This is getting to farcical levels. This team's management is way too loose-lipped , way too small town and way too focused on the short term that they'll never win a cup, not under Murrnyk anyway. It's getting really hard to stay loyal.

The comments below saying it's all good are proof that the Ottawa Senators fan inside the TSN1200 fishbowl haven't a clue. Take a look at the rosters of the teams that actually have a chance to win the cup. They are so far out of Ottawa's league I'd prefer the Sens be demoted to the AHL at this point. Take the blinders off people and realize you're starting to sound like naïveLeaf fans.

3 months, 3 weeks ago on Insider Trading Talks Hemsky
"As a mid-cap team with a strict internal budget" !?! Let's call a spade a spade. They're a bottom budget team, 26th overall in the NHL. They can't afford to spend on quality players and they can't draft high end prospects. The future looks bright...blinding.
@dzuunmod @TrevorKluke I strongly believe the Oilers will get it together in the very near future. The Islanders are run by a businessman with a puppet GM. The Panthers and Blue Jackets are terrible examples to support my theory, you're right.I never thought tanking this season was a good idea. But Gbaby has pointed out many times that if Ryan walks, that trade was basically a 2 year rental for a team that had no hope of winning the cup anyway, leaving the cupboard bare of 2 prospects.Hemsky and Spezza could be great, sure, but if you've read the last couple of articles by Graeme and Mendes, defensive breakdowns have cost this team WAY more than lack of goal scoring. When the game is on the line you need your best players on the ice. Spezza is not trusted to be out there. I'm not saying he isn't a great player but he's not a guy you depend on when the game is on the line.Expectations should be realistic. When the Sens were a cup favourite in the late 90s early 2000s they still couldn't get it done. It's the hardest trophy to win and to think that a team that takes as many penalties as the Sens do, gives up as many shots as the Sens do, and gives up the lead as many times as the Sens do is pipe dream. The Redblacks have a better chance of winning Lord Stanley next season.

"I doubt it’s ever going to happen, but they need him to play
harder. And when you see your leader not doing like the Jonathan Toews
or the Sidney Crosby, then you need something to change.”EXACTLY! The team needs a goddamn gamer. Most contenders have 2 or 3 of them. The Sens had 1 and he was thrown to the curb. After Saturday's loss I'm questioning my loyalty to this franchise. I can't take mediocrity anymore. I've said it on this blog time and time again, you need to be bad to be good. Floating around the playoff bubble does not work when you're a bottom budget team that depends on the draft. Anaheim trades away a perennial 30 goal scorer and they're going to fill the stable with another elite prospect, one that has time to develop while Getzlaf and Perry continue to carry the team. Look at all the teams that are challenging for the cup this year and they've all gone through a shitty stretch of seasons where they stockpiled elite prospects. If the Sens don't have a legitimate chance to draft McDavid, I'm done.
"He’s not doing himself, his assistant coaches or his organization any
favours by not offering any explanation for why or how this process came
unfolded."I have to disagree here bud. 1. If he was told to do this by someone up the food chain then he is doing himself a favour. By being a good soldier and not crying about it in the media he isn't putting his job security at risk.2. If upper management/ownership made the call then he's doing the team a favour by not letting doubt creep in to the dressing room about who actually makes decisions regarding coaching. 3. He also protects his boss and employer from being torn to pieces in the media, keeping any shred of respectability they have left..ahem..Mad Melnyk.Stick a fork in this team. They're DONE. And people think I'm negative. I'm a realist bud. A REALIST!

If the Sharks fail again this spring Doug Wilson could head north to the capital...no bloody chance. We are cursed to have ever gotten an NHL franchise in the capital. Players don't want to play here. Fans are fickle and the Bank is rarely sold out unless the Leafs or Habs are in town. If we had never become Sens fans we would have probably cheered for the Penguins, Red Wings or Avalanche, all power houses of the early and mid 90s. The joy of seeing our team hoist the cup would be memories of our youth and the future would look bright, blindingly in comparison to the mediocre . Now we have Melnyk's personal finances compounding the problems. Let's not be Leaf fans and stay loyal to a team that isn't doing everything it can to ice a winner. Let's trade in our heritage jerseys for more time on the golf course, woodworking, sailing or whatever else you can spend your money on. Mediocrity is fine for the government and maybe Ottawa has gotten used to it on and off the ice.

