Not to be a buzz kill, but there's a certain someone we picked up who stood out on a pretty bad team....

Buchnevich definitely looks legit though. Hoping the transition to the north american game is seamless.

I understand your concern Kevin. If Staal isn't able to reach an agreement by midseason, I think ultimately he gets moved. Especially if Skjei continues to progress this season. As we've seen time and time again, the business side of sports sucks, but I find it hard to believe we'll be able to retain everyone on the roster.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Staal's "demand" is outrageous?  I understand in the salary cap era every dollar counts, but if G got 5.5, Staal is easily worth what he's asking.  As I said in a previous post I think ultimately Staal takes 5.7ish per year on a 6 year contract.

It's nice to finally have several prospects to get excited about.

In other news Staal is apparently looking for 6m per for 6-7 years. Ultimately I think he signs for 5.7-5.9 which I'd be more than fine with.

As we saw during the playoffs MSL not having a letter didn't stop him from stepping up as a leader. Mac deserves the C. I'd give MSL an A without question, but as Josh pointed out it doesn't make sense to give the C to a player with 1 year left on his contract.

@scrangersfan Stralman was very underrated; however, I truly think he's hurt because in the short term the Rangers have in fact found his replacement in Boyle.  Yes, Boyle is "over the hill" but as a short term solution at 4.5 per he should be pretty solid.  He also allows time for Skjei to develop in college.  Hopefully by the time Boyle's contract is up, Skjei is NHL ready and steps in.

Another depth signing as far as I'm concerned. Plus it prevents everyone from being complacent in camp. Competition during preseason is never a bad thing.

Valid point. The thought of Johansen on this team would put us over the top imo. Plus he adds more speed.

More food for thought. Considering our recent track record of trading with cbj, any chance we package Stepan and a prospect for Ryan Johansen? Word is that talks aren't exactly going well.

Kevin weekes reporting rangers look at him as a Center... I'd say Hayes and Miller will be interchangeable on 3rd line.

Sorry to get off topic but for anyone who lives near MSG, the modells at 1293 Broadway is having a closing sale. My girlfriend picked up a bunch of eastern conference champs shirts and player shirts for $3 or less each! The store closes for good this Saturday.

Looking beyond next season, signing Staal is crucial to the Rangers future as contenders.  Yes, everyone is very high on Skjei, but college success doesn't automatically translate to success at the NHL level.  Having Dan Boyle for the next 2 years gives Skjei time to develop but once his contract is up who steps in?  McIlrath has potential but his injury plagued history is concerning.  Hopefully Staal will sign a contract similar to Girardi's, but with PK Subban's ridiculous contract who knows what will happen...

@chrisD The only leverage Brass has is the fact we're thin down the middle... Other than that, he has no ground to stand on regarding that ridiculous contract demand.

Guess we'll see how much Brass really wants to stay with the Rangers after all of this.  After making 3.2 the past few years, a jump to 5.6+ is a bit extreme imho.  If he really is a team player, he'll take closer to 5m for the sake of the team going forward.  If not, he'll sign the 1 year deal and likely be traded at some point.

@Gorangers0525 If Toews can get 10.5 for being a 1st line center, 5.5 for Brass as a 2nd liner center seems like market value. I understand that Toews is "elite" unlike how Brass is perceived. However, this is the current state of the NHL.  What was the point of the last lockout again?

We're pretty screwed cap wise at the moment, which makes moving Staal at some point this season almost a necessity.  Hopefully Skjei is ready to make the jump to the big team next season.

We didnt exactly break the bank with this signing.  After Pouliot (a reclamation project) last season, I have all the faith in the world that AV will utilize Lombardi the right way.  PK specialist + speed + the fact he put up pretty nice numbers in a pretty good Swiss league last season? Sign me up!  To me it seems like Lombardi could be a diamond in the rough, despite his concussion history.

@GiveGartneraCup True.  It would be nice to not wait until the last minute to try re-signing everyone though.  Sather is like Hannibal Lecter.  He plays mind games with all the FA's until he gets what he wants, while creating a hostile situation for no apparent reason.

@johnnyb3910 This is where Sather is out of touch with todays NHL.  Realistically we could've signed Stralman, Pouliot, Brassard, Kreider, Zucc, and both Moores mid season, but nope not with our GM.  The only pass I'll give Sather is not knowing the state of the salary cap for the 2014-15 season.  Other than that, his actions are inexcusable.

Hopefully these negotiations will be done before arbitration hearings. I for one am tired of Sather playing hard ball with players who have proven themselves in NY while quickly writing blank check contracts to big name players outside the organization.

I'm hoping we can sign zucc and brass for around 3.9-4.4 each, kreider ~3, j moore ~2 and we're in decent shape. Hopefully our prospects will impress AV in camp, and we'll go from there. The turnover between last year's team and this one was inevitable; however, Sather has been able to keep enough of the team in tact thus far. 82 game season + playoffs leaves a lot of time for gelling and growth, so I'm not particularly worried at this point.

With the likely significant roster changes, I'd expect the team to start much like they did last season, as the new guys will have growing pains with AV's system.  I've mentioned this before, but getting a player like Mason Raymond, who is familiar with AV's system from his time in VAN could help if the price is right.  JT Miller will likely get every opportunity possible to be a starter, unless his attitude is a detriment to the team.  Out of our other prospects, the only ones who really intrigue me are Duclair and Skjei.  McIlrath will most likely be given the opportunity to be a 6th/7th dman but other than that our prospect pool does not impress me.  With Sather being Sather, I'd expect a trade or two involving our prospects this summer which I'm actually on board with.  Draft tonight, FA 4 days from now.  Get ready for what should be an interesting summer...

The long term demand is a deal breaker. If Sather wasn't the gm.players might take home town discounts to stay on Broadway. However, with Sathers track record of just shelling out money on irresponsible contracts, that's why players do what pouliot, cally and stralman did/ are doing.

2 months, 4 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/

Pouliot was arguably our most physical forward other than kreider. With the possibility of losing Boyle we cannot afford to lose size. Like Kevin said, 3years at 2.5 per is fair to both pouliot and the team.

At $1m or less Sather would be stupid not to bring carcillo back. Depth is why we got so far this season, and injuries are inevitable during the course of an 82 game season.

I'd also like to see carbomb flip off more Philly fans. Just saying...

Staal said he wants his contract situation settled this season, so trading him isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if we get a nice return. I honestly feel Stralman covered up a lot of mistakes that Staal made, so finding a new partner whether it be in house or through fa is definitely possible.
