The problem with bicycle racing is that there is no easy entry to the sport, which is understandable given the nature of it, but most cyclist I know are happy with paying to participate in group rides or a Grand Fondo without the competitive aspect. I believe USAT has done a great job at attracting otherwise none competitive athletes to participate. Which ever of the 2 institutions which finds a way to convert those group riders over to the sport (old and young) will prevail.
Focusing in increasing amateur participation and not in catering to the next Lance will provide the funds to get what they need to achieve their goals.
