This is getting to farcical levels. This team's management is way too loose-lipped , way too small town and way too focused on the short term that they'll never win a cup, not under Murrnyk anyway. It's getting really hard to stay loyal.

The comments below saying it's all good are proof that the Ottawa Senators fan inside the TSN1200 fishbowl haven't a clue. Take a look at the rosters of the teams that actually have a chance to win the cup. They are so far out of Ottawa's league I'd prefer the Sens be demoted to the AHL at this point. Take the blinders off people and realize you're starting to sound like naïveLeaf fans.

@dzuunmod @TrevorKluke I strongly believe the Oilers will get it together in the very near future. The Islanders are run by a businessman with a puppet GM. The Panthers and Blue Jackets are terrible examples to support my theory, you're right.

I never thought tanking this season was a good idea. But Gbaby has pointed out many times that if Ryan walks, that trade was basically a 2 year rental for a team that had no hope of winning the cup anyway, leaving the cupboard bare of 2 prospects.

Hemsky and Spezza could be great, sure, but if you've read the last couple of articles by Graeme and Mendes, defensive breakdowns have cost this team WAY more than lack of goal scoring. When the game is on the line you need your best players on the ice. Spezza is not trusted to be out there. I'm not saying he isn't a great player but he's not a guy you depend on when the game is on the line.

Expectations should be realistic. When the Sens were a cup favourite in the late 90s early 2000s they still couldn't get it done. It's the hardest trophy to win and to think that a team that takes as many penalties as the Sens do, gives up as many shots as the Sens do, and gives up the lead as many times as the Sens do is pipe dream. The Redblacks have a better chance of winning Lord Stanley next season.

EXACTLY! The team needs a goddamn gamer. Most contenders have 2 or 3 of them. The Sens had 1 and he was thrown to the curb.

After Saturday's loss I'm questioning my loyalty to this franchise. I can't take mediocrity anymore. I've said it on this blog time and time again, you need to be bad to be good. Floating around the playoff bubble does not work when you're a bottom budget team that depends on the draft. Anaheim trades away a perennial 30 goal scorer and they're going to fill the stable with another elite prospect, one that has time to develop while Getzlaf and Perry continue to carry the team. Look at all the teams that are challenging for the cup this year and they've all gone through a shitty stretch of seasons where they stockpiled elite prospects.

If the Sens don't have a legitimate chance to draft McDavid, I'm done.

I have to disagree here bud.
1. If he was told to do this by someone up the food chain then he is doing himself a favour. By being a good soldier and not crying about it in the media he isn't putting his job security at risk.
2. If upper management/ownership made the call then he's doing the team a favour by not letting doubt creep in to the dressing room about who actually makes decisions regarding coaching.
3. He also protects his boss and employer from being torn to pieces in the media, keeping any shred of respectability they have left..ahem..Mad Melnyk.

If the Sharks fail again this spring Doug Wilson could head north to the capital...no bloody chance.

We are cursed to have ever gotten an NHL franchise in the capital. Players don't want to play here. Fans are fickle and the Bank is rarely sold out unless the Leafs or Habs are in town. If we had never become Sens fans we would have probably cheered for the Penguins, Red Wings or Avalanche, all power houses of the early and mid 90s. The joy of seeing our team hoist the cup would be memories of our youth and the future would look bright, blindingly in comparison to the mediocre .

Now we have Melnyk's personal finances compounding the problems. Let's not be Leaf fans and stay loyal to a team that isn't doing everything it can to ice a winner. Let's trade in our heritage jerseys for more time on the golf course, woodworking, sailing or whatever else you can spend your money on. Mediocrity is fine for the government and maybe Ottawa has gotten used to it on and off the ice.