I watched 'The Human Scale', a documentary about urban planning, on Sunday. It explains that for the last 50 years, cities have been planned to accommodate automobile traffic. Ottawa is a perfect example. Even a downtown arena would not be walkable for most of the ticket buying population. Barrhaven, Orleans and Kanata would all still need to drive to the games. If the arena was to be put downtown, it would be in my opinion CRUCIAL that the LRT stopped at it and also could handle the capacity. Let's start a "Friends of the Senators" website to promote the relocation.. Lead the charge Nichols. Call up Bruce. Make it happen!

@Nichols6thSens @TrevorKlukeAgreed. You know I'm as skeptical as they come. I believe I told you a month ago that our forwards fall short in comparison to the rivals down the 401. Have the Senators EVER had a top line forward with the following characteristics:-Point per game-30 Goal scorer-Grit-Clutch
bonus -Willing to fightThe only one that comes close is, you guessed it, Danny A (minus fighting). He's gone and the void remains. Karlsson, Spezza, and Ryan are amazing talents but I believe, at this moment, whether it is injury issues or experience, they are not suited to lead the team.
"Every NHL organization has its own unmistakeable shortcomings or weaknesses."The true contenders though, have enough talent to make up for them.
Nailed it. The city is a sprawling monster. I haven't looked it up but I'd guess Ottawa has the least amount of people per square km for any city over 700k people in the world.
Even if the arena was downtown I'd say at least 10k of the 19k fans would be driving to the game.
One more thing to consider is that the MTS Centre in he peg has a 15k capacity. Sellouts keep the demand high. When something is scarce the demand goes up, so law of human nature. I see it every year with the Bluejays for opening day. Everyone and their dog wants a ticket for that game when they hear it is sold out.

The truth is Alfie got paid 4.875 mill per year for his 4 year deal, albeit front loaded 7/7/4.5/1. If Alfie had been paid 5 mill per year for 4 years, which I believe is a fair salary for those years, he would be at training camp in Ottawa in September. His front loaded contract is what started this mess. Is he really worth 5.5 million to the Red Wings? I think they overpaid. To Ottawa you can justify the cost due to marketing upside. The team might not be better without him this year, but in the long run the team will start the post Alfie era a year earlier. That will probably be a good thing.

Really tough call Nichols. I think you take Stone out. When the puck was in the Sens zone and #60 was on the ice, my nerves couldn't take it. I'm not saying he is a defensive liability but he might be more susceptible to the pressure. If Stone was higher on the depth chart than Butler all season, he should have been up with the Sens. Butler has the Calder Cup experience and hasn't really done anything to play himself out of the lineup.

If Shanahan had cajones and didn't work in the NHL office, he would have said "Hey listen bud, Brian Boyle punched Erik Karlsson in Game one 4 times in the head, albeit with his glove on, and he knew in the back of his mind that when Carkner was slotted in to the lineup that he would have to answer for it. The guy knows how to defend himself and didn't. If he had put his hands up, even with his gloves on, this would look a lot less sinister. The hits we're trying to remove from hockey, are hits to the head that are not defendable. When a player gets elbowed in the head the doesn't expect it to happen and rarely has a chance to defend himself. Boyle had time to react and defend himself because he fully expected Carkner was going to punch him when he told him at the face off 'I hope that doctor sister of yours is at the game tonight because you're going to need her services after I fuck up your face."

Could Murray be simply a great starter, giving the team 6-7 quality innings but if the Sens want to win it all, they'll need to bring in a stud closer? I don't know who that GM is but maybe once the team has established a strong core of NHL regulars an abundant crop of prospects, a new GM with better trading acumen comes in to get them over the hump? Like Brian Burke did in Anaheim. The Leafs are in the trouble they find themselves because Burke is a closer, a shrewd trader but piss poor at building a team from scratch. Paul Holmgren seems to be a master at trading players but there is no way he is coming to Ottawa. I like what Nichols said about the fans can't have it both ways. If we play hard and get some penalties during the regular season who cares? This is awesome man. I watched the Puck drop online nursing a hangover. One thing I'm a little, just a little disappointed in are the name and numbers. The typeface they chose says 90s college football more than heritage hockey. I do concede that it is 'classic' jersey type but don't believe it was around in 1920. I'll accept it and then ask, why do the numbers have a black and red stroke, yet the names are just white? They should be the same in my opinion. Otherwise the names just look like an after thought. Can't wait to see them in person though.
With all due respect I don't think I've ever said I want the kid in the lineup for a playoff push. The Oilers seemed to shit the bed pretty well with Hall, Eberle and Paarjarvi in the line up last season. What happens if he struggles next year? Oh, a year is burned off his ELC. He'll play "twice as much in Sweden'? They only play 55 games a year! If he plays 70 plus games in the NHL then he'll easily have more time on ice then he would in Sweden. Young players get better with experience, not age. Rundblad is the perfect example. Tore the Swedish Elite League up last season and looks like a new born giraffe on this side of the pond. Zibanejad looks like he's already played half a season. As for the Rebuild, ask anyone that knows me, including Nichols and Tim and they'll confirm I've been trying to get this team to blow it up since 2008. @pg

