Would you have liked for him to have gone to arbitration? This is the salary cap era! There is always going to be cap issues and contracts that have to be signed. Chances are that Staal gets traded maybe Stephan signs with another team next year who knows?! This is the best possible deal for a guy that stepped up above and beyond this past season

1 year ago on Lundqvist to Start vs. Canes; Zuccarello a Game-Time Decision
@shoot_the_goalie @calithirteen@IcyCupsupposedly Buffalo is the only team in the market that would be willing to spend $6 million on him. This dragged out for too long, the trade offers weren't that great....san jose was willing trade a few prospects and 1st draft....doesn't sound like someone worth over 6 mil a year. Buffalo will go into the free agency market and could press him for less than 6 million. I love Cally and miss him but I think he will be lucky to get 6 yrs 6 million from anyone else.
1 year ago on Tying Up St. Louis for Callahan Loose Ends
@shoot_the_goalie @IcyCupI agree but you can't tell me when his agent is claiming 6 yrs for $7 million is a "hometown discount" that the agent is not all in Cally's head pumping him up. Any sane agent would of said, Cally, you are over valuing yourself here and unless you want to test the free market or possibly be traded, you need to come down (mabye he did and this was Cally's plan all along). Plenty of blame on both of them but when Cally ends up signing with Buffalo in the off-season for $4-5 million he is going to look like an idiot for not taking the 6 yr $6 million from the Rangers.
By the way I'm not sure this was mentioned before but it bears repeating: "In Boomer we trust" Boomer Esiason was the first one to break this story that there was an emiment trade sending Cally for St. Louis right after the Olympics. He got it right with Del Zotto and nailed it again with Cally. Clearly he has strong connections in the Ranger organization and when Carton allows him to speak about hockey (nobody cares about hockey boomer), we should be listening! He maybe a football guy, but he is obviously a die hard ranger fan!
In other hilarious news: The isles who gave up Mouslon and 2 draft picks for Vanek, received a conditional second-round draft pick and prospect Sebastian Collberg from the Canadiens in an exchange for Vanek. So in the end they gave up Mouslon and 2 1st round picks for 1 2nd round draft pick and a prospect. Garth Snow, you have outdone yourself yet again!

I still think it was a mistake for the rangers to not go after Moulson. I would not have minded watching Stephan or Boyle go for him straight up.

St. Louis made this all possible along with Cally's agent. I'm disappointed in him and he is a bigger fool if he doesn't immediately fire his agent!
In unrelated news, Broduer is being traded to Minnesota pending his approval according to the WFAN.
1 year ago on Rangers Decline Callahan's Six-Year, $6.3 Million Per Year Proposal
I'm trying not to give in to the hype but this is looking crazy. I would be sad to see Cally go, but at the same time St. Louis would make a nice consolation price.
1 year, 1 month ago on Rangers Asking Price for Callahan
I still have to believe that at the end of the day this is nothing more than a business tactic on Callahan's part. Let's face it, like Lundquist this is Cally's last chance at a big contract so it makes sense to go after every penny he can possibly get even if he is not worth it. Every other person in the world would do the same. No matter what, Sather has a deal on the table for Cally and I have to believe that this is going to go to the 11th hour when either Cally or Sather will blink with one or both moving more toward a reasonable agreement. Fingers crossed. I love Cally but you can't justify that kind of $ this late in his career with the numbers he puts up and I believe he knows that he won't get that kind of contract anywhere else. It all comes down to Cally and whether he is willing to test free agency or stay in NYC for his whole career.
1 year, 1 month ago on Callahan for St. Louis Likely Not Happening; Anaheim Back on Girardi
Not for nothing but Lundquist should be ready to go in terms of jetlag. He is flying West from Russia which means the time zone change is going in his favor. It's when you fly East that you get serious jet lag due to the time zone change as you lose hours with the change. But either way, it still sucks being on a plane for that long.

