@orby @mcnowski you can't just cut matt cooke. especially not now. i know that he's not helping out so much when he's sitting in the press box, but he brings too much to the table outside of his dirty hits. plus, we're still paying him 1 mil plus per year, and i doubt they will waive him and pick up half of his salary when edmonton grabs him. maybe trade him in the offseason if you can't talk any sense into him, but you can't just cut a guy like that.

man, i love cookie as much as next guy, but seriously, wtf!!??!! you cannot defend cooke by saying kunitz scored on the pk. during a 5 minute major, rangers are allowed to score unlimited goals (not that they would, just saying). dude needs to stop playing with his head up his ass, especially now with the penguins supposed "leading they anti-headshot movement". there was no reason to do that, it certainly wasn't helping out the team in any way, it was VERY easily avoidable, and it could have ended a lot worse than it did. given all that's happened over the last few months with headshots and half of our team being out with concussions, i would think that there would be a little bit more of an outcry over this.

if the league doesn't suspend cooke (they def are), shero or lemieux have to in order to save any kind of face that they might have left now. thanks cookie for playing like a retard again.

@Kidspud @badvibesdude i wouldn't exactly call getting routine physicals, having your contract traded to another team, and generally partaking in the game of football "subhuman treatment". they did choose to join the league and all that goes along with it when they declared for the nfl draft.

yes, owners make a lot of money. the owners of every business in america make an unproportionately large amount of money when compared to their employees. that's an unfortunate aspect of capitalism. but that is the way that it is. i make way less money than the owner of my business, and you don't hear me comparing my job to slave labor. of course, i would love to make more money. anybody would. but the owners are owners for a reason. they, or their parents or grandparents, took huge financial risks to get an nfl franchise up and running, and they are being rewarded for their risk. once again, capitalism.

if anybody has a problem with this situation or thinks that they have it so terrible and are being treated like a slave, do what marx said and rise up and take control of the means of production. or don't, because you're a joke if you think that your $1 mil per year contract is that terrible. go watch the news and look at places like haiti or libya, where shit is really bad, and you'll be thankful for your "slave labor" job that allows you more luxuries than people of those countries could ever dream of.

Bruce Boudreau gives the old middle finger to Montreal fans who are pissed that Chara didn't get suspended, and goes on to say something along the lines of "if you don't like to see players get hit in the head, don't come to the games".

What a fucking joke.

He of all people, who calls for Matt Cooke's head when his skate gets tripped up with Ovi's, yet fully supported Ovechkin's reckless playing style last year (which resulted in Brian Campbell being injured for and extended period of time), says that Montreal fans shouldn't be pissed off because Chara probably ended Pacioretty's career, got a MAJOR penalty and a game misconduct for interference, and then was not handed any more supplementary discipline. Dude needs to seriously check himself if he did not see anything wrong with that hit.

cooke needs to get his shit together. with the way our team is injured currently, he can't be taking getting game misconducts night in and night out, especially since he is, as bob errey so eloquently pointed out, our tied for the team lead in goals among active penguins. we need him to create offense, not controversy right now.

@DrS sorry dude, not buying it. you can laugh all you wan to if shero trades despres, but i sincerely doubt he will do that. he would need to get a seriously good player to give up somebody with as much upside as despres. i would see gogo go now and wait for despres for next year. i doubt either will go to be honest with you. i think it really depends on when and if crosby comes back. if it looks like he'll be out until after the playoffs, shero won't do anything.

@SaintMarty @pdoggy @KingOfNoPants I'll take the $5 mil per year. He may not be entirely worth it just yet, but as the salary cap expands and as Martin becomes more comfortable in our system, it will begin to look like a better and better deal every year.

Also, when you consider the absolute BARGAIN we are paying for Kris Letang ($3.5 mil, are you freaking kidding me!!?) I don't mind seeing a slight overpayment for a well above-average defenseman.

