Imagine the Dodgers winning the NLDS and then losing to the Giants in the NLCS in the exact same way the Cardinals did

actually don't do that

@YadierMolinasOedipalComplex @cvrinc @Literally PFP Clint Hurdle, for starting Gerrit Cole in an almost-guaranteed-to-be-meaningless Game 162 instead of the Wild Card Game that, again, was almost assuredly going to have to be played.

Though, idk, even that you can't REALLY hate on, since he'd have basically had to throw a shutout.

@YadierMolinasOedipalComplex @Literally PFP Fuck the Nationals more, for scoring 1 run between the 7th inning of Game 1 and the 6th inning of Game 3.

Come to think of it, fuck the Nationals again for blowing the 2012 NLDS, since they'd have had home-field against the Giants in that year's NLCS.

Headed into play on September 16th, the Brewers were just 4 games behind the Giants for the second wild card, having knocked 1.5 games off the lead in the previous five days. The Giants rose to their determined, playoff-hardened, gritgutty selves by finishing the season 6-7, getting swept by the Padres and getting blasted by their archrivals in a series where they also lost the division that they'd once led by 8.5 games, and got bailed out only because the Brewers immediately went in the tank and finished 4-8.

@Disgruntled Goat @Literally PFP @Jacopo (How is this a bad plan!) You don't think Friedman is going to be all about finding underpriced talent on the open market for reasons relating to the fact that it's lack of cost is due to its talent being valuable but undervalued by the current market? Maybe I was being a little bit too cynical in regards to the whole "he looks at players and sees nothing except lines of data" joke, but...it seems hard to believe that he wouldn't follow the general Moneyball business method.

@Jacopo (How is this a bad plan!) @Literally PFP @Disgruntled Goat Again, though, we look at those names and we think "those guys are the center of our offense and the leaders of our clubhouse, how could we possibly replace them?"

Friedman looks at them and thinks "1.1 WAR for $20 million, 3.9 WAR for $21 million, 3.5 WAR for probably about $20 million on the open market. Alright, I need to find nine wins and if I can find them for $45 million I'll be content. Go!"

@Purple Drank @Literally PFP @Disgruntled Goat Well it's not exactly identical, no, but there are similarities. Admittedly, no, Stan hasn't come out and literally said "We are cutting our payroll. It is definitely happening and there is no other way to interpret this statement." but still, there's evidence for what I'm arguing if not definitive proof.

@Disgruntled Goat @Literally PFP It's a lot easier to express an opinion when it's in one 499-word comment, and not broken up over an entire conversation thread.

8 hours, 44 minutes ago on Coming Soon: Season Reviews

Reply

@Purple Drank @Disgruntled Goat @Literally PFP I suppose. But, at the same time, I'd be worried that we'd be replacing guys who we can pretty much count on to post solid offensive numbers (Gonzalez and Kemp) with guys that we can "project" to post solid offensive numbers (because, if a guy is undervalued by the market, it'll probably be because he doesn't have a track record of success but has the ability to potentially have one someday).

8 hours, 45 minutes ago on Coming Soon: Season Reviews

Reply

@Disgruntled Goat @Literally PFP I fear it happening because it's very similar to what Depodesta did post-2004. Now, the "difference" is that it was done almost definitely because he was ordered to cut payroll by McCourt...but, okay yeah, I'm seeing that report that the Dodgers want to cut payroll this offseason and kind of establishing it as fact, but what can I say, it worries me that the situations are similar, and thus that the outcomes will be similar.

8 hours, 46 minutes ago on Coming Soon: Season Reviews

Reply

@Disgruntled Goat @Literally PFP That Friedman could possibly think "Well, I've got a bunch of big contracts on this team, and nobody will give me anything close to equal value for the bad ones, like League and Wilson and Ethier and Crawford. But, hmmm, people could give me decent value for Kemp or Gonzalez, even though they're over-30 guys playing non-essential defensive positions making $20 million-plus per season and only worth about four wins per season, because other teams still value counting stats like RBIs and home runs, of which Gonzalez and Kemp had a lot of. Hmmm, let me explore trading both of those guys to idiot teams that still value those stupid stats, so that I can fill their roster spots with guys making far less who could provide similar value. Like, huh, Scott Van Slyke was worth 2.7 WAR this year in just 246 plate appearances, and Joc Pederson is one of the 20 best prospects in all of baseball. Shit, I might not even need to acquire any replacements if I trade those guys!"
