I get questions from clients about EINs a lot and Tim is absolutely correct: please don't pay for assistance to do this - it's incredibly easy to do alone. You can watch a video tutorial here http://youtu.be/1L4nRCGOYaI (which also discusses how to get a state tax ID number) or call the IRS' help line for assistance. Don't waste your money on an EIN service.

These are all great and I would add an 8th - Letting yourself get lazy with the numbers. A lot of times small businesses just get by instead of putting the time and effort into tracking, recording, and strategically planning their finances.