@sfdg
are you really as stupid as you are pretending to be? you would trade crosby, not even arguably, but verifiably the BEST player in the league for a streaky diet-Malkin Kopitar, Wayne Simmonds, and a 3RD round pick. after the year he is having? after he was on pace for the best statistical season anyone has had in the like the last 10 years? you would trade him just because his value will "never be higher". that is by far the stupidest thing i've ever read on tPb, and I can only hope it's the dumbest thing that you have ever said. so, by your own logic, we should probably also trade Letang, Fleury, Staal and Malkin because their trade value will never be higher. I'm sure we could totally swing "great" deals for all of them, while simultaneously ruining any sense of team chemistry that has been building since SId came into the league.

Seriously. a third fucking round pick. i'm having a terribly hard time getting over how dumb that sounds.

3 years, 5 months ago on Tuesdays With Stoosh: 1.25

Reply

@MightyDumplings true, a bad malkin year is better than 95% of the player in the league will ever do. and your point about backstrom is well taken, however his best season (last year) was played largely without ovi on his wing. i think he centered semen, which is still and upgrade from most of malkin's wings. but he is a good player, and i wouldn't discount that just because he plays for the caps.

i was just on cap geek not to long ago, and yes many of the top 50 paid players in the league do not deserve to be (ryan malone is the 49th highest paid player in the league with a 6 mil per year average, yikes), but there are still many players out there who i feel are more consistent and worth their money a little bit more than malkin - see jonathan toews and patrick kane at 6.5 mil per.

i think my biggest concern is that the pens may be in salary cap hell pretty. the whole system of "wait for the trade deadline to lock up good winger" is a bad one, and becoming increasingly more difficult because all of our good young players are no longer on entry-level contracts. during the 07-08 cup run, we were able to have great wingers and great centers because staal, malkin, letang, and fleury were all still on entry level contracts. since then, we have tied up about 20 mil per year on those four guys, and we have seen all of our good wings walk in free agency, retire, or just inexplicably start to suck all of a sudden. i just don't think that strength down the middle is going to be enough come playoff time. montreal sure figured out how to beat us - take away the center of the ice and let our shitty wings try to beat you.

geno is a big part of the offense and he is getting paid to produce like he was 2 years ago. if he can't consistently do that, then the entire offense suffers because we have a lack of goal scorers on this team. if he can pick his game up, then all this will be moot. i hope he does, but if he doesn't...

@MightyDumplings agreed about being more interested in what geno does during the playoffs. that is truly where it counts. but the regular season is pretty much and an extended training camp for the playoffs, and geno, for all the money he makes, is underperforming. he set his own bar pretty high, and got paid according to the stats he was putting up several years ago.

you know what 6.7 mil per year gets you? nicklas backstrom. i wouldnt want to trade geno for him, but backstrom puts up similar numbers for 2 mil per year less. just saying, there may be better deals out there, and GMRS is the generally really good at making them.

has anybody noticed that sam kasan from the pen's official site has been seriously ripping off tPb lately? seriously, read his "pens report" articles. it started off with the videos to begin the blog, which is common enough that i didn't really think about it, but now he is posting pictures that say shit like "pics that love saucer passes". sounds a bit like a ripoff of link city to me.

@docciavelli definitely dude. if nothing else, you have to respect the skill of the red wings. they may be whiney bitches, but the pens went through some serious battles with those dudes, and supplied us with some of the most exciting hockey any of us have ever seen. that being said, fuck em and i'm glad we won.

@Dozinasaurus 2.0 @ metaphorical nuts @MightyDumplings whatever the case is with geno, fact of the matter is that he is playing well below his paycheck right now. he is actually the highest paid penguin right now. he is making something like 10 mil right now, but he has a smaller amount on the end of his contract to keep his hit down to 8.7 mil (as per Mark Madden, so take that for what you will). we all know that he is a really good player. he was the best 2 years ago. but people have to realize that sports, especially those with a salary cap, are a "what have you done for me lately?" business. i'm not advocating trading the dude just yet, but if finishes this season at under a point-per-game clip and doesn't produce well in the playoffs, then yeah, it's time to dump the dude. i'm not saying that we will be able to replace his production with the same amount of money, but i would hope that GMRS wouldn't let another one-sided jagr trade happen with geno.

I'm pretty sure the the ASG is the LAST thing on Sid's mind right now. Judging by everything that I have ever read about him, I can only imagine that he is burning up inside not being able to play for the Pens, and more importantly seeing them stumble for a few games immediately after he was injured. Give the dude a break.

