@danblackburn That would be a pity, but it wouldn't be the end of the Ranger's world. With Talbot developing into a premier back up, Rangers can sign another starting goaltender.Talbot being a solid good and capable pro netminder changes everything actually.

McIIrath is too valuable a player to be fighting these type of guys. Bickel or another Hartford fighter should be doing that. That was ridiculous, hope it doesn't happen again. He must fight when its with the Rangers or necessary for his role protecting goalie and teammates but bouts like these, against these type of players are useless and risky.
1 year, 5 months ago on McIlrath Takes It On the Chin Twice vs. Baby Islanders
Yakupov doesn't like to forecheck, so he would be a rehabilitation project for AV. A strong forecheck is part of the Rangers' system now. He also is a puck hog, and shoots instead of passing-which might not be so terrible for the Rangers-but still has to be addressed. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/Yakupov+frustrated+with+benching/9033031/story.html
Rather have Nail than Hemsky though, if the price wasn't too steep. Rangers would bring him into line, as they have ability to help player development process.Eg: Anisimov-made into a good two way player.-though that was a lot of Hartford-Rangers honed his 2 way skills.

Tough call about Krieder. He basically hasn't shown much- some shining moments amidst a swamp of mediocrity and confusion. He has been playing well lately apparently, maybe he has turned the corner. So a trade for a regular reliable goal scorer who is responsible defensively would help this team now, but could maybe be a long term loss. Rangers should at least wait until a huge difference maker -Carl Hagelin- is back for a few games before they rush to judgement- its still very early in the season. Hags is one of the few who can turn a team completely around.

Hope Nash plays Wednesday. If hes out for awhile Hags return will help alot.dont think kreider or miller will help unless theyve solved their issues.Once the defence is able to master AVs system we should be ok.Id still like to trade girardi or mdz as soon as we can for some skill.maybe later in the season

Kinda shocked but honestly, I couldn't see CT making the Rangers for awhile if ever, he was small and until he got the mid twenties strength I couldn't see him impacting the team. This Kristo dude played loads on the Fighting Sioux, which is always a great team so he is seasoned and developed well.I could see him next year or later this year, making the Rangers in a 3rd or fourth line role moving up to the second line possibly. He has played with Stepan in WJC. However,on the negative side there are comments about his off ice behavior.A couple of incidents, at least one of which involved alcohol.-nothing off the wall though.
1 year, 9 months ago on Rangers Trade Christian Thomas To Canadiens For Danny Kristo
Clowe's going to be gone for even a late pick, Rangers have no use for him now with his recent history.A few teams might want to chance it, but not the Rangers.Looks like the next season will be the same basic core, hopefully all RFAs they want are resigned and we go from there.Which is not as good as getting rid of Richards and bringing in good talent, but that's the way it is.It is certainly not going to be a horrible season if Richards doesn't get injured.Rangers have a real good core with prospects having space to move up .AV will succeed and it'll be ok.

Important win against a good team..Rangers came out just about even with TO these two games, that shows Rangers have a good team. How Lundqvist plays determines the Rangers. When he's off they lose, when he's on they win.On to next game.
Every game is a must win now.Hope they can hang in until Staal is back and playing well. That will boost the team talent for the playoffs.with Staal back at peak performance,my only concern about this team not going deep again is Tort's coaching.Gotta adapt to things in the game.
2 years ago on Video: Rangers, Players React to Huge Win vs. Leafs
Tension in the room probably came from not winning and not getting the goals.Problem was as everyone says they basically blew up the team from last year for various reasons, money, to get Nash.etc.They had the right bunch of players and needed a bit more. So they made too much change and it didn't work-no surprise in hindsight. Bad management by both Sather and Torts.
Now they have added the depth back -but do they have enough to match last year's team? We have 9 games to find out.If Staal returns and newcomer Moore gets more TOI I think we might be ok.If Dorsett is better at everything than Boyle that would help also.
2 years ago on Was Gaborik a Locker Room Cancer?
Girardi is crummy.Wasting shots and assignments.MDZ backslides once in awhile.Hurry back Marc! Staal should wear a cage if we make the playoffs, never mind a full face visor. With Staal this team might just have enough to get through some rounds. If Dorsett can improve our club then maybe we have enough to do better.Have to have Staal tho or we're done.

Rangers need Marc Staal, especially the way he was playing before he got the injury. He is a game breaker, a dominating player this year.Far and away the best Dman.Hopefully with the visor he will be fine and able to play as normal soon.

McIlrath continues to improve, as he should, and Rangers will have a real regular roster player, a skilled big dman who fights and skates.
2 years ago on Fast Has Lower Body Injury; McIlrath Fights
Have to remember Fast has been touted for years and has been playing well in the SEL-he's a good player. What is interesting is that everybody is freaking out over Oscar Lindberg's play which has been beast like in the SEL.When he gets over here we could really have something. Both guys could be capable of playing in the NHL and in the playoffs, no less.We have to keep an eye on them.

