@AndrewWelter I think it's tough to say because by its essence, reality television is the removal of genuineness. Is Ryan Lochte's family dating and fashion and intellect any more or less authentic than The Situation's search for girls that are DTF? Real or not, I think both speak to wanting to be entertained vicariously through a life that can be perceived to be somewhat more exciting or different than your own.

@TampaJoey @apj274 Sensationalism? Flash? Katz is doing actual reporting of actual news here. In fact, it's the exact opposite of Tebowmania.
1 year, 7 months ago on Jim Boeheim calls ESPN's Andy Katz an "idiot" and "disloyal" | February | 2013
Clearly there's a difference between candor and bullying. If Boeheim feels wronged, there's a way to handle it that isn't publicly shaming Andy Katz for not falling in line. That's why Boeheim's use of "disloyal" is so troubling. If Boeheim has a critique of Katz's journalistic integrity, so be it. But to portray it as a betrayal of Boeheim as if he's Katz's first responsibility is ridiculous. That's the exact culture that brought upon all the handwringing over Joe Paterno's mythology.

@PackerFan @poit77 My problems with First Take are welllllll documented, but the question remains, why edit out a word that's clean? If it's just an innocent stutter, what needs to be edited? If it's a mistake that we all think SAS said that word and he vehemently denies saying it, in theory there should be nothing to edit, no?
1 year, 11 months ago on Stephen A. Smith controversy leaves many questions, few answers
Oh I agree, I'm not saying SAS should be fired or anything. The problem (as we've learned from so many other walks of life) is that the cover up is worse than the crime. Had he admitted to saying it and apologized, everyone would have moved on a lot sooner. That said, SAS blamed the internet instead of taking responsibility and ESPN willfully covered it up for him while pretending there was nothing to cover up. Made the whole thing much worse.

@rich1914 You've got to take the defense into account. Vince Carter might as well have dunked over a 7 foot traffic cone in the Olympics. Griffin's dunk is more ferocious, he's higher above the rim, and he gets hit mid-air by one of the toughest defenders in the league. Advantage Blake.

@Packey@AwfulAA I shouldn't even have to respond to this, but...
Yea, in the 7th inning, it didn't seem like a good idea for Buck to "rip off" his dad and that's why I replied "I hope not." But, when the moment happened it felt right, I recognized what a great all-time moment in baseball it was and the call seemed appropriate. I also mentioned the same thing in the live blog last night.
It's like getting insanely upset when you say, "I hope my team doesn't run the ball," they do and score a TD, and you say, "hey, that wasn't all that bad."
Anyways, the Twitter page clearly identifies who's handling tweets and we have multiple writers that are allowed to have different opinions at different times.

@CHJ so you're saying SMW is making this stuff up? and all the other venues that report the same numbers are lying too? you're right, it's all a vast conspiracy against MLB with Sports Media Watch at the center...
seriously though, the numbers above are accurate, as i'm sure are the ones from the AP... but it depends on how you want to twist them.
if you want to lean on the WS still being popular television (which it of course is in relative terms) and doing well compared to other networks then that's fine, but it denies the obvious facts and problems of the numbers decreasing badly in recent years, especially when huge teams with huge fanbases don't show up
2 years, 11 months ago on World Series Game 6 Postponed, But Nobody's Watching Anyways | October
I really think the game slowing down and just being slow in general may have something to do with it as well, as well as all the factors y'all list. Let's face it - football and basketball highlights sell a lot better to younger fans than baseball. With Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, etc, is someone that grows up in that kind of environment going to want to watch a game where a wide majority of the time is spent with inaction?
On top of that, is it any surprise the Rangers are involved in all these low rated games? Baseball (MLB and its TV partners) have given us zero reason to care about Texas at all the last two years.
Also we had the blackout rule mentioned before kickoff according to folks on Twitter.

@bburg@jason9289 The point of the post is to observe a flaw in ESPN's statistic that they hyped as one that would revolutionize the way we view quarterbacks. Last I checked, the guy who invented the original QB rating hasn't held his nationally televised special yet. We're fair with every network and will call out or applaud when it's appropriate, not just slurp up what we're fed by networks.
@anonjohn45 The fact that it's a rate statistic enables ESPN to rank Week 5 QBs (which you can do on the QBR page) and say definitively, "Tim Tebow had a better game than Aaron Rodgers." Ludicrous. Anyone who watched the two games knows this is insanity. But, if you want to reduce this conversation to calling people "retards," I suppose it's your right to do so.

Love the idea Garrett. Before the World Series, you could have a series between the second and third B league teams to make it into the A league. For English soccer, it's a promotion playoff with the final referred to as the richest game in the world because of all the money the winner makes in the Premier League. Argentina for example, does it differently where they take a running average. Their top club was relegated this season and it led to riots. The system also gives fans up and down the league something to take interest in, even at the bottom of the league.
If you like relegation, maybe you should give soccer a chance...
