It comes from the total number of corsi events for when the player is one the ice. If player A is on ice for 6 shot attempts for his team and 4 shot attempts against his team, then his corsi for % would be 60% (6 out of 10 total). If player B is on ice for 4 shot attemps for and on ice for 8 shot attempts against his corsi for % is 33% ( 4 out of 12 total)

Stepan is reeeaaally struggling. Let me say first that i love step. But his play is a problem right now. His possession numbers are terrible and his wowy charts are not a pretty sight. The step, MSL, kreider line has never had any real sustained success. The step, nash, kreider line got their faces caved in last night (-12 corsi for, -13 CF, -12CF respectively) against a bad carolina team. Kreider with step = 48 CF%. Ck without step = 56 CF%. MSL with step = 47 CF%. Msl without step = 49 CF%. Step with kreids = 48 CF%. Without kreids = 39 CF%!!! Not really sure what the solution is (if there is one)

Brooks said on twitter that NYR is looking for another forward today. I think that has to signal that glass' reign of terror is coming to an end.

Id like to see sheppard slot in on 4th line next to moore and fast and keep Hayes Hags and Miller together. Use sheppard on 3rd line for spot faceoffs a few times a game sure but he doesn't bring enough offense to justify splitting miller away from hayes and hags.

It doesn't. It adds to the cap number. This essentially guarantees hags departure. And all of those who said hags is expendable and easily replaced by duclair next year....whoops

Sather strikes again. What a terrible trade. NYR better win the cup this year because if they don't it's a long way down to the bottom. Blatant disregard for the future health of the franchise.

Well brady skjei would be an option at entry level money. A lot of people on this blog like conner allen, also really cheap. If not you could find a 3rd pairing D man(essentially what boyle has been playinh the last few weeks) for a lot less money than 4.5 mil

No problem. Id hate to see zucc walk because sather is playing hard ball over money while giving out ridiculous money to Girardi, Boyle, and Glass.

Contracts can be bought out in the offseason. If the rangers bought him out they would be responsible for 2/3 of the remaining contract overthe next 2 yrs. After this year he has 1 yr at 4.5m. If NYR bought him out they would be on the hook for 3m over the 2 years (1.5m each year). That clears 3m of space for next year. All of this info is from war on ice.com, they recently added some contract info and buyout calculator if anyone is interested. You are correct that if he retires on an over 35 contract the rangers would be on the hook for his entire 4.5m cap hit. If you buyout an over 35 contract they still follow the regular buyout rules.

1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/

Reply

Rangers should just buyout Boyle in the offseason. There's your cap space right there for zucc. Problem solved. 5.25m/5yr or 5m/6yr. That would do it.

Although Hayes was signed as a UFA by the rangers he will still follow the regular free agency rules for NHL players. He signed w/ NYR for 2 yrs this past summer so he is signed through next year. After next year he will be an RFA and under team control until he is 27.

The problem is that the rangers dont have a good enough top 9 to essentially give up our 4th line. We have 1 elite skating player (Nash) and then a bunch of really really good players fall in after that. We flat out dont have the top end talent that could cover for us being a 3 line team. We arent the blackhawks with kane toews sharp or the pens with Crosby and malkin letang. The way the Rangers will win is with depth. All 12 of our forwards and all 4 lines need to be better collectively than the opponents. As long as Glass is in the lineup that will never be the case. The 4th line will not be productive in any tangible way. That is the simple reason there is so much discussion on Glass.

Rangers cant continue to play both hagelin and fast in the top nine at the same time. Hagelin should be on 3rd line with hayes and fast on the fourth. If hagelin is included in a trade then fast is fine on the 3rd line but playing them on the same line is redundant, unless you are trying to put together a shutdown D line (but then putting hayes and brassard between them doesnt make sense. That should be D moore). JT miller would be the perfect fit for that line (hags/fast - hayes - miller) but AV hasnt put that together yet.

He was going to burn the first year of his ELC no matter what. But if he appears in 40 games he will be a UFA at 26 rather than 27

3 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/

The question the rangers need to answer is whether or not they want Duclair to earn an accrued season toward his free agency clock. If Duclair is on the roster for 40 games (im not sure if the games he was away for WJC count or not) then it counts as an accrued season and he can become a UFA at age 26 instead of age 27.

I think you are reading that wrong. Waronice.com shows Dan Boyle with a 50% raw corsi but his corsi rel is 5.8%, the best on the team. Jt miller has a 47.2 raw corsi but a 2.6% corsi rel. Glass raw corsi = 44% and Glass corsi rel = -6.6%. Only Girardi has a worse corsi rel than glass(girardi = -7.7% corsi rel)

NYR can demote glass but he would have to clear waivers first. Assuming that happens, any cap hit over 925k will still count against the NHL salary cap. Glass cap hit of roughly 1.45m would still count about 500k against NYR cap. He can also be bought out during the summer that would count roughly 700k against NYR cap for 2 years and the roughly 400k for 2 additional years.

