Could not agree more with everything in this piece. Arguably the worst player in hockey. Waste of cap space. Im not sure why some are being dismissive of this as "just a 4th liner". We just saw the Rangers ride "depth" and "roll four lines" all the way to the final and give the kings all they could handle. You cant roll four lines with tanner glass in your top 12 forwards. We had a strong 4th line last year that could actually get in on a forecheck and actually sustain offensive zone time. The numbers show (the numbers are indisputable) that when tanner glass is on the ice his team gets pinned in its own zone. There were better options that would have come cheaper that is what makes this frustrating.

Glass' raw hits and blocked shots numbers are deceiving. You cant block a shot or register a hit if your team has the puck. Unfortunately whenever glass is one the ice, his team never has the puck so his hits and block shots are going to be high. Come playoff time he will be a healthy scratch because his only redeemable quality is that he can punch people

Come on...you know the half naked waitress has only momentarily stepped out of the frame

2014 jt miller is better than 2014 brad richards. I agree
This isnt just some depth signing that will be inconsequential. At 1.45 mil he is getting paid to actually play for us(something he cannot do well, every single stat says so)
What does that have to do anything? Should I close my account because I "never laced them up" before? Please point me in the direction of your nhl stats. When on the ice glass will contribute to the rangers getting scored on more often. There were/are better players to get than tanner glass that would come cheaper and for less term.
Im not saying we dont need sandpaper on the 4th line...we do. Im not saying we dont need a guy that has competent fighting skills...we do. That guy is not and never will be tanner glass.
Yeah that's great! Except he doesnt intimidate anybody. We could have signed carcillo for 500k less and for 1 year....and carcillo is a better hockey player
You mean the guy that was scratched by the pens in the playoffs? On a team that had a terrible bottom 6. You mean the guy that pens fans are happy that he wasnt re signed. You mean the guy that doesnt have a single positive stat nor a single positive attribute other than he can take punches to the face pretty good?
m fine with losing pouliot, boyle, stralman. Although theyre very good players, they asked for things we just couldn't give them and sometimes things like that are out of your control. That being said I am just so upset at the tanner glass signing there really arent words for me to describe it. He is possibly the worst player in hockey. He is a black hole. He is subtraction by addition. Forget the whole 'roll four lines' thing. That is gone with tanner glass being in your top 12 forwards. Even if we bury him in the minors the rangers pissed away 500k of cap space when they have none. Makes no sense. He makes the team worse.
A case could be made that tanner glass is the worst player in hockey. And they signed him to 3 years 1.45mil. That contract is a disaster
Rangers were doing so good today. Pouliot seriously got 5yrs by 4 mil, see ya!! Boyle wants an increased role, thanks for your services. Stralman too many years too much money, I hope you enjoy it. Dan boyle will increase offense from back end and any drop off in defense will not kill us (thats why hank gets paid 8.5mil). Also not a long term deal (somebody will be ready to play after his deal is up: skjei, mcilrath, allen, bodie, anderssen). They signed dom moore to a perfect deal, love that he is back.
Then they decided to give tanner glass 3 yrs 1.45mil...seriously? We are going to pay this guy 1.45 to be a healthy scratch. You could have pulled anyone off the free agent list to get punched in the face, on a 1 year deal. Ill be happy to come back on here and say how wrong I was on glass if this deal works out (spoiler alert...it wont)
I think i read somewhere (ill try and find a link) that buch is committed to KHL this year and his goal is to make team out of camp next year.
Lol no we don't. Tampa has it
Carcillo wasn't/isnt signed for 3 years and he was a 13th forward. Glass Isn't being paid 1.45mil to be a 13th forward

Come playoff time when the rangers want to play whistle to whistle tanner glass will be useless...USELESS!! 3 YEARS!!??
Tanner glass is one of the worst players in hockey. 3 YEARS??!!!! ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND??
That is pure insanity on pouliot
Spezza going to dallas.
The rangers would pay vrbata more than pouliot because he is a better player
Any chance the rangers will have any interest in radim vrbata, ufa from arizona. NYR probably wont be able to afford him but he would be a perfect fit along with brass and zucc. NYR have earmarked 4 mil for stralman, if they strike out on him maybe use that money to go after vrbata. Just a thought
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
Not enough. Its at least 2mil lower than what was expected earlier in the season
Spezza? Ott wants to move him today or tomorrow. Maybe its simply a cap move because the cap came in lower than expected and NYR dont want Dorsett at 1.6mil
Rangers just moved dorsett for 85th pick tomorrow (3rd) round. Saved about 800k of cap space if he is replaced on 4th line by a rookie (fast, lindberg, borque, mccarthy etc). Wonder if is this is precursor for a bigger move...
You mean the guy that was almost cut after the first month of the season wants a multi year deal? Please.... anything more than 1 year at 2 or 2.25 mil(even thats high) will be a disaster
Plus it is being reported that rangers have interest in dan boyle. If stralman cant be retained he may be a more realistic stop gap until allen, mcilrath, skjei are ready to play or if john moore might develop into a viable 4th defenseman