He's faster, thats going to help him.Looks like the KHL really helped his game. He's an NHL level player, not a problem at all.Good luck to him, if he gets the chance he'll make a bunch of good plays. With Clowe and eventually Dorset added everyone should be playing bigger, including the Hobbit.

Staal is the Rangers best defenceman. His play before the incident proves this.He is in his prime and let him heal-he had orbital fractures and let them heal up.I have read nothing about concussion symptoms so that is just stinkin thinkin by some fans about his situation. A blow to the face isn't going to be threatening as far as concussion, those orbital bones are there for exactly this reason-protection of the eye and head from blows-let them heal.Maybe we'll see him back in the playoffs.Healthy recovery Marc!
2 years ago on No Timetable for Staal as He Increases Off- Ice Workouts
Marian Gaborik is one of hockey's greats. I have no doubt he'll continue to be a top NHL goal scorer for many more years.Good luck on the Blue Jackets Gabby!
If the Rangers can win the games left then this trade deserves the crazy praise.
Have to see how it plays out for the rest of the season and playoffs.Clowe looked really good, Moore has good potential and goodbye Hamrlyk. Brassard has skill.
Overall got some better balance on the 4 lines and D.but still plenty room for improvement-Pyatt played his same game-lets just play the boards till we're exhausted and nothing else.Powe gets his chance with plenty of time and misses open net.
Bottom line -reality check-the Rangers have to be consistently as good or better as this game. However, that's 2 more points and back into playoff picture.

Zucca makes up for the playmaking that Richards doesn't have -so we have a top 6 player added.Richards is not completely numb so he now makes up for the loss of
Dubi or AA.
We might have enough now to win our way into the playoffs and do some damage.Keep the stick Zuke-don't change anything -you played the exactly the way the Ranger's need.

Why expect different results when essentially the Rangers are going to be doing the same thing again?
They will have the same results unless a major shakeup such as a coaching change takes place. They will win a game nicely then not show up for games or be unable to finish their few good chances.Fire Torts now.and start a new direction with our core players. Then if they still don't show up-Trade or buyout as appropriate.Richards first.
Gabby is clearly a tougher decision.Have to carefully scrutinize any deal for him.First round pick has to be in ANY deal plus absolute top level prospect as well as a goal scorer roster player.Remember Gabby, despite his current problems, will continue to be an elite NHLplayer for years-possibly many years.
Get rid of Torts first-he is the problem.but it is also Sather's fault for blowing up last years bottom 6 by not signing Prust, Mitchell Fedotenko again-.If it aint broke dont fix it.
2 years ago on Critical Stretch of the Season This Week
The team is telegraphing their shots, MZA played terrifically tonight, but wait a few games and he'll be Tortified and doing the same hesitant useless stuff as the rest of the team.Torts is not offensively coaching them, just letting them roll around in their own crap and hoping they'll "find themselves"and clean themselves up.They are not finishing or reacting accurately-ie:Stepan looked surprised when he got a crisp fast pass from Zucc for a one timer on the powerplay. But not only that Callahan looked surprised in front of the net when he got a good pass from Miller and flubbed the chance ..They should know what the other teammate is going to do.other teams do and are outscoring us clearly.Time for a coaching change and keeping some lines together for awhile .Torts and Sullivan are done here.bring in a coach team from anywhere-AHL, KHL,
2 years ago on Rangers 0, Canadiens 3
Girardi is crappy - telegraphed shots and misplays. on the powerplay. zuccarello helping a lot. he is the best and quickest passer and shooter on the powerplay. Other players have to shoot quicker -not telegraph. If the Rangers want to win, shoot quicker and get on the puck. They are not playing bad- this is a case of them stepping up and taking the game-no bs.
2 years ago on Rangers @ Canadiens (Game 34)
On one note: these lines have some goal scorers on each line. It would be interesting if it actually worked and Torts could safely roll 4 lines that put the puck in the net. This could rock like a five lead guitar blitz ...or not.
Think they have to have constant pressure and puck possession to make this work.So start thinking forechecking Rangers and you can't let up.
2 years ago on Zucc on Richards Line; Gabby to 4th Line; Biron to Start in Montreal
Gaborik playing on the 4th line.maybe CT could take a top six spot if called up.Torts is trying everything.Gabby probably wondering if he is going to be playing goalie next.Certainly confusing.
CT has a top NHL shot and can be weaned into the big team.If Rangers can set up his shot then his addition would be helpful for some goals. Whether he can take it past that is up to him.
2 years ago on Thomas Scores 3rd Goal in Two Games
If you look at AA and Dubi, they had hustle, they had effort-they play the same way in Columbus.Go Go Go. Prust- that same hutzpa goes without saying-incredible effort every shift.he has helped Montreal with it. Their talent level was also good- NHL level players all.Skill.They all scored goals. They all played the boards.
So thats a big loss- but its replaceable with a number of things- 1.some skill with new players.2.Some effort- thats what the coach has failed to bring out of the team.Skill can be added with Zucc addition-maybe Fasth also (after a few warm up games in AHL.)Effort- that has to come from the players, instilled by their coach..Play desperation hockey for 60 minutes every game-the rookies also have to learn to do this.I would double shift Nash and Stepan they are at the top of their games now.

