaches.

I don't see how all of these problems get addressed in offseason. I think Torts will be back, though I would rather see him go. But please, please, if nothing else is changed, change this: get rid of Del Zotto. I just can't watch him sliding on his ass in the defensive zone or standing behind his own net with the puck waiting for BOTH teams to get ready any longer.

Two things--

Rangers did not play hungry or well most of the game. Stunning lack of effort early in an elimination game that says it all about this team and this coach's ability to motivate them.

That said, Rask looked real shaky -- need to get a bunch of pucks on net early in game 5.

@Josh6 @Fish9876 I love McD, absolutely love him, but I don't think two defensemen are going to wear letters.  I think Step is next in line, and I'd be fine with that.  Class act, quality player.

Although I wish he would be fired, I do not think he will be -- even if the Rangers lose this series 4-0.  But I do think he would be on thin ice, so to speak, and could be canned early next season if there is another slow start.

@jasonshyer None of us is in the lockerroom, but if you're point is that Tortorella treats the players exactly as he treats the meda (and therefore us fans) -- like $hit -- then we agree.

That sort of act wears thin.  I'm convinced this team does not like playing for him, which explains the lack of effort most of this season.

@ThrSage @Fish9876 Look, I know Coughlin isn't the easiest guy to deal with, but I've never seen him mistreat people at the level or with the disdain of Tortorella.  I would not let than man be the face of a franchise.

I read that he said Hagelin "stinks" on power play....since Torts is not known for his humor, I interpreted that as a gratuitous knock on Hags.

Torts is classless for calling out Hagelin in that way. No reason to mistreat a good, hard-working young player like they publicly.

Deep down, you all know Avery was right: the players don't like playing for him any longer (if they ever did). Clown, indeed.

I have said Torts should be fired. I'm thrilled they won the series, but that does not change my point of view. All of the team's failings were on display in this series, other than in game 7, and they are mostly traceable to the coach and his dump-and-chase grind-it-out system.

Let's face it, Hank's stellar play won the series for us and, if he hadn't done that,, we would all be discussing whether Torts should be fired today or over the summer.

Someone else said this, but Dorsett has some Avery in him.  Hopfully the good stuff, and not the bad.  Some Essa Tikanen.  An agitator would be a huge add for this team.

If you are watching Habs-Sens game you will see that players who want to win play hard and physical whether it is their personal "style" or not. Huge difference between that energy level and the crap the rangers have been doing.

Players should self-motivate, of course, but I continue to think these Gus have tuned out their coaches. They play like a defeated team, which they soon will be for the year.

Rangers will never win a cup with Torts. Period.

1 year, 7 months ago on Here's Why the Rangers Can't Score

Torts could have Gretzky, Lemieux and Crosby on a line, with Bobby Orr and Erik Karlsson on D and they'd all dump and chase and grind it out in the corner. He has ruined this team's (far more limited to begin with) offensive instincts.

He will be fired. It may not be soon, but he will be. There will be no Cup with him on the bench. You can be sure of that.

I've said all season this is a one-and-done team (at best). Sadly, I'm being proven right.

You know your team sucks when people extol its good effort for one period of a playoff game. If effort is even a question in May, you have problems.

Here's another prediction -- Hank won't re-sign with this team. Why would he, if he wants to win a cup? Maybe that changes if Torts is gone, but unfortunately that's not gonna happen soon. Hank's gotta be tired of zero offensive support. I know I am completely over Torts' wall game. Don't even get me started on the power play -- should have cost coaching jobs months (or years) ago.