@Nichols6thSens@MelnyksHangovers@pg But what about his development? You're basically asking him to postpone his rookie season for little to no benefit. Is it no fair to say that if he scores 20 goals this year in the NHL he would score 20 goals as a rookie next year? So we might have to sign him in 2014 to a 6 year deal when he becomes an RFA. Would you rather have him put up 50 points in 2013 or 50 points in 2014? Regardless of when you start paying the kid, he'll be a rookie and produce rookie stats. Remember he could always go Luc Bourdon on us.
Josh Bailey put up 96 points playing with Taylor Hall. Scouts in the Islanders organization might have been a bit more shortsighted. @Nichols6thSens @pg
The other comfort is the expectations on the team and him are as low as they'll ever be. I don't care if he gets 3 goals or 30 (obviously better) as long as he learns what it will take to be an everyday player in the show. @MelnyksHangovers @pg

The sad thing about Ottawa fans (and our society in general) is that in order to act a certain way people need to hold hands and do things in a group. If fans were comfortable being loud and proud on their own, they wouldn't need to hide behind some name like the RSU. But people are not comfortable because they are afraid of acting the fool in the eyes of their peers. Our generation has to be the most insecure in history. @TrajanWolfe

Too simple? Are people that daft? No sense of design whatsoever. Simple is timeless, versatile and memorable. To all the critics, you must be the type that put racing decals on your 94 civic hatchback and wear an Affliction shirt under your suit jacket to 'spice' things up.
This is the first Senators jersey I would be proud to wear. The off-white is the key colour in the palette. It instantly conveys heritage and tradition. I suspect this will be on my and many others wishlists this holiday season.

It's hard at first to imagine Alfie in the HHOF. He has similar career numbers to Glenn Anderson. But Anderson kills him in playoff points and Stanley Cups. Forsberg has less career points but you got to admit he is has a higher reputation and the 2 cup rings don't hurt. Sundin has almost 300 more points than Alfie and seems to be in higher regard by his own country. Other guys that will get in from Alfie's era would be Niedermayer, Pronger, Jagr, Brodeur, Lidstrom, and some maybes like Selanne, Fleury, Fedorov, Lindros (lots of talk on this one), Brind'Amour, Pavel Bure and I'm sure other can think of more.

I remember reading some piece on the perennial losers, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The journo interviewed one of the oldest Pirates fans and asked him who he thought would win the world series that year and he answered "The Pirates obviously. You can't cheer for a team if you don't believe they're going to win."This has been a tough attitude to maintain for Sens fans since the cup run. I think during the late 90s and early millennium we all believed we were destined to win and it really hurt when we came up short (Following the 2003 loss to New Jersey the pain on my face must have been obvious because I was being asked by strangers at the Cabin if I was okay).
So if someone asks me before the start of the season who I think is going to win the Stanley Cup you know my answer: The Ottawa Senators. It might not happen, but I'm not going to let that stop me from cheering like I believe it will.

"With all the Swedes the Senators have in Daniel Alfredsson, Erik Karlsson, Robin Lehner, David Rundblad, Zibanejad, Sorensen ... don’t you also wish you could get the image of Brad Marchand using Daniel Sedin as a speed bag out of your head?"There is no point. Hopeless. Is there any other sport where the nationality of it's club players comes in to question as much as hockey?

@Don_inOakville @Nichols6thSens Before Brady and Lang I was listening to Andrew Krystal. 2 years was an exaggeration. i'd assume during the height of the battle of Ontario the Sens came up a lot more. @Nichols6thSens @Don_inOakville I listen to the fan 590 every morning. Only one mention of the Sens in my 2 years here. The truth is they have more to talk about than hockey and I've been quite surprised how little they talk about the leafs. And when they do, it is often harsh criticism. @Nichols6thSens Without looking them up, I don't know the assistant coaches of Boston, Vancouver or any other team other than Montreal. I'm not the most up to date and studied with this kind of thing but the Sens could have done a lot worse than Dave Cameron. Does anyone not think that this was discussed with MacLean when he was offered the job? Do you not think that Murray mentioned the possibility before MacLean accepted the offer?