1 year, 1 month ago on Callahan's Agent Hasn't Spoken to Rangers or Other Teams
According to your logic, every team with just youthful talent should dominate the league and the GMs should just trade away all of it's older players. From a hockey standpoint you couldn't be more wrong. It's unrealistic to think that a team will just trade away any guy who reaches 27 (besides I'm sure a lawyer would have a field day). What type of player would want to play there knowing they will be shoved out in 7 or 8 years. From a business point you forget the impact a solid well loved veteran can have. They selll jerseys, they sell seats, and endorsements (i.e. Dereck Jeter: they yankees didn't have to give him the contract they did. That contract was for 2 reasons: 1) to continue to sell a brand that Jeter has developed for the yankees 2) A thank you for all he has done to help build the Yankees into what they have become. ) brandon Prust was 27 when the Rangers let him go. Most would not tout him as a highly skilled youthful player but more a grinder with a physical toughness most teams would die for. Look the effect that had on the Rangers when they let him go. Sather admitted that had a bigger impact on the team then he anticipated.
I get what your saying and no 1 player is worth more than the team and sure some fans would blindley sign their fav player forever despite better options for him. Is Callahans offer too high? Absolutely. Does this mean the Rangers are better off without him? Depends on what is available for him but in Cally you lose the moral leader of the team and it will have an impact on them. Who would fill that role? Nash maybe....Richards doubtful.
Your assumption that GMs always want youthful talent is laughable when you see what Sather has done over the last decade: Shannahan, Jagre, just to name a few.
Ultimately, I think Cally is trying to draw out as much money as possible because it is probably going to be his last chance to get a big deal and considering what Sather has thrown out in the past (see Redding) I'm sure since he grew up through this team, he feels he is entitled to an overpaid contract. It is his right to go after the money and anyone who calls is greedy is a hypocrite because we all ask for raises at some point in our lives.
1 year, 1 month ago on Do the Rangers Need to Exchange "Character" for Skill?
@Kevin DeLury nailed Kevin! Look at what happened with Gabby, Nash and Richards last year.....(granted Richards is not a young player) They never developed good chemistry and it resulted in Gabby being traded. The Islanders had a young team last year and put up a great fight against the Pens forcing their starting goalie to the bench. But how did it end up: The veterans of the Pens dominated and took the series back.
How did Richards, Nash, and Goborik work out? Mismatching talented players does not always create good chemistry especially when Sather is the architect and letting Cally go could have a potentially damaging effect to the chemistry of this team considering he is the heart and soul. He is asking way too much and obviously if Sather could let Messier go why not Cally. At the end of the day I think a deal gets done. I just can't see Cally walking away from this team for one and 2) look at what transpired over the last year. This team rose up and ousted a coach and you can't tell me that Callahan played no part in that, being the captain of this team. So Sather obliges him and a year later is going to trade him? It doesn't make sense. Besides for Sather, what's 1 more bad contract if it keeps Cally for the remainder of his career. He already locked up Hank and despite all logical rational, he won't buy out Richards either. Dolan will never fire him, the Rangers' revenue will continue to rise and so will the salary cap until the next lockout!

@DruBreezay@gravey94I brought my wife and 2yr old daughter at the time to a rangers/sabers game. My daughter loved it. There was a fight and she jumped up screaming! Then Boyle scored late in the third and seeing the look on her face when the Garden erupted is one of those moments that will stay with me forever. However, by the 3rd period she got a little cranky and didn't want to stay in her seat anymore so we left. My son turns 1 next month and I'm hoping to bring them both to a game next year! Have fun!

@JoshKaye@calithirteen I didn't say the comment was directed squarely at me but since you did comment on something I had, I figured I throw in my 2 cents. I get what your saying and respect your opinion about letting DZ play to improve his worth but honestly, how much does his value suffer when he makes bonehead plays like last night. They are just rumors but there is now way Sather has not been shopping him around and taking offers this whole season
1 year, 2 months ago on Lightning 2, Rangers 1
@JoshKayeso how many more times this year do you think DZ should continue to play as long as he keeps having mental breakdowns that result in odd man rushes that result in goals against? Just because he puts together 4 - 5 consistent games with only minor mistakes doesn't mean he is worth keeping especially given what is expected out of him. as for his trade value...teams have been putting in offers for him even when he was a healthy scratch. The NHL is a league where you can struggle with one team, get traded to another and become a superstar. DZ will not be a superstar here.
As for Hank, my only comment was that Hank of yester year stops both of those goals. He's been playing well but just not at the caliber of past seasons.
@Rangers_54@calithirteenyep and he knew he blew it. Just not vintage style Hank we are used to.
More proof of why Del Zotto needs to run out of town. Not only did they do that exact same play 3 shifts earlier as AV stated, AV warned the team about that play before the game. IF you can't get your head out of your ass on a faceoff to prepare a play that you have already seen and warned about, then it's time for a new job. Maybe a nice office cubicle job will suit DZ better. Not for nothing but both of goals would have been stopped by Hank last year. Not happy with his play. Big players were a no show tonight and the Refs could not press the F - U RANGERS button fast enough tonight. No interference called when Hank get's blasted; Cally's high stick when it's lifted by a defender, and the list goes on. These refs called such a one sided game that it allowed the Lightning to seal the deal w/ their goalie's top performance. Move on to detroit!
@Scott from SEC 224@Kevin DeLury@JoshKaye@calithirteen1) Richards is not worth the cap space he is occupying. 2)Richards has no business on the power play especially at the point...scary when he's playing d on a fast rush into our zone....plus for every goal he scores, he shoots 15 shots wide on open nets 3) I'd rather see Miller develop with the way this team is playing 4) saying Richards can't be touched because he is the top goal scorer right now is laughable. Nash was out for a 1/3 of the season, Stephan isn't scoring much and this team up until recently has struggled to score (old news). 5) A veteran player should have never came into the lock out season as out of shape as he did and he still has not fully bounced back to where he was 2 years ago. 6) Lastly, this was obviously a joke. Sather would never make a move like this.......Shit we are still waiting to see what he does with Del Zaster!

