I talked to a couple experienced racers about dropping the pressure on my clinchers. One pointed out that clincher tires aren't designed to run at low pressures so that even if you don't pinch flat your tire isn't performing very well. These guys said get a relatively inexpensive set of tubular wheels (see the Williams review) and tubular tires. They told me I'd be amazed and, I was. Maybe you can find a CX friend that will let you try their wheels. One lap and you'll be a convert.

Thanks for a well written piece. My first year too. Bullet #1 was a wake-up call. I can ride all day but 45 minutes of CX can trash my legs. My biggest learning has been that, yes, the tire setup is really important. I now have tubulars and the difference is beyond simple description. Can't wait for next year.
