@nasoov Its a tough choice between Haggy and Zucc, though I absolutely don't think Fast or Duke can replace what Hags brings, overall at present, Hags is the better NHLer than either of them, for the next while anyways.
The same situation with Zucc, although his skills may be replaced by Buchenich - we have to see how good Buch is-he is a possible replacement for Zucc -Remember Zuccarello is going to be expensive as a UFA- it is now known league wide how good he is.

@betweentheworlds @nasoov When it is between Hags and Zucc or MSL Rangers should look at the overall impact on the team.
Hags might stay, he is RFA and can't command the big bucks.Zucc is UFA, he can get that great contract from someone.
Hags is clutch in the playoffs .
Hags speed is not matched by anyone in the league, its also league that is focused on speed now.
Hags is absolute second or third line NHL.Dependable reliable 2nd or 3rd line.Even when his linemates don't complement him-he still is 2nd or third line.
When he has complementary linemates he can play any line.
Thats a lot for an RFA salary.
So Zuccs might be the one out. His outstanding skill is his shoot outs .He is also a dependable absolute NHL level roster player , so the choice is somewhat of a dilemma for the Rangers
The solution is for MSL to take a discount, he has had his big contracts and its all about the Cup and the team now, or at least that should be important. It could also help get him a new contract later if things all work out.
1 day, 23 hours ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
Sign Stepan Zucc Haggy MSL Hopefully we get Marty to sign a discounted contract and don't have to choose .Hags is underestimated as always again in the impact he makes. As exciting as they appear Duclair and Buch are not sure to be equal replacements for a couple of years-that's a SC window that could be lost.I am hoping they can
sign all Rangers core players.

Sutter said the speed of the Rangers beat the Kings b/c the Kings gave up on checking or were unable to check the Rangers.
So thats mainly Hagelin and Krieder ,plus McDonagh Fast and some others backing them up with quick competent skating.
Rangers are a fast team as well as balanced.Hags and Krieds have elite speed .Now, that said, both those guys have to score more goals. They have both been criticized for their play as well,
But its time to acknowledge that having those two speedsters in particular is really important to this team and is causing a lot of problems for other teams.Serious problems.
We need to keep those two as they are the ones that actually make this team "a fast team"

@Say my Name @Isaystupidshitwhendrunk Signing Girardi really annoyed me.That contract is another Sather huge blunder and is already hurting the team going forward with keeping better players. He is a mediocre NHL level Dman who has lapses .He plays just well enough to look OK and a lot of fans don't notice his mistakes. He takes a spot that could be better filled- which costs this team.
I really didn't see the last few games of the SCF last year.Did Girardi F up at all at important times? If he did it demonstrates exactly what the problem is.At this level gotta have the entire team at the high ability status.
2 weeks, 3 days ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
This is a good world class NHL team.Built slowly by Sather and company over 6 years or so.Finally matured and showing results the past couple of years under AV.My prediction is that it'll make the playoffs and then anything can happen.Expectations of many is for a deep playoff run by the Rangers and if they have some luck maybe a spot in the SC Final.I think this is possible for sure.
@Say my Name @AnnoyingJoe He didn't attempt a decent wrist shot( took a sort of wrist push) or slap shot last night.he usually chose his backhand, then he also opted to pass back to Hayes.
I don't want to be Debbie Downer but that makes me wonder if he's OK.
@jnyfive No big deals. This is now a good team .As far as Staal- Really really gotta keep him b/c 1.he basically can't be replaced and 2.you build and prioritize teams from the goalie out,
so as a top dman re-signing Staal should have priority over top forwards.
On a winning team like this, you re-sign crucial players the team needs, or that can't be effectively replaced with available free agents or team prospects. Thats all fairly easy-the difficulty is deciding which UFA players are crucial and who has to be cut -its about money unfortunately.
Stempniak-Moore-Miller line impressed.Miller sees the ice extremely clearly and finds the open man really well.
Fast played a good game.As did Nash, Lundqvist Staal.Above all they managed to stick to the game plan consistently-get the fricken puck out of their zone-no matter what.Consequently, victory. as simple as that.Boom.

