@BigPen596 @Bing_87 @Who Really Cares  I disagree but only by degrees - Phlyer fans are really the worst.  Plus the Phlyers knocked Mario out of his first playoffs in the 88-89 season AND in his first retirement season in 96-97.  Not to mention the 0-42-3 record in the Spectrum from 1982-1989 (I think). And 2000 with Keith Primeau in 5OT (which meant back to back OT losses in a series the Pens led 2-0 AFTER TAKING TWO IN PHILLY but went on to lose in six).  And 2012.  And Claude Giroux, Hartnell, Rinaldo, etc.  I don't like hating (karma and all) but man it is sweet when the Phlyers don't make the playoffs or go out...

In the NHL timing is EVERYTHING. Down by a goal in the third, a Pens player would have to be knifed at center ice to draw a penalty. Refs don't want to "influence the outcome of the game" after all!

Been like this for 20 years (I will hate hate HATE the Devils until I die for foisting this on the world). Only way they could keep up with those early 1990s Penguins teams. The 1992-93 team scored five or more goals in THIRTY-FOUR games that year, and the scored four goals in a shit-ton more. They AVERAGED almost 4.4 goals per game. The Islanders showed the way to beat such a team (and it took an OT game 7 and the end of Kevin Stevens' career to win it) and the Devils perfected it.

My late father always said if you injury a player while committing a penalty, you should be out as long as the injured player is - even if you ended his career.

This. Someone (NHL Network I think) actually blamed Crosby and said given the Rags setup on the ice he should have had Broussard. Hell of a turrible rebound for Fleury to give up tho

This is the worst rule ever! CONTROL YOUR STICK! Who needs to follow through above shoulder level? Stupid stupid stupid rule and that's even with it occasionally benefitting the Pens.

Just gotta say I love the playoffs - not a shitty game to be found (minus Pens losses of course) and I am flipping between second period of Wild-Blues and Ducks-Jets just getting ready to drop! Woooooo

BTW the penalty on Chorney had to have him thinking "Holy shite is Glass slow - a real NHL player would have reached that puck no problem!"

I remember that Jagr game - we were heading east on the Turnpike and I was afraid of losing the Pens Radio Network so we pulled over near Somerset with ten minutes left in the game. When Jagr scored the tying goal we celebrated but were still tight. When he got the winner we jumped out of the car and capered like fools screaming at the top of our lungs. Good times and damn but Straka was great as long as he was healthy (not often)

I blame the Kevin Stevens face plant gif for this loss. Best team in franchise history but never the same after that hit. Surprised you didn't include 1975 or 1982. What a terrible season this turned out to be.

Not saying it is anywhere near the same but a good example of not giving up too soon on a struggling young player.

@Who Really Cares  Almost felt like a 1988-1989 or 1992-1993 game!  I went back and looked and one of those years (I think 1988-1989 when Lemieux exploded) and the Penguins had something stoopid like 25 games where they scored five of more goals...

@LoranMannIsTheMan @PenGeno @dvo Gotta get them at 2:15 a.m. after a hard night of getting ripped.  Preferably in the Strip District location but Oakland can suffice if you are in that part of the city at that time.  Otherwise...  meh.  Still better than many other concession offerings at the three parks in the Burgh tho.

Although I do have to say that a lot of times you EARN penalties through hard sustained work in the offensive zone and there wasn't a whole lot of that either night.

Lots of slashing all over the ice by the Isles and no calls. Very strange. But they definitely wanted these games more - they were flying and we (especially Sid) looked flat

Terrible no call on the Malkin hit - should have been interference if nothing else. Puck was nowhere near him. Guess the NHL doesn't give a damn about protecting their best players. Say what you want about the NFL, but at least they seem to recognize that QBs are the stars and are trying to protect them...

Seems like this franchise has a long history of tough physical issues - Briere, Mario's Hodgkins and back issues, Sid's concussion, Vokoun, Maata and now this. Hope Pascal gets well and lives a long and fruitful life after this...

I wonder if anyone ever goes back and runs advanced numbers on prior seasons? I would love to see this compared to, say, the 1992-93 Pens team that scored almost 100 more goals than they gave up, won the President's Trophy and finished with a .708 "points %" (I know, David Volek and game 7 but still...) Or 88-89 when Mario scored 199 points with Rob Brown and a collection of left wingers. (Errey? Stevens?Cunneyworth?)

If they finish out of the playoffs this year, I think they will look back at the past couple of weeks and the four or five games they had under control but let slip away as the difference (although it is tough to highlight only one stretch of losses as the particular reason...)

Only silver lining this year was watching them lay maybe a bigger egg than the Guins this year (up 3-2 after 5 and losing games 6 and 7). In Staal's defense (did I really just type that???) on this play I think his initial intent was to slash Crosby's stick and when Crosby fell he hit 'im in the noggin. So still a penalty but a tiny amount less of a douchebag move. I have been amazed for going on 30 years now at how much the refs let opponents get away with on the Lemieux-Jagr-Crosby-Malkin's of the world (see 1996 Florida Panthers). It's almost like they hate them for being so much more talented than the average NHL'er...

Not sure how I feel about it but Adams is not going anywhere unless he gets hurt. Veteran leadership Cup winner smarts 4th line/PK specialist etc etc etc. Comventional wisdom says he plays and no coach ever got fired for doing what CW says to do. There isn't anyone clearly better than him although a Gibbons-Vitale-Megna fourth line might at least make the Rahgs sweat with their speed and jump.
