with the guy playing second D pairing minutes I don't see how we can pay him over 3mil..there are options out there that could come cheep..Joni Pitkanen I always liked, Kyle Quincey, derek Morris, Mike Weaver, heck Willie Mitchell also .. there are options out there that can replace stralman in the 3 mil per range.. no need to offer more then 4 years 3.5 per..Id rather make Boyle and Moore a priority and try and bring in some Offensive help.

I have maintained since about mid season that despite the contract, (and maybe this post is irrelevant here) Richards has a ton of value to this team. Cannot see the Rangers buying him out.. I just can`t and to be honest, I hope they don`t .. I know the contract is huge and about 100 of you will reply to this post and probably call me stupid for saying so but I really feel he belongs on this team.

Just for the sake of arguing, as I agree Richards needs to go, what if he regains his 2004 playoff form and the rangers make a serious run for the cup??? What then? Still buy him out!?

Will Richards truly be bought out? I'm not so sure, I really have felt he has been a real solid piece this season. I know it is more about the long term but I am not sure a buyout is in the cards anymore. You absolutely need veteran leadership on a team and with the amount of 4-5 million$ contracts being handed out to guys who score less than 50 pts a season, I'm not sure if buyouts like this will be such a fad.. Plus what does buying out Richards send as a message to future UFAs who might want to sign in NYC?? Might

Sorry to disagree with most of you but here are the facts, Burrows is a classless asshole who laid a violent (legal) hit on McD out of frustration.  some would see the Rangers getting fired up possibly Girardi dropping the gloves (maybe getting his ass handed to him breaking a hand etc.. on top of that the Rangers end up with a penaty down 6 on 4 with a faceoff in their zone two top defenders out of the game, Kesler has dominated on faceoffs and the anucks are desperate and would probably be fired up with momentum from the crowd, possibly score in the first 10 seconds then we have to go into protect the lead mode (we all saw agains the blackhawks in Feb that is is possible to get a quality scoring chance with 11 seconds left, let alone 39).. Is that what we prefer?

Im a Canadian boy and grew up playing hockey and fighting ans physical play have always been in my blood and I love it, however this team won the game, were on the road, ended up with 2 points and didnt risk Lundy getting involved or force him to play another 49 seconds with 3 guys swarming him.. This team did the right thing by not responding. They will make the playoffs and they didnt even play into Tort's shananigans (believe me he wanted somone torun McDP) and they added insult to injury by solidifying their position in 2cnd and bitch slapping the nucks into no playoff territory.. So please shut up with the lack of a response.. especially since there actually was a scrum it was simply a small one and was quickly broken up..

Class goes further than you think in this league and I am happy to say my team and coach have it.. otherwise go be a fuckin Flyers fan, you'll get your response along with a first round exit and another failed season!

@TruBluEsp THATS IT ..I am sure cooler heads will prevail and the `fire Sather crew will realize Del Z was a disaster in this system and noone was gonna give us bluechip prospects or top tier Defense. at 2.5 million Del zotto is a bad bargain and as an RFA in this day and age, he is looking at at least a 4-4.5 million salary to play on our 3rd pair.. so it was a good deal and one that added an element we have all complained about since the Prust days.

from the hockey news:

Scouting Report Assets: Blocks shots with aplomb and can play a shutdown role, if needed. Is mobile and can move the puck up ice. Is also a solid contributor on special teams. Owns a good-sized frame. Flaws: Doesn't use his size with enough consistency, so as to gain an advantage against NHL forwards. Is inconsistent in terms of point production and offensive impact on a game, as well.

Career Potential: Solid, versatile but inconsistent defenseman.

@mando24179for one your vocabulary is quite ridiculous, considering we are reading this and AV is not, second,If you feel that AV has been the problem here then you are blind. His system, when followed, is the way we all wanted the Rangers to play !! following the brutal initial road trip the Rangers were healthy, they were moving the puck, they were outshooting their oponents, their powerplay was click and all looked great. just because of a recent 5-6 game stretch of lackluster play, you want to fire the coach.. wake up bro.. hockey season has 82 games.. the Kings of 3 years ago were in 9th position by this time and turned it around.. the players who need to be good have not been, that is on the players not the coach..relax a little have a drink and quit talking like a dock worker!!

WITHOUT a full lineup and a Marquee franchise player.. adding Nash to that lineup has a huge trickle down effect.. that being said so too would adding a big time goalscorer or a really strong shot from the point (been wishing fo rhtat for years) PK Subban would be nice!!!