It's good. Duclair can now play every night and also at high level juniors in Memorial cup.Playoff experience. Then maybe add depth to SC games for Rangers if they are there.
Going to be interesting to see Buchnevich and Duclair in training camp. They can have this year to rectify any weakness in their games.I'm sure the Rangers will be in contact with them discussing their play in the tourney at some point. As for the Russian goalie, this single game was not a big deal overall for the Rangers, he had a decent tourney.
The level of play that Buch and Duke are going to bring to the team is not clear right now.How many points they'll each get , we don't know. But it's clear they both can play pro level and are going to be useful.
Rangers have to try to keep as many current players as they can and then add their prospects to fill any gaps.
Shouldn't even have to say this but since it's Sather: If Rangers another deep playoff run this year, the priority is keeping the current team core as intact as possible
2 weeks, 6 days ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@KevinMccarthy @J_CKfor30 I think that both of those players have to be kept and Zucc is going to be the odd man out.
My reasons :
1. replacing an elite Dman isn't easy.
2.replacing Hags skills isn't going to be easy.
so the best chance to get a chance of equal value back is by trading Zucc who basically has playmaking skills-not as hard to find as speed and defence skills,
remember we are an SC contender, we don't want to fall off that level if it can be helped.
we have to replace players with equal value.True equal value.
Staal and Hags both have some unique or hard to find abilities.
Zucc, as great an fantastic as he is, does not have the same uniqueness.
@scrangersfan @J_CKfor30 I tend to agree but I think Duclair is going to be a goal scorer who puts up more points than Zucc eventually, when paired with top talent.Could be a lot of goals.
@IcyCup @J_CKfor30 Hasn't been any call ups yet .surprising considering all accounts say he is NHL ready and he's always playing very well for Hartford. He was also one of the last cuts in training camp, I believe. He didn't impress in his preseason, but didn't mess up-Coulda been confidence. In any event he is probably NHL ready and should be able to fill in, just from his Wolfpack play and stats.Might be a pleasant surprise if he gets some games and confidence in the NHL.
Buchnevich also has a strong game.Played physical and hard.Gets an assist and 3 SOG with -2.
In tourney he is 1 goal 5 assists for 6pts -1 with 21 shots.
In tourney Duclair is amazing at 4 goals 4 assists for 8pts +11 also with 21 Sog and PM 16.
Overall, excellent series by both Rangers prospects
3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
Duclair scores a goal on 4 shots and plus 3 in WJ final vs Russia.Got free and had an empty net shot blocked also.Played strong game. Some reports @renlavoietva say he's being sent back to Juniors.
@ChrisB13 @fs2020 Well, your right as far as my broad NHL statement. But the Kane comparison is off because of the skill difference.I should clarify it so I say what the team needs right now and in the playoffs.Anthony is pushed around pretty easily out there. That has an impact since he has to basically rely on his puck skill alone which is met by NHL level opposition,No big deal.
Right now the player who plays is the one who can play the best all round NHL game.Where does Duclair stand right now is what we have to see, not his potential.
If Lindberg or Stempniak or another Hartford player can play a better all round NHL game at this very moment, Duclair should go back. It's a short term thing with the goal being the SC, of course.
Also, dropping a skilled proven player like Hags to the 4th to give Duc a chance to maybe score some goals doesn't make sense. There isn't any room for him really unless its Stemp he replaces and as I mentioned his ability at this very moment is what is measured. So we have to know that.
That was an NHL goal from Duclair, so his games with the Rangers have helped him. What a move to get to the net!
Buchnevich,Duclair and Shesterkin are all going to be playing hard , responsible and aggressive hockey this game.Reason-they all need to impress the Rangers-beside the obvious country pride at stake.
I hear you, especially since people are saying trade core players who fill roles that are difficult to replace, like Hags and Zucc with their skills. As well as prospects who are starting to shine just now. This on a team that is going to have a bunch of players with 10 goals- a score by committee elite team.
