I love the Rangers. And beer.
It's hard to assess these grades without accounting for context. Hunwick is a C when compared player-to-player with someone like Mac, but that's not his job. If you look at the external forces (role on team, contract, expectations, etc.), which you should, than Hunwick is better than a C.
Management only wants each player to play a certain role. Hunwick stepped in to fill the last D spot admirably. He was steady and as noted chipped in on offense on occasion. He's exceeded expectations which should be at least enough for a B.

Last night was a disgrace. Decimated D corps or not, that was an abysmal effort. This team better come out flying on Tuesday or I'm going to start to worry.

I've been here since the early days. And while I don't post too often, I check the site daily (OK, hourly). You've done a hell of a job and should be very proud of what you've built.
Like many, I knew this day would come. You're a family man and this must be a massive time commitment. So thanks Kevin. Thanks for all the work you put in to create this little corner of the internet for us Rangers fans.
Let's Go Rangers.

Unrelated fantasy hockey question: Would you keep Semyon Varlamov as a 15th rounder or Joe Pavelski as a 9th rounder?
Great article, very informative. Well done Adam. This kid is going to be a player. He's a gamer.

@rjonyr87 I'm not worried about Gabby at all. We know what an enigma he can be and how easily rattled he gets. I'm more concerned with their size. But like Kevin says, nobody is giving us a fighting chance, and that's just crazy.
I genuinely think we're going to win this series. Keep sleeping on the Blueshirts everyone; we'll see who hoists her at the end.
Can someone please post a gif of Fleury floundering all over the ice during the final moments? I swear he looks like a dog that cant find his tennis ball. What a joke that dude is.

I thought the PP looked pretty good last night despite no goals on it. The last few weeks its been a joke but I'm starting to see shades of that deadly PP from the middle of the year. Quick passes, better shooting opportunities, more zone time.
It's something AV has done well his whole career and with this kind of lineup, we need to figure it out in a hurry to make any kind of run.

@rstoz No way. Maloney never lets the game breathe. I'm a Joe fan, through and through. Maloney is like the annoying uncle who corners you at get-togethers and won't shut up.
10 months, 3 weeks ago on St. Louis Hasn't Felt Like Himself With Rangers
The teams are calling about a rental. That doesn't help give Callahan's camp any leverage as these teams aren't interested in giving out a long term contract.
I also don't like "circle back"....might be reading into it too much but that doesn't like a priority or that there is any confidence in progress. More of a just a "here is what we heard this week" report to gain more leverage.
He's my favorite Ranger since the 90s, but I'm starting to prepare myself. He's gone.
12 months ago on Callahan, Rangers to Talk Contract This Week; Multiple Teams Calling With Interest
@holton67I dont think its a matter of not liking him.
I think I speak for most people when I say he's a great Ranger and has earned a tremendous amt of respect. The issue here is overpaying him. Only bad teams overpay for past contributions. Good teams hand out contracts based on future expected return...
1 year ago on Rangers Make Two Offers to Girardi; Interested in McGinn
I think Dom Moore has been good lately. Well rounded game. He's effective and sound. I think you gotta roll with this current lineup until there is an injury or a lag in performance.

@mmars79And I'd like to go on record saying Cally is my favorite Ranger of the last 10+ years...
1 year ago on Richards Misses Practice, Will Play Tonight; Cally Wants to Remain a Ranger
@mmars79I agree with your assessment of the situation, and I think Cally genuinely DOES want to remain a Ranger, but 5 @5.5 is still too much. Its what is going to happen, but 3 years and 5 surgeries from now nobody is going to like that deal
This is sad. These are probably my 2 favorite Rangers over the past decade. Blue collar, team guys who show up and don't make much fuss...until now. 7 years is ludicrous for both. I see us keeping 1 of them for 5 (probably Girardi).
The worst part is Callahan will have limited trade value. With those demands, he'll surely be just a rental who has been healthy half the year and is more of a leader than a "plug in skill guy" that people like to buy at the deadline. SHIT!

I usually don't do this but I have 2 tix to tongiht's game vs. STL and have to work late and can't make game. I will sell them for less than face. I have tix electronically and can email them. Section 217, row 3 seats 11 & 12 - Rangers shoot twice, TVs a row in front...they're very good seats.
Face is $76 a piece, I will part with them for $50 because fuck my boss. email email@example.com if interested. Sorry if this is breaking some sort of blog rule.
1 year ago on Let's Watch Ryan McDonagh Drill an Islanders Fan In The Groin
This is very good news. I'm not expecting a stud, just a stable big-bodied presence that gets the job done night in and night out. Great value and great fit in exchange for Del Zotto. Good stuff!
1 year ago on So Who is Kevin Klein?
Its simple really: We removed a liability in exchange for long term stability with an element of much needed toughness. It also makes a guy like John Moore a better fit as he's free to move to his natural position and gains a more sound partner, which should let him take a few more chances offensively.
Its a strong trade for the Rangers IMO. We're in better shape on the blueline now than we were yesterday.

