Although Hayes was signed as a UFA by the rangers he will still follow the regular free agency rules for NHL players. He signed w/ NYR for 2 yrs this past summer so he is signed through next year. After next year he will be an RFA and under team control until he is 27.

Cam Atkinson is a name now being thrown around on the trade block. Wonder if NYR would be interested and what the price would be. Rather have him than vermette.

The problem is that the rangers dont have a good enough top 9 to essentially give up our 4th line. We have 1 elite skating player (Nash) and then a bunch of really really good players fall in after that. We flat out dont have the top end talent that could cover for us being a 3 line team. We arent the blackhawks with kane toews sharp or the pens with Crosby and malkin letang. The way the Rangers will win is with depth. All 12 of our forwards and all 4 lines need to be better collectively than the opponents. As long as Glass is in the lineup that will never be the case. The 4th line will not be productive in any tangible way. That is the simple reason there is so much discussion on Glass.

Rangers cant continue to play both hagelin and fast in the top nine at the same time. Hagelin should be on 3rd line with hayes and fast on the fourth. If hagelin is included in a trade then fast is fine on the 3rd line but playing them on the same line is redundant, unless you are trying to put together a shutdown D line (but then putting hayes and brassard between them doesnt make sense. That should be D moore). JT miller would be the perfect fit for that line (hags/fast - hayes - miller) but AV hasnt put that together yet.

He was going to burn the first year of his ELC no matter what. But if he appears in 40 games he will be a UFA at 26 rather than 27

The question the rangers need to answer is whether or not they want Duclair to earn an accrued season toward his free agency clock. If Duclair is on the roster for 40 games (im not sure if the games he was away for WJC count or not) then it counts as an accrued season and he can become a UFA at age 26 instead of age 27.
I think you are reading that wrong. Waronice.com shows Dan Boyle with a 50% raw corsi but his corsi rel is 5.8%, the best on the team. Jt miller has a 47.2 raw corsi but a 2.6% corsi rel. Glass raw corsi = 44% and Glass corsi rel = -6.6%. Only Girardi has a worse corsi rel than glass(girardi = -7.7% corsi rel)

Lindberg now!! He's more than earned a call up. No more glass. This cant happen.

NYR can demote glass but he would have to clear waivers first. Assuming that happens, any cap hit over 925k will still count against the NHL salary cap. Glass cap hit of roughly 1.45m would still count about 500k against NYR cap. He can also be bought out during the summer that would count roughly 700k against NYR cap for 2 years and the roughly 400k for 2 additional years.

Welp, the Rangers are a team built around their supposed strengths of speed and possession. Then they went out and got out skated and didnt see the puck all night. Tampa is a far superior team. [Insert obligatory tanner glass comment here] . Also, staal is working on playing his way out of here. Nothing of these first 17 games shows me that staal should be retained. Dont make the same mistake you did with Girardi. Move him at the deadline, there will be interest.

Only two guys were interested in playing hockey tonight. Hayes and hank. Maybe kreids in spots. If the team no shows against pitt then i'm pretty sure there are plenty of other guys dying to get into the lineup. Lindberg, miller, fast, malone, bodie. I agree with Josh, personally i'd like to see lindberg (basically a point per game player so far this year) get a chance somewhere in the bottom 6 replacing stempniak or glass.