Besides, Sid misses like every single All-Star game anyway. Seriously, has he played in more than 1? I feel like he's always injured around this time of the year.

I always go to the Souper Bowl (right across the street from the CEC) to pregame/eat before the games. The service is kinda slow (mostly because there are a ton of Pens fans doing the same thing), and the food is pretty much your standard bar fare, but for the money it's good stuff.

Also, for somebody who is coming in from out of town who has never been to the city before, I would probably stay as close to the CEC as you can. Pittsburgh can be a confusing place to navigate, especially with the added traffic caused by the Pens game. Just giving you a heads up.

@ChristopherOhhh best response so far. that's what separates good hockey players from great hockey players: their ability to adapt. and IF Bylsma's system is Geno's problem, then it is on him to be a team player and a great hockey player and adapt. if he is unable to do so, then I'm sorry, but he is being overpaid for simply being a good, not great, player.

@DiscountWingers Agreed. Like I said, short term wingers are NOT the answer. I just fear that getting a decent, long term winger may end up costing us somebody that we don't want to see go. So goes the salary cap, I guess though.

@DiscountWingers Yeah, for the most part I think our wingers are fine. The only real problem that I see is a lack of finishing wingers. We could have the two of the best 3rd lines and two of the best 4th lines in hockey given the roster that we have, yet we have a problem putting together on decent 1st line. I definitely don't know what's best, and King Shero tends to pick up wingers that I wasn't even thinking about (with the exception of Poni - that one seemed really obvious). Hopefully he pulls something amazing off again this year without too much collateral damage.

@Redz37 @keebler that is a crappy second line, and crosby/malkin together on a line just does not work under HCDB. too much fancy passing and deferring, not enough puck cycling and getting the puck to the net. keep the 2nd line as Cooke-Staal-Malkin, or bring up Big Dog and insert him somewhere in the top 6.

@JBATC @e_man41 @Comrade Blackout I think it is something to the effect that a player with a one-way contract gets paid the same amount whether he is in the nhl or the ahl, and a player on a two-way contract gets paid separate amounts based on what league he is playing on. as far as who has to clear waivers, I still have no clue how the fuck that works. I want to say it has something to do with age, but even as I say that is sounds stupid to me.

I don't know about yinz guys, but I'm kinda tired about constantly worrying about which winger we may or may not get that will end up being the midseason messiah for the pens. Its not really a winning system, and it relies far too much on gambling that the player will find chemistry with the team. Sometimes Shero hits a homerun (Guerin), other times he strikes out miserably (Poni). This team needs a long term solution at wing, as the way I see it, we only have about four top 2 line players (Kunitz, Malkin, Crosby, and Staal), 3 of which are centers who can't really play wing - sorry, but Geno and Staal suck balls at wing. As much as nobody wants to admit it, Staal or Geno are eventually going to have to go to free up some cap space for decent wingers. Our system of trading at the deadline for wingers worked when guys like Letang and Staal were still on entry-level contracts, but they aren't anymore. There is just no way to get decent wingers by free agency or via trade without getting rid of a key piece or two. Sucks to say, but it is what it is.

@DiscountWingers Leino and Knuble definitely are not options. One plays for a division rival who is a playoff contender, and one is an important piece of a playoff-caliber conference rival. Cole and Williams would be nice, but both are kinda injury prone and over-the-hill. Dvorak would be Ponikarovsky part II. I agree with you about Moulson though. He could be nice and could probably be had at a good price (possibly at a Guerin-esque conditional draft pick), but I can't help but shake the feeling that he might just be the second coming of Jonathan Cheechoo. Starts off hot, and just kinda fades away into obscurity for the rest of his career.

yeah really, what the fuck? who cares if the fans chant stamkos' name after he falls down? dude made an ass of himself, and honestly, almost every crowd chants "crosby sucks" when the pens are in town. fuck 'em.

hate to say it though, but i'm not too sure where i stand on the whole "no handshake" thing. at first i didn't give a shit because its only a regular season game, and well, the two teams hate each other. but that was kind of a lame move on the pens part by not following the tradition. i could personally not care any less, but i can see why an outsider looking in would think less of the penguins because of something like that.