Exactly. He is too shrimpy right now for the NHL and would be better served as far as compete after getting another year older and putting on some weight. He is a heck of a talent and I don't think there should be a worry about stunting his development, tho.THis is a guy for whom the AHL was made, too bad he can't go there right now.The Rangers have call ups in Lindberg, and others in Hartford who can fill in effectively if need be.So what can he bring in the playoffs is the only question.and is his talent enough to say replace Stempniak -those are the questions.Does he have to be sent back right away?
@betweentheworlds @J_CKfor30 @fs2020 Amazing that we got him as a 3rd round pick.
Duclair gets a couple more points ,a goal and an assist , in Canada Slovakia game.So that gives him 7 points in the tourney so far.Good show so far for the Duke!
3 weeks, 1 day ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
Going to see this team, and probably these lines against some good teams now. We'l have to wait and see how they do.And if they are as good as they showed this game, is Duclair even going to be able to crack the line-up?If Duke returns I guess it'll eventually be a rotation according to the opponent. But the lines were real good tonight.
I thought Fast might have deflected the Hagelin goal anybody see that goal clearly?
3 weeks, 2 days ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@MikeBlue @fs2020 I disagree with your analysis of Fast diametrically. He is good defensively, in the right place at the right time, intelligent and sees the ice well, anticipates plays, uses his stick well and is basically good enough so that when he's on the ice its most likely the other team won't score.I mean, thats Jesper Fast, not the dude you're talking about.Miller is good too I'm not knocking him at all.But to decry Fast like this isn't a good assessment and its not accurate. We win when he is on the ice, he does his part and helps the team.If Fast can have chemistry with Hagelin and Hayes on the third line and it catches fire-that's a good thing not a negative thing.Same goes for Miller. As for hits, stats can mislead, but they don't lie most of the time, Fast regularly throws hits and checks,so it's relatively meaningless if he's the "Pilsbury doughboy", an effective check is and effective check.Overall, he is much better player than Tanner Glass, for instance. He's quite useful and valuable to the Rangers at an NHL level.
3 weeks, 3 days ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
Competent coaching and adaptability by the Rangers figuring out their opponents Achilles heel -rebound control-and taking advantage of it for most of the game.A skilled team, they should have had even more goals.Glad that Glass was out and Miller and Fast were in.Fast on the third line was interesting, should get more time there to see how he does offensively. If he can get goals and finish, its better than Stempniak. JT Miller should have had some more goals. With these two in and Glass out -it makes a helluva difference in skill level.By the way as far as Glass hitting-Fast had 5 hits and that's not remarkable for him.The only thing we miss by sitting Glass is intimidation, which is only really necessary sometimes at this point.
Good to see Krieder getting faster on his reactions and just shooting as well as being more aggressive. That's how he's gotta play now.He shouldn't be scared to mix it up at the right time if he has to.
3 weeks, 4 days ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@J_CKfor30 Absolute yeah If Duke can play responsible 2 way hockey away from the puck-this remains to be proven-he is a great choice to fill out that line.If he can develop chemistry and be defensively responsible, the 3rd line would be very dangerous. It would be a soft line tho, but if the skill is there and points are there, that covers it.As you said, it would have to be evaluated.
3 weeks, 5 days ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@DP_Snotty @GiveGartneraCup Krieds is OK just needs to get shooting better and quicker. He can go to the fourth line without a problem until he gets it together. If he took some boxing lessons it would help-he's a big tough dude and if he could fight as good as at least John Moore it would be helpful occasionally.
3 weeks, 6 days ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@Say my Name @fs2020 I would concur that Glass should have a place, intimidating those such as Tootoo who would readily take liberties with the Rangers. But he doesn't have to be on the ice against most teams, against whom even guys like Krieder can step up sometimes,And Glass hasn't fought much or been seen to much more that throw body checks.I haven't been impressed by Stemp, he just seems mediocre and Hayes an Hagelin both could use a talent equal to theirs on that line. Duclair perhaps? or Miller? or Lindberg?
Somebody that can supply the chemistry for a potentially dynamic fast 3rd line.
Glass and Stempniak are the least talented players on this team right now.Going to get to the point in the season where one player makes the difference against good opponents.Rangers have to start playing their most skilled players. Jesper Fast plays better every time compared to Glass, also.