@IhateGaborik @rangermom oh please do tell me more about all that happens on an NHL ice, I'd love to hear it. Assuming you are speaking from all of that NHL experience you have, right?
@McPhee37 @rangermom you have no idea what level of hockey anyone on this blog has or has not played...
You mean to tell me that AV handpicked glass to come here and then tells him to not 'play his game' (whatever that is)? When does it become glass' fault that he just not effective and does not have a role on this team?
In fairness to carcillo, he also drew more penalties
The only problem with this is...you know...TANNER GLASS DOES NONE OF THESE THINGS. As i stated above. This isn't an argument against 'fighting' or 'tough guy'. Tanner glass really prevented someone going in hard on our captain ( not saying it was a dirty hit). He really prevented someone from punching hagelin in the back of the head. He really prevented someone from purposefully shoving kostka into our last night. He wont prevent the next guy from trying to line up one of our players with his head down in the nuetral zone. Dorsett and Carcillo are far superior players. We don't have anyone the current roster that EFFECTIVELY plays that role. Unless a trade is made, lindberg or fast are the best options for our top D forward line
Tanner Glass really makes it hard for the Rangers to play 4 lines. Duclair and Hayes were basically playing a man down every shift. I don't understand why people on this blog continue to cape up for tanner freaking glass. He does absolutely nothing but take up space. He doesn't do the things that his role says he should. He doesn't fight. He doesn't stick up for teammates. He doesn't get in anyone's face. He doesn't agitate. He doesn't intimidate. He doesn't draw penalties. AV can't trust him with D zone assignments. He runs himself into the boards more often than i see make an effective hit. This isn't an argument against 'toughness'. This isn't an argument against 'hitting'. This is an argument against tanner glass. Is he reason the Rangers lost last night? No of course not. Does he do anything tangible to help this team win? I dont think so. The solution here is to put hagelin or stemp with duclair and hayes and put a forward capable of being on a defensive shutdown line with moore. Someone like fast or lindberg. That would give the Rangers 4 balanced lines and allow their offensive minded rookies to get sheltered minutes with a linemate that will help therm.
The only reason D moore is a '4th line' center is because he is the most capable at handling defensive zone starts. I agree that D moore is a very very good and versatile player. But if the question is would i rather have D moore start more shifts in the O zone and have a less capable player getting more D zone shifts that lead to the rangers getting pinned in their own end more often, Id rather keep D moore as the defensive line specialist. Moore getting more D zone starts allows AV to give his offense minded players more Ozone shifts.

It's not that he is stuck on the 4th line, he is stuck on a line with guys AV also doesnt want starting in the defensive zone. AV wants to give duclair sheltered zone starts. After all of the lines filled out, the only 2 left were glass (ugh) and Mueller. I agree with you completely, once step comes back moore glass and stemp should be the '4th line' and duclair should be put with linemates he can actually succeed with.
Haha well their corsi in the 3rd period was quite good.

Girardi on powerplay is taking years off my life.
If the rangers want to give Duclair a game here and there off because he's young and theyre not sure he can hold up over an 80+ game NHL schedule at 19, that's fine. To say that Duc cant find a spot in this top 9 is insane! AV is out of his mind! The obvious solution here is to put Hags on the 4th line with moore and Malone and have Duc somewhere in the middle 6. That would be a much better 4th line. Hags ice time wouldn't even really need to reduce all that much. It isn't a demotion for him. But for right now it's a much better fit to have him on 4th and Duc in top 9.
Great article! The numbers revolution is passing a lot of otherwise smart people by. Have been trying to make this point that possession numbers DO show value of "physical" "gritty" "sandpaper" players. The teams that have 4th lines that can drive possesion while being physical will have a lot of success (last years NYR anyone?). Teams that ignore possesion numbers of "physical" players will be left behind. As long as Glass is in the lineup the NYR WILL NOT have a bottom 6 that can drive possesion. It's that simple.
Unfortunately the key phrase there is years ago. Im not disputing that G is bringing Mac down, he is.
4 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/2014-articles/hey-its-not-all-bad-with-the-rangers.html
I dont think putting G and Staal together would look good. Neither have any puck skills and both are slow. Boyle and Mac would be a good pair for sure but that 2nd pair would be a nightmare imo
Brassard was also muuuch better last night than in first 3 games. We need to start getting some good consistent offensive momentum from the bottom 9. Nash MSL Duke and kreider seemed to be only ones really driving offense before last night. Last night malone hayes and brass looked good/better offensively.
Soooo...how many games does it take AV to realize that malone is a far superior player than tanner glass and since we apparently need our obligatory face puncher at all times, our 4th line should be some combination of malone moore fast and miller.