I watched 'The Human Scale', a documentary about urban planning, on Sunday. It explains that for the last 50 years, cities have been planned to accommodate automobile traffic. Ottawa is a perfect example. Even a downtown arena would not be walkable for most of the ticket buying population. Barrhaven, Orleans and Kanata would all still need to drive to the games. If the arena was to be put downtown, it would be in my opinion CRUCIAL that the LRT stopped at it and also could handle the capacity. -Point per game

-Clutch

bonus
-Willing to fight

The only one that comes close is, you guessed it, Danny A (minus fighting). He's gone and the void remains. Karlsson, Spezza, and Ryan are amazing talents but I believe, at this moment, whether it is injury issues or experience, they are not suited to lead the team.

Even if the arena was downtown I'd say at least 10k of the 19k fans would be driving to the game.

One more thing to consider is that the MTS Centre in he peg has a 15k capacity. Sellouts keep the demand high. When something is scarce the demand goes up, so law of human nature. I see it every year with the Bluejays for opening day. Everyone and their dog wants a ticket for that game when they hear it is sold out.

His front loaded contract is what started this mess.
Is he really worth 5.5 million to the Red Wings? I think they overpaid. To Ottawa you can justify the cost due to marketing upside. The team might not be better without him this year, but in the long run the team will start the post Alfie era a year earlier. That will probably be a good thing.

The guy knows how to defend himself and didn't. If he had put his hands up, even with his gloves on, this would look a lot less sinister. The hits we're trying to remove from hockey, are hits to the head that are not defendable. When a player gets elbowed in the head the doesn't expect it to happen and rarely has a chance to defend himself. Boyle had time to react and defend himself because he fully expected Carkner was going to punch him when he told him at the face off 'I hope that doctor sister of yours is at the game tonight because you're going to need her services after I fuck up your face."

With all due respect I don't think I've ever said I want the kid in the lineup for a playoff push. He'll play "twice as much in Sweden'? They only play 55 games a year! If he plays 70 plus games in the NHL then he'll easily have more time on ice then he would in Sweden. Young players get better with experience, not age. Rundblad is the perfect example. Tore the Swedish Elite League up last season and looks like a new born giraffe on this side of the pond. @MelnyksHangovers@fmblair@Nichols6thSens The name Zibanejad is Canadian as much as it is Swedish. The only reason this is even a debate is that fact that you KNOW where a player is from. If a player's nationality was kept secret, no one would be able to name all the Canadians based solely on their play.

I was at the Leafs vs. Sens Rookie game and the Blue team has very little in the cupboard. They are tough though. I really liked the idea of a booster/supporter group but when I looked into it further and found out that you had to PAY to join, I was completely turned off. I realize you get an exclusive scarf but I think that breeds elitism just like Tim condemned. The sad thing about Ottawa fans (and our society in general) is that in order to act a certain way people need to hold hands and do things in a group. If fans were comfortable being loud and proud on their own, they wouldn't need to hide behind some name like the RSU. But people are not comfortable because they are afraid of acting the fool in the eyes of their peers. Our generation has to be the most insecure in history. @TrajanWolfe

It's hard at first to imagine Alfie in the HHOF. He has similar career numbers to Glenn Anderson. But Anderson kills him in playoff points and Stanley Cups. Forsberg has less career points but you got to admit he is has a higher reputation and the 2 cup rings don't hurt. Sundin has almost 300 more points than Alfie and seems to be in higher regard by his own country. Other guys that will get in from Alfie's era would be Niedermayer, Pronger, Jagr, Brodeur, Lidstrom, and some maybes like Selanne, Fleury, Fedorov, Lindros (lots of talk on this one), Brind'Amour, Pavel Bure and I'm sure other can think of more.

I remember reading some piece on the perennial losers, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The journo interviewed one of the oldest Pirates fans and asked him who he thought would win the world series that year and he answered "The Pirates obviously. You can't cheer for a team if you don't believe they're going to win."This has been a tough attitude to maintain for Sens fans since the cup run. I think during the late 90s and early millennium we all believed we were destined to win and it really hurt when we came up short (Following the 2003 loss to New Jersey the pain on my face must have been obvious because I was being asked by strangers at the Cabin if I was okay).

So if someone asks me before the start of the season who I think is going to win the Stanley Cup you know my answer: The Ottawa Senators. It might not happen, but I'm not going to let that stop me from cheering like I believe it will.