2 years, 1 month ago on Return Of The Hobbit: Mats Zuccarello Has Reportedly Signed With The Rangers
40 goal scorers don't grow on trees.Good scoring quality NHL players like Dubi and AA pretty much do.If we need grit and depth to replace them there is no way Rangers should trade Gaborik unless they get a comparable scorer. Trade him and we could make the playoffs and be out of it easily, even with a good trade.Gabs will get untracked even if he is having an off year. Not likely he won't if he plays like yesterday I want the Rangers to win the SC-as difficult as that is to believe in.Keeping Gaborik and having him get back to his usual level of greatness is the best way to get a chance at the Cup.Rangers and Torts are stupid if they bet against him and be building for "next year" or the year after.Generally you don't win the Stanley cup with only one superstar scorer- you have to have a couple of them or even more.Get the middle depth from somewhere else.We aren't going to megatrade our way out of this mediocrity and certain players are just going to have to get their act together,If there are players that work out later and can be brought in we have a chance. Krieder is here now, he's an example.Hope he can work out on the third line and follow the game plan.
2 years, 1 month ago on Rangers Talking to Kings About Gaborik?
Good play and game plan by the Rangers.
Watched Gabby closely last night.Trading him is a stupid idea.He played pretty well.He is having problems scoring this year, but he has that alternate year thing. I was always hoping he's get the puck so we'd maintain possession in their zone for a few extra seconds and a pass would be completed properly.Actually we can't trade him for any less than a comparable goal scorer.Even tho they are rumored to be looking for "grit" ( LOL.)Anyways, if Rangers keep to their game plan, they are likely to win more games. Everyone is pretty much doing ok. Some more than others.
2 years, 1 month ago on Rangers 3, Devils 2
Basically they can win with tonight's 2nd and 3rd period gamestyle if they step it up more.1.Good goaltending. 2.Keep the opponent to the outside at all times in Ranger's zone and gain possesion. 3.Get up quickly through the neutral zone and maintain possession, get shots to the net and take it to the net. 4. Defence pinch in. 5.more shots on net. They didn't score enough with this style in this game, but if they keep doing this they will start scoring a few more and win a few more.Do they have enough skill to play this way against better teams? I think they can. They just gotta stay focused and not mess up
2 years, 1 month ago on Rangers 2, Hurricanes 1, SO
Rangers gotta focus on the transition through the neutral zone-get that done and keep possession.
2 years, 1 month ago on Rangers vs. Hurricanes (Game 28)
Carolina is stacking the neutral zone so once the Rangers get through the neutral zone they have a moment of opportunity, gotta take the quick shot or if two players get through- the quick pass and shot.
Assuming that the top six scores some goals. These guys are going to have to score a goal. There has to be some goal production from one or two of them.Other wise bring up Krieder or even Noobs or CT but there has to be goals from someone in the 3rd or 4th lines.Necessary.
2 years, 1 month ago on Gabby-Richards-Nash Reunited; Asham Skates Again
Rangers are slumping and we can only hope they get their top two lines scoring in some kind of good regular pattern, and that MDZ can continue his recent good d.as well as McD, Girardi and Stralls pick up their levels to make up for Marc's loss.If they can step it up and stay in playoff contention is about all we can ask for right now.
Then in a while, if Krieder and anyone else on the Whale has been playing REALLY well and if Fasth or Oscar L become available: add them. With Staal back, things could be different. We would be stronger-win more games-but thats a lot of ifs-when we don't know what the basic reason for team problems are.Look- all naysayers aside-They actually have a very good top six -not underrated at all-and respectable D-they should be playing better, as we all know.Anyways right now they have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps-that's about it.Maybe its only a case of sometimes the pucks don't go in.Rangers can't get down or go defeatist at this point. Girardi said shoot more-but the real answer is shoot quicker, pass faster and sharper and don't give up on any play.By the way Danny G-Telegraphing that same point shot again and again is kinda weak and ineffective unless you have a shot like Rick Nash's or Christian Thomas's.
We can turn this around even if we don't know what the reason is for the floundering.Just do it. LGR.

I wish Marc a speedy recovery, and he is a difference maker on this team.Rangers have to find a way out of their funk and somehow stay in the playoff race until Staal returns. Then things will start going our way and we'll win more. He's that important.