Glass would be no less effective if he didnt play with a stick at all. That's his "game"

Tanner Glass with a huge hit! Hooray for Tanner Glass!!! That is what this team is missing! Wait...what do you mean he was out of position, wiped out his own teammate and it DIRECTLY led to a 2 on 1 scoring chance for the leafs? I thought flying Glass elbows were a good thing?
Has anyone seen enough from stempniak to say he deserves to make this team over duclair hayes or fast? Dont think i have
4 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
Minnesota sent a player back to juniors after 13 games last year. Lost a year on ELC. Why would duclair be any different?
5 months ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
I dont think that's right. It's my understanding that you can demote a junior eligible player at any time, but once that happens he cant be recalled. He is gone for the season and a year comes off his ELC.
The thing about duclair is that it is my understanding that his contract will not slide no matter what. That 9 game thing doesn't matter for duclair. The NYR could keep duclair( if he deserves it) for the 6 weeks step is out and then send him to juniors.
Really excited to see Duclair and Hayes together

Could not agree more with everything in this piece. Arguably the worst player in hockey. Waste of cap space. Im not sure why some are being dismissive of this as "just a 4th liner". We just saw the Rangers ride "depth" and "roll four lines" all the way to the final and give the kings all they could handle. You cant roll four lines with tanner glass in your top 12 forwards. We had a strong 4th line last year that could actually get in on a forecheck and actually sustain offensive zone time. The numbers show (the numbers are indisputable) that when tanner glass is on the ice his team gets pinned in its own zone. There were better options that would have come cheaper that is what makes this frustrating.
7 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/2014-articles/the-clear-cut-case-of-tanner-glass-hes-not-good-at-hockey.html
Glass' raw hits and blocked shots numbers are deceiving. You cant block a shot or register a hit if your team has the puck. Unfortunately whenever glass is one the ice, his team never has the puck so his hits and block shots are going to be high. Come playoff time he will be a healthy scratch because his only redeemable quality is that he can punch people

Come on...you know the half naked waitress has only momentarily stepped out of the frame
2014 jt miller is better than 2014 brad richards. I agree
7 months, 4 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
This isnt just some depth signing that will be inconsequential. At 1.45 mil he is getting paid to actually play for us(something he cannot do well, every single stat says so)
What does that have to do anything? Should I close my account because I "never laced them up" before? Please point me in the direction of your nhl stats. When on the ice glass will contribute to the rangers getting scored on more often. There were/are better players to get than tanner glass that would come cheaper and for less term.
Im not saying we dont need sandpaper on the 4th line...we do. Im not saying we dont need a guy that has competent fighting skills...we do. That guy is not and never will be tanner glass.
Yeah that's great! Except he doesnt intimidate anybody. We could have signed carcillo for 500k less and for 1 year....and carcillo is a better hockey player
You mean the guy that was scratched by the pens in the playoffs? On a team that had a terrible bottom 6. You mean the guy that pens fans are happy that he wasnt re signed. You mean the guy that doesnt have a single positive stat nor a single positive attribute other than he can take punches to the face pretty good?
m fine with losing pouliot, boyle, stralman. Although theyre very good players, they asked for things we just couldn't give them and sometimes things like that are out of your control. That being said I am just so upset at the tanner glass signing there really arent words for me to describe it. He is possibly the worst player in hockey. He is a black hole. He is subtraction by addition. Forget the whole 'roll four lines' thing. That is gone with tanner glass being in your top 12 forwards. Even if we bury him in the minors the rangers pissed away 500k of cap space when they have none. Makes no sense. He makes the team worse.
A case could be made that tanner glass is the worst player in hockey. And they signed him to 3 years 1.45mil. That contract is a disaster
8 months ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
Rangers were doing so good today. Pouliot seriously got 5yrs by 4 mil, see ya!! Boyle wants an increased role, thanks for your services. Stralman too many years too much money, I hope you enjoy it. Dan boyle will increase offense from back end and any drop off in defense will not kill us (thats why hank gets paid 8.5mil). Also not a long term deal (somebody will be ready to play after his deal is up: skjei, mcilrath, allen, bodie, anderssen). They signed dom moore to a perfect deal, love that he is back.
Then they decided to give tanner glass 3 yrs 1.45mil...seriously? We are going to pay this guy 1.45 to be a healthy scratch. You could have pulled anyone off the free agent list to get punched in the face, on a 1 year deal. Ill be happy to come back on here and say how wrong I was on glass if this deal works out (spoiler alert...it wont)