@Nichols6thSens P.S. They're both east coast boys. So they can talk schooners and cod etc.
@Nichols6thSens I didn't know anything about Legault. Thanks for the correction. The reason I'm taking an optimistic approach on this one is because hockey is won on the ice by the players. Cameron seems more than capable of running a PK or PP. They aren't supposed to win for years anyway. We are so caught up in the minor details because the truth is we don't really have a legit contender. If this team was topping the power rankings to start the season, would we really give a damn who the assistant coach is? Did we all blame Perry Pearn when Martin couldn't get us over the hump?
Taking the high road on this one fellas.
The Sens now have an assistant coach that COULD be a head coach in the NHL. He doesn't have to face the media. He doesn't have the pressure on him to win games. If he gets along with MacLean then I don't see the big problem. Personally, I always want to work with good people and Dave Cameron seems to have a lot of people in his corner. AND the fact that Cameron is happy to take on an assistant role on a pretty shitty team is a good sign.I said it a few weeks ago that with Melnyk at the helm of this ship the team is headed for rocky shores. This is more of an optics problem than anything else. Legault needs to keep Melnyk's mouth shut, plain and simple.

It's interesting to me that if a player is more NHL ready at the same age as his peers he is considered to have reached his ceiling. I'm not a scout and haven't seen him play but why does Landeskog's ceiling project to be 9' and Nugent-Hopkins' cathedral? Is it a skating issue? Hands? Vision? What are people saying Landeskog lacks? Will Brad Marchand be a better NHL player at the end of both their respective careers?

@Nichols6thSens @Hajda I don't know what goes through a free agent's mind but I'm confident it isn't "If I sign with x team I will only be traded to a city that my wife likes." You treat your players like gold while they're in your organization but there is nothing indecent about trading them to better your hockey club. I'm even more pissed that a Sens fan would defend this decision. But seriously, isn't that the real problem? Most fans are just as guilty of the quick fix mentality as Melnyk and Murray. "He's really good in the community" has been used so many goddamn times you'd think the Senators were running for city council.

Really shaking my head here. This is why I find it hard to believe they'll win a cup under this regime. Trading a player for less than market value is just not acceptable. When I heard the Devils won the lottery but were unable to move up more than 4 spots I thought 'stupid rule'. But then when I heard that Edmonton would be picking first I really gave my head a shake. I motion that a team is not allowed to have the first overall pick two years in a row. When is the last time New Jersey had the first overall pick? They finally got it and it was taken away from them on a technicality. As for the Sens...this was a bigger blow to the morale than it was to the lineup. The player we get could be a Corey Perry (1R 28th) or a Zetterberg (210th overall). Management/The Euge will be eating their 'The first round pick will play next year' words. A return to the playoffs might happen next year but a cup contending team is very far away. Captain Kirk for coach.
3 years, 3 months ago on Why the Frown Bytown? (Drafting Drama Queens) | April
Many of you probably played sports growing up with an array of coaches. It is no secret that some coaches have a special way of inspiring players to perform to their true potential. Often that potential is beyond what even the players believe about themselves. The coaches that can do this have so many different gears. They know when to push, when to laugh and when to yell, rarely if at all. Clouston doesn't come across as a guy that connects with his players. The moment I lost all faith in the guy was when he told Karlsson that he was chosen to represent Ottawa at the All Star game. There was no rapport. It was like Papa Clouston was telling a whining child that he could get a toy after months of begging. I'm happy the coach killer gave him the axe. If Bylsma was voted the coach that most players want to play for then there is only one guy available that I see working out for the best in Ottawa. Kirk Muller is the man for the job.

@Mothballsuitor @Nichols6thSens Sorry I meant it is the biggest draft for the franchise. I don't know about the talent pool past the first round. I'd really like to hear some concrete scouting on Mark Stone because the kid is tearing it up and Wheat Kings fans say he dominates games.

