Re: the Karlsson not being elite thing, I think it's the, "JUST not", vs "not JUST" causing the problem.

On another note...

I usually listen to all the interviews, but a few months ago, I realised that you never miss anything important. I never have to listen to the entire interview because you've cut out all the unnecessary cliches, non-revealing generic rambling and patronizing sports sloganeering.  I've never found ANYTHING interesting that was in the interview, but not in your blog post.

So, just wanted to say thanks for filtering out all the unnecessary bits.  Very well done and much appreciated.  Now I just need to find someone who can do the same thing with politics.

Didn't bode well that he used the term ballpark ('not-in-the-same') when talking about Methot.

Hard to imagine us needing a top 9 forward.  A top 6 one, for sure, but don't we already have a glut of 3rd/4th liners?  I feel like I'm missing something.

And oh, thanks for the shirt design - my bro's gonna love his CPP shirt.  Buckle your seatbelt!

Simply amazing write-up!  Should be mandatory reading for the organization.  Cathartic, depressing. I laughed and cried.

I want Ryan back though (high-ceiling, top-line talent we lack).  Maybe I'm just not ready to deal with the possibility that that trade wasn't shrewd management.  I mean, we could've traded Anderson at his peak, been 'stuck' with the return and a Bishop/Lehner tandem and... uh...

Was wondering why he just wouldn't say "Of course" to the jersey retirement question as well.

Really don't like his last answer, which sounds like a resounding 'no' shrouded in "yes, but only if it's an absolutely ideal situation".  Sounds like he said 'dollar in, dollar out', then tried to placate the increasingly expectant and angry fanbase.

Trade clause or not, even if the myriad of other factors worked (budget, desirability of our assets, no #1 pick, budget...) in our favour, I just can't see the guy using a stack of $100s as a cell phone in a Vegas penthouse ending up in Ottawa.

But yeah... I don't think there's anything not to like about Kane, except for what we'd have to give up to get him.

Also, I'd imagine approximately 26-28 other teams would be interested in him.

I hear a lot of fans complaining about league bias against us, and I know that's bullshit, but they have a point.  Rule 48 states: A hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted.

The thing I don't get is that Shanahan explicitly states that Gryba stepped up to deliver a clean hit (ie there was no intent to target Eller's head).

It looks to me like Shanahan has full discretion in deciding how the rule is interpreted.  Seems he doesn't have to follow the language of the rule.

I still fell like the injury/blood are the only things that caused the actual suspension.  Had Eller got right up and not been bleeding, there would have been no penalty.

Also, it's hard to argue with picking up a 23 year old who instantly becomes your leading scorer.

1 year, 6 months ago on Breaking: Ben Bishop Traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning

I could see Bishop getting better and possibly even becoming an elite goalie (26 is still pretty young for a tender and his NHL career is just starting).

I've heard a lot of good things about Conacher.  A quick playmaker who will go into dirty areas with Loewenesque tenacity. I've heard he's somewhat of a liability defensively, but if that's true, I'd imagine MacLean will sort that out.

Happy to get a young player who can help us a little now and maybe a lot later.  Even more happy we now have a player whose name rhymes with gory...story, allegory and Montessori!

Just wanted to echo some of the sentiments in the comments section.  This is easily the best Sens-related site on the web.  It's uncommon to find anything but platitudes and meaningless clichés, let alone something unique, interesting and humorous.

Congrats and thanks!

The mere possibility of Stone, Zibanejad or Silfverberg joining the Sens is exciting/gratuitous for fans, but I have to wonder if dressing Klinkhammer for game 2 would have been the way to go.

We really got pushed around and Klinkhammer has showed that he can play in the NHL.  He hits hard and often, and you can put him in the lineup without sacrificing any speed (perhaps gaining some).

Thoughts on Colonel Klink?

What is this, the most boring interview ever?  I know hockey players generally give bland responses to most questions, but there isn't even a single interesting tidbit to redeem this interview.

Play a full 60 minutes, one shift at a time, leave it all out on the ice, work hard, play well in all 3 zones, give 110%, push the envelope, blah blah blah...

2 years, 8 months ago on Bryan Murray Talks Nash and Trading Kuba on Fan 590 | February

If we don't get rid of Kuba and/or Gonchar, we'll probably regret it. They both had horrible seasons last year and have rebounded (Gonchar to an extent and Kuba fully) to regain at least some trade value.

Holding on to them just to get beat out in the first, perhaps second round will inevitably seem stupid in retrospect. I'm not saying it's smart to heap minutes on Brian Lee or throw Cowen into the fire, but I DO think it's marginally less stupid to stick to our original plan and convert one or both of them into draft picks while we can.

Right now, I get the feeling Murray does not feel this way. He's clearly indicated he would bring in help at the right price to give his veterans a better shot, so I don't see how he could go in the opposite direction and dump a steady blueliner like Kuba. I imagine he'd be the kind of player we'd be looking for if we didn't already have him.

The thing I don't get is the elbow to the head. You can't "brace" for a hit by putting out your elbow. You also don't have to be "dirty" or "sneaky" to make a horribly wrong split-second decision, which is what I believe Wolski did.

The onus HAS to be on Wolski to brace for a hit with his elbow down. It should be like a high stick; skate around with your stick in the air and it's legal until you hit someone in the face. Pretty sure I was taught never to take a hit by putting up your elbow, stick or fists when I was a kid.

What's the 6th Sens take on Brian Lee? Am I wrong to think he doesn't deserve to sit? He used to suck, then received a prolonged ride in the press box. He came back looking mature, strong and positionally superb.

With the need to showcase veteran D for trade value and simultaneously make room for young D in our lineup, is Lee trade bait? Seems like it would be better for Lee's development to be traded, but given that he's not playing, I find it hard to believe we'd get full value for him He's just becoming solid after all these years.

Do I hold Lee in too high esteem?

Not sure I understand why Cowen and Rundblad are in 'prospect purgatory'. First of all, the Vatican got rid of purgatory and all its incarnations a few years back. More importantly, Cowen was pretty close last year and Cowen/Rundblad seem like virtual locks to make the Sens, judging from their performances and EVERYTHING management has said about them.

If it's a question of finding room on our blueline, there are several ways it can be done, so I'm not worried.

Also, it should be noted that there are always a couple of exceptions to the "don't rush your prospects" rule. Some kids just play well with the big boys. We can never know for CERTAIN, but my guess is Skinner & Karlsson, for instance, greatly benefited from being "rushed"

Sorry to be such a prudish curmudgeon - I think your site is tops for Sens analysis. Good to see an amateur sports writer that actually know how to WRITE, not just about sports (I like not having to sacrifice one for the other). AGain, sorry for being a long-winded ass, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