@Nichols6thSens I didn't know anything about Legault. Thanks for the correction. The reason I'm taking an optimistic approach on this one is because hockey is won on the ice by the players. Cameron seems more than capable of running a PK or PP. They aren't supposed to win for years anyway. We are so caught up in the minor details because the truth is we don't really have a legit contender. If this team was topping the power rankings to start the season, would we really give a damn who the assistant coach is? Did we all blame Perry Pearn when Martin couldn't get us over the hump?

Taking the high road on this one fellas.

The Sens now have an assistant coach that COULD be a head coach in the NHL. He doesn't have to face the media. He doesn't have the pressure on him to win games. If he gets along with MacLean then I don't see the big problem. Personally, I always want to work with good people and Dave Cameron seems to have a lot of people in his corner. AND the fact that Cameron is happy to take on an assistant role on a pretty shitty team is a good sign.I said it a few weeks ago that with Melnyk at the helm of this ship the team is headed for rocky shores. This is more of an optics problem than anything else. Legault needs to keep Melnyk's mouth shut, plain and simple.

I motion that a team is not allowed to have the first overall pick two years in a row. When is the last time New Jersey had the first overall pick? They finally got it and it was taken away from them on a technicality. As for the Sens...this was a bigger blow to the morale than it was to the lineup. The player we get could be a Corey Perry (1R 28th) or a Zetterberg (210th overall). Management/The Euge will be eating their 'The first round pick will play next year' words. A return to the playoffs might happen next year but a cup contending team is very far away. Captain Kirk for coach.

Many of you probably played sports growing up with an array of coaches. It is no secret that some coaches have a special way of inspiring players to perform to their true potential. Often that potential is beyond what even the players believe about themselves. The coaches that can do this have so many different gears. They know when to push, when to laugh and when to yell, rarely if at all. Clouston doesn't come across as a guy that connects with his players. The moment I lost all faith in the guy was when he told Karlsson that he was chosen to represent Ottawa at the All Star game. There was no rapport. It was like Papa Clouston was telling a whining child that he could get a toy after months of begging. I'm happy the coach killer gave him the axe. If Bylsma was voted the coach that most players want to play for then there is only one guy available that I see working out for the best in Ottawa. Kirk Muller is the man for the job.

As for the prospects. Completely agree that the Sens have to take the best player available. Gabriel is sitting at a mediocre 62 pts in 48 gp. I know points are not the be all end all but the Sens need a top tier talent, not another Mike Fisher. With no clear cut #1 fans will be divided over who to choose. @Nichols6thSens @dzuunmod @RyanH I think the biggest problem with the "clean" hits is the intent. I believe we're experiencing a result of the Rock 'EM Sock 'EM era. 'Checking' in hockey was NEVER intended to be 'hitting', was it? If a player has the puck and another player uses his body to knock the puck-carrier off the puck and gains control of it himself, then the check is what it was meant to be. Blind open ice, 3 feet from the boards and airborne attacks are what really piss me off and I think that a player should get a few fed to his face if the league doesn't want to take action. Why 'hit' someone if you or your team doesn't gain possession of the puck? The only reason I can conceive of is to injure or intimidate. Please help me if you know of another reason?

Phillips can say publicly he wants to stay but if deep down he doesn't want to go to a team with a chance at the cup then I question his 'leadership'. At 32, the cup should be his first career priority. If he wants to stay and nurture the youth of tomorrow then retire and go coach in Smith Falls. Is it a NHL taboo to pull a Tkachuk ? I think that would be the best thing for the team and him. Go to Montreal or Boston and come back in the summer. This team can't afford to make the playoffs next year. 1 lottery pick does not a contender make. They need 2 or 3 top 5 picks to really rebuild. Landeskog, Couturier and Nugent-Hopkins are all gambles in their own right but thinking that AHL players drafted in the later rounds are going to come up and crack the top 10 in scoring is like playing 'pick a number' for money.
