i read it was a 2 year deal.  i thought it was an entry level contract and therefore 3 years.  did one year "burn" because he refused to sign in CHI and become an UFA?

can anyone shed some light on this?

@ATCRyan i think not.  coming back from a broken jaw has NOTHING to do with how shitty step's release is.  i'm a big stepan fan but hey... his release is more in the girardi camp than it is in the gabby camp.

@GiveGartneraCup @IcyCup yup.  i was under the false impression that he would be an UFA after this contract.  if he was to be an UFA after next season i assume he would play his ass off:  fun to watch when an athlete grabs these opportunities and also good for the team.  that being said, he still has to play for the next contract and therefore i hope he has an eye opening 2014-2015 season.

i want to see this kid do well.  he is not a complete player but IMHO i think he has "it".  interesting to see that he is still a RFA after this contract is up after next season.

i hope he plays for hard for the team, contract negotiations, whatever...  i hope he is training his balls off as we speak.  i want to see this kid do well.

@ivanricov i predict world peace before that happens.  he proved himself over and over again of not being able to learn.  even sam and joe were talking about that at one point.  they said he couldnt bring the lessons in practice to the ice, in games.  that's a shame.  maybe he turns it around.

it is just so so cool of MZA to reach out to fans when he doesnt have to.  like ive said here before, the guy is authentic.  a lot of if not most athletes hold fans away at an arms distance (which is their prerogative of course).  this just makes MZA cooler.  you can tell he clearly wants to play for this team and cant wait to get back at it.  to have THAT in the locker room can do a lot of good for a team.

MDZ?  no.  if the islanders blow him off, it is off to the KHL where you bring your own toilet seats from arena to arena (thats documented) and the defibs on location dont have charged batteries in them (sadly, also documented).  so, no.

i get where youre coming from but you have to look towards the future and what this deal means going forward beyond next season.  consider his age and how he is trending.

@gravey94 yeah and i think an issue is lack of top centers.  and consider his age and the obvious, OBVIOUS edge this team has in coaching.

@ivanricov in the best case scenario he can view this contract as a stepping stone if he takes into consideration the opportunity that it represents.

at first, one gets sticker shock.  but his age i think brings it back to the middle as it were. also, i dont think that we have seen him peak yet.  im stating a lot of obvious shit here.  my point:  if you get sticker shock looking at the surface of this deal, it dissipates quickly.

glad he's onboard and cant wait to see him really bloom.