@kicker75 @AG_Blue Your point about McIlrath not getting the minutes under Torts is a very good one and is a good long term argument not to bring him up, but my concern right now is selfish and short term -ie the Rangers need a crease clearing Dman cause there is no one on the team that does that-(man is Sauer ever missed. What a setback for the Ranger team.)
I'm just arguing for the 4 -5 game cup of coffee to see him and evaluate directly for everyone-If Segal Ferriero Mashinter and CT can get call ups why not Dylan-what the heck? This instead of getting salary or trading picks/ players for a dman who can housekeep properly.
2 years, 1 month ago on Jets 3, Rangers 1
@kicker75 @AG_Blue I'm surprised at the scouting reports because I watched a video of Dylan addressing this issue and he said himself that his skating has never been an issue at all.Someone else who watches CT games mentioned his first step and lateral movement needing more but then they just added a few days ago that it has improved a lot this year and is really not an issue anymore.I admit I don't watch a lot of CT whale video and am just going by what I have seen in Last year's Rangers preseasons as well as what some regular viewers of complete CT whale games have vehemently reported this year-basically that his skating and footspeed is a non issue.Myself I have seen him go nearly coast to coast and move up quickly to pinch in-he has good speed. Most importantly what I saw and it was last year-was really good basics on D. ie: Clearing the puck sharply and smartly when it had been fumbled by everyone in the zone.Clearing the crease effectively-even Lundy had to look twice a couple of times in surprise.
If McIIrath can do that without any penalties for the Rangers, Stu Bickel is not even in the same ballpark.I don't see BIckel as even having NHL solid basic D-skills. That said, I have to side with you in that McIllrath needs more development, but at this stage for the Rangers I don't see it hurting him to do that development with the big team if he can contribute right now.The only question is can he do it? I say why not find out and bring him up for a cup of coffee and see.
@slapshot13j Stepan is the key to the first line, he is playing great and both Nash and Hags will improve with him as center.
2 years, 1 month ago on Nine Regulation Goals in Last Five Games
I would focus on 3 scoring lines with and Hags/ Step/ Nash as the Rangers top line.Gabby and Richards on the second line.Callahan and Miller on the 3rd line. The other forwards would be interchangeable for boardwork, grit, forechecking as needed per line or to enhance scoring on each line.
@kicker75 @AG_Blue This is where many people have been given false information,There is nothing wrong with Dylan McIIrath's skating or speed at all, in fact he is an excellent skater, -it's one of the attributes that caused him to be a first round selection. He is plenty fast enough for the NHL.As for decision making, he is a smart kid,but lots to learn of course. But as far as basics, he has those. Primarily though, his speed is the opposite of this myth that has been promulgated. He is a fast skater,no problem at all with quickness. He is a first rounder, and his excellent skating ability is one of the reasons for it.
@AG_Blue Could be but I dunno, he is green but has the basics .He isn't a slouch at D or dumb or anything .He probably wouldn't be a disaster and if he did manage well-we would be a stronger team.If not, send him back down.
Is the problem Torts? We have some good players, and we have a lot of grinders.I think Lundy was right when he said we have to get more people in front of their net and less in front of ours. Its MciIlrath time, bring him up and tell im to watch the penalties carefully-aka Haley- he can't be worse than our D has played at times.Maybe he can keep our crease clear.Ranger's D is hot and cold seriously. .I mean why not-if Torts can have Brian Boyle and Michael Haley out in the last 4 minutes when we need goals hoping for some miracle goal from them-why not give a crease clearing shut down rookie a cup of coffee?
For offence we have Christian Thomas, Zuccarello, Hrivik, Fast, Lindberg all in the pipeline. We'll have to add some of them and move roster players to 3rd ie Callahan when we can b/c our bottom 6 needs some scoring ability badly, and goal scorers don't grow on trees.CT played with effort in his one game, he deserves some ice with that dynamite shot of his. Krieder needs to be in AHL, maybe Miller too if he can't stop the turnovers. If they improve bring them up later.
We have some good players so I hope they don't blow up this team.I have to wonder as I said, is the problem the coaching? Because something seems to be missing from this team, and its definitely not the skill of the players. There is more to this than not finishing.Board work is good but the object is to get the puck and and get it on net.
The top players are holding their sticks too tight-especially Gabby-maybe thats on Torts.Hey Gabby, just shoot from the slot , don't bother dangling.
Stepan is playing fantastic right now.You know, this could be conditoning, he is finally in good game condition, mentally and physically.Your accolades deserved because he is a great NHL player. He belongs as the 1st line center right now, until RIcards gets to the same condition level.Hags, Stepan and Nash, with some time together and if Hags and Step shoot more, would be one of the top lines in the league.