I don't understand why people were complaining about carbomb fighting w/ a 3-0 lead including the awful nbc analysts. Did he take an instigator penalty? No. Did the rangers come out flat after the fight? The complete opposite. Like you mentioned here, the flyers started to get chippy and I'm tired of seeing our goalies get run through with no response. Just seeing and hearing Carbomb drop the F-bomb from the bench (great job NBC) WAS AWESOME AND WELL OVER DUE! Can't wait for Dorsett to get back w/ Car Bomb! This team looks amazing!

Kevin I'm started to feel like this blog is like Big Government in the book 1984 where every day the headlines change the facts of what is actually going on. When Nash came back from his concussion and was on fire, and then responded to AV's comments about guys stepping up, you wrote on here how you were happy with his play and how the Rangers got the better end of the trades committed with Columbus. I get he is slumping right now but who isn't on this team. He was never an Ovi, Crosby type player to begin with. He'll turn it around soon enough and for you to say that maybe he should be bought out before Richards has to be a joke. Right?!
The light push!!! Watch how 3 of the Rangers on the ice immediately turn to the Ref with their arms up screaming for a penalty......Are you F***king kidding me! I get it was Nash and Stefan on the ice and clearly they are not fighters but jesus christ! I've played in non-check roller hockey leagues U30 and when my goalie had been run into or someone even slashed him, I went ape shit. Didn't care how big and I'm not a big guy nor a fighter. One thing you learn in hockey is that your goalie is off limits and anyone who makes contact even if accidental gets run through. I've had it with this team and showing no fight at all!

i love Ryan callahan's style of play. He wears his heart on his sleeve and gives his all. He is not a big guy but is not afraid to be physical. That however, it explains his injury streak. Honestly, nothing would make me happier than seeing him retire in a rangers uniform. I would hope that he would be realistic in his contract negotiations in that he probably won't get much more than what Sather is going to offer him. he is a great leader for any team and I would hate to see him in another uniform.

Where did you hear that? I remember somewhere on this site that AV and his assistants had reviewed hours of tape from last season to determine weaknesses and strengths. I could be wrong obviously but I thought they had reviewed a ton of tape.
1 year, 3 months ago on AV Already Trying to Save Face
at the end of the day the coach doesn't make the save, forecheck, pass the puck, crash the crease and score. these guys are professionals not pee wee league. he made a comparison the redwings who have remained a dominant team for over 2 decades unlike the rangers.
Explain to me how this team would be any better with any other coach? It's still the same underachieving bunch that lack heart right now. No one to blame but themselves not AV!
I don't think he is deflecting blame at all. I'm sorry but the fault is with the team. 2 different coaches, 2 different styles, same result. I thought Torts needed to go but now after seeing this performance this season after getting what they wanted in a coach like AV, it's time to blow it up. AV made some important changes and seeing defensemen jumping up in the offensive zone and better power play is great! But you can only do so much with the materials you have. We are mid season and still shifting lines around to figure out chemistry. If these guys don't want to play hard at the Garden, then it's time to send them packing.
What would you expect AV to do? Come out and blame Sather (his boss) for hiring an offensive minded coach and doing nothing to make the roster more offensive minded? he is adjusting his style to the players he has unlike Torts who continued with the same awful power play setup despite being one of the worst in the league. This season is looking like a bust. These guys can't play consistent hockey from shift to shift. This is a mess and it's time for a shake up