Welp, the Rangers are a team built around their supposed strengths of speed and possession. Then they went out and got out skated and didnt see the puck all night. Tampa is a far superior team. [Insert obligatory tanner glass comment here] . Also, staal is working on playing his way out of here. Nothing of these first 17 games shows me that staal should be retained. Dont make the same mistake you did with Girardi. Move him at the deadline, there will be interest.

Only two guys were interested in playing hockey tonight. Hayes and hank. Maybe kreids in spots. If the team no shows against pitt then i'm pretty sure there are plenty of other guys dying to get into the lineup. Lindberg, miller, fast, malone, bodie. I agree with Josh, personally i'd like to see lindberg (basically a point per game player so far this year) get a chance somewhere in the bottom 6 replacing stempniak or glass.

The only problem with this is...you know...TANNER GLASS DOES NONE OF THESE THINGS. As i stated above. This isn't an argument against 'fighting' or 'tough guy'. Tanner glass really prevented someone going in hard on our captain ( not saying it was a dirty hit). He really prevented someone from punching hagelin in the back of the head. He really prevented someone from purposefully shoving kostka into our last night. He wont prevent the next guy from trying to line up one of our players with his head down in the nuetral zone. Dorsett and Carcillo are far superior players. We don't have anyone the current roster that EFFECTIVELY plays that role. Unless a trade is made, lindberg or fast are the best options for our top D forward line

5 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/

Tanner Glass really makes it hard for the Rangers to play 4 lines. Duclair and Hayes were basically playing a man down every shift. I don't understand why people on this blog continue to cape up for tanner freaking glass. He does absolutely nothing but take up space. He doesn't do the things that his role says he should. He doesn't fight. He doesn't stick up for teammates. He doesn't get in anyone's face. He doesn't agitate. He doesn't intimidate. He doesn't draw penalties. AV can't trust him with D zone assignments. He runs himself into the boards more often than i see make an effective hit. This isn't an argument against 'toughness'. This isn't an argument against 'hitting'. This is an argument against tanner glass. Is he reason the Rangers lost last night? No of course not. Does he do anything tangible to help this team win? I dont think so. The solution here is to put hagelin or stemp with duclair and hayes and put a forward capable of being on a defensive shutdown line with moore. Someone like fast or lindberg. That would give the Rangers 4 balanced lines and allow their offensive minded rookies to get sheltered minutes with a linemate that will help therm.

The only reason D moore is a '4th line' center is because he is the most capable at handling defensive zone starts. I agree that D moore is a very very good and versatile player. But if the question is would i rather have D moore start more shifts in the O zone and have a less capable player getting more D zone shifts that lead to the rangers getting pinned in their own end more often, Id rather keep D moore as the defensive line specialist. Moore getting more D zone starts allows AV to give his offense minded players more Ozone shifts.

5 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/

It's not that he is stuck on the 4th line, he is stuck on a line with guys AV also doesnt want starting in the defensive zone. AV wants to give duclair sheltered zone starts. After all of the lines filled out, the only 2 left were glass (ugh) and Mueller. I agree with you completely, once step comes back moore glass and stemp should be the '4th line' and duclair should be put with linemates he can actually succeed with.

If the rangers want to give Duclair a game here and there off because he's young and theyre not sure he can hold up over an 80+ game NHL schedule at 19, that's fine. To say that Duc cant find a spot in this top 9 is insane! AV is out of his mind! The obvious solution here is to put Hags on the 4th line with moore and Malone and have Duc somewhere in the middle 6. That would be a much better 4th line. Hags ice time wouldn't even really need to reduce all that much. It isn't a demotion for him. But for right now it's a much better fit to have him on 4th and Duc in top 9.

Great article! The numbers revolution is passing a lot of otherwise smart people by. Have been trying to make this point that possession numbers DO show value of "physical" "gritty" "sandpaper" players. The teams that have 4th lines that can drive possesion while being physical will have a lot of success (last years NYR anyone?). Teams that ignore possesion numbers of "physical" players will be left behind. As long as Glass is in the lineup the NYR WILL NOT have a bottom 6 that can drive possesion. It's that simple.

Brassard was also muuuch better last night than in first 3 games. We need to start getting some good consistent offensive momentum from the bottom 9. Nash MSL Duke and kreider seemed to be only ones really driving offense before last night. Last night malone hayes and brass looked good/better offensively.

Soooo...how many games does it take AV to realize that malone is a far superior player than tanner glass and since we apparently need our obligatory face puncher at all times, our 4th line should be some combination of malone moore fast and miller.

I dont think that's right. It's my understanding that you can demote a junior eligible player at any time, but once that happens he cant be recalled. He is gone for the season and a year comes off his ELC.

The thing about duclair is that it is my understanding that his contract will not slide no matter what. That 9 game thing doesn't matter for duclair. The NYR could keep duclair( if he deserves it) for the 6 weeks step is out and then send him to juniors.