I think id rather not trade klein. Not sure he will return a package that would make it worth it for the NYR. Diaz is a fine player but he will not have an everyday spot on this team. You say youre willing to go as high as 1.75m for him to play bottom pair D. Does diaz present enough of an upgrade over allen or mcilrath to be worth him counting a 1mil more of cap space than the rookies? I dont think so.
They dont have enough money to sign all of our free agents to keep the team together. We will lose some of our players because of the cap. Regardless of kreider signs a bridge or long term
Ive been thinking the same thing on kreider. I dont think the rangers can afford to sign him long term because they need every dollar this offseason as it is. Brayden schenn just signed 2 yr 5 mil and kreider shouldnt get above that in a bridge deal. The diffference in cap hit between a bridge and a long term deal for kreids is upwards of a million dollars and im not sure NYR have the cap space for that.
It appears that the stats only show for players that are listed on the roster on the team site. San jose no longer shows stats for dan boyle. Dont know exactly how their databases work but it seems it is just a query for players listed as still being on the roster. Same reason callahan stats are not listed for NYR regular season...no longer on roster

@mando24179 haha citing this article doesn't do anything. Are you trying to make a point that brassard is a good player? I never said he wasnt. You still have not presented anything that would resemble an argument to support youre original point that brass is a better center than stepan. But when you say that I can take my stats and "stick them" I guess there is no reason for this to continue
1 month, 4 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@GregQuinn im not saying he isnt terrible at faceoffs. He is. This conversation isnt about whether we need a true #1c. We do. For what price are talking about? stepan is under contract for 3.07 cap hit this coming year and if he doesnt get hurt is probably a guarantee of around 60pts or more.
You again failed to give me a reason brass is better than stepan. The #1 powerplay after the trade deadline and all throught the playoffs was step kreider st louis mcdonagh and richards. Pouliot was on that line too, is he one of our 3 best forwards. You are using false logic
Last time I watched the games stepan was on the #1 power play, was he not? Because brass can win a faceoff hes a better center? You cant give me 1 quantifiable reason that brass is a better center than step other than maybe shooting percentage. Step plays #1 line, #1 pp unit, more points, more assists, historically scores more goals, plays on the pk and is universally regarded as a superior defensive player. Again, brassard is not a better center than stepan
Haha brassard is not a better center than stepan and is going to cost more than stepan this season
Im indifferent about bringing back carcillo. I would not want to see him slotted into an everyday 4th line role but a 13th or 14th forward who could slot in for emergency and short term injury situations I would be fine with. Regardless of the fighting aspect carcillo does try and bring energy when the team is flat and tries to fill that agitator role that "mixes it up". NYR could replace carcillo with literally anybody else but if they do look to replace him I hope his replacement plays with an edge not some lifeless 13th forward that cant play hockey
Of all the free agents I feel that pouliout is the only release guy. Honestly, there isnt anything that pouliot can do that JT miller cannot without factoring that he much cheaper (cap hit of 800k). If miller is not traded it seems like a no brainer to slot him in with brass and zucc. If pouliot is kept, rangers shouldnt go any higher than 2m per season and even that is a stretch. Captain taco was great for us this year but unfortunately for him, it's time to move on
2 months ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
The only real question here is with the rangers up against the cap crunch do they play hard ball and try to sign him to a bridge contract with a lower cap hit now or go about it like they did with mcdonagh and lock him up long term which would bring a higher cap hit now but buying some of his ufa years which would have his cap hit potentially below market value in a few years. Ultimately I think he gets bridged 2 yrs and something between hagelins 2.25m and stepans 3.07m.
As an assistant solely responsible for PP I can definitely get behind oates
More likely to lost Samuelson to a head coaching gig than arniel. Arniel will be back. Ulf may not be
I dont think the rangers will be able to keep boyle so retaining moore is that much more important. No more than 2 yrs no more than about 1.85 aav should be fair on both sides but I think it will be slighlty less. Adams numbers above seem spot on
Shawn thornton is garbage. He gets paid to get punched in the face and make sure pk subban is properly hydrated. We already have a guy to punch people...mcilrath. I want NO part of a 4th line with shawn thornton on it.
Love boyle. Love him. Everytime he did something good this post season I silently said to myself "im gonna miss him next year". The problem is has the overpayment of a 4th liner ever worked out for anyone? It will be sad to see him go but if the NYR want to build something sustainable there are places you need to be economically efficient and this looks to be one of those cases. Lindberg seems to be a real NHL player and im suee could handle 4th C pretty well. Adam, how high do you think NYR could (or should) realistically go on Boyle? No higher than 2.5m and that may be high?
Or he could just accept the QO, no? Play the year out at that number and become a ufa next summer
I could be wrong but I would be very very surprised if the salary is negotiated below the QO
@Josh-CK Yes I do. Its going to be like 70 million cap limit.
@Josh-CK not really since richards buyout is going towards zuccarello's raise(probably something around or just below 4mil cap hit), kreiders raise (something around 2.5 caphit on a bridge deal) and with girardi and henriks cap hits going up 2.2 mil and 1.7 mil each. Brass is going to look for something around 4 mil cap hit and thats going to be tough to keep if we bring on thornton or spezza
@Josh-CK ok yeah maybe thats a little much but that doesn't mean san jose is desperate to get him out and we can get him cheap. Plus to get his contract under the cap brassard will probably be moved