A guy like Versteeg or Boyes if the price is not too high is totally worth getting rid of dead weight like Pyatt.. this team is far from needing a complete rebuild, anyone who believes that after such a small sample size has not been watching hockey very long.. they are 2-5  that is not that bad!! a couple wins in a row or a roll of 7 of 10 and they are already over .500 with an 8th of the season gone. once the regulars (all top 6 forwards) come back and the systems are covered in depth and we can play a game where we get last change and some fan support, we will be just fine..

If STepan is holding out he is doing so because he wants to get paid now whereas he should have to put in a full season lik ehe did at least to deserve it. Subban did the same last year and eventually signed a deal that was even less then Kadri's deal and he went on to win the Norris and will definetly get what he deserves in his next negotiation. I think that (and I have bee. mong the ultra pissed off and annoyed over this teams' play) that we are forgetting that Staal is a major piece missing. Add that all the games missed by Richards, Girardi, Callahan, Nash, Del zotto, Asham and Mcdonough and (without playing the blame game) has really hurt this teams' record. I think that with a healthy lineup this team is extremely hard to beat.. Beside Pittsburgh and a bandful of losses to inferior teams that Id take my chances with in a 7 game series, this team can be very good. All that being said a winni g streak on 5 games could leap us into 5th before we know it so there still is time to work shit out ..I think priority number one is a defenseman with a bi shot who can quarterback the powerplay gonly had 3 or 4 in the last few games , see Chicago, montreal Pittsburgh , Anaheim they all have dmen who score !!

I have argued so many times that Avery is a liability ..I mean common the guy supports gay marriage an act that if done by Johnny depp would be considered noble and modern, and he still takes flak. Noone likes this guy (although there are so many other players that the league could hate on for their on ice actions * Matt Cooke)

http://www.tolensky.com/2011/03/matt-cooke-history-of-violence.html

SOmetimes the best thing a team can do is get rid of an unwanted distraction. I think the Rangers should cut ties with Avery simply because I want the team to reshape their reputation and image around the league to a tough hard nosed team to play against that are respected for their skill. when Prust came over I thought Avery was replaced. the difference between Prust and Avery is simple, one is a hard working grinder/agitatotor who is not afraid of anyone and who works his tail off the other is all of the above but with a reputaton that makes all of it completely useless.

Sorry Avery but you gotta go

I think we come from two different places. I cant go anywhere or hang out with any of my buddies of family memebers without hockey coming up. we teas each other and smack talk every chance I get . Im a rangers fans my older borther is a Blackhawks fan (although the rangers never play them) and Im surounded by Habs fans who live here permanantly and Leafs fans who come from Ontario to my university to study , needless to say hockey is a major topic of conversation and smack talk is a religion here. uprooting tradition simply would anger a lot more people than you might think.. casual hockey fans are cool in their own right but will never dictate the direction of the league because they want diversity.. either way good post, well written and thought out .. my opinion is it is far from what WILL happen but hey props on offering up an opinion..

@SirKengin I see how you may have come to the conclusion and it seems to make some sense on a practical level but you have to start thinkin in terms of dollars rather than attempt to save an extra 120 mins of in flight time.. there is no way you take away the millions of dollars of tv , attendance, and marketing revenue that comes from traditional rivalries like Boston vs. Montreal. you spend one saturday night in Montreal when the Habs play the Bruins and then tell me you think the NHL will take that away .. or go to the ACC in toronto or Rogers arena as it is called now on a saturday night when the Leafs are playing montreal or Ottawa and tell me Bettman will take that away... not a chance.!! travel is an issue for some clubs however never will it be a deciding factor.. a couple extra inflight hours per week will not force any league to realign divisions and uproot tradition ... its part of the game man..

