As much as I love the downtown arena in theory, in practice it just seems infeasible. Ottawa has too much of it's population living in Kanata, Barfhaven, and Orleans. I don't know much about the LRT but having lived in Toronto right near the ACC for the last 5 years I've witnessed the subway/GO crowds and I can't fathom the LRT handling the needs of an 18k stadium getting out. As for driving to the game, the infrastructure getting in and out at the current CTP is a nightmare and that was with a farmer's field to work with. How are you going to move 5000 cars through the downtown core at the same time? People might point to Bluesfest as a comparable example but the difference more people are willing to walk and bicycle in the summer. Bluesfest is also finite to 2 weeks where concessions can be made around the area. 41 home games in the dead of winter is a different kettle of fish.

This signing is another piece to perpetuate mediocrity. Sneak in and see what happens has got to the WORST strategy in all of professional sports. I'm sounding like a broken record but every Stanley Cup contender had to go through lean years. The Sens need blue chip prospects that you find in the top 3 of the draft. At this rate the Flames are going to be more competitive in 3 years.

This is getting to farcical levels. This team's management is way too loose-lipped , way too small town and way too focused on the short term that they'll never win a cup, not under Murrnyk anyway. It's getting really hard to stay loyal.

The comments below saying it's all good are proof that the Ottawa Senators fan inside the TSN1200 fishbowl haven't a clue. Take a look at the rosters of the teams that actually have a chance to win the cup. They are so far out of Ottawa's league I'd prefer the Sens be demoted to the AHL at this point. Take the blinders off people and realize you're starting to sound like naïveLeaf fans.

"As a mid-cap team with a strict internal budget" !?! Let's call a spade a spade. They're a bottom budget team, 26th overall in the NHL. They can't afford to spend on quality players and they can't draft high end prospects. The future looks bright...blinding.

@dzuunmod @TrevorKluke I strongly believe the Oilers will get it together in the very near future. The Islanders are run by a businessman with a puppet GM. The Panthers and Blue Jackets are terrible examples to support my theory, you're right.

I never thought tanking this season was a good idea. But Gbaby has pointed out many times that if Ryan walks, that trade was basically a 2 year rental for a team that had no hope of winning the cup anyway, leaving the cupboard bare of 2 prospects.

Hemsky and Spezza could be great, sure, but if you've read the last couple of articles by Graeme and Mendes, defensive breakdowns have cost this team WAY more than lack of goal scoring. When the game is on the line you need your best players on the ice. Spezza is not trusted to be out there. I'm not saying he isn't a great player but he's not a guy you depend on when the game is on the line.

Expectations should be realistic. When the Sens were a cup favourite in the late 90s early 2000s they still couldn't get it done. It's the hardest trophy to win and to think that a team that takes as many penalties as the Sens do, gives up as many shots as the Sens do, and gives up the lead as many times as the Sens do is pipe dream. The Redblacks have a better chance of winning Lord Stanley next season.

EXACTLY! The team needs a goddamn gamer. Most contenders have 2 or 3 of them. The Sens had 1 and he was thrown to the curb.

After Saturday's loss I'm questioning my loyalty to this franchise. I can't take mediocrity anymore. I've said it on this blog time and time again, you need to be bad to be good. Floating around the playoff bubble does not work when you're a bottom budget team that depends on the draft. Anaheim trades away a perennial 30 goal scorer and they're going to fill the stable with another elite prospect, one that has time to develop while Getzlaf and Perry continue to carry the team. Look at all the teams that are challenging for the cup this year and they've all gone through a shitty stretch of seasons where they stockpiled elite prospects.

If the Sens don't have a legitimate chance to draft McDavid, I'm done.

"He’s not doing himself, his assistant coaches or his organization any favours by not offering any explanation for why or how this process came unfolded."

I have to disagree here bud.
1. If he was told to do this by someone up the food chain then he is doing himself a favour. By being a good soldier and not crying about it in the media he isn't putting his job security at risk.
2. If upper management/ownership made the call then he's doing the team a favour by not letting doubt creep in to the dressing room about who actually makes decisions regarding coaching.
3. He also protects his boss and employer from being torn to pieces in the media, keeping any shred of respectability they have left..ahem..Mad Melnyk.