@Nichols6thSens @Mothballsuitor How did Phillips manage a NMC? Was the Bryan in a position of weakness? Like did he need to sign him that badly that he gave him everything he wanted? Intangibles all you want, the guy only really elevates his play in the playoffs and the Sens won't be there anytime soon. What is he going to teach them? How to tip at Jask in the Centrum? As for the prospects. Completely agree that the Sens have to take the best player available. Gabriel is sitting at a mediocre 62 pts in 48 gp. I know points are not the be all end all but the Sens need a top tier talent, not another Mike Fisher. With no clear cut #1 fans will be divided over who to choose. The scouts will probably be divided. Bottom line: This draft is the biggest since Daigle and the next 10 years are dependent on it. Please BM, don't fuck it up.
@Nichols6thSens @dzuunmod @RyanH I think the biggest problem with the "clean" hits is the intent. I believe we're experiencing a result of the Rock 'EM Sock 'EM era. 'Checking' in hockey was NEVER intended to be 'hitting', was it? If a player has the puck and another player uses his body to knock the puck-carrier off the puck and gains control of it himself, then the check is what it was meant to be. Blind open ice, 3 feet from the boards and airborne attacks are what really piss me off and I think that a player should get a few fed to his face if the league doesn't want to take action. Why 'hit' someone if you or your team doesn't gain possession of the puck? The only reason I can conceive of is to injure or intimidate. Please help me if you know of another reason?

You know what's marketable? Landeskog and Nugent-Hopkins ripping other teams new arseholes... You trade Phillips for a first and package it with Nashville's first for another high first. @MelnyksHangovers @Nichols6thSens Half and half. I don't get to watch Sens games cause I live in Leaf country. Has Karlsson been that bad that he is regressing? Or is it more a case of taking for granted what he does well and putting his mistakes under the microscope. I fully admit that I have long been guilty of focusing on players mistakes and ignoring their upside, potential and talent.
3 years, 4 months ago on Assessing the Dead Deadline
@MelnyksHangovers @Nichols6thSens What are your criteria for improvement in play? I don't have the luxury of watching every game so an 82 game scouting report is out of my realm of possibilities. I'd be grateful if someone started a blog broke down every play Erik makes on every shift of every game so that we could really know if he is improving or not.

@MelnyksHangovers Seriously this is another example of a bleeding heart move. Every time the Sens win I'm cursing them. 3 years, 4 months ago on Learning Lessons But Which One? Phillips Re-Signs in Ottawa
Phillips can say publicly he wants to stay but if deep down he doesn't want to go to a team with a chance at the cup then I question his 'leadership'. At 32, the cup should be his first career priority. If he wants to stay and nurture the youth of tomorrow then retire and go coach in Smith Falls. Is it a NHL taboo to pull a Tkachuk ? I think that would be the best thing for the team and him. Go to Montreal or Boston and come back in the summer. I didn't know about his father but wouldn't his father want him to hoist the holy grail? Especially while he is still alive and can share the moment?

Dime a dozen. If the Sens can't find a replacement for Chris Kelly then we're in more trouble than anyone thought. It's not like we're losing Jordan Staal. Let Regin or Smith rot on the 3rd line. Our best players should be able to kill penalties, so I expect to see Cowen or Rundbland step up on the PK. My gut tells me Phillips gets traded but comes back in the summer for 1.5 per.

Things are heating up around here. Karlsson is not untouchable. Nichols is just showing that there could be deals out that there that would be worth considering. @CharlesC @SLC I too worry about how the fans will treat the fresh meat. Alexandre Daigle. Rookie Season 18 Years old: 20G 31A 51PTS. And that wasn't good enough. But even more than the fans, I worry about the atmosphere that the younger guys are coming into. There is no winning tradition. There are no strong leaders to set good examples. There is nobody that can stand up and say this is what it takes to win a cup. The Florida Panthers have been to a cup final for shat sakes.
There are the Buffalos, Canucks, Blues, Jets/Coyotes, Kings, and Capitals that have all been where we stand today and they are still searching for the giant champagne glass. I'm fine with looking at the Marshall, Muckler, and Murray era in the rear view mirror knowing that the road ahead is a bit bumpy because at least we're heading somewhere new and not just spinning the same '2007 Goodyear' tires.

@firmverm completely agree that this is comical nonsense: "He probably will be a better NHL player than an AHL player just because of his style and his body build right now."
This team can't afford to make the playoffs next year. 1 lottery pick does not a contender make. They need 2 or 3 top 5 picks to really rebuild. Landeskog, Couturier and Nugent-Hopkins are all gambles in their own right but thinking that AHL players drafted in the later rounds are going to come up and crack the top 10 in scoring is like playing 'pick a number' for money.