@SirKengin Maybe Im speaking from what I know, that being that I am Canadian and noone here needs to be coerced into becoming a hockey fan, but seeing other teams play is somtheing you can do now at any point in time if you really want to without any type of realignment taking place.. its called NHL center ice.... this plan makes absolutley no sense and removes far more than 3 rivalries ...coming from a Hockey fan like you claim you are that is a pretty bias reason for wanting realignment and blind to some adverse affects that would touch more than how we feel as Rangers fans.. (by the way these conference an ddivision names would be laughed at).. taking away the Rangers -Devs-Islanders-Pens -Flyers rivalries would all be rediculous but you also have single handedly removed the Boston -Montreal-toronto rivalries- you have taken away the battle of Ontario Leafs- Sens and the batlles between Buffalo and Toronto-and Montreal Buffalo you take away the florida rivalry in tamp and Florida among others that have started to blossom such as Chicago Nasville and Minnesota colorado... this plan makes no sense .. sorry bud

@CJ EXACTLY this is the kind of simple solution the league will implement.. people looking for complete overhauls are rediculous We need to be realistic and realise that although we might like to see some new opponents for our Rangers that this is a 30 team league with fans in every city who would make similar arguments..

yeah I really think the article was well written al beit about something we all know will happen, up until you went and made those divisions .. first off Boston Rivalry with New York be damned the Nhl will never remove the Boston Montreal rivalry nor the Toronto Montreal Rivalry.. the Rangers will not be taken out of a division with the pens flyers and devs that makes zero sense.. and although geographically speaking Washington fits the bill to take the Isles place there is no way the league randomly puts Tampa Bay in the same division as new your and Boston..the realignment will likely be very similar to what we have seen with perhaps the Redwings moving to the East and the Jets moving to the west..

Well I kinda have to disagree on a few points here kevin.. first off Feds is not a reclamation project he is a 3rd line guy who you can trust on the ice, so too are many players like Boyle, Prust, Rupp, etc these are character guyus who fill roles your core guys dont .. any team looking to win need a few scorers a good d core and a bunch of guys who do the littles things.. saying that because we have 5 guys making most of the cap only makes the point of the argument seem superficual and makes the Rangers look like they are somehow in a bad position which they are not.. the point of the article is to indicate that with the rise in the spending cap teams have larger cores .. and personally a young core like we have as you also have to add our top 4 defenseman our goalie and a couple more guys like rupp and boyle who are signed for 3 more years, the number is more like 40 mil or 41 for 8 or 9 guys.. I am gonna go out on a limb here and say they drop Avery though ... I know he is fan popular but man did Prusty ever take this guys job and with Rupp we are tough enough we dont need Avery .. he really seems to just be a liability.. taking bogus ghost calls and gets no calls his way (see Ovy penalty leading to tying goal in game 1).. plus he makes nearly 2 mil ... just a thought what do you guys think?

yes good article.. only thing I would argue is the 3rd line. I dont see Torts putting feds and Prust on stepans wings if they want to get this guy going offensively personnally I have a strong belief that the top line will be filled out by more of a grinding type as Gabby and Richie will handle the offensive side of things. It always makes sense to put skill with skill but skill also needs to be distributed so I would flip Feds (familiarity with Richards and veteran presence) on the first line and Wolski with Steps and Rupp and keep Avery with Boyle and Prust.

I like the post and I dont want this to be an insult to anyone but good god Id say its about time we Ranger fans stop with the "bad contract" talk. whats done is done is what they say I believe..It really is starting to get tiresome...the rest of the league doing it because they hate the Rangers is one thing let em go.. but when Ranger fans are doing it it really become quite tiresome...

I maintain that Sather has done a hell of a job in the last 2 seasons. We all heard the same record over and over that Redden Drury Gomez and although I include Rozival he actually got market value in large part when he resigned, it is time to look ahead. Sather is well surrouned has great personnel working under him and more importantly a great relationship and a lot of respect throughout the league (a major reason why he is able to swing such quality trades). There are many decisions made in hockey that dont work out and if we dwell on them too much we get nowhere.. I have faith that Sather is on the right track and this team will hoist the cup and shut everyone up for once and for all very soon.

the fact that he was not included in the Vezina nominations and ultimately voted the winner is a complete and utter joke. I don't want to take anything away from Thomas as he is a class act and a great goalie nor can I knock on Rinne as he is a fabulous goalie.. what I will say is that Luongo is a joke. Luongo had the benefit of playing behind an absolutely stacked team and still ended up getting the rope on several occasions during the playoffs. you compare the defensive core and system of those three teams to a Rangers squad that had one guy over the age of 25 (an I'm not taking away from them as they were good) and it is a complete mismatch. The NHL puts so much focus on numbers it clearly shows that the games that are played are forgotten. Thomas had terrific numbers yes but he also played just over 50 games not 72. As Ranger fans we have the privalege of watching an absolutely fantastic goalie night in and night out and it will not be long before he finnally recieves the credit he is long since over due. I watched all the Habs games during the run to the playoffs being from outside of Montreal and I can tell you that althought Halak was great during those two first rounds (completely dead tired and ineffective in the Conference final) the team in front of him did all it took to win and scored timely goals when they needed to (unlike the Rangers). The Caps played confused and the Pens looked tired .. 40 saves a night some of which were fantastic but he also got goal support and good defense as well. I truly believe that Lundy provided all he possibly could have to allo the Rangers to win that series against the Caps lastr year and if it wasn't for the biggest bonehead move by the linesman in overtime of game 4, robbing Dubi and Gabby a 2 on 0 they proobably could have pulled through.. the tying goal in game one was a fluke and in the replay the ref actually had his whistle in his mouth ready to blow it but since it was OVY he was allowed to hack at Lundy til the puck went in.. I know these are excuses and ultimately the Rangers need some goals but Id rather be saying that after a playoff loss then "damn we need a goalie" its alot easier to go from 2-3 goals per game then from 2-4 or 5

