One part of being behind is personnel. UGA has resisted the staff expansion that many other schools have embraced.

The problem is that they are not taking enough OL - thus not offering enough.

From Quincy Vasser's hometown paper:

After graduating Nyack in 2012, Vasser had not qualified to play college football. He attended Hargrave Military Academy, a Virginia prep school that produced numerous Division I players, including current Bulldogs John Atkins and Leonard Floyd, both of whom are defensive linemen like Vasser.

"They told me to come down there and get in the rotation," Vasser said. "Why not take an opportunity to play with two of my boys at Georgia?"

Vasser received multiple Division I offers after the one season at Hargrave, but he still had not met the required standardized test scores to qualify. He said he is now on track to graduate from Navarro in December.

His commitment to Georgia sparked interest from several other schools, including Alabama, which he said will visit him at Navarro in May. He also received an offer from Maryland and interest from Pitt, Ole Miss, Florida State and Illinois.

Vasser intends to make his official visit to Georgia the first week in June. He will still have two years of eligibility plus a redshirt season (if necessary).

Vasser had 4½ sacks last fall for Navarro, which finished 9-3 and ranked No. 12 in the country. He earned honorable-mention All-Southwest Junior College Football Conference honors.

@EdThomas  My guess is that it is a reflection of greater resources being applied to the recruiting effort. Note that one of the LA recruits under consideration (but not yet offered) is currently committed to Arizona.

@DrTiki They need spending money for the same reasons that your kids need (or will need) cash. How about gas, laundry, clothing, pizza on Saturday night, a movie, a date, bus fare, phone bill...

They should be able to profit from their likenesses, However, only a few will be able to do so.

There is nothing new about providing cash to players. All through the 50's and 60's player received "laundry money" from the schools. As I remember it was around $50/mo. Adjusted for inflation, that would be a good starting point.

@SonofHenry  @Red Dawn  The problem with this discussion is that there is no objective valuation for the education. One might say it is worth what non-scholarship students pay for it but it that actually true? If my goal for attending college is to give myself a shot at the NFL or the NBA then the value I place on the education is different.

The good @DrTiki (above) refers to what SA's are "given". However, I expect that few SA's see their scholly benefits as a gift.

At any rate, the time for greater compensaton of SA's is here. It is going to happen. There will be other, non-cash, benefits also.

The irony is that all of this drama and enrichment of lawyers could have been prevented by an NCAA with the slightest foresight.

@Red Dawn  The stipends are coming. Although it will be called full cost of attendance. FCA will be better for the SA's because adjusting it as time goes on will not be strictly seen as a cash raise.

There was some discussion below of the now mandatory S&C sessions for the team this summer. Many media outlets framed their reporting to leave the impression that CMR was turning over a new leaf by requiring S&C this year while making it voluntary in the past.

Actually, a new NCAA rule interpretation allows mandatory S&C this year. In this past that would have been a violation.

@JaxDawg  I think it's funny that your comment suggests that elite players would be scared off by this guyand @SonofHenry  just above suggests it is a wasted scholly. I don't know if either is right but the wide divergence of opinion is interesting.