Good to see the Rangers prospects realize they have to really bring it in this tournament.Hoping for good tourney from all of them. Buch tied for lead in points on Russian squad.Nice shutout for Shestyorkin.
4 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@KevinMccarthy With AV's coaching style, Glass and Krieder are going to be alternate fourth liners if he doesn't start showing he belongs in the top six.Who is going to take his place-maybe Miller Maybe Duclair or someone from Hartford- whoever can show they belong there and get the goals Krieds is supposed to get.For sure he can't go on like this and expect a free ride being on the top lines.
4 weeks, 1 day ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
Good game.Good tune up for more challenging teams.Devils played tough,Rangers outplayed them on skill. Stepan is great and in his prime all round intelligent and quick accurate hands.
I Still think Hags and Hayes who are good players even on their own, are dragged down by Stemp who is pretty much just a journeyman,That line cries out for another talent.Haggy has just been meh without that extra talented wing.Hayes could use another difference maker too.
The fourth line Fast and Dominic Moore need another talent also.Fast is really good with skill and it makes a difference to the whole team.Dominic is one of the best 4th liners in the NHL
.In the top 6 its good to see Krieder get more involved, everyone else is great doing what their supposed to game in game out. At some point the 3rd and fourth line spots I mentioned have to be improved. Miller? or Hartford?
@supermaz I haven't weighed in on the Staal trade issue, mainly because he was playin so poorly. Now that he is getting back in his good playing form, I'll say that i totally agree with your assessment of him.
Look-it boils down to this -you build from the goalie out- Dmen take precedence over forwards-its a priority decision now.Gotta go with Staal over Zucc or Haggy It's just prioritization-its how you make decisions.
However that is not a choice to be made if it can in any way be avoided. Those are three core players not realisticaly replaceable basically.
Restructure isn't option so another way has to be found somehow.

Rangers should have won this in regulation. Only reason it went to OT was Hank let in a soft goal but he made it up in the shoot-out.he is playing the right way right now.Good to see.Playing aggressive and coming out at the shooter.Great news if he keeps it up.Nice goal by Miller Rangers deserved to win this game and if they play the same level tonight they could score a lot more goals.
Rich Nash is the most skilled, most talented all round hockey player on
the Rangers. The team hasn't seen a player with all of his ability, offence and defence, for a long time.Good to see him shake off last year and get himself back on
track. If he stays in top shape, no reason he can't continue as a top
player for many years, like Jagr or Howe.
1 month, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
Although this line up won- and that is good- against an intimidating opponent ,While Brass is out I would still like to see Glass scratched, Oscar Lindberg brought up from Hartford to third line, Miller to Stepan's wing and Hayes moved to the top line. With Krieder back on fourth line.I think Krieder Moore Fast would be a fantastic 2 way line, and give Rangers the ability to roll four scoring lines. This would all depend on how well Lindberg was able to play on the third line.I think Miller is better at wing and Hayes has the skills to play top line in the NHL.
Rangers defence had lots of practice last game. Now its the Ranger;'s offence's turn to generate more points. LGR!
Would like to see Lindberg get his chance on the third or fourth line.If he has improved at faceoffs he's be OK with one of the Swedes.Good fill in.and good 2 way player which is what is needed to help our D.
2 pts.defensive play worked this time. maybe they'll bring up Oscar Lindberg for a week or so,if he can bring more than Glass. Then try
Rick Nash /Kevin Hayes /Mats Zuccarello
J.T. Miller / Derek Stepan / Martin St. Louis
Carl Hagelin /Oscar Lindberg /Lee Stempniak
Chris Kreider /Dominic Moore /Jesper Fast
Like Hayes- the way he plays he could play top line if he keeps improving. How has Lindberg been on faceoffs in Hartford lately?
1 month, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/2014-articles/rangers-2-edmonton-0.html
Rangers played well Canucks were overwhelmed.Like the way the Rangers stayed with their game, waiting for mistakes and capitalizing with speed and skill.Boom! Canucks were toast immediately and that turned out to be the game. All Ranger goals were beauty and that's nice to see.Hope they continue now on this road trip and the unsuspecting western Canadian teams.