Stick a fork in this team. They're DONE. And people think I'm negative. I'm a realist bud. A REALIST!

@Nichols6thSens @TrevorKluke Ah yes. I always forget the PR spin. It really feels like the team is stuck in limbo and needs to decide if they have the ponies in the system. We don't have a top 50 NHL forward at this point unless Spezza found the fountain of youth during the Olympic break. Looking at the teams that are realistic contenders:
Chicago: Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp
Pittsburgh: Crosby, Malkin, Neal
Boston: Bergeron, Lucic, Krejci
Los Angeles: Kopitar, Carter, Richards/Brown

If the Sharks fail again this spring Doug Wilson could head north to the capital...no bloody chance.

We are cursed to have ever gotten an NHL franchise in the capital. Players don't want to play here. Fans are fickle and the Bank is rarely sold out unless the Leafs or Habs are in town. If we had never become Sens fans we would have probably cheered for the Penguins, Red Wings or Avalanche, all power houses of the early and mid 90s. The joy of seeing our team hoist the cup would be memories of our youth and the future would look bright, blindingly in comparison to the mediocre .

Now we have Melnyk's personal finances compounding the problems. Let's not be Leaf fans and stay loyal to a team that isn't doing everything it can to ice a winner. Let's trade in our heritage jerseys for more time on the golf course, woodworking, sailing or whatever else you can spend your money on. Mediocrity is fine for the government and maybe Ottawa has gotten used to it on and off the ice.

I'm on that list. Spezza's back is too much of a risk. I would love to keep him on the team and watch him lead us to another cup run but realistically he probably doesn't have it in him. Focus on Ryan, trade Craig and Jason at the 2014-2015 deadline and go ALL IN for McDavid.

I watched 'The Human Scale', a documentary about urban planning, on Sunday. It explains that for the last 50 years, cities have been planned to accommodate automobile traffic. Ottawa is a perfect example. Even a downtown arena would not be walkable for most of the ticket buying population. Barrhaven, Orleans and Kanata would all still need to drive to the games. If the arena was to be put downtown, it would be in my opinion CRUCIAL that the LRT stopped at it and also could handle the capacity. Let's start a "Friends of the Senators" website to promote the relocation.. Lead the charge Nichols. Call up Bruce. Make it happen!

@Nichols6thSens @TrevorKlukeAgreed. You know I'm as skeptical as they come. I believe I told you a month ago that our forwards fall short in comparison to the rivals down the 401. Have the Senators EVER had a top line forward with the following characteristics:
-Point per game
-30 Goal scorer
-Grit
-Clutch

bonus
-Willing to fight

The only one that comes close is, you guessed it, Danny A (minus fighting). He's gone and the void remains. Karlsson, Spezza, and Ryan are amazing talents but I believe, at this moment, whether it is injury issues or experience, they are not suited to lead the team.

Nailed it. The city is a sprawling monster. I haven't looked it up but I'd guess Ottawa has the least amount of people per square km for any city over 700k people in the world.

Even if the arena was downtown I'd say at least 10k of the 19k fans would be driving to the game.

One more thing to consider is that the MTS Centre in he peg has a 15k capacity. Sellouts keep the demand high. When something is scarce the demand goes up, so law of human nature. I see it every year with the Bluejays for opening day. Everyone and their dog wants a ticket for that game when they hear it is sold out.

The Ryan trade is in the right direction and if they can pull off a couple more before losing Spezza and/or Ryan then they'll be close. Remember all of the teams that haven't won the cup and it will make our rebuild feel about as long as a minor penalty. E.I. Buffalo, Vancouver, Washington, St. Louis

The truth is Alfie got paid 4.875 mill per year for his 4 year deal, albeit front loaded 7/7/4.5/1. If Alfie had been paid 5 mill per year for 4 years, which I believe is a fair salary for those years, he would be at training camp in Ottawa in September. His front loaded contract is what started this mess.
Is he really worth 5.5 million to the Red Wings? I think they overpaid. To Ottawa you can justify the cost due to marketing upside. The team might not be better without him this year, but in the long run the team will start the post Alfie era a year earlier. That will probably be a good thing.