@KevinDeLury@Lauren D. well I understand the reason why anyone would be cynical but this is competely different than any of the past 10-15 years.. this year we have more young talent thatn old grizzled vets playing out their days (do we have anymore of those ...no we dont!!) this is a year that people will recognize a franchise on the rise as oppose to a patchwork of ex-stars looking to cash in .. so I dont see the need for the we are screwed (i know it was a joke) thats why I asked what it meant..

He has also done a hell of a job on the trade market as a Rangers GM.. how about Jagr at half the salary for Anson Carter , Gomez for McD and Valentenko +Gabby or how bout landing Prust as an added sweetener to the jokinen deal.. whihc if he had a heart coulda been a beauty deal or the Rozival for Wolski (especially if it works out for Wolski on our top line).. how about managaing to get all the names He wanted to not only consider new york but SIGN.. some guys have stabbed him in the back with lackluster play and some guys just keep showin us that this Sather character deserves his job and all who balme him really probably never laced up a pair of skates in their lives.

@drywpd I agree that the first responsibility is to "shut down" the big guns of the opposing team, however that can also be done by scoring on them.. after all the offensive lines of most teams are oftentimes (some exceptions) the most defensively inept. Staal needs help to do so but the Rangers need to stop standing back and trying to shut down others but instead score on them.. I remember Torts saying that "safe is dead" if it reflected how this team played for the last half last year Staal's point totals would be higher no doubt.

I love the guys but you arent going to get offensive production from your defense when you have Prust and Boyle playing 20+ mins a night and Gabby playing 16mins.. I think that the system works to keep the team in the game and keep the score low because the puck spends so much time behind the net or in the corners but man oh man would I love to see a few more 5 goal games from the Rangers.. I think if that happened Staal would get his due credit.. and #20 to me seems a little far down the list I honestly see this guy in the top 15

Kev I think that the lack of offense has a lot to do with the slouches he has had up front for much of his career ..you cannot expect a defensemen to LEAD the offensive rush and although there are many puck moving defensemen out there who technically lead the rush as they establish the blue line by carrying the puck in, their job is to do so then dish it off to the guys up front. Goals for defensemen often occur on rebounds or hard shots from their point positions and to be honest I have watched every Rangers game I can for many years and havent since Leetch was on the Blueline seen a system in which the shot from the point was properly used. This team spent much of the year behind the net last year, kinda hard for a defenseman to join in on the offense when the puck is 50 feet from his stick. On the defensive side you have to give him his props. he plays a hell of a lot of minutes against some great players and as far as I can rememebr he hasnt allowed them really to be a factor in many games. last year the Rangers were in a lot of games (if I remember correctly they lost what 22 games by one goal ??) and had the pp worked on a regular basis and a few calls gone their way theyd have had a tremendous year and much of that can be attributed to Staal .. so too can the leaps and bounds Girardis game has taken since he became a reglar pairing with Staal as he has a hell of a partner backing him up.. Stall hands down best Defensemen on this team ..