Like the lines and AV's style-you have to earn and prove your place on the top six-nothing entitled.Need a strong physical player on that fourth line and Krieder is that.I hope he fits and does a bang up job.Likewise Miller has to get his points and goals to stay in the top six-he has to continue his productive play.
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
There are only so many opportunities and you have to play consistently at a high level to stick on the Rangers or any other elite NHL team.Miller has to realize that now, no matter how young and dumb he may or may not be.Showcase is possible but I would think if he continues the points on the big team he'll stick and as long as he keeps scoring he'll be with the team.If he slips back to invisibility his days as Ranger could be numbered, and Krieder is in the same boat if he shows up invisible a lot this year. They're not going to trade Hags or Jesper Fast.Hags is core and Jesper Fast has upside that is demonstrated consistantly this year. And I just want to say the only thing those two players have in common is that they're swedish
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/2014-articles/open-thread-1211-is-jt-miller-being-showcased.html
Klein on the powerplay can't be worse than Girardi.Hayes is good-and improving-put him on the PP once in awhile if just for the development for him. When Hayes is on -add Hagelin with him.
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/2014-articles/open-thread-1210-board-of-governors-meeting-wrap-up-kreider-skating.html
Not bad win.Rangers played well. The change to prevent defence in the third didn't work against this quick scoring team and Rangers brainfart D but it might work against a lesser team-I'd see it tried again-no problem. it could work well if the D gets more controlled more practiced at it.
Notables. JT Miller -played well -have to see absolute consistency from him from now on.Hayes: Improving.every. game.Zuccarello- continues mediocre.Mcdonagh-seems to be improving his play.Hagelin-really a difference maker -that line needs a better player than Stempniak-who didn't play bad but Hayes and Hagelin deserve better.Boyle- improvng also.Dominic Moore-always consistent.Kevin Klein-helping this team.
@DP_Snotty Amazing that Girardi has been degrading the powerplay for so many years. He plays just well enough to fool the coaches and then is that mediocre plug that fades the attack with telegraphed shots.
Rangers absolutely had these bums for the first period: second and third?WTF?
2-0 lead and lots of powerplay time and the team can't get a W?This has to change now.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@IhateGaborik @fs2020 He has been consistant tho, except for early last year and this year.I agree that's a lot of money and also wanted to trade him, but if he provides consistant elite goaltending especially in the playoffs year after year- it is a price that isn't a total disaster.
First,Girardi's contract is coming back to bite the Rangers in the ass already.Said immediately it was a Sather brainfart mistake like a lot of others here did. Staal is capable of being basically essential and untradeable he played like that before his injuries-unbelievable.Now though he has to be watched to see if he can get back there. If he can't do that in the next couple of months -he is not untradeable. The thing is the Rangers won't be in the cup picture without Staal playing outstanding anyways.Maybe its a simple choice and its this year.He either plays at his awesome best and Rangers are in the SC picture-no trade- or he can't play well and Rangers really struggle and he's traded.
Lundqvist is going to have to carry this team against top teams. Its why he gets 8.5 mil.Its been that way always with the Rangers-good or bad years.Hopefully he improves again this year as he has before coz that is back up goalie stuff he showed yesterday. No excuse. If he says he was screened then he was out of position those were plenty soft goals.dmen make mistakes- thats the name of the game-the goalie is where the buck stops-excuse the pun.The team in front of him played good enough for a win if he had bothered to show up- 3 goals is good enough to win in this league if your goalie is on his game as he should be.
Krieder has already been mentioned so Zucc is also a player that can take a seat for a game Both these guys have to get to top 6 NHL level-cause they aint' there now.
So... positives.Brassard.f'in great player this year.Fast-he's showing he belongs and is improving each game-plays smart.Hayes- improving every game-helpful always.Hagelin-What can you say, Swagelin-gotta resign this future lifetime Ranger.Stepan-again what can you say-super smart hockey IQ and lightning reactions.Nash-Rick Nash the legend-the most skilled player on the NYR team and showing it this year.
No matter what. You can't win unless your goalie gives you a chance to win.