1 year ago on Rangers Telling Teams They're Not Moving Girardi; Callahan Could Be Traded
Ugh, how does Del Zotto have 9 lives? He BLOWS. I'm hoping this is just showcasing to some team that he might be serviceable enough from the left side to play in the NHL....you know, if you squint really hard and lower your standards a whole bunch.
1 year ago on Del Zotto on the Left Side & Feeling Comfortable
@dahjayI threw my remote on that pick. I stand by the throw.
1 year, 1 month ago on Allen Could Make Del Zotto Even More Expendable
@SmellyKisioExactly. Other teams aren't going to overpay for a guy who stinks on tape. They are NHL GM's, they know what he is. Move him for whatever we can and get him off the books, and more importantly, off the ice.
I agree with the above 100%...but I'm so sick of having to coddle the modern athlete. When did these guys get so fragile? Nut up, you're hockey players. Come out, play hockey and play it well and stop getting in your own heads and needing constant reinforcement for your fragile psyches.
1 year, 1 month ago on Lundqvist, Rangers Need to Start Having Fun Again
Oh I hear you re: Gomez, but one thing we've all seen is Sathers graduation from that mindset. He has done a good job of erasing some past mistakes (see: turning Gomez into McD) and the Rangers - partially bc of the Torts influence - really started to alter their approach toward building a team. I don't think we've gotten away from that, we just see a lack of effort from the guys capable of "playing the right way", which to me, is on the players themselves or the coaches. Its an organizational thing, but I think backbone players like Cally adn Staal will be the first to tell you they aren't happy with their play this season.
1 year, 1 month ago on Vigneault Hints At Change In Personnel As Team Holds Closed Door Meeting
We need to unload Del Zotto for a big, bruising, rock-steady defensman. Throw in a couple picks and don't target a guy with too much offensive upside and get it done. We will be much better for it.
1 year, 1 month ago on Could Bickel Be Recalled Today?
Spazz, did you steal my avatar? I thought I was the only one who knew where to find a NYR Mega Man Sprite....
We have a core of home-grown/well developed talent, a superstar goalie and a superstar scorer. We've developed guys like Chris Krieder into of the most promising young forwards in the league and moved overpaid underperformers like Gaborik and Gomez, while holding onto most of the parts that made this team 2 years ago so effective (Prust and his un-matchable contract aside). I don't love the Richards deal, but 1 year into it and every year prior to that he was a different player than he is today -- and Sather, who isn't to blame for his on ice deterioration, will have a buyout mulligan to make it all better.
My point is, I don't blame the GM when guys are not playing to their potential or playing with heart. That falls on the coaches and the players. This team, with the personnel they have, should be MUCH MUCH better. Like Kevin said: There's more than enough skill in the
locker room to be above a .500 team, which only proves this team lacks
the proper heart and character to get the job done. Disgraceful.
How is Sather to blame for this? He has put a roster together that most people would sign up for in a heartbeat. He gets the guys on the ice, he isn't responsible for motivating them once they are on there.
That is the coaches, and the players themselves -- who somehow have escaped culpability in this. These guys are on cruise control.
Nash is a stud. Plain and simple. Love the guy.
1 year, 1 month ago on Nash Took Vigneault's Challenge Personally
Give it up. No productive week let alone productive decade coming from Del Zotto. He logged a ton of minutes last night because he was being scouted, and he showed his true colors. It probably cost us another 2 points to showcase that scrub, just move him and be done with it already. He truly, truly blows.

1 year, 2 months ago on Lundqvist Has to Make That Save

1 year, 2 months ago on AV to Stick With 20 Game Workload for Talbot
So true. With Torts back there, we don't score that goal. I think (er...I hope) we'll look back at this game as a major turning point in this season. We have to follow it up with a strong performance in the home opener. And we need to get healthy.
1 year, 3 months ago on Redemption for Zuccarello
@FREE MASHINTER @Scott_from_Jersey @IMPRISON SATHER Agreed, except we're in October right now. Talk to me about post season success when we get there, but AV has had more regular season success than any coach in the league over the last 5 years. I don't want to become an AV supporter on this board, but I really think there is some scapegoating going on. The players need to play better - more of an edge, more goals, better decisions and better passing.
1 year, 3 months ago on Flyers 2, Rangers 1
@IMPRISON SATHER They won 2 presidents trophies and led the NHL in goals and pp efficiency during that time. They struggled in the playoffs when they had no goaltending, but I dont think 2 presidents trophies is long-term under-achievement. I don't love AV, but you cant call his time in Vancouver luck, he was the head coach of those teams...
I thought Krieder had a strong game. The rest I agree with. We blow right now.
@ChrisP This season? The guy can't play. He's a joke and when he leaves the Rangers will never stick with another team...