I like your post however Im not sure I agree with the line combos and lack of mention of guys like Hagelin @ Cb1 a rotating left wing seems like an ideal situation on paper cuz the hope may be that you will get the best out of the guy up there every night but the revolving door thing rarely works and never helps build chemistry and familiarity. I think in recent years the flip flopping of the top line and PP unit has really hurt the teams ability to build a consistent attack.

not especially impressed with this entry... the arguments are fragmented and make littel sense.. you criticize Steps point totals (let me remind you he scored 21 goals as a rookie, you say Boyle is expendable ( an attitude that has hurt in the past (see Mannny Malhotra, Dominic Moore et al.) You consider Anisimov to be a rookie (he is not and in fact last year would have been his sophomore year and despite a multitude of massive hits he has taken was his second straight 82 game season and 18 goasl scored) Im not sure what your final point is as you make no real hypothesis .. all around recycled stuff and simply not wortha Stepan Jersey ...sorry pal ..haha

Well I can agree with you that perhaps waiting and signing a guy like Getzlaf in 2 years (even though you need not look further than Burke in Toronto to see that banking on guys of that caliber becoming UFAs in this landscape is rediculous) however I truly believe this team is a couple years at ost from contention for the cup.. they have alot of talent on Defense, a lot of character guys and if Gabby and Richy click and AA DUbi and Cally have 2 years more under their belt adding a couple free agents vetran guys will possibly push em over the top. I have difficulty seeing how waiting while the rest of the league gets better makes any sense if you want to run a franchise that puts fans in the seats. @KevinDeLury

totally agree here. I love Cally and Duby and I certainly loves steps and AA and Im really excited to see what thomas Hagelin and Bourque will possibly bring to the table, that being said these players although very likeable and solid will not be able to match thelikes of the Crosbys and the Toews and Kanes and Stamkoss of the league .. unfortunately we need to spend to get the big names or trade for em and between those two options id rather sign em...and at a nice cap hit like that.

On the flip side I totally see where Kevin is coming from but the simple fact is to continue the rebuild we would absolutely need 2 strait last place finishes in order to ad the stud forwards needed to BUILD a winner and persoannly if we can impove the team now and not waste the prime years of our godsend goalie... I say we do it now.. this team is good and considering what Boston won with last year.. I cant help but see how this could be us next year or the one after if all our parts click

in 6 years he'll be 37 yes but like I said this guy will still be a great player at 37.. and you gotta pay the price if you want to win ..there are many players signed long term that may or may not pan out unfortunately because of this if you wanna grab a star without having access to first overall picks than you gotta spend some coin.....we should all be thankful we like a team that has a management situation that allows for us to have such conversations ..

I totally agree Gomez was a bust and I think the reason why was because this guy has zero work ethic, he had oppurtunitiesto be a great player and sometimes flashed brilliance but he simply has zero work ethic. His wrist shot has got to be the worst Ive ever seen.. I played with guys in minor hockey how had better wrist shots.. As for Dru I really feel as though he didnt deserve the contract but he did show heart and was a very solid player for us.. expectations were too high points wise but he was at least in mind there.. I agree that these two should never have recieved the contracts they got but keep in mind that same offseason saw some major money thrown around for alot of players not just those two..

Richards is a different animal then these two guys though and the moeny is where it would be no matter who you have ..I mean look we have Dubinsky looking for 4 mil and no matter what we all say the guy deserves it based on the salaries around the league. we have a young team and we have alot of options I just cant see how not signing him would have been a netter move... who does what he does for us within our system already .. and if you cant find that in the system who is available via trade that wont lose us young guys and cost less???@KevinDeLury

3 years ago on Video: Richards Talks Being A Ranger | July

Reply

Furthermore, keep in mind the tail end of this contract make Richards an easy buyout Candidate. That being said, Richards is a hell of a player, with a rare combination of skill, finess and hockey smarts who is in peak physical condition. I will not be surprised if he plays out his contract and by year 9 we will all be wishing he resigns for another year a la Selanne.. ANyone who feels a guy cannot be effective at 40 years old anymore need to take notice of my boy Teemu's stats last year and he is over 40 my friends.. but tyou can also take note of guys like Recchi as well who could still play next season if he really wanted to..

3 years ago on Video: Richards Talks Being A Ranger | July

I honestly think it's annoying to constantly read how somone is against the signing of Richards..first its let's develop our young guys and not sign big names.. hate to break it to this idea but we have noone in development who comes near Richards skill level, experience and overall leadership an heart. Second it's lets keep pur young guys, this logic is sound but how else can you get a Center iceman of this quality unless you give a sizeable return (meaning we lose our young talent). And third there is thos who feel we should cut corners and let the big money be spent on big names by otehr teams this makes zero sense. A brad Richards at 6,7 mil is not found in many places in the league and I tell you once and a million times I'd rather have Richards on my side feeding Gabby than watching him make another team better ...Lay off the contract.. its a great signing and all you naysayers are really annoying to listen to .. have faith and shut up..
